Congratulations to Interact Students

The College Interact Club students were well received by the Burleigh Heads Rotary members at their breakfast meeting Thursday. Club members enjoyed the students’ company, their positive presentation, enthusiasm and the initiative shown in the Marymount Interact Club projects. Well done to Hope Brass, Sammi Maunder and Thomas Weatherall for the outstanding way they represented the College, reflected in this feedback from Jacki King and Anthony Zirilli.

Find out more at SchoolFundingFacts.comSources: My School funding data 2014; Australian Bureau of Statistics, Schools, 2015. Authorised by Ross Fox, National Catholic Education Commission, Level 3, 156 Gloucester St, Sydney

For 200 years, Catholic schools have educated children in Australia. Today, Catholic schools enrol more than 760,000 students in 1,731 schools across Australia.

It is important to understand the facts on funding for Catholic schools, which educate one in five Australian students.

A strong Catholic education system contributes to a strong Australian community. All governments provide important funding for Catholic schools along with families who contribute to the costs of Catholic education through fees and fundraising.

According to the Australian Government’s My School website, Catholic students receive, on average, 17 per cent less government funding than students in government schools. In dollar terms, Catholic school students received $10,000 in government funding in 2014, on average, while students in government schools received $12,100.

The Commonwealth provides 76 per cent of the government funding Catholic schools receive. State and territory governments provide 82 per cent of the funding for government schools.

Even when parent fees are taken into consideration, Catholic schools operate with roughly the same level of recurrent funding as government schools.

Catholic schools save the taxpayer $1.6 billion each year in recurrent funding and take the pressure off government schools.

Catholic school parents also provide the majority of funding for capital works to build schools the government would otherwise have to fund – creating additional savings for governments and taxpayers.

Our Homework Club runs every Thursday afternoon from 3:10- 4:30pm in the College library.

All students from Years 7-12 are welcome and there is no need to book in; students just sign in when they arrive. The Learning Support teachers and a Maths specialist teacher supervise and are available to assist students with homework and assignments as needed.

Homework Club also provides an opportunity to access the library facilities after school hours and is a great place to meet with classmates to work on group assignments.

Crossing the Road

All students entering or leaving the school grounds are required to adhere to the road traffic rules of crossing the road at designated points.

Students should never cross the road against the traffic by ignoring the lights or at any other points along the road.

This is particularly important at the crossing at Reedy Creek Road to the industrial site & Bermuda Street to Treetops.

Students are to make their way to the designated points of crossing by keeping to the footpaths.

Students should never walk between the fence and the road but to stay inside the fence on the footpath at all times.

Students and parents are reminded that students are to travel directly to and from school.

The majority of students are to be commended for the excellent manner in which they present themselves in both uniform and behaviour when travelling on public transport or on foot. They demonstrate respect for themselves and for others as young adults.

I encourage you to discuss these matters with your child. For further information please consult the Student Record Book.

Some reminders about Senior assessment:

Year 11 & 12 In Class Exam are about to commence: Mon 6 June - Tue 14 June.

Year 11 & 12 Exam Block: Wed 15 June to Thur 23 June Exam block privileges apply. If you are notified by the teacher or Academic Coordinator, your child will be expected to remain at school every day, completing the exams and the overdue work.

A Year 12 QCS (Short Response Item) practice exam will be run at the end of Exam block - compulsory attendance. Competency catch-up for all VET related subjects will apply during exam block, with compulsory attendance required.

Subject Changes for Semester II

Students should be collecting forms from SAO and preparing the necessary requests, with signatures, for subject selection alterations for Semester II. I can make a preliminary process of these requests to confirm class sizes and so on. Students can then commence with a new timetable from the first day of Term III.

New Senior Curriculum Trial:

Our Year 11 Maths B students are part of the State wide trial in preparation for the new Senior curriculum, assessment and reporting to be commenced in 2018. This trial involved a current test which will, for the most part, replaced the end of Semester test usually undertaken. This trial exam was very similar to the content and program currently delivered. There was no disadvantage to our students undertaking this alternative ‘trial’ test, as a result. The trial exam will go towards their overall grades. The students are to be congratulated on their attentiveness to the test. They rose to the occasion and looked to complete the test with both confidence and success. We look forward to hearing about the external marking and the results they achieved.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on 3rd of June is a moveable feast occuring each year nineteen days after Pentecost. The month of June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Throughout June the Church invites the faithful to spend the whole month reflecting on what it means to live our lives in such a way that we reveal the Loving Heart of a Merciful God to the whole world. In this Year of Mercy it is particularly appropriate given that we celebrate the love of Jesus for all peoples and the key message is ‘Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.’

