Dear Parents, Caregivers and Children, Just recently, a parent (who is also a teacher) remarked that Term 3 is “the quiet Term.” It is fair to say it has been anything but quiet. Continuing the science inquiry theme, the Year 1’s last week participated in an incursion (see photos) with a focus on materials and how they change. The children discovered that some things need to be present to make materials change and that not all materials change depending on their make-up. I must admit, playing with green slime is not my idea of fun. Over the page some Year 1s have written reflections of their experience. Most parents will notice that the laying of turf has been completed. As you may have guessed (or I may have pointed out), it has been one of my most joyful experiences. Nonetheless, it is done and it looks great and we can look forward to further improvement in and around the drop off area…Stay tuned! Thanks to all in our community for your cooperation, patience and for exercising common sense.

I loved making a plastic shape with gelatine, water and green food dye! Isla Quick 1S I liked sorting objects that belonged together. There were different gloves that were made out of differ-ent materials and could be used for different things. Patrick 1S I liked the science incursion especially when we made the green plastic shapes out of food dye, water and gelatine. Mila Pickett 1S In our science incursion we learnt lots of things. We made the salt water evaporate and change into fresh water. Thomas Barlow 1S I liked making the green plastic shape. Some were clear and some had bubbles in them! Alexandra Kelly 1S We tried to make garden cups out of recycled newspaper without using any sticky tape or staples. It was very tricky but lots of fun! Maxx Hoffmann 1S I loved putting magnets on different containers and watching things move. Jayda Delia 1S

Foundation Show and Tell Last week, Foundation children were asked to bring to school their favourite sporting item for Show and Tell. Alessio Pianta in Foundation R brought his cousin Jayden Laverde and his friend Damian Cavka to school to talk to the class about what it is like to be an AFL player. Jayden wears the number 33 jumper and debuted this year for Essendon and Damian plays number 19 for the West Coast Eagles. The children were very excited to meet Jayden and Damian and were even given some top tips for being a star footy player, such as eating all their fruit and vegetables to grow big and strong!

Photos from St Monica’s vs St Vincent’s Due to problems with our internet today we aren’t able to provide you with any details of the football match.

Saturday 17th October Term 4

Commences Monday 5th

End of Term 3 After a very busy Term 3, we will all be looking forward to a restful break. Term 4 will commence on Monday October 5. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday. God bless

Michael Di Nuzzo Acting Principal

As Term 3 draws to a close, week 10 has still been choc-full of events. Not the least being the Pizza Special food day. It was very popular for both students and teachers and we are very grateful to all those involved in the organisation of the event. Having children dressed in their favourite team colours certainly added to the atmosphere. Special Food day report A big thank you to the Montalto Family (Pizza Hut Flemington) for suppling the massive amount of pizzas for our special food day! They did an amazing job and you can see how much effort went into it by the amount of empty pizza boxes in our recycling bin!!! To all the wonderful mums that came along to help hand out pizzas and cut up the hundreds of oranges, many many thanks!!! The generous donation of oranges by the McKay family from Finer Fruit South Yarra, if you’re in the area make sure you pop in and say hello. Also to Fresh on Young Moonee Ponds and Happy Apple Greengrocers Ascot Vale their support was much appreciated. It was a great day for all involved. Lisa Miller – Parents’Association

Updated lunch menu and Online ordering QkR is coming! St Monica’s is proud to announce the introduction of our online tuck shop orders from Term 4. The QkR app can be downloaded onto your mobile phone (Android or I-phone). The school has taken on the initiative to bear the cost of implementation and ongoing access to the software. Changes have also been made to the existing menu with the introduction of fresh sandwiches and rolls and a few additional snack items and fruit. Further work on the menu to include more healthier options will continue. Our tuck shop prices have remained unchanged for the last 4 years therefore some prices will change from next term to reflect CPI increases. These prices as still extremely competitive and in keeping with most schools within our municipality who may offer the service. The aim is not for the tuckshop to make a profit or raise additional funds, but to simply pay for itself. Parents can start ordering from the start of week 2 next term (Term 4). Attached to the newsletter are instructions to download the app and an updated menu.

St Monica's NetSetGo Every Saturday morning throughout Term 3 a group of about 45 St Monica's girls has gathered in the senior yard to learn some fundamen-tal netball skills and have some fun. This Saturday St Monica's NetSet-Go comes to an end and we will celebrate our successful season with a special session where the girls will be presented with their participation medals and we'll have a BBQ. I would like to thank all the girls for their commitment and enthusiasm, their parents who bought them along and helped out each week, their dads (and grandfathers!) for participating with such grace and gusto on Father’s Day weekend and Nigel Haynes from Bakers Delight Milleara Mall for supplying us with treats and bread. Extra special thanks must go to our sensational coaching team of Ele Storace, Kathi Quick and Mia Lucas. All three were new to their roles this year and have done an absolutely fantastic job. Keep up the practice girls and we'll do it all again next year! Ange Horton
