LEADERSHIP AT MACKILLOP COLLEGE 2019
Catholic schools establish quality learning environments where students participate in the Church?s mission of discipleship within the Catholic tradition.
While the Principal and school?s leadership team carry primary responsibility for school improvement, our Leaders of Learning and Leaders of Pastoral Care have responsibility for developing high standards of teaching and learning in their subject, ensuring our students are cared for and supported, and also play a major role in the development of school policy and practice.
Each year group has a leader who works with a team of staff to guide students along the way of their educational journey.
Each Key Learning Area has a teacher who leads the staff who teach in the areas contained in that faculty; in 2019 each KLA will have an Assistant Leader of Learning to work within that KLA. We also have a leadership role in Literacy and Numeracy in order to support all staff in this vital area. At MacKillop College we are very fortunate to have a teacher who assists our students in their transition after they leave the school and a teacher who ensures students who have special needs have those needs met.
The Key Learning Areas are: Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Human Society and Its Environment, Creative Arts, Languages, Technological and Applied Studies, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.

Cath will be the Principal until I return in August. I am taking some extended long service leave this year and I am confident that Cath will add great value to MacKillop College. Cath is an outstanding leader and in her role as Assistant Principal in 2018 she led the area of curriculum and administration in a highly professional and dynamic way.
I intend to do some travels and embrace other opportunities which will enrich my role as Principal when I return later in the year. I will keep staff, students and their families in my prayers and I wish you a successful and happy year.

When we thrive, we engage resiliently and resourcefully in our learning, think creatively and solve problems, connect positively with others, become active members of our community and experience growth and success.
#weThrive @MacKillop develops and strengthens relationships, builds positive emotions, enhances personal resilience, promotes spirituality and encourages a healthy lifestyle.
We have begun 2019 with a new initiative which we believe will enhance our #weThrive program. All students and families in Years 11 and 12 had conversations with their PC teachers before the commencement of school. These conversations aimed to establish a strong partnership and relationship between
home and school; this allows for a strong sense of community and belonging to be established. They also provided the opportunity to explore personal and academic goals for the year, allowing both home and school to be on the same page and supporting your children and our students to achieve success this year. Further, they established open and honest communication which can be continued throughout the year. I thank all involved in this new structure for their interest in and commitment to these conversations; feedback has suggested they were very successful and a great way to commence the year.
At our opening assembly students were introduced to our Term 1 theme for #weThrive@MacKillop. Mrs Nicole O?Connell, our new Wellbeing Co-ordinator, spoke of relationships being at the centre of strong wellbeing. Our connection to family, peers, others and ourselves has a huge impact on our wellbeing. We thrive as we develop positive relationships with those around us. Being kind, accepting and welcoming others, taking time to share stories, engaging in activities with others are all ways to enhance our relationships. We will encourage students to focus on their relationships this term and see the benefits that ensue.
It is possible to learn how to thrive, and with the aim of nurturing those skills in our young people, my newsletter articles this term will focus on opportunities, learning experiences and insights that will assist parents with practical ways to assist your child to ?lead the good life? and thrive.

INAUGURAL MASS 2019
On Wednesday, 6th February MacKillop College celebrated the beginning of the school year with our Inaugural Mass. Mrs Anne O?Brien, our College Principal who commentated the Mass, shared a short reflection on the importance of our school theme for this year which is Respect, reminding us that Jesus and our school patron, St Mary MacKillop, are both wonderful role models of the importance of being respectful in how we approach our school days.
We began with the lighting of our school candle by our new school captains, Annika Toohey and Kyden Power O?Toole, followed by students from each year group who carried in their year candle, and Michelle Marino, one of our teachers, who carried in the staff candle. The lighting of the candles reminds us that the light of Christ will guide us through this new school year.
The musicians and singers, led by Mr Rob Denham, added a wonderful depth to the celebration and reminded us of the incredible musical talent that we have within our school. I was very thankful for all the wonderful volunteers who participated in the Mass by carrying out the readings, participating in the processions and altar serving. We were very blessed to have Fr Paul Gooley, our Parish Priest, celebrate the Mass with us to create a very special occasion in which students, staff and parents were able to participate.
Following the Mass, the student leadership team of 2019 received their badges and formally accepted the responsibility and challenges that leadership brings. We are thankful that they have taken on these responsibilit ies and pray that each one of them will follow in the footsteps of Jesus to be a servant leader within our school.

