Dear Parents/Carers
It is important to celebrate the positive efforts of our students, and the hard work they have put into their learning over the year. This shows how much we value education and learning in our society. All parents and family members are invited to attend our final Presentation and Awards Assembly on Friday 6 December at 12.30 pm for Transition to Year 2, and from 1.30 pm for Primary Years 3 to 6. These special assemblies will acknowledge the hard work and positive efforts of all students in their learning achievements over the year. Students from each class will be awarded the following: Improvement – a student who has demonstrated their best in all learning areas Academic Achievement – a student who has made outstanding progress in their academic learning Citizenship - a student who is an outstanding role model and helping hand to her fellow classmates There will also be awards for the Australia Day Citizen Award, Board of Studies Year 6 Award, Chief Minister’s Literacy Awards (one per class), Principal and Assistant Principal Awards, a Sustainability Class and Individual Awards and Music, PE and Library Awards. We encourage all parents, carers and friends to attend the appropriate one of these special assemblies and join us for afternoon tea afterwards . We look forward to seeing you all there. In the last week of school, classes will be celebrating their positive efforts with a Class Party on Wednesday 11 December. Parents will receive a separate letter from class teachers in regards to what students will be required to bring. Students will be participating in cleaning up activities in the classroom and around the school on Thursday 12 December, being the last day of school for students. Taking responsibility for keeping our school clean and tidy is an important value. Over the next few weeks teachers will be asking for all books to be returned to school. Please help your child find any missing library books or readers. If you have lost a reader or library book, then you may be asked to replace the cost of the book. Thank you for your assistance with our end of year procedures. We are still in the process of sorting out staff for next year and hoping to keep the large majority of teachers currently working at Wanguri. We will be seeking approval this week to greatly increase the focus and our expenditure on ICT and hope to employ an ICT teacher to work across the school and enhance the use of computer technologies in all classes. We will continue with our specialist programs in Sustainability, Music and Physical Education. The next general assembly this week at 8.30 am, Friday 29 November is a goodbye to Jenny Robinson. This will be followed by an informal cuppa and catchup with Jenny for parents, friends and community members. Special guests will be attending and saying a few words. Jenny has made a huge contribution to Wanguri in her nine years here driving academic achievement upwards to excellent levels. We look forward to seeing you there this Friday. Jenny Nash

Did you know that…..
On 1 February 2013 the Northern Territory introduced child car restraint laws.
What are the new laws? All children under 7 years of age must be secured in an approved child restraint or booster seat when travelling in a vehicle. The type of the restraint depends on the age of the child:
If a child is too small for the restraint, keep them in the previous level of restraint for as long as necessary. If a child is too large for the restraint, they may move to the next level of restraint.
Why are the new laws being introduced? The new laws are designed to ensure that children are better protected when travelling in cars. Children need to be properly restrained to reduce the chance of serious injury or death if involved in a car crash. A child restraint protects your child from being ejected from the vehicle and distributes the extreme crash forces over the strongest parts of the child’s body. Research shows that children under 7 years using an adult seatbelt are at least 4 times as likely to sustain a head injury in a crash compared to children using an appropriate child restraint.
What are the penalties and fines? $480 and 3 demerit points per child not appropriately restrained.
Where can I get more information? For further information visit www.roadsafety.nt.gov.au or call 1800 720 144. or contact Kidsafe NT at www.kidsafent.com.au on (08) 8985 1085
How old is your child? Use this restraint
Under 6 months Rear facing restraint (e.g. baby capsule) – must not be in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows of seats
6 months to under 4 years Rear facing or forward facing restraint – must not be in the front row of a vehicle with two or more rows of seats
4 years to under 7 years Forward facing restraint or booster seat – can only sit in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows when all other seats are occupied by younger children in an approved child restraint
Over 7 years Adult seatbelt or a booster seat

Mondays and Fridays.
This week I will be finalising the farewell packages for all of our students who are leaving Wanguri on posting. There are quite a few families leaving this year and it could be quite a stressful time for some children. If you have any concerns about how they will cope with saying goodbye - whether they are leaving or staying on at the school - then let me know so I can provide them with additional support. In last minute news, The Hamilton Club at Robertson Barracks is hosting a Christmas Party on behalf of DCO this weekend on Saturday 30 November, from 11am. There will be a continuous buffet lunch, loads of activities and a ‘special visitor’ at 2 pm. Please call DCO Darwin on 8935 7900 or email them the details of how many adults and children will be attending, the PMKEYS number of the serving member and notification of any allergies or dietary requirements to [email protected] The RSVP date is Wednesday 27 November; however, I have let them know that there may be a couple of late notifications, so please advise them as soon as possible to ensure that you and your family can attend.