Reconciliation Week

Our prayer over the past week has been the Prayer for the Journey of Healing marking Reconciliation Week. The prayer reminds us of the pain and suffering of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people originating in the destruction of their land, language and culture, the policy of separation of children from family and the ongoing effects of these past events on communities in the present time. It reminds us of the need for compassion and the grace of God as we go forward so that a more just and equitable future for all can be created.

Parish Sacremental Program

The Parish Sacramental Program will be launched in the coming week. See Fr Ken’s message regarding this in this Newsletter. Any student of the College who has not been through a sacramental programme for First Communion

or Confirmation and who is interested in doing so can get details from the Parish Office or from myself in school. As there is a parent meeting on Friday 10 June, those interested should collect and complete forms as soon as possible .

A special preparation session that will be run at Marymount College in July and August.

Confirmation will be celebrated on Wednesday 17 August with First Eucharist on Sunday 21 August.

Year 8 Night of Living History

The Night of Living History is always entertaining , fun and full of high energy as the Year 8s parade onto the floor of the Doyle Centre and show off their knowledge of their chosen historical figure by taking questions in the first person. This year I focussed mainly on the religious figures and philosophers in attendance such as St Ignatius of Loyola, Martin Luther, a Pilgrim, a Witch, a Buddhist Monk, some Joan’s of Arc, Joseph Locke and Thomas Paine. It was delightful to find that most of them could answer the questions put and had obviously prepared very well for the event. Martin Luther was most convincing and very proud of his 95 theses! We had a great conversation.

Congratulations and thank you to all of Year 8 for a fabulous evening.

Rosies Have a Heart Day

Rosies Have A Heart Day celebrated on Friday of last week was a wonderful community event which raised almost $1900 for Rosies .

The students who went on the street with Rosies for the first time on Tuesday night have been so enthused by the experience that they were anxious to sign up to go again very soon. This experience provides an opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zone and, for a short time, see the reality of homelessness up close. It is a transforming experience for all participants. It shows them that they can actually make a difference.

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

Year 9 Reflection Day

Year 9 Reflection Day takes place on Wednesday 15 June at Bond University. Students should bring their signed permission slip back as soon as possible. This day is compulsory for all students and the College should be informed of foreseeable absence.

Year 11 Retreat

Year 11 Retreat permission slips, which were distributed two weeks ago, should be brought back to the College as soon as they are completed. A copy of the letter and permissio slip is available on the parent portal. This Retreat takes place in week one of next term and is compulsory for all students.

The Smith Family’s Student 2 Student Buddy Program

How excellent is it when seven of our Year 8 students and one from Year 9 commit to spending three lots of twenty minutes each week for the next eighteen weeks helping disadvantaged children across Queensland improve their reading! Earlier today these students did some training to enable them to do just that as part of The Smith Family’s Student 2 Student Buddy program. They have each been allocated a buddy somewhere in Queensland , who is at least two years younger than themselves and who has reading problems. Our students will listen to them reading each week , over the telephone at prearranged time. They are to be congratulated on stepping up to help change someone’s life through helping them improve their reading thus opening up all manner of opportunities in the future. The program has been extremely successful in bringing about these successes over the years it has been running.

MARYMOUNT MOB AT MARYMOUNT PRIMARY RECONCILLIATION ASSEMBLY

This week we were invited to attend Marymount Primary School’s Assembly for Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year in a bid to bring about true reconciliation between and for all Australians.

Mrs Crowe’s Year 5M led the Assembly with the help of the Primary School Mob, some of whom played the clap sticks as the class processed in. The class had chosen special songs they felt were meaningful for the time, and students took turns sharing their prayers for reconciliation. As a symbolic gesture, coloured fabric was unfurled and swept above the seated students who were invited to reach out to touch the fabric as it passed overhead.

