    1.0 Introduction:

Business mathematics seeks to solve economic problems by means of methods and concepts

provided in the sphere of mathematical science.

It is clear to everyone that bankers crunch numbers on a daily basis. However, one also comes

upon mathematics everywhere where the future developments and trends are to be determined.

Business mathematics is all about how the problems from the realm of business and technology

can be translated into the language of mathematics and then be solved by means of mathematical

models. Quite often this involves more than one mathematical model - what makes the matter

    even more exciting

Business mathematics may be define different mathematical formulas or mathematical steps

which are taken for development in business. !arge number of business theories which is used to

solve business problems are included in business mathematics. "rom this simple definition, we

find that business mathematics is nothing more than different formulas and theories like interest

rate, annuity rate, matrix theory, linear programming theory and probability theory and many

more. #ith these formulas and theories business can calculate many solutions of different

     problems.

Business mathematics is mathematics used by commercial enterprises to record and manage

business operations. $ommercial organi%ations use mathematics in accounting, inventory

management, marketing, sales forecasting, and financial analysis. &athematics typically used in

commerce includes elementary arithmetic, elementary algebra, statistics and probability.

Business management can be done more effective in some cases by use of more advanced

mathematics such as calculus, matrix algebra and linear programming.

2.0 Business Mathematics:#ithout mathematics there would be no '('s, no weather forecasts, no barcode on chocolate

bar, no online shopping, and also no possibilities for surfing the web for downloading favorite

ring tones. $hallenges such as these show up in business on a daily basis and can be efficiently

solved by the help of mathematical methods) in business mathematics we will not only learn how

to calculate and analy%e, but also how to sort out open *uestions into business contexts and solve

them, often bringing about substantial societal benefits.

By occupying our self with business mathematics, we will learn how to think out of the box,

sharpen our ability to think in abstract terms, and train ourself how to more precisely formulate

    and structure causal relationships.

    2.1 Use of Business Mathematics:

&athematics is used in most aspects of daily life. &any of the top +obs such as business

consultants, computer consultants, airline pilots, company directors and a host of others re*uire a

solid understanding of basic mathematics, and in some cases re*uire a *uite detailed knowledge

of mathematics. It also plays important role in business, like Business mathematics bycommercial enterprises to record and manage business operations. &athematics typically used in

commerce includes elementary arithmetic, such as fractions, decimals, and percentages,

elementary algebra, statistics and probability. Business management can be made more effective

in some cases by use of more advanced mathematics such as calculus, matrix algebra and linear

     programming.

$ommercial organi%ations use mathematics in accounting, inventory management, marketing,

    sales forecasting, and financial analysis.

In cademia, Business &athematics includes mathematics courses taken at an undergraduate

level by business students. hese courses are slightly less difficult and do not always go into the

same depth as other mathematics courses for people ma+oring in mathematics or science fields.

he two most common math courses taken in this form are Business $alculus and Business

/tatistics. 0xamples used for problems in these courses are usually real-life problems from the

business world. n example of the differences in coursework from a business mathematics

course and a regular mathematics course would be calculus. In a regular calculus course, students

would study trigonometric functions. Business calculus would not study trigonometric functions

because it would be time- consuming and useless to most business students, except perhaps

    economics ma+ors.

0conomics ma+ors who plan to continue economics in graduate school are strongly encouraged

to take regular calculus instead of business calculus, as well as linear algebra and other advanced

    math courses.

1ther sub+ects typically covered in business mathematics curriculum include)

    &atrix algebra

    !inear programming

    2robability theory

nother meaning of business mathematics, sometimes called commercial math or consumer

math, is a group of practical sub+ects used in commerce and everyday life. In schools, these

sub+ects are often taught to students who are not planning a university education.

n undergrad or graduate business math course might include a review of elementary arithmetic,

including fractions, decimals, and percentages. 0lementary algebra is often included as well, in

the context of solving practical business problems. he practical applications typically include

checking accounts, price discounts, markups and markdowns, payroll calculations, simple and

compound interest, consumer and business credit, and mortgages. he emphasis in these courses

is on computational skills and their practical application, with practical application

predominating. "or example, while computational formulas are covered in the material on

interest and mortgages, the use of prepared tables based on those formulas is also presented and

emphasi%ed. &athematics can provide powerful support for business decisions. In their later

business careers, this will motivate them to consult with mathematicians and employ effective

    *uantitative methods.

&athematics provides many important tools for economics and other business fields. However,

our discipline does not profit from this work when students 3who later become part of the general

public4 are unaware of its existence.

#hy do business consultants and directors need to know math5 you may ask. Business is all

about selling a product or service to make money. ll transactions within a business have to be

recorded in the $ompany accounts and *uite often involve very large sums of money. /o for

example, you need to be able to estimate the effect of changing numbers in the accounts when

trying to work out your expected performance for next year.

lso businesses rely heavily on using percentages, in particular anyone who works as a sales

person will need to be *uick at mental arithmetic, approximation and in working out percentages.

he more percentage discount you give a customer when you sell them a product, the less profit

your company will make 3and *uite often the less you will be paid4 so it really does pay to know

your math. If you work as a sales assistant in many stores you now need to have the ability to

calculate the cost of goods and change the customers re*uire without using the till.

Businesses like to know that you can cope if the machines break down and also they believe that

you can give better customer service if you can respond to customers who know their

    mathematics.

"inally, there are +obs around where you can escape from using any math at all - refuse collector,

builder6s laborer, farm hand etc. However, when you invest your hard earned cash in the bank or

building society or get a loan - how do you know that you are not being ripped off5 7ou need to

use math to calculate compound interest rates 3to see how much your savings can grow4. 7ou

also need to use math to understand the monthly percentages, which are added to your credit

cards or bank loans. his is a good reason to understand mathematics.

