Welcome back to a new school year and we look forward to embarking on a new set of challenges and opportuni es at Bonalbo Central School. We especially welcome our new Kindy and Year 7 students along with new enrolments in other year groups. Staff Changes On behalf of the school community, I’d like to congratulate Mr Trevor Hodges on his appointment as Principal, Nimbin Central School. Un l processes are put in place to appoint a permanent principal to our school, I am the relieving Principal and Mrs Kathryn Taylor is our relieving Deputy Principal. Mrs Taylor brings a wealth of teaching and leadership experience to Bonalbo Central School and both staff and students will benefit greatly from this. Mrs Jan Maslen, Mrs Narelle Gray, and Mrs Lynne Amos have re red a er long and illustrious careers at our school. Mrs Kate Schumacher and Mr John Sadaka are currently on leave and Mr Shaun Flannery has le our school to teach in an area closer to his home. We warmly welcome the following new members to our school:

The following teachers have new roles within the school: Ms Megan O’Meara is responsible for wellbeing across the middle school (Years 5, 6, 7 & 8) as well as con nuing in her role as Learning and Support Teacher (Primary) Mrs Kacey Mar n is responsible for wellbeing across Stages 5 and 6 (Years 9, 10, 11 and 12) and is relieving in the role as Head Teacher (English/HSIE) Mrs Fiona Stubbings is now responsible for Careers, VET and is suppor ng Stage 6 (Years 11 & 12) curriculum ma ers. Students in Stages 5 and 6 who would have approached Mrs Maslen

for voca onal and educa onal support and advice should now see Mrs Stubbings in her office in the library. School Development Day – 27th January On the first day back at school, teachers underwent training regarding “Classroom Strategies for Teaching New Concepts and Reflec on” as part of our first School Development Day for 2017. We were fortunate enough to have Ms Sabreena Taylor, an educa onal consultant based in Sydney, deliver these presenta ons. Staff were provided with teaching resources and ideas for encouraging students to have high expecta ons for their own learning and for encouraging higher order thinking in all classrooms. Throughout the year, staff at Bonalbo Central School will be undergoing professional learning sessions in mee ngs and at School Development Days to ensure that we are able to increase student engagement and maximise the educa onal outcomes of every student. Behaviour Codes and Senior Student Agreements At Bonalbo Central School and at every other NSW Department of Educa on school, students are required to follow the NSW DoE Behaviour Code for Students. We also have the expecta on that all members of our school community uphold the principles of COURAGE, PRESENCE, PATIENCE, HONOUR and CHALLENGE. In the secondary school these expecta ons will be explicitly taught during our morning check‐in. Students who do not comply with this code and its expecta ons should expect that consequences will follow. Stage 6 students and their parents/carers have been asked to sign a senior student agreement and I have spoken to all senior students about our expecta ons. They are expected to be visible leaders of the school in order to access their senior privileges. The 2017 school year has begun smoothly even with a con nua on of the hot weather. We welcome all new students and families to the school and welcome back returning students. A endance Educa on is important and regular a endance at school is essen al for achieving success and increasing career and life opportuni es. When students a end school every day, learning becomes easier and friendships are developed. If a student is absent as li le as 8 days a term, by the end of primary school they will have missed over a year of school! This is a startling fact that we need to work together to ensure does not happen to our students. Of course, there are mes when a endance is not possible (i.e. illness, appointment, urgent family event). Parents/carers are reminded that, prior to or following an absence from school, you must provide the school with a verbal or wri en explana on within 7 days. Lateness is also recorded as a par al absence and so must also be explained. Please either call or use the notes in this newsle er to provide a reason for student absence. Congratula ons on their enthusiasm and organisa on of their teams. It was fantas c to see the many colourful ou its and signs, along with hearing the loud

cheering and support of their swimmers. Thank you and congratula ons to organising staff (Mrs Collis, Mr Frith, Ms Pe y and Ms Gambley) who put together a smooth and successful carnival. Thank you also to all staff who supported them and our students on the day in very hot weather. The atmosphere was extremely posi ve and it was wonderful to see the whole school coming together. A great ini a ve that we hope to con nue. You can read more details from the day later in this newsle er. Uniforms Students and parents/carers are reminded that students are expected to wear appropriate school uniform and footwear every school day. This is important for developing school pride and safety, as we can easily iden fy our students. Please contact the school for uniform informa on and support. Permission Notes As in all schools, Bonalbo Central provides many out‐of‐class ac vi es and extra‐curricular experiences that enhance learning and provide opportuni es for students to represent the school. It is important that all permission notes for excursions or school events are returned to the school as soon as possible a er families receive them. This helps with organisa on and saves me chasing students for permission. We thank you in an cipa on of your support with this. Feedback Throughout the year, the school will be evalua ng various procedures and events. Staff have recently evaluated last year’s Presenta on and CAPA Nights and some daily rou nes. Any changes will be communicated as appropriate. We welcome parent/carer feedback and you are invited to contact the school to give us your thoughts and comments at any me. Welcome back to all our families and a warm welcome to our new families at Bonalbo Central School. We hope you had an enjoyable and safe holiday. It has been a busy start to the term with our first Whole School Swimming Carnival. Change of School Sport Day This year we have changed the day of our sport. Students will now need to wear their sports uniform and joggers on a Friday each week. Along with this they will need a drink bo le of water which they can fill up at school during the day, if needed. Sport for all classes will run in the a ernoon periods. Students will be developing skills and playing three different sports through rota ons.

