Term 1, Week 7 - Wednesday 18 March 2015 Kia ora families, We are quickly coming to the end of our first term and as we do it is worth considering our 2014 progress. I have placed a brief summary of our progress and achievement on our website (http://www.waitakiri.school.nz/Our+Learning.html ). What is evident is the hard work and dedication of the team at Waitākiri School; the support from you our families and the community, and the additional support from the Ministry of Education saw our children achieve very positive outcomes in 2014. We have a strong foundation from which to build from, and in 2015 we are working extremely hard to make sure your child is happy, enjoying the challenge of learning and making positive progress. This will mean at times you child will feel like he/she is in the learning pit which can lead to some negative feelings about school and learning. Our job is twofold; 1. Encourage children into the learning pit 2. Provide them with strategies to make their way out of the learning pit. If we do this well your child will get that wonderful 'Aha!' feeling that comes when we learn something new. An easy example is when a child learns to ride a bike. We encourage them to do it, it can hurt, it can be frustrating, it can be upsetting, it requires perseverance, feedback, watching others, and then at some point if we preserve, the 'aha' moment - I CAN RIDE! Have a look at the link to the learning pit. Talk with your child about situations where you have been in the learning pit (adults often avoid going into the learning pit!) and how you had to listen to feedback, persevere, take advice, read, research etc until you finally achieved some new learning. Children who can successfully go into the learning pit and make their way out are REAL Learning Heroes at Waitākiri School. More road safety....... We have asked before that children do not ride their bikes on the footpath. Last week we had a serious complaint from a parent about her pre-schooler being knocked over by a cyclist. The guidelines are quite clear (http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/roadcode/cyclist-code/about- cycling/cyclist-responsibilities.html#share). Please help keep our children and families safe. If you are going to let your child ride on the footpath know there are two non-negotiable areas, outside both campuses. Cross the road using the pedestrian crossing or at the lights. CHISNALLWOOD/WAITĀKIRI TRIATHLON What a team of REAL TRIATHLETE HEROES! This team went all out and gave this event their best shot! They all completed the event with smiles on their dials (ok so the smiles may have come a little after the finish!) Some parents of our team commented that it was just the ‘boost their child’s confidence needed’ and ‘despite the nerves, there was no turning back! He was entered and was going to complete it no matter what’. This was the first Canterbury event of the year so it was a huge step for these kids to enter. What a positive start to their sporty year ahead!

COMMUNITY NOTICES FROM THE BURWOOD DOOR KNOCK TEAM The Christchurch Community Response (CCR) team have been out door knocking in Burwood over the last couple of weeks. CCR works in collaboration with a number of local agencies door knocking to check if all’s okay and if support is right at hand. If you have been missed when the CCR team called and did not receive their flyer then here is a little from them. So .. how can we help you? We have access to many community and church groups, as well as NZ Red Cross and the Christchurch City Council. We care about your general wellbeing. If necessary we can point you in the right direction for further assistance. There might well be things you’d like to do to help others. We’d love to have you involved in some of the things that are happening in our community, like: Selwyn Centre – 65+ social events LiVE Community Centre Youth & Children’s Programmes Community Transport Sit & Be Fit Classes Community Lunches Playgroups Music & Movement Senior Fitness Programmes You can contact, All Saint’s Anglican Church, 305 New Brighton Rd, 3834656 or Burwood Christian Centre, 52-54 Bassett St, 3834895 for more help. However you may be struggling with EQC or insurance company; living in cold, draughty conditions while you wait for repairs/rebuild; feeling isolated; needing help to move out while repairs are done; or just feeling stressed out with quake issues – then there are agencies that can help. RAS offers free legal advice, 0800777299, and others can help too. Contact those above. THOMSON SKATE JAM Thomson Park, Marine Parade from 12-4pm on Saturday 21 March, wet weather postponement to Sunday 22nd March A big focus for the event is to support new skaters with free use of equipment and coaching tips throughout the event PLUS a jam competition where beginners through to experienced skaters can show their best trick in the bowl. This event is a partnership between Scott Buckner from Cheapskates Skate Skool and the Christchurch City Council.

I’m delighted to confirm that the Council has today agreed to go ahead with the design of the new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre on QEII Park. The Council also agreed staff should continue to have discussions with the Ministry of Education regarding the location of the proposed recreation and sport centre and Avonside Girls’ and Shirley Boys’ High Schools, which are being rebuilt on the site. The Council decision comes after the Burwood–Pegasus Community Board recommended at its 16 February meeting that the Council should move to the design of the facility. It was also decided at today’s Council meeting that a joint workshop will be held to further discuss the scope of the new facility. Representatives from the Council’s Communities, Housing and Economic Development Committee, the Burwood–Pegasus Community Board and the Community Advisory Group ( which includes representatives from a group of eight community and sport organisations in north east Christchurch) will attend the workshop. Today’s decision is another huge step towards the realisation of the new recreation and sport centre and we’re looking forward to seeing the plans for the facility begin to take shape. We’ll be undertaking ground improvement works in mid-2016 before beginning construction in late 2016. The new facility is expected to open in 2018. Features proposed for the facility include a 25 x 25 metre lane pool, toddlers’ pool area, leisure area/water attractions, outdoor/BBQ areas, a fitness centre, group exercise studio and a café. The exact scope of the facility will be determined through the design process. As you are aware, the Council last year carried out geotechnical investigations of QEII Park to determine the suitability of the site. We’ll be carrying out more detailed site investigations during the design phase to help us confirm the type of facility we’ll build. I’m excited about what this decision means for the eastern suburbs and am looking forward to updating you as the project progresses. The information from the survey will be used to inform decisions about the Burwood community.
