PRINCIPAL’S NOTES Regional Athletics Success Congratulations to our Primary students who competed at North West Athletics last week. They represented our school and Zone with pride and distinction! Harry Tobin, Nicholas Sweeney, William Duce and Ashton Harvey performed exceptionally well in the Junior Boys Relay, Alexander Yeo in the Junior High Jump and Victoria Monk in the 11yrs girls 200m. Bailey Thompson was selected to compete at the Para Athlete State Carnival in Homebush in October. He will compete in 100m, 200m, Shotput, Discus and Long Jump. We wish him well as he continues training (see Athletes Profile). Mandy Eyles is at present, with the support of the school working to fundraise to help fund the costs of travelling and accommodation. What great community spirit! 7/8 Touch Our Years 7&8 Girls and Boys Touch teams competed in the All School’s Touch Trials in Dubbo last week. The girls played Wellington High twice as well as Parkes Christian School and one other school. Kiera Turnbull scored a try. The boys played Mudgee High, South Dubbo, St Mary’s and Bathurst High. Try scorers were Jacob Howarth, Jesse Dennis, Connor Tincknell, Tom Yeo, Carter Swan and Brian Hellyer. Links to learning Our RSA and RCG courses run last week were very successful, with students gaining valuable credentials for their resumes and portfolios. On Wednesday, we have “Project Rockit” working with Years 5&6 and 7&8 targeting bullying and resilience training. These will be two hour sessions for each group. Duke of Ed Liam Haron, Jacob Howarth, Lachlan McKechnie, Thomas Yeo, Connor Tincknell, Caitlin Houghton and Jaike Mitchell are currently taking part in a two day orienteering walk, camping overnight. Mr Neal is the Duke of Edinburgh co-ordinator. We hope the weather holds out! Roald Dahl Tomorrow is Roald Dahl day and students have been encouraged to dress as their favourite Roald Dahl character. This is the culmination of the library units on Literacy this term. Mrs Davis and Mrs Archer have been working on this event. There are prizes for the best dressed, colouring in competitions, as well as Roald Dahl activities in the Library. Spelling Bee This Wednesday our finalists in the Spelling Bee competition will be competing in the Regional Spelling Bee. The finalists are Ezra Geesu, Kaitlyn Quick, Harry Tobin and Jaxson Mitchell. We wish them the best of luck and congratulations to all students who participated in this competition. Infants Tabloid Day Thirty-three of our Infants head to Coolah for the Infants Tabloid Day with neighbouring schools. This is a wonderful social and sporting opportunity for our students. The supervising teachers are Mrs Elith and Miss Kenny, as Mrs Peter will be relieving Principal on the day in my absence.

Kindergarten/Year One Class News The students are looking forward to attending the Infants Tabloid Sports Day at Coolah Central School this Friday 16th September. All students need to bring a packed recess and lunch with at least two drinks each as we have been informed that there will be no canteen facilities available on that day! Students will also require a hat as we will be out in the sun for the majority of the day.

Thank you to all parents who were able to attend the Kindergarten Information afternoon last Wednesday and to those who sent in apologies. Parents who were unable to attend can receive an information package by contacting the School Office.

The orientation sessions for the new Kindergarten students will commence in early Term 4. Dates are in the information package and also in the Mendooran Pride.

The students have enjoyed bringing in “Light and Sound” items from home to show.

Years 1/2 Class News Years 1/2 Class News Years 1/2 Class News

We had a busy week in class with the Paralympics starting. Students had the opportunity to see a small part of

a wheelchair basketball game, and some athletics events. We did some more work on Rio in class where we

learnt about carnival and celebrations. Students are excited for the Roald Dahl dress up day tomorrow here at

school and have been talking about some of their favourite characters in class. We have had more clothing

turning up on the veranda outside our room (jumpers, new tracksuit pants, hats and water bottles). Please

make sure your child’s name is on their belongings so they can be easily returned. Friday is the Infants

Tabloid Day in Coolah, and parents are reminded that there is no canteen on this day. Students will need to

bring a packed morning tea and lunch as well as plenty of water for the day. We will be away from school for

the entire day so students will need their school bags packed with their food and drink.

Regional Spelling Bee This week we have four students attending the Primary Premier’s Spelling Bee Challenge.