It was wonderful to be a part of this special assembly, and we thank Year 5M for their hard work, and the Primary School for including the Marymount Mob in their celebrations.

It was a fun night of games, bonding and pizza

Interact Social Gathering

Last Friday Interact held its first social gathering for the year, with almost 30 members attending.

It was a fun night of games, bonding and pizza, and not even the DVD-related technical difficulties could detract from the enjoyment. It was a great opportunity for members to get to know one another, in particular those younger students who are new to Interact. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and are looking forward to many more great times with the Club. Thank you to Mrs Scott, Ms Aki, Ms Burgess and Ms Gower for organising and supervising the night.

Interact Breakfast

The Burleigh Rotary Club is the sponsor of our Marymount Interact Club, and networks with us regularly to provide advice and support. Each Thursday, Burleigh Rotary members host a breakfast meeting to discuss club matters. This week, Marymount Interact were invited to attend, with Sammi, Hope and myself as representatives.

During the breakfast, representatives from Riding for the Disabled and Burleigh Kindergarten addressed the group, and were in turn presented with cheques from Rotary to assist their organisations with ongoing costs. It was wonderful to see firsthand the good that clubs like Rotary do in the community. It was also a moment of pride for us to think that Marymount Interact is a part of a group that does so much for others. The members were interested to know more about our club and the projects we are working on this year.

We told them about our ongoing fundraising activities which provide resources to a Northern Territory school, as well as much needed funds to several community groups in East Timor. We received positive feedback and commendations for our efforts, which was a great motivation for us all to keep up the hard work.

We thank Burleigh Rotary for their kind invitation, and Ms Burgess for chaperoning us on the day.

HISTORY

YEAR 8 - NIGHT OF LIVING HISTORY

Students spoke fluently and knowledgably, as their chosen historical figure, and were impressive in their poise and confidence

On Monday 30 May, excited Year 8 students, their parents, siblings, relatives, friends and teachers all gathered at Marymount for the Night of Living History; and what a spectacular night it was.

The students spoke fluently and knowledgably, as their chosen historical figure, and were impressive in their poise and confidence. A big thank you to the Year 8 students who became so engaged in the project and to the families who helped to bring their child’s vision of the night to reality.

Thanks is due to the many people behind the scenes: to the Year 8 teachers: Mr Geyer, Ms. Gorman, Ms Kennedy, Mr Kelleher, Ms Mullins, Ms Sewell, Ms Mathers and Ms Leighton who helped prepare the students through the research process and preparation for the evening; to Annette McMahon and all the staff in the Learning Support Centre; to Ms Hanson, Assistant Principal Junior Curriculum; to Karen Harrison in SAO for the beautiful programme; to Ms Gower for the photography; and to the groundsmen for setting up the venue.

Everyone at Marymount was very proud of your sons and daughters, as I know you were, and I trust you all had a wonderful night. Thanks for the hard work and enthusiasm.

Kind regards,

Cheryl FraserHead of Humanities Department

My person was Raphael and I chose him because I am interested in art. I searched through books in the library and the internet to find my information. He was an important figure because his paintings were beautiful and much appreciated in Renaissance Italy.

The most interesting aspect of my project was finding his paintings. People at the Night of Living History were most interested in his paintings. If I were ever to meet Raphael I would ask him how he managed to cope with all his commissions.

DEBATING

INTERMEDIATE B DEBATERS

Students represented the College well, showing great public speaking skills and sportsmanship

This week our Intermediate B Debaters completed their fourth round of debating at Varsity College. They were very excited to receive their badges and wore them with pride.

The first two rounds were prepared debates, where the students worked together for a couple of weeks leading up to the debate to prepare their case, main points and speeches. The final two round were secret subject/short prep debates. The students did not find out the topic until they arrived at the venue on the afternoon of the debate. They then had 1.5 hours to work together (without their coaches) to come up with their case, main points and write their speeches. This was challenging as many of the students had not debated prior to this year. Despite this, the students represented the College well by showing great public speaking skills and sportsmanship. Each team has had at least one win, we are waiting to see if we will make it to the finals.

