It has really given me a more in-depth idea of what career I want to enter. Much appreciated, it was a really inspiring day!

It was extremely interesting and I learnt a whole lot about the courses I am possibly going to do at Uni.

A good day to find out more about what I want to do. Great atmosphere and beautiful campus.

Finally thank you to the students who conducted themselves beautifully on the day and were great ambassadors for the College.

My RAAF Experience by Nikki Granger Between the 26th - 29th of August I attended the RAAF Flight and Engineering camp at Edinburgh Military Base. Over the period of the camp I had the opportunity of a lifetime to use weapon simulations, a P-3 Orion simulation, to fly in a real life P-3 Orion, talk to many pilots and engineers within the Air Force and to meet 14 other girls my age with the same passions and interests. The aim of this Flight camp was to educate and inspire young women into the Defence Force and to give them an insight into the life and job description of women in defence. Throughout Flight camp the 14 girls along with myself, were taught about many Air Force jobs, Air Force values and how we can apply for a career as engineers or in my case, a pilot. Over the 4 day camp we were all required to wear uniforms including the full camouflage outfit, flight suits and gym clothes for the many physical components.

On day one, we arrived at Edinburgh at 7.45 am and began our camp by firstly unpacking our bags into our rooms. After this we attended lunch at the Officers mess and continued on to leadership activities and UAV challenges. Shortly after we ended the day by using weapon simulations which was definitely interesting for those who can’t shoot such as myself. Day 2 commenced with an early start of being fully dressed and ready by 6.30am. Breakfast was first on the menu followed by a PT session consisting of the beep test, a military course, and many push ups and sit ups! After this we then had the chance to use a P-3 Orion simulation, which was definitely a highlight of the camp, being able to practise flying and learning new skills. Following this we then toured around the AVMED where we got to try on safety suits and view real life apparatus that take away different senses that change your perception of your surroundings. The day then ended with continuing our UAV challenge which was having to build something in order to carry an object and get it somewhere else using a remote control helicopter. My favourite day, day 3, began with the UAV tournament which my team unfortunately didn’t win, but came close second! After lunch was our flight in the real-life P-3 Orion, a grand aircraft used for search and rescue missions which gave me the best experience of my life. In the P-3 Orion we had access to using the radars and flying only 100m above the water, flying over ships and circling around yachts. This part of the camp made me realise how much I really wanted to become a pilot. On day 4, the last day, we attended an interactive session with a pilot from the Air Force and got the opportunity to ask questions about being a pilot. After this we returned our main uniforms and packed our bags ready for departure, the worst part of the camp!

Overall, this opportunity has definitely inspired me to pursue a career with the Air Force, in particular as a pilot. Flight camp has given me many experiences that I will remember forever and has motivated me to inspire other women into a defence career.

Frequently Asked Questions How long can I use my ATAR for? Students can use their ATAR to gain entry into a university program, as long as they haven’t studied for more than two years (full-time) at university.

Once a student has completed more than two years of study at university level, their grades from these studies (grade point average or GPA) are considered to be more relevant.

If a student hasn’t studied at university their ATAR never expires.

How long do I need to study before I can apply to transfer into another program? Students need to study at least four courses to receive a GPA, which they may use to apply to transfer into another program. This equates to one full-time semester (six months).

Growth in Allied Health (Taken from The Advertiser Careerone, Saturday 30th August, 2014)

Growing numbers of allied health professionals are being called on to manage the aches, pains and blood sugar levels of a nation, preserving Australians well into their 80’s.

The allied health services industry expects to create 43,000 new jobs in the next five years to support a shift in Australia’s population dynamic, with dietitians, medical imaging professionals, dentists and physiotherapists leading the job surge.

More than one in five Australians will be aged over 60 by 2020. By 2035, the minimum retirement age will be lifted to 70, which was the average life expectancy of Australians in the 1960’s.

It means more people need assistance to live healthier lives, whether it be through better mobility or preventing health issues before they arise.
