PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to Term 4 to all returning families and a special welcome to those families joining the Mosman Public

School community. As always, Term 4 is a busy and exciting time – particularly for our Year 6 students who are in the

build-up to celebrating the end of their primary school years. I take this opportunity to welcome Ms Kerry McConaghy to

our school in her role of Relieving Deputy Principal whilst Mr Cobcroft is on leave.

Our PBL Mural was installed in the Myahgah playground during the holidays. Many thanks to Year 6 who have donated

this as their gift to the school this year. A local graffiti artist developed the design from ideas of year 6 students.

Congratulations to our Taronga Zoo parade students.

Taronga Zoo’s 100 Year Birthday Parade Last Saturday night, October 15, 29 students and 2 teachers from Mosman Public School laced up their dancing shoes and set off to be a part of an amazing night of song, dance and fun. More than 15,000 people from across NSW came to watch as 10 giant light sculptures made their way down Macquarie Street to the Sydney Opera House, joined by nearly 1,000 school students, Taronga staff and volunteers. Each gigantic animal lantern was followed by 50 dancing students in matching onesies. They were followed by 15 smaller lanterns held by students. Teachers and zoo staff and volunteers followed each group creating a parade that filled Macquarie Street and then moved on to the Opera House steps for a finale that will be remembered by all involved for a very long time. The animals represented in the parade were chosen since they are critically endangered in either Australia, or our close neighbour Sumatra. Taronga Zoo is asking that people donate to the support of these animals at www.taronga.org.au/standupforthewild

What’s happening?

STUDENT HAPPENINGS

The World’s Greatest Shave – Hairdressers needed with cape and clippers!!

A number of students will be taking part in this year’s Greatest

Shave to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. The event

will culminate on Wednesday November 23 at 12.00pm. Students

will attend a K-6 Assembly for the event. As there are a number

of students involved we need the support of a few hairdressers

with clippers. If you can assist in this way we would be most

grateful.

Please support this most worthy cause also by participating in

the school fundraising efforts with the SRC.

Debating Friendlies On Monday October 17, Mosman Public School sent out one of the two

Senior Debating teams to have a 'friendly' debate with Neutral Bay PS.

The team members included: Angus C, Emilia D, Kristin B and Paris O.

The topic was: Students should only be allowed 30 minutes of screen

time after each school day. As it was a friendly debate there was no

winner, however, the students received constructive feedback from the

teachers on how to improve for next time.

The MPS affirmative side had some strong points that were hard to rebut

and the Neutral Bay team weren't going to give up easily.

Congratulations MPS Team 2 and bring on our next debates!

MPS Team 1 v Neutral Bay PS - Monday October 24

MPS Team 2 v Cammeray PS - Monday November 7

BOOK PARADE AND STEWART HOUSE REMINDER 2016

Our Book Parade is taking place at 9.20 AM on THURSDAY OCTOBER 27. On this day students are asked to dress up as a character from a book. They need to know the name of their character and, for the older grades, to what book the character belongs. As part of our day we will be supporting a wonderful organisation, ‘STEWART HOUSE’ at North Curl Curl, that bring disadvantaged students from remote areas of NSW to the city for doctor and dental check-ups. Many of the children have not ever been to a beach or had a holiday away from home. Students are asked to bring a gold coin for the dress up parade. Please note that this is not a mufti day and if your child does not want to take part, he or she should wear his or her school uniform. Parents are most welcome to come and watch this event. Why don’t you take the opportunity to drop into the Book Fair before or after the parade? On Thursday October 27, the Book Fair will be open from 8.30am to 9.20am and then 10.20am to 11.00am. Please note, it will be closed during the Book Parade. Gabi Hodge Teacher Librarian

Author Talk

On Wednesday before the holidays, my mum came into the library and read part of the book she has been writing. The book is called Billy and the Rainbow Dragon. She showed us the pictures of Billy which she drew on her Ipad. The kids in the class enjoyed listening to the book. Lucian S - 1/2E

CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS Schools Spectacular The Schools Spectacular choir will be starting to rehearse their singing during lunch and afternoon tea on Wednesdays and Thursdays with Ms Cady and Ms Higman. Every family should have received the Edmodo code to assist them in accessing the music and keeping open lines of communication. This year’s Schools Spectacular is at Sydney Olympic Park for the first time so all the staff, teachers and students are looking forward to being a part of a whole new show. You may still be able to buy tickets to take your family to see this and I would highly recommend it. There are four shows open to the public, both matinee and evening on Friday, November 25 and Saturday, November 26. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketek.

Instrumental Program News The band and string programs for 2017 are looking bigger and better than ever. All year 1 and year 2 students have been learning recorder with Ms Cady in order to understand notation and fingering. Students in year 1 are old enough to start learning violin or cello next year and many have taken up this opportunity. Students in year 2 are invited to join our beginning concert band programs. Many of these students have already started lessons so as to be prepared for the ensemble rehearsals starting term 1 of next year. Band camp will also be high on everybody’s mind in term 1 with many students attending for the first time. We have a wonderful parent body at this school and I am pleased to hear of the many volunteers who are even more excited about attending camp than their children are. It will be so much fun! For further information about enrolling your child in our band or string programs, please contact the program manager, Cherelle Martin at [email protected]