    2.2 Advantages of Business Mathematics:

    - #ith interest rate of math, businessman can calculate the interest on debt, loan or bonds.

    - #ith matrix, businessman can calculate salary bill of different department and branches.

    - #ith !inear programming, business can determine the *uantity of two products at which

profit is maximi%e or cost is minimi%e.

    - #ith discounting and factoring techni*ue businessman can calculate present value of bill,

rate of discounting the bill and banker6s gain.

    - #ith currency translation formula of math, businessman can cost of currency between

    two countries.

herefore it may take a long time for Bangladesh to start importing electric cars. But $G; auto

rickshaws have been a great alternative so far.

It is clear that the vehicles industry will grow more and more over time as districts like /ylhet,

hulna etc. are also being developed faster. lso more and more brands are being interested in

    opening manufacturing factories in Bangladesh.

    .0 A''lication and Im'lication in Automo#ile Industry

.1 $o, math is used in the 'rocess of #uilding automo#iles

    ;rafting

rtists and car designers who draw models of cars for production need to understand perspective

to make their drawings and blueprints look right. his includes knowledge of angles and line

lengths, as well as different geometric shapes. $ar wheels, for instance, are really circles, hood

tops are arcs, and windows are *uadrilaterals.

    arts

0ach part of an automobile has to fit together like a glove, or the automobile wonKt work

properly or be safe. &ath is used to measure every part and to make sure those parts are the right

si%e to come together as designed. his includes everything from the dimensions of screws to the

    width of the frame.

    Assem#ly

&uch of the assembly of cars now is done with the help of robots and other technology. he

robots are controlled by speciali%ed computer programs, and these programs must specify exact

parameters for operation. hey must tell the robot, for instance, to hoist a part x number of feet,

apply x pounds of pressure, and distribute x gallons of paint per s*uare inch. dditionally, the

assembly line must be built under exact dimensions, so there is ample room for assembly to

occur safely and efficiently if a robot arm needs to swing back and forth, for example, the robot

needs to be positioned to have a certain number of feet in clearance.

    ricing

uto manufacturers want to make a profit on the cars they sell, they have to keep track of the

cost of every single part. &ath is used to calculate which parts manufacturer can deliver the best

price on needed parts and materials. It also used to determine the final cost of the vehicle. If parts

cost x taka and labor costs y, and the company wants to make a profit percentage of %, for

example, then the company would use the following formula to determine the sell price) total

    cost T 3xUy4%U3xUy4

    roduction 5atio

&ath is used to determine how many cars can be produced an hour, day, week or month. If an

auto manufacturer receives an order from corporate to increase production by x cars a day, for

example, the speed of the assembly line has to be ad+usted by a particular percentage to

accommodate the number of cars needed. ll of the robots of the assembly line would need to

have their speeds ad+usted through their programming or manually by the same percentage.

    roduction !ime

$ertain aspects of auto manufacturing must occur under specific time parameters. 2aint, for

instances, has to cure for a specific amount of time. &ath is used to determine how long that time

needs to be under a specific temperature given the chemical composition of the paint.

    roduct lanning

utomobile bodies might be born in the imagination of designers, but the car itself starts out

with market analysis. 0very car sold has to fit into a certain niche, and compete with others in

that niche if there are any. product planner6s +ob is to analy%e market data, figure out what6s

selling, where it6s selling and for how much. 2roduct planners have to look at horsepower,

weight, fuel economy, and dimensional data and send their ideal specifications the engineering

and design departments. In a very big way then, it6s the product planner6s heavily math-intensive

market analysis that dictates almost every critical dimension and specification of the finished

     product.

    8hassis &ngineering

n engineer6s primary +ob is to build a chassis and components to meet the product planner6s

specifications -- which is a tad more involved than it sounds. $omputer-aided modeling has done

a lot for chassis engineers, who can now digitally build a chassis in a computer, and crash

test it over and over again using sophisticated calculus and physics algorithms. 2hysics

modeling has become a field of mathematics and science in its own right, and the results of that

modeling affect every aspect of chassis design and material use. ;eometry and trigonometry are

all-important elements of suspension design, as they are pretty much everywhere else a load-

bearing component has to bolt to another one.

elements have to work together to make for an interior layout that6s safe, convenient, and

    comfortable and hopefully good looking.

    Manufacture

fter all of the design elements are in place, the cars off to the assembly line. #ith all of the

robots involved in today6s manufacturing process, there6s scarcely a point in it that isn6t

absolutely reliant on computer calculations, geometry, trigonometry, welding and material

physics to measure, machine and assemble components. #ith today6s manufacturing processes,

everything has to be measured to the nanometer, finished and fit precisely in. &athematics even

come into play in workflow analysis, as manufacturers are always looking for ways to make the

most efficient use of their workers6 and robots6 time. oyota is famous for thisV its kai%en

system of continuous improvement by constant analysis has long been an industry standard in

     production.

    8om'letion and ;elivery

car6s not through with math once it is built. fter production, a certain number go into product

testing or *uality control. /ome are sent off to be crash tested, where physics has the final say on

the production run. 1thers are road-tested on a test track, where precise measurements are taken

of the car6s acoustic *ualities, ride, handling, power output and emissions. It takes math -- a lot of

math -- to gather and correlate all of these results. "inally, a car has to go through a logistical

process for delivery. Here, time and distance tables are calculated, delivery costs are tabulated,

and the car becomes +ust another tracking number in a vast system until it finally arrives on the

dealership lot. 1nce there the owner takes possession and drives away, never knowing that his

newest pri%e is a machine made of numbers from beginning to end.
