Early next week the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong and ‘Buzz’ Aldrin’s famous walk on the moon will be celebrated. An estimated 500 million people crowded around TV sets or radios and listened and / or watched the event. I was one of them. As a young lad I watched the event on TV at school and little did I think of how our world would change in the space of what is relatively a very

short time.

NASA is still planning a trip to Mars and perhaps it is time to reflect on this venture. It’s true that mankind has been all the way to the moon and back, but most of us still have trouble meeting the new neighbour. Yes, we claim that we’ve conquered outer space, but at that same time we’ve lost inner peace.

About 500 people have seen first-hand the entire globe suspended in space – just hanging there. Only 12 men have had the opportunity to walk on the moon and for each one of them it has been a powerful, spiritual experience. Buzz Aldrin performed a Christian communion service on the moon and then read from the gospel of John. You can read about how it was covered up here:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/belief/2012/sep/13/buzz-aldrin-communion-moon

James Irwin was the eighth man on the moon and he was the first to drive the moon buggy and he has regularly shared how the visit to the moon impacted him. He describes how standing on the moon he looked back at the earth and while closing one eye he held up his thumb and covered the planet. Every continent, every ocean, every mountain range, every city, town and village, every person, every dispute, every annoyance, every friend, every foe – was all under his thumb. Irwin stated that he felt incredibly small. It reminds me of what the Bible says in Job 26:7 “He stretches out the north over the empty place, and hangs the earth upon nothing.”

It seems to me that when we leave the devices alone and go outside and marvel at the incredible things in nature we find ourselves looking for a connection with the Creator God. Whether we use the telescope or the microscope there is unbelievable complexity that points to a designer. Regrettably life is too busy for us all in the twenty-first century and we are distracted from deep thinking on the big questions in life.

Perhaps it’s time to put down the device, turn off the TV and to spend some time thinking and wondering. Socrates said, ὁ ... ἀνεξέταστος βίος οὐ βιωτὸς ἀνθρώπῳ - ‘the unexamined life is not worth living’, and maybe that is a little harsh. But a life that has meaning and purpose, and where we reflect on the big questions - is indeed a far richer and fulfilling

It’s worth a thought.

TERM 3 BOOK WEEK COMING UP

Our yearly Book Week will be celebrated this term during

Week 6, August 19-23

Theme – The Bible “My Secret Power”

For this year we have altered the Book Week theme to align more closely with our Christian values and emphasis.

Each class has chosen a Bible character or story to portray during

our Book Character Parade. The class teacher will decide whether to let students come as any character in that particular story or may

assign different roles to students that relate to the story. Students may also decide to come as a different Bible character to

that studied in class for that week. For further details on how you can assist please consult your child’s

teacher or a note may be sent home outlining what is needed.

Students will parade in their costumes in the gym on Friday, August 23.

Parents are also welcome to participate in the parade as your

favourite Bible character.
