Kia Ora Welcome to the 2020 school year!

We had a great Whakatau on Monday to welcome our new children and their families to our school. If you were not able to attend I extend a very warm welcome to you, on behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff. Our school motto is Together We climb and the staff, Board of Trustees, Whānau group, and PTA proudly work as a team to make it a positive and fun place to learn. Each teacher has worked hard to prepare for the new year, so that all of our students, both new and current students, have a positive start to the new school year. Our teachers are excited to have your children in their classes and look forward to getting to know them and be part of their life this year. The year has started well, and it is great to see the children, families, and teachers back with so much enthusiasm after a good holiday. There is lots going on:

Waitangi Day tomorrow 6th February and a Teacher Only Day on Friday 7th Enjoy the long weekend, don’t come to school on Friday! Full week next week.

Meet the Teacher Evening– Tuesday 5.30pm 18th February -this year there will be one night for the whole school with all staff present. Bring a picnic tea and take the opportunity to meet your children’s teachers-we look forward to seeing you.

Swimming-it is compulsory, so please send togs to school every day. There is instructional swimming in class time, and free swims at lunchtime. It does refresh the children for the afternoon programme.

Lastly, thanks for the wonderful attendance at the end of year assembly-it was a special event. We have had very positive feedback about the changes we made that meant every child in the school took part.

As we start the 2020 year, it is a good time to be very grateful for the beautiful environment in which we learn, for the children, their families, and their teachers who make up the learning community that is Pirongia School. We trust that all our children will have positive and rewarding year and that they will thrive and progress in our learning environment, make new friends, and take up many challenges and opportunities.

The NZ Transport Agency are reviewing

the speed limits along State Highways

23 (Hamilton to Raglan), SH39

(Whatawhata to Otorohanga) & SH31

(to Kawhia) to determine what the safe

and appropriate speed limits are along

these roads, with the aim of changing

those speed limits where deemed

necessary. Before any decisions are

made the Agency is keen to speak to

people who use these roads and hear

their thoughts.

We are looking to hold a drop-in

session for people to come and see

what the proposed new limits could be

and tells us what they think. As a key

community hub we would like to hold

a drop in session at Pirongia School.

37 sleeps until the School Fair!!! 13 March 2020 Volunteers are needed to help with the set up and pack up on the day of the fair. If you are able to help with this please contact Ruth Webb on 021 131 6736. Please keep a look out for more fair notices coming out over the coming weeks (in the children’s Homelink books and in the newsletter/PTA Facebook page). There will be a notice shortly calling for stall helpers and gazebos; or please contact Ruth directly on the number above if you have a gazebo you are able to lend for the fair.

SCHOOLSHIRTS—Our new shirts have arrived and are avail-able to purchase from the office $36 for children sizes. We

have some old style shirts still available at a reduced price of

$20 if you would like to take advantage of that great price.

New shirts are being fazed in, so there is no need to rush into

buying a new one if you don’t wish to.

BUS STUDENTS:- All Eligible travelers have been issued

with new blue tags for the next 2 years. If you require a new

one this will now incur a $5 replacement fee.

Ineligible bus students payment for Term 1 travel is due by

Friday 14th Feb. $35 per child per term.

POOL;- Keys are still available for the rest of the swimming

season (early/mid March approx) $40

Kia ora e te whānau Nau mai, hoki mai ki te Tau Hou o 2020. Haere mai, haere mai. Welcome to 2020, the beginning of a new decade. We have some exciting ideas for the year and look forward to sharing these with you and having your input. Our first Whānau Hui date has not yet been set, but we should know this by next week. So keep an eye out. Also look out for a letter in your child's book bag next week and keep a close eye on the Facebook Page - Pirongia School Whānau Group. Te Reo will begin again next week, as will Kapahaka for returning kapahaka members, and following swimming sports we will begin recruitment for any new members for the year. A calendar of dates for events for the year will also be available shortly. Enjoy your Waitangi Day celebrations.

TERM ONE SPORTS These sports are on offer this term. More sports may also pop up as an option. We will advertise when the forms are available at the school office. With all the sports available we need parents to help coach and manage teams. If you can help us out please email the contact person listed. Please note - if we do not get parent help we cannot enter any teams. Miniball: Ages: Year 1 to Year 8 Year 1 & 2 Info: Wednesday nights at the TA College Gym Year 3 & 4 Info: Wednesday nights at the TA Events Centre Year 5 to 8 Info: Monday nights at the TA Events Centre Starts: Week of 24th Feb Cost: $30 Forms are available at the office and need to be returned next week Contact: Ella Muckle (emuckle@pirongia. school. nz) Cricket: Permission slips should be in TODAY. Teams are currently being sorted. Every effort will be made to place your child in a team that suits their age and level of experience. I will be in contact regarding practises and games early next week. GAMES START NEXT WEEK. It’s awesome to see the kids out there at lunchtimes practising!!!

Days: Softball Friday Nights – 5.30- 6.30 approx Hardball Saturday Mornings – 9 am- 12.30 pm approx. Term Dates: 14th/15th February (Week 2) – 27th/28th March (Week 7) Cost: $20 per child. This covers the cost of balls etc Playing uniform: School T-shirt, black shorts and shoes. Hardball – most gear is supplied however all children are required to wear a box, pads, helmet and gloves. White pants are recommended but optional. Practises: This will depend on coaches. Coaching/Parent support: We rely on parents to help us coach and support the children. Ideally each team needs to have at least 2 adults to help with coaching, scoring and managing. Please put your name down if you are able to help in any way.
