Low Cost Design Development for Rural OVC Shelter & Sanitation
Contracting Agency: Habitat for Humanity Mozambique (HFHMz)
Contractor: TO BE AWARDED to contractor qualified in low cost rural architecture and project management over construction proc-esses of low cost shelter and sanitation
Scope of Work: Using information of HFHMz’s Orphan & Vulnerable Children (OVC) Shelter Program, indigenous housing models, local material & labor markets with OVC Program data, the contractor will develop new housing & sanitation designs that meet HFHMz quality and cost standards. New designs will enable increased production outputs, especially during high rain periods in Chimoio and Morrumbala project districts. Design prototypes will be piloted in specified communities to enable learning process for project scale up.

Angie Gullan, Dolphin EnCOuntours ‐ Dr. Simon Pierce, Eyes on the Horizon Every year, the 3rd Saturday of September is International Coastal Cleanup day, when volunteers around the planet dedicate time and energy to cleaning their local beaches. Sadly, this event is becoming an increasingly important event on the calendar for marine conservationists. Worldwide, the ocean is filling up with rubbish. In some parts of the Pacific Ocean there is six times as much plastic as there is plankton! That makes coastal cleanups a great way of not only keeping our beautiful beaches clean, but also as an opportunity to educate people about the importance of minimising wastes. This year was no different..... The Ponta do Ouro Beach Clean‐up started off with a Friday evening presentation to volunteers that covered the history of the event, why it is important to participate as well as what to collect and how to record the collections. Saturday morning bright and early saw some 60 volunteers converged on the beaches. Three task teams were set up, two working the lower bays from the SA / Moz border to the middle of Ponta bay, the third ventured up north by can. Our cleanup area included numerous locales within a 30km range ‐ 4 km directly within the primary tourist area in Ponta do Ouro; northern end of Ponta Malangone to mid‐Ponta Madejanine +/‐ 2 km; southern to northern end of Ponta Techonbanine +/‐6 km. There was a total of 95 bags of rubbish (weighing in at approx. 677.5 kg), 1 wooden pallette, 2x 55 gallon oil drums, and 81.5 m of metal/aluminium rods (the ones used for the beach gazebos). We had about 60 people helping out, kids, adults, tourists, operators, local Mozambicans as well as Maputo Special Reserve rangers. We had 3 vehicles and 4 trailers to bring back our 'goods'. Shoreline/recreational ‐ 4397 items Ocean/waterways ‐ 1316 items Smoking related ‐ 540 items Dumping ‐ 64 items Medical/hygiene ‐ 72 items Unusual items collected included an intact hard hat and a water pump. The fact that so much rubbish was collected within these protected areas (which are important habitats for marine mammals and nesting sea turtles) shows that continued vigilance is necessary to keep these beaches free of harmful and unsightly debris. Thanks to all the partici‐pants, and we hope to see an even greater turn‐out next year! Africa’s pioneer dolphin interaction & research centre is situated on the southern‐most shores of Mozambique. Under the guidance of marine mammal experts, Dolphin EnCOun‐tours established Africa’s first dolphin swim program during the early ‘90s in Ponta do Ouro. This has resulted in ‘awareness & research’ based dolphin tourism that delicately balances humanity’s fascination with dolphins while fulfilling the needs of educating, con‐serving and research.
