All of us will live longer and more happily if we stop trying to arrange other peoples’ lives. Jesus challenged us not to judge but to live with the tension and let God and history make the judgments. So we need to live by own convictions and let others do the same. Be giving of yourself to others. Happiness lies in giving ourselves away. We need to be open and generous because if we with- draw into ourselves we run the risk of becoming self-centred and no happiness will be found there since “stagnant water becomes putrid.” Stop being negative. Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. Negative thoughts feed unhappi- ness and a bad self-image. Positive thoughts feed happiness and healthy self-esteem. Don’t proselyte, respect others’ beliefs. What we cherish and put our faith into grows “by attraction, not by proselytizing.” Beauty is the one thing that no one can argue with. Cherish your values, but always act towards others with graciousness, charity, and respect. Work for peace. Peace is more than the absence of war and working for peace means more than not causing disharmony. Peace, like war, must be waged actively by working for justice, equality, and an ever- wider inclusivity in terms of what makes up our family. Waging peace is the perennial struggle to stretch hearts, our own and others, to accept that in God’s house there are many rooms and that all faiths, not least our own, are meant to be a house of prayer for all peoples. Head of Secondary 2017 On behalf of the Executive Director, the community of St Mary’s Catholic College, Kingaroy is pleased to announce the appointment of Mandy Sullivan to the position of Head of Secondary from the commencement of the 2017 school year. Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Saint Mary’s, In an interview for the Argentine weekly, Viva, Pope Francis submitted “Top 10 Tips” for bringing greater joy to one’s life. The following is a synthesis of his central points by Ron Rolheiser, OMI Ten Secrets to Happiness Live and let live.

We need to be open and generous because if we with-draw into ourselves we run the risk of becoming self-centred and no happiness will be found there since “stagnant water becomes putrid.” Stop being negative. Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. Negative thoughts feed unhappi-ness and a bad self-image. Peace, like war, must be waged actively by working for justice, equality, and an ever-wider inclusivity in terms of what makes up our family. Waging peace is the perennial struggle to stretch hearts, our own and others, to accept that in God’s house there are many rooms and that all faiths, not least our own, are meant to be a house of prayer for all peoples. Catholic Education Week, 24–30 July 2016 Dear Parents/Caregivers Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across Queensland from 24 - 30 July this year. This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day. The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Opening Doors in the Year of Mercy. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. During Catholic Education Week 2016, Catholic education communities across Queensland are invited to celebrate and share how they are opening doors for others. There are 300 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate around 147,000 students and employ 19,000 teachers and staff, and

Page 3: Term 3 - Week 2 2010... · “Top 10 Tips” for bringing greater joy to one’s life. The following is a synthesis of his central points by Ron Rolheiser, OMI Ten Secrets to Happiness

most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way. Here at Saint Mary’s, we are going to ask each homeroom class to commit to intentions each week that they will pray for using the Doors to Mercy themes; justice, treasure, forgiveness, wisdom, compassion, wholeness or unity, dialogue, peace and witness. Once the class chooses their theme, they develop prayer intentions as a class to suit the theme. Each member of the entire community is also invited to commit to an area or theme of Mercy that focuses them for the rest of the year. They have the opportunity to name that commitment in words and add it to our College Door of Mercy, located in the lower courtyard during Catholic Week. The initiative aims to highlight that every person, staff, students and families of the College have a role to play in Pope Francis’ call to mercy. Please come and make your own commitment by picking up a ‘door of intention’ from the front counter of the office. You can add it to the College Door yourself or the office staff will do it for you. We will also be holding a afternoon tea on Tuesday, 26th July for Parents’ Day. This will be located in the College Boardroom from 3.30pm. Come and enjoy a cuppa and some afternoon tea whilst waiting for your next parent teacher interview. I thank you for your ongoing support and look forward to seeing you during Catholic Education Week 2016. Kind regards Mr Martin Perrett APRE