Kindergarten. It is with great excitement that we have welcomed our Kindergarten students to our school. They have all se led in quickly with enthusiasm and high spirits. The start of the term has seen all of our Kindergarten students be assessed in Best Start; a parent report will be given to parents in the coming weeks. These reports will give examples of some ac vi es that can be completed during everyday ac vi es that can support student learning. Whole School Swimming Carnival We would like to thank all those involved with making our first Whole School Swimming Carnival a success.

We appreciate everyone’s support. Thank you to the parents and P & C who assisted in numerous roles throughout the day. Congratula ons to all our students for par cipa ng. Primary students who qualified to go on to Woodenbong received notes last week. These notes will need to be returned no later than Wednesday 8th February. We wish you all good luck. Deadly Australians On Friday 17th February, our school will have the pleasure of hos ng a traveling educa onal show about Australian Deadly Animals. Students will have the opportunity to learn, hold, and explore creatures that are in our own backyards across Australia. This day is aimed at K‐10. Notes went out last week and need to be returned as soon as possible. Hot Weather With the con nuing hot weather, it is important to make sure we are all staying hydrated. 8 cups of WATER a DAY will: Flush out toxins Help carry nutrients and oxygen to cells Reduce fa gue, headaches and crankiness Improve concentra on Prevent tooth decay and holes in your teeth Improve overall health Thank You Primary Staff This is a pen drawing of the 2017 swimming

Agriculture News Year 7 have harvested some of the summer

vegies that grew through the holidays including:

watermelon, cucumber and beetroot. They are

now preparing and plan ng their own vegies.

Year 9/10 are studying the “Ag in Australia”

topic about the history of agriculture. They will

have an assignment due later in the term.

Primary Industries are studying farm chemicals including: use, storage, mixing, handling and legisla on. The “Ag Team” with new members will be preparing 2 steers for Bonalbo Show and Beef Week.

Design and Technology (Tex les) Year 7 Each Wednesday this semester, students will be involved in designing, sewing and decora ng an apron to wear when they cook breakfasts in Semester 2. Year 8 Each Monday this semester, students will be sewing shorts, pants, a stretch skirt or a bag which they may choose to decorate. In Semester 2 they will be cooking snacks in a Snack A ack unit. Year 9/10 Food Technology Students will cook each Wednesday and need to wear covered shoes, e long hair up and bring an apron, two tea towels and a dishcloth. Some weeks they will also be required to bring a container to take their cooking home in. In Term 1 Cleo, Ally and Lakeisha will be represen ng Bonalbo CWA in the North Coast Division for the 2017 CWA Land Cooking Compe on baking cakes on the 2nd March at Lismore. Students will be learning how to ‘Eat Well, Live Well’. Recipes they will be preparing include breakfast parfait, buns, lasagne and salad, lamb souvlaki and Thai green curry.

Year 11/12 Hospitality Year 12 students will be assessed over the next few weeks for their food service skills as a waiter/waitress. Year 11 will be assis ng Year 12 students to prepare focaccia bread with fillings and frappe drinks. Then they will be preparing a variety of espresso coffees. Each Monday they need to bring their hospitality uniform, covered leather black shoes, two tea towels and a dishcloth.

We now have all sizes of sports shirts in stock. The cost of the shirts is $24 for child and youth sizes and $30 for other sizes. If you require a sports shirt or any other items of our uniform, please see the office staff.

The P & C commenced the year by running a

canteen at last week’s Whole School Swimming

Carnival and I would like to thank Rachel Cousins

The Annual General Mee ng will be held on

Monday 20th March at 3.30pm in the Primary.

BONALBO ARTS FESTIVAL Saturday 11th February Noon – 10pm Sunday 12th February Noon – 4pm

Come along to this FREE community celebration of music, arts, crafts, puppetry and writing. There will be free food,

exhibitions and activities, and a screening of ‘Bonnywood Rising’ at 6pm on the Saturday night in the Community Hall, where many of our local students star. ‘Pet Food’ will be performed on Saturday at 12:15pm and a puppet workshop will run all

day Sunday with a performance at 3pm. There will also be stalls in the park and art and craft for

sale. So come along for a fun and entertaining weekend!
