Term (Research) Paper AssignmentChicano/Latino Music in the United States
M1162014 Spring Quarter
The Term Paper must be submitted to your section leader in hardcopy no later than 5:00 p.m. onFriday, May 23, 2014. The Paper must include: 1) a cover page; 2) an essay that includes an
introduction, a brief reviewof the literature(the literature review should appear within theintroduction section), and a summary or conclusion; 3) endnotes or footnotes; and 4) a
bibliography (references or works cited in the paper). The paper may include figures and/or
illustrations. The Paper will be officially late if received by your section leader after 5:00 p.m.on May 23, 2014.
TOPIC
Anything that relates to this ethnomusicology course--in other words, you can write aboutanything that concerns any Chicano/Latino musical tradition or expression in the United States.
This may include musicians, music ensembles, music instruments, and/or music genres or styles. The analytical framework for your papers topic should adhere to the precepts of maintenance,
change, and adaptationof traditional musical expression. Thus, factors of identity, conflict, nationalism, reinterpretation, and innovation should be part of your analysis. The paper may be,
but need not be, based on a live musical performance.
**The paper topic should be selected no later than thesixth weekof the quarter, in consultation
with the students section leader/TA or the instructor.**
For your fi nal papers I would li ke to see the following:
Cover Page Papers should have a cover page with the following information: (1) your student ID
number; (2) title of the paper; (3) course number; (4) your section leaders name; and (5)the date. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE PAPER.
Page limit
The paper must be at least eight, but not more than ten printed pages. You can go higher,
but I would advise you only to do this if you think the material that is going to produce
the extra pages is truly essential, remarkable, and worthwhile. The following do notcount towards the page limit: cover page, appendices (figured illustrations, if any), and
bibliography.
Font size
Papers should be double-spaced. Please do not use a font larger than 12-point if using
Times Roman or a similar serif font, or 10-point font if using Arial or a similar sans-serif
font.

Style Standard
The paper must be referenced appropriately, using footnotes or endnotes, and a
bibliography that adheres to Chicago Manual of Style. All notes, citations, references, bibliographical entries, printed and digital sources (internet, eBooks, iTunes, etc.), must
follow the Chicago Manual of Style as well.
Wri ting Style
Please do write the paper in standard scholarly prose; this assignment is meant to be
practice in writing this way.
Guideli nes for Body of paper
I would like to see some sound organization. For instance, start with an Introduction that clearly
states the topic of your research, why you were interested in it, why you think it is important
(relevance), and the purpose(s) of your study. Summarize the information that you found(including a brief literature review). Next, present a discussion of your own that analyzes your
research findings in some way (i.e., I want to see your thoughts here). Then finish with aconcluding paragraph that refers back to the stated purpose in the Introduction.
The paper must incorporate references to class readings in addition to other related literature. Itis expected that some of the theoretical and historical perspectives presented in class will
constitute a portion of the analytical structure.
I n sum, the Paper should include:
Thesis statement: a clear, focused statement of the topic and relevant theory
Statement of intent: a coherent argument Brief literature review: evidence of the author's knowledge of previous research
Theoretical framework: (include if stated in the literature)
Discussion of research findings: demonstrate central point of essay
Significance: a statement of the implications and contribution to the ethnomusicology
discipline, and
Concluding remarks: derived from your discussion of your topic, and summarizing theimportant points that you made in your paper.
References: Bibli ographyI expect to see the product of library research (not just use of the Internet, unless that is the only
resource available for your project). Make use of some library references (books or journal
articles) relevant to your argument. DO NOT USE Wikipedia as a source!

your paper to your TA sometime before the deadline.
Basis of grading
Grading a term paper is always a judgment call; there is no way to reduce it to a well-defined
procedure. However, when grading a paper, I always ask myself the following questions:
Since this is an ethnomusicology course, is the paper about ethnomusicology?
Does it show the student learned something in the course?
Is the writing well done? I.e., is it well organized and fully intelligible?
Is the prose in standard academic English, free of distracting mechanical errors?
Is the paper focused, or does it ramble from topic to topic?
Are enough facts given to illustrate and back up the points being made?
Did the student describe and develop the topic accurately?
Is the paper original? (Extra points may be earned for originality and inspiration).
Grades will be based on the following:
(1) Introduction - how well the purpose of the paper is stated (10 points)(2) Data - both research and writing (particularly organization of the material; 50 points)
(3) Analysis - personal thought/input/analysis/use of the data (30 points)
(4) Presentation details - use of references and/or musical culture information (10 points)
