Term 1 - Week 7 11th March 2019 situation at the front gate. We hope this will not discourage our Bomaderry visitors, but may help students remember not to wander out of these gates during school hours. Safety first. Relay for Life – 19 Days to Go! School Walkathon and Local Nowra Event Relay For Life is a global movement that brings communities together to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost and fight back against cancer. Bomaderry Public School staff get together each year to form a Relay for Life team. We attend the event, and also fundraise leading up to the day, in order to give our little bit to the cancer cause. If you would like to join our team, please log onto the Relay for Life website and search for our local Nowra event, and then our school team. You could also come along to the Nowra event on Saturday March 30th 10am – Sunday March 31st 10am at the Nowra Showground. Our BPS school community will also hold a related fundraiser to add much needed funds to this global movement. Our students will participate in an afternoon walkathon event held on Thursday 21st March. Please support this fundraiser in any way you can. Every $1.00 donation to your child’s walkathon effort adds up. Reminders about Internet and Device Use It can not be stressed enough, that screen time for youngsters should be monitored and limited. Adults should be aware of sites, games, information being accessed and the length of screen time their children are experiencing. Children also need time OFF devices to socialise, explore the world, build relationships and learn gross motor skills, resilience, team building, language skills and the list goes on. Many things can be learned and experienced using technology, however the vast majority of talking, listening, taking turns, speaking politely, showing empathy, and other important social skills need to be taught when interacting with others. Please take some time this week to chat with your family about the amount of time spent on devices. Maybe set some agreed limits, or consider a device-free family night? At a minimum, it is suggested to designate an area for children to use devices online where you can monitor their access. Excursion Notes/Dates/Monies Please remember to adhere to the cut-off dates and other instructions on all excursion permission notes from school. We have dates for payments and permission note returns, clearly marked on each note. Our organising staff have to pre-book transport and venues, purchase tickets, order catering and other requirements – all ahead of time. The dates MUST be adhered to so that students DO NOT MISS OUT. We CAN NOT accept late paperwork. Thank you in advance, we do not want any students to miss these opportunities. Annual School Contribution Fees Voluntary school fees are now due. These fees help cover the costs for stationery, art supplies, classroom resources, etc. Every dollar helps us to supply the best resources for our students and ensure everyone has Dear Parents and Carers THIS FRIDAY 15th March is SCHOOL PHOTO DAY Please remember full Summer school uniform; including shirt with logo, black shoes and white socks. We will be looking our shiny, Bomaderry best! Please send Order Envelopes with your child on Friday. Quality Work At Bomaderry Public, teachers ensure that their class has a clear understanding of what they need to achieve during each lesson. This explicit teaching allows students to strive to achieve high quality learning and work samples. Congratulations to Jaiiden, Tanesha, Dekoda, Maddie, Amelia and Riba from 4/5/6B who achieved high quality work in Mathematics last week. These students were demonstrating excellent understanding in Mathematics lessons; using Newman’s Analysis prompts, explaining their thinking, using self- assessment tools and also reflecting on Mathematical processes. News from The Nest Our new playgroup has been well attended over the last two weeks. 15 families have come along to share in the fun and learning, and to meet other families from the local community. The children have enjoyed a variety of activities that focus on all areas of development, and help improve communication and early literacy skills. At playgroup we support parents to be their child’s first teacher. It’s been great to see parents chatting and forming friendships, as their children play and learn. Playgroup will continue every Wednesday morning at 9.30am during school terms. NSW State Election Fundraiser The election date is looming - Saturday 23rd March - and a polling booth will be in action in our school hall on the day. This day attracts thousands of voters through our front gate – an opportunity for our P&C to fundraise which is too good to miss. In order to make the most of this flow of people, we would like to hold a successful barbecue stall. These fundraisers do not run themselves! WE NEED YOU. When you come along to vote, please consider an hour to help out with a friend or couple of other BPS parents. For more information of how to get involved please call Scott on 0412 770 713. School Gate Entries Please be reminded to use the appropriate pedestrian gates at all times. We are currently trialling a ‘pull the gate closed’

Library Matters Congratulations to the following students who received their library monitor’s badge at the assembly last week: Jacob, Bridget, Steven, Maddison, Kloe-Lee, Natasha, Amelia, Bella, Paige, Matilda, Will and Jolie. It is great to see their enthusiasm for this important role in our school library. Currently, any student who is independently borrowing a book is receiving a ticket for a lucky dip. The prize is a free choice book from the current Book Club catalogue. The lucky dip will be drawn at the next whole school assembly. Bus Safety Awareness

Please see below links to the current Bus Safety Awareness Brochure and Interactive Road Safety Education which outlines requirements for students and parents when boarding and alighting buses, along with road use and parental supervision. We are seeing an increase in students ignoring repeat driver instruction to not cross in front of buses after alighting. This action is life threatening and falls within the "highly dangerous" behaviour and will result in suspension of the student/s. https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/downloads/bus-safety-school-students.pdf https://www.safetytown.com.au/
