OCLC Research Terminology Services Project

Goals:

Provide access to controlled vocabularies and other knowledge organization schemes through Web services

Develop prototype services that can be accessed by library and Semantic Web applications


Initial focus on genre vocabularies

Available:

DCMI Type Vocabulary

Genre Terms from Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama, etc. (GSAFD)

Newspaper Genre Terms (NGL)

Under development:

Radio Form/Genre Terms (RADFG) U.S. Library of Congress

Moving Image Form/Genre Terms (MIGFG) U.S. Library of Congress

Processing workflow

1. Convert files to standard format:

MARC 21 authorities or classification formats

Enhance records with administrative data

As feasible, enrich with mappings to other vocabularies

Convert file into XML format (MARC XML)

2. Load into services environment:

Supports various web services

Provides a convenient means for users of Internet Explorer and MS Office 2003 applications to have access to loosely-coupled services from 3rd parties…

Examples:

Access to 3rd party reference databases (e.g., articles)

Access to special files like thesauri

OCLC services pilot test

OCLC production group evaluating for possible terminology services & products

Initial testing using Microsoft Research Pane together with OCLC Connexion® interface

Offers access to multiple controlled vocabularies to support consistent metadata for library, archives, museum collections

Pilot institutions include U.S. & non-U.S. public, special and university libraries, and non-library organizations


DeweyBrowser

The DeweyBrowser is a research prototype that supports searching and browsing collections of resources organized by Dewey

The prototype was developed to make the most of DDC numbers assigned to library materials and to explore the use of AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML)


DeweyBrowser & AJAX

AJAX is an approach to programming web interfaces that allows user interaction with a web page without refreshing the whole screen

Using AJAX speeds up the interface by only requesting parts of a page

Refreshing only the part of the screen that changes tends to encourage exploration, behavior that is central to how the DeweyBrowser was designed to be used

The DeweyBrowser is an example of an entire application built using AJAX


DeweyBrowser

The interface presents search results at three levels corresponding to the three main summaries of Dewey

To use the prototype, a user navigates up and down the Dewey hierarchy by clicking on a category or enters a search term

The categories are color-coded to indicate where matching records occur

red, orange, and yellow (warm colors) — many records

green and blue (cool colors) — fewer records

white — no matching records


Dewey Browser

Summaries can be displayed in English, French, German, Spanish, or Swedish

Search and browse results can also be limited to resources written in a particular language

The DeweyBrowser has been deployed over three collections of resources:

ebooks - 210,000+ electronic books

wcat – 2.2 million of the most widely held WorldCat records

abr14 – selected data from the Abridged Edition 14 of DDC

WorldCat and ebooks collections are linked to the Find in a Library web service





Dewey Browser

Abridged 14 collection includes a collaborative editing feature that enables authorized users to suggest index terms for a DDC class (Suggested terms)

Suggested terms will be delivered to interested users via RSS
