Friday June 19 is our Mufti Day -for Michelago Further dates will be posted once school resumes full time.

The next newsletter will be disseminated on Monday 15 June. There will be no newsletter next week, on Monday 8 June, due to the Queen’s birthday long weekend.

A Heartfelt Thank You

After our first week back at school full time, I am very grateful to our parent community for your wonderful support. Together, we have navigated the many changes the COVID-19 restrictions have placed on us, as a school and as families.

While there is certainly some welcome normality in having the children back with us full time, there is also the new normal, or probably the more accurate, the ‘temporary normal’, with continued restrictions on our regular practices.

I cannot thank you enough for your understanding as we prevent parents on site, as we postpone or cancel many regular events and as we continue with the many additional hygiene practices.

Term 2 Week 6 1 June 2020

National Reconciliation Week

This week we have been celebrating National Reconciliation Week. This special week in the school calendar provides an opportunity to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and helps us to consider how we can contribute to reconciliation.

Reconciliation Week is held between 27 May and 3 June each year, as both of the dates are significant. The 27 May is the anniversary of the 1967 referendum, which led to Aboriginal people being included in

census counts and enabled laws to be made with respect to Aborigines as a race. The 3 June is significant because it marks the anniversary of the High Court’s judgement on the Mabo case, which recognised Aboriginal land rights.

This year’s theme, In this Together, is particularly relevant, given our experiences with COVID-19 restrictions. It reminds us that when we work together, we can achieve so much.

5A explored some dancing and traditional foods last week and today are exploring dot painting on drawings of their hands to represent inclusion and acknowledgement of our traditional custodians.

Kiss and Drop This is a reminder to please ensure student safety is a priority when using the kiss and drop areas outside our school. If there are no available spaces at the kiss and drop, please drive around the block. If your child has not arrived at the kiss and drop by the time you arrive, please drive around the block, so that other parents can pick up their children. The maximum amount of time you can remain in this space is two minutes. The council rangers do attend the school in the afternoons and will book cars who stay in the spaces and block the road. SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY Last term we notified you that our school development day had changed to Monday 17 August. However, since the presenter is unable to leave the United States due to COVID-19, we will hold our school development day on the usual date, Monday 20 July. This is the first day of Term 3. Please ensure students stay at home on this date or are booked in to OOSH. Mrs Leonie Black Principal

Term 2 Week 6 1 June 2020

‘Mufti for Michelago’ When Term 1 commenced this year, much of NSW was in crisis due to bushfires that ravaged communities. Indeed, sadly, some families suffered loss of life and property. Schools were closed, as bushfires threatened or destroyed buildings. We gave thanks that our school community remained safe. In Term 1, the NSW Primary Principals’ Association began organising an initiative, where schools not impacted by bushfires, could lend their support to other schools. At that time, we ‘raised our hand’ to help. John Purchase PS was buddied with Michelago Public School. Sadly, shortly afterwards, the Covid pandemic then interfered with our philanthropic plans.

As we return to a new ‘normal’ and try to re-establish lives, hopes and dreams, it may be a good time to think about something other than Covid-19. So, planning for a mufti (out-of-uniform) day for Michelago PS has begun. Michelago Public School is an integral part of the small village community of Michelago, situated 50 kilometres south of Canberra. It has 38 students. School principal, Claire Plummer, has conveyed these reflections to me:

Michelago families did not suffer as much from properties and homes destroyed due to the fires, although some properties had outlying infrastructure, such as fences and out-buildings damaged. The impact (of the bushfires) was strongest from the point of view of mental health and wellbeing; the trauma caused by such uncertainty and the gravity of the situation, with many families having to evacuate during this time.

The Michelago community has suggested to us, that building a “lovely little garden area” would be a calming, peaceful project - something of beauty out of the chaos. We would like to support them in this project. Let’s help Michelago Public School build a rose garden, by holding a mufti (out-of-uniform) day for John Purchase PS students, on Friday 19th June. All gold coin donations will be donated to this initiative. Michelago Public School is pictured in these two images below.