Thank you to the students and their families who have committed their time to participating in coaching and the debates. We have thoroughly enjoyed being your coaches for this year.

YEAR 7 MARBLE RUN

After some vigorous planning Year 7 students were very excited this week to put their Physics knowledge to the test by constructing a marble run out of cheap everyday items that would allow a marble to speed up, slow down, change direction and finally come to a stop.

There were some very clever designs and the students had a great time testing their devices.

NEW FRIENDS

The cows are fenced off behind Marymount’s tennis courts, and happy to welcome visitors

There has been a new addition to the Marymount Community! Last week, three baby calves, aged 2-3 weeks old, were on campus. The cows are fenced off behind Marymount’s tennis courts, and happy to welcome visitors.

Students in Mr Larkin’s Agricultural Science class are raising these cows and some other classes have opportunities to feed the cows. Each of the calves is always eager to greet new friends, even the students

from the Primary School!

There are two female and one male calves, and the debate goes on; should we name the boy Mason or Benny? The male calf responds to both, so you can take your pick as to what you’d like to call him.

We wish Mr Larkin’s class the best of luck when raising these lively animals.

STEM Cup was an after-school competition where teams battled it out weekly in a range of hands-on, exciting Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) challenges.Designed by specialist faculty areas within Griffith University.

The event consisted of teams of three (3) competing for six weeks from Year levels 5,6 7 or 8. The Grand Final, will be held at Griffith University on Friday 17 June where the tops teams from each region will compete. This requires the students to use skills and knowledge gained during the challenges, but at a whole new level.

Out of 30 Secondary science teams entered, 10 have made the Grand final. Marymount College entered three teams (2 Year 8 and 1 Year 7 team). While all three teams did very well we are thrilled to announce that our Year 7 team The Marymount Molecules consisting of Jared Crowley, Mia Forbes, and Ty Brennan have made it through to the grand final. We wish them the best of luck.

The Mako’s string of victories came to an end on Wednesday night at the hands of PBS SHS in the final round of the Titans Cup.

After one of our best starts of the season and an early try to Tom Norfolk (wing) things went down hill in the last few minutes of the first half as the opposition scored 3 tries out wide to lead at the break 4-14. Players now understand the importance of maintaining intensity and keeping their heads up when the tide changes.

Marymount’s second stanza picked up where they had begun the game with strong defence, speed and positive communication. A well worked try to Tavis Rolls (second-row) which was converted by Matt Munckton (centre) brought the Makos to within striking distance at 4 points behind. The boys toiled well and deserved more through their great discipline but it wasn’t to be with PBC crossing for a late try to finish 8 point winners, 10-18.

The man of the match votes were close between Jack Webber (front row), Munckton and the deserved winner Rolls (6 votes).

The next game is the semi-final against Keebra Park SHS at Nerang on Wednesday at 6pm.

Thanks to all of the supporters who have been braving the cooler conditions. We hope to see more there again next week.

Up the Makos!!!

RUGBY LEAGUE

Unfortunately due to the untimely arrival of the rain yesterday afternoon, our first week of AGCC Interschool Sports trials had to be cancelled. Four more trial afternoons will be held on 9, 16 and 23 June and the 14 July. Round 1 of next semester’s AGCC competition commences on Thursday 21 July.

Students who have chosen tennis as their interschool sport will require their own tennis racket; while students participating in soccer and futsal are required to bring their own shin pads, and purchase a pair of the College football socks.

A reminder to parents that it is compulsory for your child to participate in the College’s interschool sport program every Thursday. Please do not use this time in the afternoon to schedule appointments.

Sport Trials Cancelled

On Thursday, we were set to have our sport trials.

I was very excited because the sport I choose was Touch.

That morning I watched the weather report and saw that it was suppose to be raining around the time the trials were to be held.

I was so upset because I was really looking forward to the trials, but I still had hope that we could play.

Imagine my luck when the time for the trials came and it wasn’t raining! I was so happy that we could still play.

But the excitement didn’t last long, not even ten minutes! (We hadn’t even started playing yet) It started pouring down with rain. All the Year 7 Touch girls had to go inside and do homework.

I was upset and so were many others.

I’m really looking forward to next week’s trials though!

Let’s just hope that it’s bright and sunny!