HOW DOES ALPHA YOUTH WORK?
Alpha Youth is run over 9 weeks and is facilitated by Fr Peter, our Parish Youth Ministry Co-ordinator Vanessa Denham and the Youth Ministry Officers from each of our secondary schools.
In each session you eat food, watch a short inspirational video and discuss questions in small groups.
- Food has a way of bringing people together and building community. So, each session kicks off with some snacks and a catch up chat.
- The videos tackle core questions about life and faith from a Christian perspective. There are 13 episodes in the Alpha course. Each episode averages 23 minutes in length.
- Throughout each episode, there are discussion breaks. These breaks give everyone a chance to freely share thoughts and ideas in small groups.
- Along the way there are opportunities to experience worship through music and moments for prayer .
Alpha Youth is a great starting point for those young people who are seeking answers to faith questions, those who are discerning the direction of their faith journey and those who are simply interested in discussing the Christian faith with peers.

YEAR 7 ASSEMBLY
Year 7 students met in the College Theatre on Thursday where Mrs Erin Denham spoke to them about sport and the upcoming swimming carnival. The swimming carnival is a major event and a great day. The boys and girls are encouraged to compete, support other team members and wear as much of their House colour as possible. Parents and carers are most welcome to come and support their child(ren) at the swimming carnival.
The students were also spoken to by Tracy Knight, the College Counsellor. Tracy let them know about her role and how she and the College can support students and their families. She also advised students of the process for scheduling a meeting with her.
PASTORAL CARE (PC) CLASS MORNING TEAS
All Year 7 parents and carers should have received an invitation to a PC morning tea. These all occur in the coming week. The first is on Monday for parents of students in Flinders. Morning teas commence at 9.15a.m. and will conclude at 10.00a.m.
RESPECT
The number one rule at the College and the official focus theme for 2019 is Respect. In addressing this theme with students, I generally break it down into four categories:
- Respect for self - Respect for others - Respect for the environment - Respect for property
Self-respect implies that a person will afford themselves the best opportunities to succeed in whatever they pursue. It also requires genuinely seeking to find and develop one?s best character traits and talents. Self-respect closely aligns to love of self, without which it is difficult to truly love others.
Respect for others requires each person to do their best to lift up, rather than put down others. In daily life it often looks like being very positive, affirming and encouraging. It also holds others accountable when they are doing what they should not.
We are called as Christians to be stewards, to nurture and care for all of God?s creation. This is the essence of respect for the environment. Students will be given various opportunities to practise this form of respect throughout the year.
Respect for property is simple. If we respect self and others we will treat their property well.

Year 7 Leader of Past oral Care
When respect for property is not followed, it can cause anger, angst and expense. This frequently occurs between friends who take liberties beyond acceptable bounds. Disrespectful behavior includes taking, moving or interfering with another person?s possessions without their request or approval. A recent simple example occurred when friends threw another of their friend?s bag around. This could have been a rather expensive and upsetting game as inside the bag was the student 's new iPad.
RECOGNITION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
The newsletter is potentially a great place to recognise student achievement. Our students, your sons and daughters, are involved in a vast array of pursuits outside of the College. Many are achieving personal bests, gaining awards or competing successfully in their chosen activity/sport. Please take the opportunity to send me an email informing me of the achievement(s) of your son/daughter. I will then endeavour to give recognition of this achievement in the very next newsletter.

