Principal’s Report

NAIDOC Week

This week Lismore Public School will be celebrating NAIDOC week through participation in a variety of cultural activities.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by

Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity for our school to participate in a range of activities and to

support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Monday saw Warren Williams deliver a welcome to country and address at our flag raising ceremony. Blake Rhodes, a

former students of Lismore Public School, answered questions from our students about his life since leaving school and

his music. It was a lovely ceremony and our students are to be commended on their behaviour and the respectful way they

listened to our speakers. Thank you to our community members and parents who attended and shared morning tea

following the ceremony.

On Tuesday Rory and John took our Aboriginal Boys dance group to the Lismore Preschool to perform. The boys did a

great job and the children at the preschool were captivated by their performance. Thanks to Rory and John for all their

hard work with our dance group.

All students will be rotating through a series of cultural activities on Wednesday and Friday mornings. These activities will

include weaving, a rainforest hunt, cooking and art activities. Students will be supported by teaching staff and parent

volunteers in these activities and will work in mixed groups of students K-6.

On Thursday selected students will be travelling to the Lismore Showground to participate in the NAIDOC Activities

organised by Lismore City Council. These students have already received their invitations and should have returned

permission notes to the office.

The Indigenous voice of this country is over 65,000 plus years old. The 2019 NAIDOC theme “Voice, Treaty, Truth - Let’s

work together for a shared future” acknowledges that Indigenous languages are the first words spoken on this continent

and they passed down lore, culture and knowledge for over a millennia. Thanks to Mrs McDonald, the Lismore Public

School Aboriginal Education team and our Aboriginal parent community for their organisation of activities for our students

celebrate NAIDOC week.

Kindergarten 2020

Last week we held our Kindergarten 2020 Information evening. It was lovely to meet our prospective Kindergarten

students and their families. We appreciated them braving the cold weather to attend and find out about our wonderful

school. If you know of any parents who are considering Lismore Public School as an educational option for their children

please ask them to make an appointment to come and visit and have a chat. We can then provide them with details about

our Orientation program and other activities happening at the school that they may wish to be involved in.

School Holidays

Friday is the last day of school for Term 2 for students and teachers at Lismore Public School. I would like to take this

opportunity to thank parents and carers who have supported our school in any way this term. It has been very busy with

capital works and this has meant disruption for students, staff and families. Your support during this unsettled time has

been appreciated. Stage 3 students should be back in their regular classrooms by the end of week 2 next term following

the upgrading of the fire stairs, the painting of corridors and the laying of new vinyl.

Term 3 is looking to be very busy with our “Night at the Movies” musical extravaganza as part of our Education week

celebrations on the 8th and 9

th of August. We will also be hosting our annual Book Week character parade and have a

dance group participate in the Lismore Performing Arts Festival, just to name a few!

Enjoy your break from the routine of school and take the time to rest and relax ready for a Term 3 packed with wonderful

learning, sporting and cultural experiences. School staff will be participating in Professional Learning and refreshing their

CPR and practical anaphylaxis training on Monday 22nd

July. I look forward to seeing students back at school on Tuesday

23rd

July .

Have a safe and relaxing holiday and I’ll see you next term.

OFFICE & ADMIN AREA

Lismore Public School students are absolute stars! So it's only befitting that they take centre stage for our next musical extravaganza,

"A Night at the Movies." Classes will bust out to their favourite films' soundtracks to help celebrate Education Week.

Keep a lookout for more information as it's released. The glitzy event will be held on Thursday and Friday of Term 3 Week 3 (8th & 9th August).

3D Printing Excursion At Wyrallah Public

Open your mind to the excitement of 3D printing. As 6 students from Lismore Public School and

Mrs Ramsay travelled out to Wyrallah Public to learn about 3D printing. We experienced 3D printing with

the students of Wyrallah Public and their 3D models. It was taught by Kath Lollback who previously came

to our school to do STEM Share sessions. They explained what it was used for. They created pencil holders, bag tags, and handball holders. We tried

designing our own Bag Tags on Tinkercad, a software app for 3D printing. We are looking forward

to borrowing the printer next term and teaching others how to create 3D items using a 3D printer.

We thank Kath for showing us the joys of 3D printing, and thank Wyrallah for letting us come and

mentoring us in the world of 3D printing.

By Xanthe, Dylan and Sophia.
