Their joy and enthusiasm is infectious and had the whole audience joining in the madness and laughter.

I can’t wait to see the show again tonight and hope you can make it too. The final show is tomorrow night, with tickets still on sale at the College Office or at the venue.

I am pleased to inform families that our new principal Mr. Wayne Smith will be visiting St Mary’s on Wednesday 31st October. Wayne will be here to meet the staff and students and begin to familiarize himself with St Mary’s. I hope he can meet parents and grandparents who may be around on that day. There will be an assembly for Wayne to get to meet all the students. More information will follow next week.

It may not be visible to parents and grandparents who visit daily to drop off and pick up at each end of the day but if you have a spare minute to walk around towards the MP Hall and cast your eyes to the oval side you will see a new addition to the hall that is almost completed. It’s a 6m x 6m storage room to cater for all the PE/Sport/Arts equipment we have in the hall. We all love our MP Hall and it has served us very well but we just need more space for storage!

Preparing for Advent and Christmas begins each year at St Mary’s with the Samaritans Purse. Some families may not know a lot about this initiative which has become quite a tradition here at the College. The Samaritan's Purse is a Christian humanitarian Aid Organization that provides aid to people in physical need as a key part of Christian missionary work. This Foundation has many ‘arms’ to it and we like to get involved annually with the Shoe Box initiative, so called because the gifts are sent in a shoebox.

Each class is now collecting various items and products to pack into the shoeboxes. These gifts are then sent to children in parts of the world who may receive nothing else for Christmas. I commend this very important act of kindness and if you would like to know more about the Samaritans Purse and/or the Shoe Box initiative please click on this link for more information https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box/

What a week for student achievement! As well as all the students involved in the cast and crew of the College Production we have other students whose art works were exhibited last weekend at the Art Beyond The Divide Exhibition. Well done to the following students whose works were on show -: Denby Gardner, Erin Lawrence, Maggie McSperrin, Isabella Hutchins, Tenisha Raymond, Rebecca Leech, Scarlett Jenkins, Harry Homewood, Hunter Kelly, Ishwin Kaur, Jasper Radobuljac. And a very special mention of praise to Scarlet Jenkins who was awarded ‘The Best Young Artist Award’. Amazing!

Reminder:

Fees and Levies

Families are reminded that the due date for the payment of all fees and levies is 31st October. Thank you to all those families who have been making regular payments or have already paid their fees in full.

All families, particularly those families who are leaving the College at the end of the school year, are requested to contact me at the College by 19th October if they need to discuss alternative payment arrangements.

It is also a good time for those families who have direct debit or direct deposit arrangements in place to review their payment instalment amounts in order to meet their commitment in 2018 and into 2019. Information regarding the fees and levies for next year will be posted or emailed to all families in January 2019 but if you require any assistance before then regarding fee payment calculations please feel free to ask.

If you wish to discuss any matter relating to Fees and Levies, please do not hesitate to contact me at the College.

What’s been happening in P-4? It has been an exciting fortnight for Junior and Middle Primary. Both levels have had an incursion or excursion. Let’s start with Junior Primary…

Wild Action Zoo Incursion Last week Junior Primary were enthralled with several animals and mini beasts as part of the inquiry unit ‘It’s a Bug’s Life’, when Stuart arrived with his menagerie of

animals, reptiles and bugs from Wild Action Zoo. Stuart shared his love of Science and Australian animals with

all the students. They were treated to a showcase of animals that they were allowed to hold, whilst they learnt about their life-cycles. Some of the favourites were the 3 metre python, a tawny frogmouth owl, leaf insects, a wallaby and a naughty echidna who kept trying to escape from her enclosure!

It was a wonderful experience and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it!

Seymour Historical Society

Last Friday all MP students walked along High St and continued along Emily St to discover some wonderful pearls of history about Seymour! We were joined by volunteers of

the Seymour Historical Society whose knowledge was certainly worth the walk and the sun!! We discovered that Seymour began in 1843 and that the old gaol was mainly used as remand cells until the Circuit Judge arrived once a month. If the accused was found guilty of their crime and sentenced, they were transported to Pentridge Prison in Melbourne to serve their time. We also learnt about the old Courthouse, the stables at the back of both the Prince of Wales Hotel and the Royal Hotel, the façade of the Laundromat, the bulding next door, with its magnificent iron doors, which was previously a bank. Thank you to Seymour Historical Society and the many parents who accompanied us on the walk.

A couple of reminders:

Hats & Uniform A reminder that students are now required to wear full summer uniform. If you are unsure of what the uniform consists of, please ask your classroom teacher.

As it is Term 4 and we are a Sun Smart School, it is a requirement that all students wear a hat whist outside. Hats are now required. The expected hat is a blue broad brimmed hat. Our policy of ‘No hat, No play’ means that students will be required to play under the verandahs during recess and lunch if

they do not have a hat. It is suggested that students leave their hats at school each day so they are not lost or forgotten. We appreciate your support in this matter

Junior Primary Swimming Junior Primary has commenced swimming every Thursday and Friday. Please ensure your child has their swimmers, towel and goggles. If your child wears board shorts, please ensure an additional pair of underwear is packed. Items clearly named will make it much easier if they are misplaced. The timetable is attached and parents are more than welcome to meet their child’s class at the stadium.