Year 4, Year 4/5, Year 5 – Mondays Year 6A, Year 6B – Fridays 2016 Premier’s Reading Challenge Once again this year, I am delighted to help P-7 students participate in the 2016 Premier’s Reading Challenge. As well as being fun, the challenge aims to boost children’s literacy skills by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure and learning, develop their imagination and cultivate a passion for literature. Research shows that young people who read for pleasure excel in a range of learning activities. Reading widely will bring untold benefits throughout their lives. The reading period for the 2016 Premier's Reading Challenge at Saint Mary’s started in May and closes Friday 26th August. This year the Premier has challenged all state and non-state school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. ‘Experiencing’ books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. Students will have received a reading challenge record sheet and bookmark to help them keep track of the books they have read. Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. It will be my great pleasure to present these certificates to students in Term 4. For more information about Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit: http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge/ You can play a big part in your children’s future by encouraging them to be part of this challenge. Book Club Book Club catalogues went out this week. Money and orders are due no later than Monday, 25th July 2016. Yours in reading Mrs Melanie Burr Teacher Librarian

Year 7 to Year 10 Assessment Calendars Assessment calendars will be distributed to 7-10 students during homeroom on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Please don't hesitate to contact your child's homeroom teacher if you have not received one or require additional copies. Kind regards Mrs Angelique Arden Year 7 to Year 10 Teaching and Learning Leader

I have had a fabulous first week here at Saint Mary’s meeting some of the students and joining them in different classes and events such as Meals on Wheels, Community Night and a Choir trip to Brisbane. I have witnessed charity through the students and solidarity in these events. There are several opportunities coming up for students. Orana visit is on this Thursday 3pm to 4pm for those involved. Youth Group will begin in a few weeks time. This will take place after school at St Mary’s Church from 3.30pm – 6pm for students from Year 7 to 12. QISSN News During the first week of the school holidays, 11 Saint Mary’s students and teachers went on an exciting trip to Rockhampton to compete at the Queensland Independent Secondary School Netball (QISSN) competition. Each match was a hard fought battle, and our young team held up strong against the much older students from much bigger city schools! We woke to a tropical negative 3 degrees that morning, and played tetris with our belongings in the back of the van with frozen hands (thanks for your help Dads). Despite the cold, all of the girls were in high spirits, singing, laughing, dancing and taking ‘selfies’ throughout the drive. We first played St Joseph’s in Stanthorpe, which was a narrow loss by 5 goals. We became great friends with this team, and there are talks of getting

Page 6: Term 3 - Week 2 2010... · “Top 10 Tips” for bringing greater joy to one’s life. The following is a synthesis of his central points by Ron Rolheiser, OMI Ten Secrets to Happiness

together next year for joint training sessions. Despite not winning any games, we had several comments from different coaches and umpires about our girls and their wonderful, positive attitude and approach to the competition. We were very humbled and proud when we were given these compliments and it is a credit to our girls and the way they hold themselves in the wider community. We had a wonderful and exhausting week, exploring (getting slightly lost) the sights of Rockhampton and Yeppoon. We would love to acknowledge the wonderful parent support we had prior to, and during the week of QISSN. Without your endless support, the girls would not be able to be a part of this wonderful experience. Thank you to our Saint Mary’s community, who without you and your support, we would not have raised enough funds to make this whole trip possible. Thank you to the amazing teachers; giving up a week of your holidays after reports, athletics carnival and an eleven week term was not easy! Thank you for your endless support and giving these girls an experience they won’t ever forget. And lastly, thank you to our fantastic girls. You make it worth it! Thank you for being so well behaved, fun, enthusiastic and positive in defeat. Congratulations to Georgia Reeve who was voted as the Most Valuable Player for our team throughout the 2016 competition. This is a great effort from Georgia and she will be awarded at the next whole school assembly. Next year’s QISSN competition is being held in Brisbane again, hosted by Mount Alvernia College in Kedron. We look forward to seeing you all next year for another tough and exciting competition! Touch Football sign up for 8 to 12 year olds at the Kingaroy football fields on Monday,25th July from 5pm to 6pm. Please be advised that there will be no Active After School Sports this term. Unfortunately the program for the funding has been reduced by the government to 3 terms per year. We will be eligible to re-apply for funding in Term 4.

