Deadline for newsletter articles is STRICTLY 9am Tuesday via email address above. FROM THE PRINCIPALS DESK PUPIL FREE DAY Please note that the final Pupil Free Day as approved by School Council is scheduled for Tuesday 19th December . Staff will be using this day for the review and planning of priorities for early 2018. Particular attention will be paid to our Literacy programs across the College with a presentation also to be conducted by Glenn Lilley dealing with Schoolwide Positive Behaviours, a wellbeing program that will receive strong focus next year. SCHOOL CLOSURE & 2018 RESUMPTION Our school year will conclude on Friday 22nd December with dismissal at 1.30pm. School will resume for students on Wednesday 31st January 2018. Staff will have already resumed school and will spend the preceding days undertaking further curriculum planning and preparation. SCHOOL CAPTAINS 2018 We are presently working through a process for the selection of school captains for 2018. Six students have nominated for these positions and this is most encouraging. To have students willing to take extra responsibility and put themselves forward as leaders of the student body is a positive sign. Well communicate a decision on this at our Awards Night next week. SOCIAL MEDIA USE On Monday 11th December, we had a visit from Vanessa Bates from Victoria Police re the use of social media with a specific focus on sexting. Social media plays a very significant role in the lives of many and our work in educating is increasingly extending into this area. The specific concerns around sexting are a responsibility of us all, as is the appropriate use of social media. Concerns generated by inappropriate social media use are certainly not limited to school and this is another area we need to continue working on together. More will be done on this in 2018. FORWARD PLANNING I know at this time of the year everyone is keen to know the arrangements for next year; who is teaching what year levels and what classes are the children in. While we have done a lot of work in setting the structures in place, there are still some staffing and timetabling decisions to be finalised. For that reason I am reluctant to publish an incomplete list of this detail. I will do so if we are able to finalise matters by the end of this school year. BEST WISHES As our school year comes to a close we say good-bye to three of our teaching staff. Lianne Brett is taking a 12 month transfer to Kennington PS and we wish her well in the new experiences she will encounter in this large primary school. Sharon Polkinghorne is taking an extended period of long service leave and we wish her well with what this time away from teaching might present. Perhaps a long and well deserved rest! Delwyn Collins has completed her contract and we hope that opportunity presents for her to secure a role that meets her needs into the future. Thank you ladies for your commitment and work at the College. THANK YOU As this is our final newsletter for the year, I wish to extend thanks on a number of levels, although my observations are obviously limited only to one term. Most of our students have a somewhat unique experience in undertaking their education in a P-12 setting and the experiences will have varied significantly across the student body. Well done to those who have achieved well, to those who have done their best and I encourage those who might have experienced challenge to face next year with a renewed desire to improve and to have an enjoyable year. Many thanks to the staff of the college who have worked hard, sometimes under trying conditions, to provide the DATELINE Tuesdays - Playgroup from 9:00am to 10:30am Dec Tues 19th Pupil Free Day Wedderburn College Awards Night Fri 22nd Last Day Term 4 dismissal at 1:30pm Jan Tues 30th Book Collection Day 12.00-6.00pm Wed 31st Classes start Prep-Year 12

students with a learning program that meets their needs. The planning, preparation, teaching, assessment and reporting work involved requires great commitment and my observations this term have affirmed that the staff of this college have a genuine desire to do well. Thank you for your professionalism and dedication.

The college is clearly meeting the needs of most students however for some there are challenging times experienced. I have no doubt that all parents/carers only want the best for their children and I thank you for your willingness to make contact and discuss issues as they arise. Together we can make a difference.

I’d like to extend wishes for a Happy Christmas and hope for a safe and enjoyable holiday period for all.

Mr Ron Payne, Principal

PREP/ONE Our Swimming sessions are coming to an end. The children have loved these and have learnt so much. Special thanks to Mrs Turnbull for organising this. Our year is also drawing to a close. YEAR 7 AND 8 Dear Parents and Carers, I have had a wonderful time teaching at Wedderburn College over the last 13 years. I am working at Kennington PS for the 2018 school year as Team Leader of the Year 2 teachers and students. I am also teaching Year 2! Quite a change from Year 7 & 8 this year! It will be another challenge, but one I am looking forward to. Thanks to all the wonderful teachers, parents, carers and students that I have worked with here at Wedderburn College. I thank you all for your time, support and friendship. It brings, for the moment, an end to 42 years of connection with the school since I began here in 1975 in Year 7 when my family moved to Wedderburn! Have a wonderful Christmas, harvest and holiday everyone and I would love to hear from any of you next year to catch up with what you are doing. [email protected] Kind regards Lianne Brett Year 7 Christmas class party tomorrow, Thursday, 12.15pm. Please bring a plate to share and your KK present. SENIOR STUDENT ADVOCACY Our Year 11 and 12 students have completed their academic year and our Year 10s have completed their ‘step up’ in preparation for their studies next year. Excitingly, our 2018 School College Captain interviews have taken place over the last fortnight. Application endorsements and interviews have been completed and our applicants will be informed of the outcome shortly. Our Year 12 VCE students will all have a nervous wait this week, with their ATAR and subject scores released on Monday the 12th of December. It’s important to remind parents and our students of the importance of maintaining good mental wellbeing during this often stressful time. It is also important for young people to remember that ‘you are not your score’. It is also important to remember that an ATAR is a rank, not a score out of 100. There is no pass or fail mark - everyone who receives an ATAR has successfully completed the requirements for the VCE. The ATAR is a tool to allow tertiary institutions to compare students who have completed different combinations of VCE subjects, and simply shows each student's achievement in relation to all other students - for example, if you receive an ATAR of 64.75, this means you've performed better than 64.75 per cent of the Year 12 age group that year. Once scores are released, staff will be available to conference with Year 12 students around their University, TAFE and trade pathways and options. Students are also encouraged to be in touch with MIPs through the NCLLEN Facebook page. The next opportunity for our Senior Sub school to be together will be at our annual Awards Night on Tuesday the 19th of December. Families will receive letters in the mail if your student has received an award and will be required to collect it on the evening of our Awards night. ALL YEAR 12 STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO BE IN ATTENDANCE to receive their completion certificates. All students are expected to be in full school uniform on the night. SUMMER SCHOOL: A range of information sheets and lecture booking forms are available in the Senior Student Advocate’s office for any student beginning Year 11 or 12 in 2018 who may like to undertake some preparation lectures or classes curing the summer holidays. Please make sure to collect before the end of this week. IMPORTANT DATES: Friday 15th December – VCAA Examination results and ATAR released Tuesday 19th December – College Awards Night Mrs Lauren Barker, Senior Student Advocate

WEDDERBURN COLLEGE BREAKFAST PROGRAM As part of the Wedderburn College Breakfast Program the school is lucky enough to receive extra breakfast food items sent to the school from [email protected]. As some of these breakfast foods do not get used up, each week there is an excess of different breakfast food items. If any parents/carers are interested in taking some of these foods home, they will be accessible for anyone interested in taking them home to share with family. Please bring a bag for you to use. Thank you for your support in this year's Breakfast Program which allows students to have breakfast foods ready to be eaten before classes start for two days a week. Thank you to the volunteers; Rebecca Buschmann, Dede Williams and Year 11 student, Olivia Holbert. Mrs Trina Vaughan, Breakfast Program Coordinator