Bicycle Safety

The safety of our students is paramount. This is why students who want to bring a bicycle (or scooter) to school, must do so with the permission of their parents and the school. Only students in Years 3 to 6, will be considered. In the first instance, an application form must be obtained from the front office and completed by parents, after discussing all aspects of safety with their son or daughter. The application process must be done annually. Students who have not submitted a signed form, do not have permission to ride to and from our school.

Brush Turkeys Our resident brush turkeys are enjoying their environment!

How to Access Your Child’s School Report Online Your child’s school report will be available online, at the end of this term, via the John Purchase Parent Portal (pictured below). Parents who have already registered in 2019, do not have to repeat the process.

Page 7: Term 2 Week 6 1 June 2020...Term 2 Week 6 1 June 2020 9875 3100 johnpurch-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au Friday June 19 is our Mufti Day -for Michelago Further dates will be posted once school

Term 2 Week 6 1 June 2020

To access the portal and your child’s report, it is vital for all parents to have an email address registered with our school. If not, please contact the school office via email, on [email protected] with your current email address details, as soon as possible. There may be some family circumstances in which both parents may require separate access to the portal. This can be done if both email addresses are registered with the school. Once your email address is registered with the school, follow the instructions below to gain access:

1. Go to the Parent Portal via the link below:

https://www.impromation.com.au/portal4parents?schid=4572

(You may need to copy and paste this link into your browser.)

2. Click on the ‘Don’t have a password? Get Registered’ link at the bottom of the portal sign-in page, then enter your email address.

3. Parents with no current portal account or incomplete portal accounts will receive a ‘Getting Started’ email which will guide them through the registration process.

During the registration process, parents will receive one email from the ‘Impromation’ software company.

1. The email will have instructions and a default password to use initially. This will give access to the portal to allow you to set up your own password linked to your own email address.

2. Access the portal using your own email address as the ‘Username’ and your newly set-up password.

3. For parents who have previously accessed the portal but have forgotten a password, please click on the ‘Forgot My Password’ link, which will take you through a process to reset your password.

4. Please keep your password in a safe place for future reference, when accessing the portal. Do not share it with other parents.

The Parent Portal will securely store your child (or children’s) report/s, any relevant EAL/D reports and statistical grade distribution data for Years 1 to 6, each semester. Parents may then decide to download or print copies of their child’s reports at their own leisure. These prompts will assist the registration process: Step 1 – Access ‘Communication Notes and Forms’ from the JPPS website

This week’s expectation is:

Respect: Move quietly around the school while others are learning

Congratulations to the students who have demonstrated our school expectations of RESPECT,

RESPONSIBILITY or who have tried to ASPIRE.

Purchase Pride Badge (10 Purchase Prides)

When students receive ten Purchase Pride awards (pictured above), these should be left in Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the administration corridor. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class. Until further notice, Purchase Prides will be presented in classrooms, as no assemblies are being held. Badges earned over the past two months, will be handed out over the next fortnight. Congratulations to the following recipients: Thomas W (1C), Oscar Z (1M), Keira G (1C)

What do I do with my Class Awards?

When a student has received ten green/white class awards (pictured above), they should be handed in to Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the administration corridor. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached: 10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion 50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day! A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Accumulated Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, are being kept in my office until we can gather in larger groups. GOLD AWARD (30 CLASS AWARDS) Congratulations to: Mitchell W (4-O)

Talking about KINDNESS with our children helps develop their understanding of how their actions impact on the world around them.

Keeping it on the list of things discussed at home can be really helpful.

It’s good for parents to answer the same questions to model reflection for your children.

Have a regular family discussion

Once a week at the dinner table have a discussion about kindness. Here are some examples of questions:

1. Who was a bucket filler today? OR 2. What is a kind thing you did today for someone else? 3. What filled your bucket today? OR 4. What is something that made you happy today? 5. What is something you feel thankful for today? 6. Were you a bucket dipper today or did someone dip into your bucket

today?

Book

This is a book you might like to read with your child on the subject of kindness.
