Welcome to the last edition of “Scoop” for the term. As always, one stands at this point and
wonders where the days and weeks have gone. I wish all of our students, staff and community a
wonderful Spring break and look forward to seeing you all again next term.
To our Year 12 and College I students on behalf of the staff, I wish you all every success in the
forthcoming Higher School Certificate examinations that commence at our school on Monday 14
October 2013 and conclude on Tuesday 5 November 2013. As a reminder to all of these students
the school facilities are available to students during the course of the examination period and staff
will be available for students to access if needed.
College I students are expected to be in attendance for their respective examinations but are not
required to be at school on the days in between. To College I students and parents I reinforce that
there will be no normal classes for these students until Monday 11 November 2013 when they
commence study of the second half of their HSC as our new College II.
Next term will be another very busy one, with student reports being completed in the first half prior
to our Presentation Night on Thursday 7 November 2013, followed by our Celebration of Learning
Day on Friday 8 November 2013. All students will commence learning for the new academic year on
Monday 11 November 2013 in their new school year.
In the last “Scoop” I raised the issue of bullying and suggested that I would continue to do so in
ensuing weeks. In this edition we are looking at:
TYPES OF BULLYING
Overt bullying (sometimes referred to as face-to-face or direct bullying) involves physical actions such as punching or kicking or overt verbal actions such as name-calling and insulting.
Covert bullying (sometimes referred to as indirect bullying) is a subtle type of non-physical bullying which isn't easily seen by others and is conducted out of sight, and therefore often unacknowledged by teachers. Covert bullying behaviours mostly inflict harm by damaging another's social reputation, peer relationships and self-esteem. Covert bullying can include repeatedly:
using hand gestures and weird or threatening looks
whispering, excluding, turning your back on a person
blackmailing, spreading rumours, threatening, stealing friends
breaking secrets, gossiping, criticising clothes and personalities.
The capacity to learn is a gift;
The ability to learn is a skill;
The willingness to learn is a choice.
Cyberbullying can be conducted in many ways, using different media including:
the sending of abusive texts or emails
taking and sharing unflattering or private images, including naked or sexual images
posting unkind messages or inappropriate images on social networking sites
excluding individuals from online chats or other communication
assuming the identity of the victim online and representing them in a negative manner or manner that may damage their relationship with others
repeatedly, and for no strategic reason, attacking players in online gaming.
Like other forms of bullying such as verbal abuse, social exclusion and physical aggression, cyberbullying has the potential to result in the target of bullying developing social, psychological and educational issues.
While cyberbullying is similar to real life bullying it also differs in the following ways:
it can be difficult to escape and invasive—it can occur 24/7 and a person can be targeted while at home
it can involve harmful material being widely and rapidly disseminated to a large audience, for example, rumours and images can be posted on public forums or sent to many people at once
it can provide the bully with a sense of relative anonymity and distance from the victim, so there is a lack of immediate feedback or consequences.
It is extremely important to add that cyperbullying also breaches the Commonwealth Telecommunications Act and could result in criminal charges and or fines.
Have a great break, see you all next term.
