Use of powerful words

Writers use powerful words or strong words in descriptions.

Synonyms can add meaning to your descriptions

Have a look at this example:

• Big: giant, enormous, large, immense, great, huge

The stranger starred at me with big eyes.

The stranger starred at me with enormous eyes.

Another example:

• Asked: beseeched, implored, queried, inquired, petitioned

My Best Friend

My cousin, Christopher, is the son of my father’s brother .He’s three years younger than me and we didn’t know each other very well as children because he and his family lived on the other side of the country at that time. Since then, he’s married and moved closer so we meet quite often and I’ve got to know him better.

There’s nothing very remarkable about Chris’ appearance. He’s of average height and medium build, and he’s got curly, mousy hair and a fair complexion. As he’s quite short-sighted like me, he wears glasses. The clothes he likes are mostly casual: jeans or shorts and a tee-shirt. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in a suit!

He’s a very active person who loves the outdoor life. He’s extremely practical and he can build and repair almost anything, no matter complicated it is. Another characteristic he has is that he’s very outgoing. If you go to a show with him and members of the audience are invited onto the stage, Chris will be the first to volunteer. The thing I appreciate most about him, however, is his sense of humour. If I’m depressed, he can always cheer me up with a joke or a funny story.

They say you can choose your friends but not your relations. In Chris’s case, I feel I’m very lucky because he’s not only my cousin but also one of my best friends.