JPP Thursday 1,00pm - JPC Thursday 1.45pm

JPR Friday 11.15am - JPF Friday 12.00pm

If there are any fathers, grandfathers or others that may be able to assist with organising the students after their swimming lesson, we would appreciate hearing from you. A current ‘Working with Children’ Card is required to be provided to the Office prior to attending any event involving students.

Until next fortnight, continue to ACT JUSTLY, SHOW RESPECT and DO YOUR BEST. If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to see your classroom teacher or myself – you know I love visitors!

Our Positive Behaviour Goal For Our Final Term Is To “BE THE BEST OF ME”. To have a go and put our best effort into all our learning tasks, our relationships and how we treat people overall. To be respectful to our parents, families and teachers.

We would envisage witnessing a lot more thoughtfulness towards others and to show empathy towards others, especially as we lead into Christmas and how we can be of service to others and be ‘giving’. To be mindful of the Samaritans Purse and to ‘give’ generously by donating a small gift to be placed in a box by tomorrow if you haven’t had the chance already this week. Many thanks for your kindness

We would like to congratulate these students on their sporting achievements. Oliver Munro came 1st in shot put in his Athletics division and 2nd in discuss. He will be going on to represent St. Mary’s at State level in Melbourne …stay tuned for updates.

Cayleb Trodd received a silver medal for coming 2nd in High Jump and was State champion for Athletics in Secondary division. What a great effort boys, well done

We also congratulate everyone across the College participating in the Musical Production Seusical. We have quite a few of our middle years involved and enjoying the great experience, giving them confidence and courage to put themselves out there and perform in front of an audience. Opening night was a huge success and we wish them the very best in the remaining two nights. Please come along and buy your tickets at the door.

Senior Primary will conclude their Term 3 Science Inquiry investigations this week. They have their presentations ready to go and will share their learning with their peers either via a poster or slide show, along with some props. They have worked really well to find out about our Earth and Solar System.

Father Ashkar came and visited our Year 7’s last week and blessed our Rosary Beads we had made as part of the unit on Prayer. As we know, October is the month of Mary and we come together each morning to pray the Hail Mary. Father’s visit was warmly welcomed by the students as he was quite informative and engaged them on many issues.

Summer Uniform. Overall, we are pleased to see most of our students wearing their school hats, but a reminder that we wear our hats this term, so please ensure your child has one each day, to safeguard against the sun as we are a SunSmart school.

We also require all our students to wear the correct summer uniform this term and sports uniform only on days they have sport.

Please feel free to contact any of us at any stage if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning and wellbeing. We look forward to our continued partnership to ensure we end 2018 with great success.

This term is always an exciting one for our year ten students, with exams on the horizon from the week of November 26th the count down has begun!

Karingal Visits Our year ten students conclude their weekly visits to Karingal this week with a shared morning tea and presentations of their Memory Scrapbooks and Life Story Frames they have made for their buddies. This has been a most rewarding experience for all involved and I would like to congratulate the students on the empathy and respect they have all shown towards their older buddies.

Year 10 Mentors Also our year tens celebrated their last informal morning tea with their Staff Mentors last week. These are always fun….with party pies and Tim Tams galore and the students are very grateful for the time and guidance their mentors have given them.

Year 9 Urban Camp There is much excitement building amongst the year nine students with their Urban Camp occurring from October 31st to November 2nd in Melbourne next week. The students will spend three days in Melbourne experiencing many varied and cultural activities.

Project Rocket On Wednesday October 17th our year 9 students participated in two “Project Rocket’ workshops called ‘Rally: New Ways to Tackle Bullying!’

Rather than dealing with labels of ‘bullies’ and ‘victims’ the PROJECT ROCKIT approach places an emphasis on the role that all of us can play in challenging bullying and prejudice instead of standing by watching.

The workshop is set up around highly energetic and interactive challenges that enable students to safely and anonymously reflect on past behaviour and empathise with those different experiences.

The second workshop was called: CONNECT: TACKLING (CYBER) BULLYING WITH EMPATHY!

This workshop addresses (cyber)bullying through a strengths-based framework of empathy, respect and the sense of community that young people crave online. As well as addressing the well-known risks of digital communications, the workshop utilises students' appreciation of current social networking sites and online youth culture to leverage the positive potential for all of us to challenge online hate instead of standing by watching.

This workshop navigates the risks rewards of challenging (cyber)bullying and presents a range of in-touch, realistic strategies for students to tackle online hate.

Congratulations to all students for your positive participation in this workshop!

SPIKE BALL! Our year nine students experienced a new game this week called ‘SPIKE BALL!’

It is a huge craze at the moment and Mrs Gilchrist managed to secure a few sets for our students to play. It’s a lot like Downball but with a difference and the students were totally engaged in showing off their skills.

‘Seussical’ Congratulations to all those students who are participating in our college production this week….it has been lots of hard work for all involved and we all can’t wait to see you in action….’Break a leg’ so to speak!!!!

Homework Club I encourage all students to make the most of Homework Club this term which is held every day at lunchtimes in the library. Maths tutoring is also available every Wednesday and Thursday after school from 3.30 – 4.30 pm in the library as well. A great opportunity to get on top of your workload and finish off the school year in a positive and rewarding way.

Please feel free to contact your child’s homeroom teacher or level coordinator if you have any concerns or queries regarding your child’s wellbeing/education.