We wish Harry Tobin Jaxson Mitchell, Ezra Geesu and Kaitlin Quick all the best. This will be

on Wednesday 14th September at Dubbo West Public School.

Years 5/6 Class News PROJECTS!!!!

Welcome to Week 9 and the delivery of our student projects. I am looking forward to seeing what our students will deliver this week as they have had around eight weeks to prepare their presentations. If the students have been presenting their weekly class talks on athletes then they should feel more than confident to stand in front of the class and present their projects. Our talks will commence today and will continue through the week.

Now the Olympics have finished our learning has now shifted onto Brazil and South America with both a cultural and geographical focus. We have begun by looking at the Amazon Rainforest, its structure and some of its animal and indigenous inhabitants.

Some of our senior girls went on the Touch Football Day last week, with the Secondary girls and had a great day. From all reports they tried their very best and represented our school with pride. Congratulations Ainsleigh, Victoria and Kiera (scoring the only try on the day!) on your efforts.

There is a lot of illness going through the region at present so if it is possible please keep your children home if they are unwell so we can try and put a stop to this bout of viruses hitting us all at the moment. Something as simple as regularly using hand sanitiser, which we are remembering to use in class each day, can go a long way to killing off the germs and bacteria being spread through physical contact.

Bring on Project Week!!!!

7/8 Touch Football Day On Tuesday 6th September nineteen of our students travelled to Dubbo for the All Schools 7/8 Touch Football

Competition. We had three of our amazing Years 5/6 girls join us in order to get enough players for a Girls team.

Both our Girls and Boys teams played very well and came up against some very good teams such as Red Bend

Catholic College. All of our students conducted themselves very well and should be very proud of their efforts.

Our girls team should be especially proud of themselves as this was the first time they had ever played in a

competition like this. It was great to see them getting in and giving their best effort on the day, especially our

younger members of the team, Ainsleigh, Victoria and Kiera. Great work girls we are all very proud of you! Our

Boys team played extremely well and should be very proud of themselves, there was only a couple of tries

difference in each game and the score line did not reflect the level of effort they were putting in. A huge thank

you to all of our parents who provided transport on the day, without them the day wouldn’t have been possible.

We are so lucky at Mendooran Central School to have such amazing and supportive parents in our school

community.

FACEBOOK? FRIEND OR FOE?

Facebook is a funny thing. On the one hand it is this amazing resource-a

place to stay connected, keep up with what's happening in the world, a

place to be encouraged and get new ideas, and to find out what's going

on.

Of course, on the flip side, it can be a really painful place too, a place of

comparison and insecurity, a place of snarkiness and cyber-bullying, a

place where people dare to say things they would never say to your

face, and a place where people try very hard to present the image of

perfection when their reality is anything but.

This week, be nice people! Use your cyber-speak to build up your friends, not knock them down. Remember

that you are Mendooran Central School students and are proud of it!!!

After School Study Session To allow our students to perform to their potential, Mendooran Central School has decided to implement an afternoon study session at the school. This time is designed to allow students access to their teachers to help them with any homework, assessment tasks and assignments that they may be having issues with, as a revision session, or to seek assistance with any work they may be experiencing problems comprehending.

These sessions will take place after school for 90 minutes straight after the finish of the school day. There will be at least one teacher in attendance and they will occur in the school computer lab to allow all the students access to the internet should their work require it.

In the introductory stage of this program these sessions will be offered to the Secondary students to begin with, and if successful hopefully a Primary afternoon will be established.

In order to maximise the number of students who are able to take advantage of these sessions we are asking any interested parents and students to supply us with the best day to run the program. To that end we would ask any interested students and parents to fill in the form below and return to the school so we can begin these afternoons in Term 4. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Please detach and return to the school

Dear Parents/Guardian

At the last School Council meeting Mendooran Central School sporting area was discussed. At present Mendooran Central

School is affiliated with the North West Region for all our sporting events. This includes any representation with swimming,

cross country, athletics and individual sports. I, as the Sports Organiser of the School, am proposing to change our region from

North West to Western. I have compared the two regions in a table below and believe changing to Western would be

beneficial for our School, enabling more students the best chance in attending all levels.

Mendooran Central School will still be involved in Binnaway 4 Way Sports and Infants Tabloid with the local towns and I would

like to see Secondary become more involved in social competitions within in our local area.

Yours Sincerely

Kristal Norwood

Sports Coordinator
