This week in reading we will be learning to: * Read a passage about persuasive and informative texts and answer the comprehension questions from the text. Create a set of playing cards by writing your words onto rectangular shaped pieces of paper. Ensure you write each word onto at least 2 cards. With another person play snap or memory with your cards. Persuasive texts use emotive language (strong words) to appeal to people’s emotions. They include such language to persuade the reader to agree with the writer’s point of view. Read the poster of strong words (Literacy Worksheet 5) Use a dictionary (can be online) to find the meaning of any words you do not know. . Task 4 stencil included Underline 3 words from each list. 9. From your planning in Activity 5, write your persuasive text. Include a title, an opening statement which highlights your point of view and three arguments which back your point of view. Expand each argument with examples and evidence. Your concluding statement should sum up your ideas and once again remind the reader that your point of view is right. 10. Look up the definition (meaning) of each of your chosen spelling words. From Activity 2. You could use a dictionary or find the meaning online. Write both the word and its meaning neatly in your workbooks. Optional Online dictionary https://bit.ly/2LqHvmx

11. Make sure today is a day that you read for at least 25 minutes. Complete your Reading Gems booklet. Remember to post your Reading Gems sheet when it is full or bring it to school on the day your class is here, so we can get more Gems on our class poster.

12.: Persuasive texts use “Time Connectives” to link paragraphs. Examples of Time Connectives: firstly, then, secondly, next, before, meanwhile, during, finally, in conclusion. Complete Task 12 stencil included Include some of these words, when editing your persuasive text (Activity 13).

13. Edit and review your writing. Make sure you look at spelling, punctuation and the use of grammar. Ensure you have used emotive (strong) words which we covered in Activity 4. Include persuasive sentence starters which was covered in Activity 8 and ‘time connectives’ which we looked at in Activity 12. Literacy Task 13 stencil included shows you the criteria used to mark your writing.

14. Add suffixes to your chosen spelling words (from Activity 2) to build new words. A suffix is a letter, or group of letters, that is added to the end of a root (base) word. Common suffixes include s, ed, ing, ly, and tion. e.g. shop shopper shops shopped shopping etc

15. Read: Analyzing Persuasive Texts (Literacy Task 15 stencils included) and answer the 5 questions on the second stencil. This will provide more information on how persuasive texts are structured to assist you with your writing.

16.:Rhetorical questions are used to persuade an audience to think the same way we do. It is used for effect and it does not require an answer. e.g. Doesn't everyone know that we could concentrate better if we got more fresh air and exercise? Activity: Finish these three rhetorical questions. You may choose any topic to write about. 1. How much longer do …………………….. ? 2. Doesn't everyone know …………………? 3. Are we expected to……………………….. ? 17. Produce a final copy of your writing. Remember to include your opening paragraph, three paragraphs with each one stating an argument/opinion and the closing statement paragraph. Your final copy can be hand written or published on a computer.

18. Write interesting sentences using each of your chosen spelling words (activity 2) Underline list words. Check each sentence to ensure it makes sense and is punctuated correctly.

19. Read the clues to solve the ‘Natural Disasters’ crossword. Task 19 stencil included

20. Handwriting: Copy the passage about “Persuasive Texts” in your neatest Handwriting. Task 2 stencil included Read the Rubric before you start and complete it when you have finished your writing.
