Computer network

• A network is a number of computers and their peripheral devices connected

together in some way. The simplest form of network is when one computer is

linked to another computer. The Internet is a connected set of networks that

links millions of computers.

• Computers communicate with each other through a network. The role of a

network is to transfer data from one location to another. Data stored on one

computer can be obtained by people using computers, often thousand of

kilometers away.

Establishing a network

• Networks have changed the way we live and work. In most workplaces or schools they are a necessity.

There are number of advantages and disadvantages of setting up a network.

INFORMATION NETWORK

Advantages Disadvantages

• Allows users to share peripherals such as printer, hard disks and the internet.

• Expensive to install.

• Allows users to share applications where for instance a software can be used on the same site by a certain number of users

• Maintenance of network requires considerable time and expertise.

• Allows users to share data • When the server goes down the entire network does not operate.

• Files are restricted. Only authorised users can have access.

• Damage equipment such as a broken cable can stop the entire network.

• Improved communication • Networks are targets for hackers and viruses.

Page 9: Term 2 Grade 9 Computer Studies UNIT 2: INFORMATION …soe20.pomgrammar.ac.pg/PDF/GR9 IT IT TKAUMAS PPT1.pdf · The Internet is a WAN that links all computers all over the world

Network components• There are range of components for networks such as servers, work stations, hubs,

switches, routers, data transmission medium, etc.

A server is a controlling computer in a network that stores the programs and data

shared by the user. It provides access to files, applications or peripheral devices.

Examples of servers are file server, print server, mail server, web server.

A workstation is a personal computer on a network. It has memory,

storage and processing capabilities. They access a server for files and

applications but process the data themselves.

A hub is a central connecting device in a network. Each node is

connected directly to a hub. Most hubs receive a data packet from one

node and send that data packet to all nodes on the network. This created

a lot of unnecessary network traffic as most of the nodes will ignore the

data because it is not addressed to them. A better type of hub is called a

switch.

10

A switch is an intelligent hub that only sends data to a specific node. It

looks at the address of the data packet and sends it to that address. A switch

reduces the volume of traffic on a network compared to a hub.

A router is also a very intelligent hub that directs (routes) to and from other

networks. A router maintains a table of the available routes and their

conditions. It uses this table to determine the best route for a given data

packet. Routers are often used to connect to the Internet.

Data transmission medium refers to the pathway for transferring data

between the devices. It is either a wire transmission or a wireless

transmission.

Wire(cable) transmission (Guided Media) transfers the data through

wires and cables.

Wireless transmission (Unguided Media) moves the data through air

and space.

Local Area Network (LAN) – this network is formed

whenever computers are connected together in a small

geographical area e.g. floors, building, school etc.

within a radius of 10m up to 3km. A LAN is a often a

collection of computers and peripheral devices. It

enables users to share resources and communicate

with each other effectively.

16

Wide Area Network (WAN) – this network covers

unlimited geographical area e.g. across states, entire

country or entire world. They are expensive to build

and have low data rates and higher speed (over

100Mbps or higher).

It is often made up of a collection of LAN. A WAN may

use a private leased line, the normal telephone

network or a combination of both.

The Internet is a WAN that links all computers all over

the world.

Page 17: Term 2 Grade 9 Computer Studies UNIT 2: INFORMATION …soe20.pomgrammar.ac.pg/PDF/GR9 IT IT TKAUMAS PPT1.pdf · The Internet is a WAN that links all computers all over the world

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) – this network covers a metropolitan

area, like a town or city within a radius of between 5 and 50km. It is a

geographically distributed telecommunications network that interconnects

multiple local area networks (LANs).

A MAN may consist of connections to a company’s headquarters,

branch offices, cloud services and other facilities. Typically a router is

used to connect a LAN to WAN.

Personal Area Network (PAN)- is the interconnection of information

technology devices within the range of individuals person, typically within a

range of 1 meter. It provides data transmission among devices such as

computers, smartphones, tablets and personal digital assistants