The swimming carnival is a great way for students to gather as a whole school where we can embrace the Year 8 theme of "connect". We connect to other year groups and within our own year group. It is a great chance for those talented swimmers to show off their skills, and for those who are not as gifted to support their peers.
I encourage each student to dress in their house colour.

CONGRATULATIONS
It is heartening to see that so many of our Year 9 cohort are willing to give up their time and talents to undertake various roles and areas of leadership within our College. I believe it shows a great deal of character and commitment for students to put themselves forward to lead others within their class or cohort, and our community values their efforts.

As a new school year commences, we have a good opportunity for parents, students and teachers to come together to catch up from last year, and to meet our new students and families in a casual setting. On Tuesday, 5th March we are happy to invite everyone to our Year 9 Parent Breakfast. If you can make it, it will be great to see familiar faces and to welcome new families to our College community. The term is progressing fast already and we are moving headlong into two really important events, our Information Night and the swimming carnival.
The Information Night on Monday, 18th February is for parents to come along to the Theatre at 6.00p.m. to hear some important information on topics such as assessment, ROSA grades and Pastoral Care. It is also an opportunity to meet your child's Pastoral Care teacher. An email has been sent to all parents with a return RSVP requested; can you please attend to this if you haven't already.
Our Junior swimming carnival is the very next day on Tuesday, 19th February. It is a compulsory school day and just happens to be lots of fun. I look forward to getting to know even more students on the day and experiencing the year group in a different environment.
As always we are working hard on the values of honesty, respect and being well presented in our uniforms. Your support in these areas is essential and greatly appreciated.

TEXTILES AND DESIGN
The Textiles room is after your unwanted clothing or textiles items!
This year for Year 7 Technology Mandatory we have a new syllabus and a new project that is focused on sustainability and reducing, reusing and recycling textiles.
Items of particular interest include:
- jeans/denim especially!- t-shirts and business shirts- linen, including pillow cases- dresses- decent sized fabric scraps- almost anything! accepting plain colours and patterns.
We are happy to accept all washed/clean donations large or small.

The new library is now open. We now have a wonderful contemporary learning space that accommodates senior classes, private research, collaborative endeavours and video conferencing facilit ies. The library staff are delighted with the new centre and are very much looking forward to working with students and staff in our revamped library. - Students are allowed to wear their House colours to and from school and are reminded to
wear closed-in footwear and to bring their swimmers, rash shirt, hat, towel and sunscreen. - The carnival commences at 9.15a.m. - all parents are welcome to attend to spectate or are
most welcome to assist on the day. Please email Erin Denham if you would like to assist. - The 100m events are swum during the senior carnival, however, for the junior carnival the
100m events will start prior to the carnival. Students need to be at the pool at 7.45a.m. ready for an 8.00a.m. start. If your child wishes to participate in this event they need to register
online through the school Moodle site/student links/Representative Sport Registrations. - Appropriate swimwear ? the school has a policy on appropriate swimwear for any water
activity. All students are requested to wear a rash shirt to protect them from the sun. Girls are ONLY permitted to wear full piece swimmers or two piece sports swimmers. Triangle bikinis are NOT permitted ? if these are the only swimmers that your child has they will be required to
wear a rash shirt or t-shirt over their swimmers on the day. - There are NO EFTPOS facilit ies available for the canteen on the day.
Finally, the swimming carnivals are a highlight on our school sport calendar. This is a day where students can embrace our house spirit and get involved. All that we ask is that students get involved in either the competitive or novelty events and support the House Leaders to make our carnivals fun
and enjoyable.