A great way to help with driving safety is with the Jason Rich Foundation’s subsidy for School Driver Training. It was through the Defensive Driving Course last week-end at the Willow Bank Raceway, that Yr. 12 student Joshua Garlick gained his certificate of defensive driving. Students were lucky enough to get some wet weather to practice their skills. The format of the day was a mix of theory and practical sessions. Remember this statistic: If you are in a car with a driver under 25 and have 3 passengers, the chances of you having a car crash go up by 400%. Practical sessions included: First session was about setting up your car seat correctly. Your seat belt should be across the

hips and the collar bone as these places are the strongest parts of your body. You should always wear your seatbelt tight to prevent going forward in the event of a crash.

A slightly bent knee is the correct distance away from the pedals. The steering wheel should sit at your wrist when your arm is straight from your body. Mirrors should be positioned well and used a lot while you are driving! Students then got the chance to experience braking in a straight line. There were four cars the

students got to choose from ranging from a hot sports car to an old Excel with no ABS brakes. It was great to feel the difference between the ABS braking system and a car without ABS brakes. It was also interesting to see how much longer it takes to stop a bigger car than a small car.

Remember the rule: If it takes you 10 meters to stop completely from travelling at 50km an hour – every time you double the speed you to need to quadruple the stopping distance. It takes a lot longer to stop when you’re travelling 100km an hour.

Page 7: Term 3 - Week 2 2010... · “Top 10 Tips” for bringing greater joy to one’s life. The following is a synthesis of his central points by Ron Rolheiser, OMI Ten Secrets to Happiness

Second session was a great driving exercise that worked on the student’s peripheral vision. It included an exercise on steering using the push/pull method as the safest method. That way your arms are not in the way if

the airbag is activated. Students were taught to always be looking ahead and focusing on where they are going The best indicator of a upcoming hazard is to look for brake lights. If everyone in front of you has their brake lights on, then

you need to be alert for a hazard or change in conditions. Third session was a chance for the students to test out their braking skills again. This time they were taught when is it safe to

swerve. A cut out of a kangaroo was the victim and students had to drive towards it and turn at the last minute. This was a great exercise to practice using the ABS brakes and testing the limits of the cars. Remember the safest place to hit something (if its unavoidable) it the

centre front of the car. Another course will run in the middle of Term 4. http://www.sdt.com.au/safe-driving-programs-school.html Safe Driving Mr Paul Fomiatti Year 10 to Year 12 Student Wellbeing Leader

Year 10 Dance Class Last Friday the year 10 dance students had the opportunity to experience the Monkey Baa performance of The Peasant Prince. The Peasant Prince is a new stage adaptation of the book Mao's last Dancer by Li Cunxin. This experience was invaluable for students, as it enabled them to gain an understanding of performance styles, as well as expanding their repertoire of dance styles and appreciation skills. Yours in Dance Mrs Angelique Arden Year 10 Dance Teacher

These can be dropped into the Tuckshop on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or to the College Office. Ordering and Payment We now have two options for ordering, online and the paper bag system. For Prep to Year 5 students it is recommended that you use either of these systems. Online Ordering System QKR (Quicker): Your child’s online order will be sent to the tuckshop, where it will be printed out. The or-ders are filled and placed in the class baskets. Their baskets are collected at morning tea and lunch. You are not required to send in a paper bag once you have ordered online. Paper Bag System: Your child's order will be placed in the tuckshop baskets in their classroom in the mornings. The baskets are delivered to the tuckshop and orders are filled. Their baskets are collected at morning tea and lunch. Please do not use sticky tape or staples when using paper bags for ordering. It makes it difficult to get the bags undone without tearing. Plastic bags are not suitable for ordering, it is very difficult to place your child's order inside them. Bags can be purchased from the tuckshop for .05c each. Year 6 to Year 12 students are more than welcome to use either system. If using the paper bag system, students place their bag orders at the tuckshop before school. Do you know….. That we sell Sandwiches! Our Sandwiches are made fresh to order, with your choice of fillings. They include ham, chicken, cheese or vegemite or salad. This is available to order for second break only. Have great week! Mrs Michelle Davis Tuckshop Convenor

In Year 4/5 we are a dynamic group of students who engage in learning activities with enthusiasm. We face challenges using a Growth Mindset and enjoy a number of different learning approaches, thinking strategies, and goal-setting.