BERG SHIELD CRICKETERS QUALIFY FOR SEMI-FINALS FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
The MacKillop College Berg Shield cricket team has reached the semi-finals of the Combined Catholic Colleges competition for the second successive year after defeating St John?s College, Woodlawn in Coffs Harbour last Friday by nine runs.
Batting first in the T20 format, the MacKillop boys started sensationally with the in form duo of captain, Jared Hum phreys, and vice-captain, Vaughan Lick ley, taking the score to 58 without loss after 8 overs. Vaughan was then dismissed for 22 and Tom Nunan and Benjam in St ewar t followed almost immediately, both without troubling the scorer. When Jared was out for 38, with the score at 4/68 in the 11th over, the innings looked precariously placed. Evan Lipovac steadied the ship with an energetic knock of 20 from 16 balls, however when Jack Redfern (1), Jabyn Beddoe (1) and Bede Munro (0) all fell in quick succession, it looked like the team would struggle to bat out their 20 overs. Thankfully Will iam Ar r ighi (4 not out), Hudson Harm er (8) and Jack Jordan (2 not out) sensibly batted the final four overs out and managed to pick up 20 valuable runs for the team, which in the end proved the difference between winning and losing.
At the halfway mark, Woodlawn were confident of chasing down our total of 112. Jared Hum phreys took a wicket with the very first ball of the innings and this set the tone for things to come. Woodlawn lost wickets at regular intervals and at one stage were 7/47 in the 13th over. At this point their number 8 and 9 batsmen combined for a 56 run partnership only to fall 9 runs short of the MacKillop total finishing at 8/103. The bowling display for MacKillop was led by Jared Hum phreys who took 3/19. Spinner Bede Munro was also outstanding, taking 3/23. He could have easily taken another three wickets if some catches were held. Jack Jordan bowled a good line and length to finish with 2/7. Benjam in St ewar t , Evan Lipovac, Tom Nunan and Jordan Huender didn?t manage to take a wicket, but all bowled well. The team plan of bowling full and straight was followed by all of the bowlers and this, together with some excellent field placements by Jared Humphreys, restricted the Woodlawn scoring from the outset. Special mentions need to go to wicketkeeper Hudson Harm er and fielder Luke Townsend for their excellent efforts on the day.
The result means that the team has won the Northern NSW zone of the Berg Shield and will contest the final series against the three other zone champions at Campbelltown on 26th February.
A special thank you must go to parent Craig Huender for his assistance on the day.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR A MACKILLOP COLLEGE SPORT TEAM
In the past students have signed up to trial for a sport by writing their name on a paper list at the sports noticeboard. As of now all registrations for MacKillop College sport teams will be completed by students by logging into the school Moodle page. Go to the student links tab on the left hand side and click on the Representative Sports registrations link. Click on the relevant sport and fill out the google form.
Students will be notified through the morning notices of when to sign up and when trials will occur.

Please note that the following sports are currently open for students to be able to sign up to or register their interest to trial. These sports have been advertised to students through morning notices over the past week.

CCC registrations are now open for a num ber of spor t s in 2019. ENSEMBLE REHEARSALS
All ensemble rehearsals are up and running. Please see the rehearsal schedule for details. It is great to see so many enthusiastic students ready to become vibrant members of our school community and build the musical culture of the College.
CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC GOOGLE CLASSROOM
All members of the co-curricular music ensemble program have signed up to a Google Classroom that will provide important information throughout the year. It is also possible for parents to sign up to this classroom providing you have google accounts. GUITAR CLUB
Guitar Club will not be running in 2019. The director of the group Mr Rob Geaney will be running a performance group later in the term. If you are interested in this group and have not provided your details to Mr Denham or Mr Tom Horder at the ensemble sign up session please contact Mr Geaney directly at [email protected]
ENSEMBLE SHIRT ORDERS
If you are a member of a music ensemble in 2019 you are required to order and purchase a performance shirt. This can be done by providing your details to the music trainee Mr Tom Horder. Orders will be made at the end of next week for Term 1.
SAPSS MARCHING BAND NEWS
On Monday, 18th February at 6.00p.m., there will be a parent meeting held in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) at St Joseph's Regional College for parents and students to discuss all things SAPSS Marching Band. We welcome any existing members and any new interested members to come along and find out more about this semester 's program. If you are unable to attend but require more information please contact Mrs Samantha Adams before the start of March and Mr Robert Denham from March onwards.
