TERM 1 COMES TO AN END Term 1 has flown by and we’re about to head off on the Easter break. As always there has been plenty of action in term 1 with swimming & athletics carnivals, inter-school tennis & basketball, the Meet and Greet night, BYOD iPad information sessions, School Council elections, inter-school tennis & basketball, a gathering for prep parents, grade 4 Anglesea camp, the Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Parent Helpers sessions, a student leadership conference and of course Bike Ed (a new initiative) and the fete…. there has certainly been plenty happening. Much of that has required significant support from parents, for which we are most grateful. We hope you have the opportunity to take a break and enjoy spending time with your family over the next two weeks and we’ll see you back for the start of term 2 on Tuesday, April 18. There’s plenty to look forward to in term 2, including the Japanese Theme Day, Music on the Mount auditions and workshops, The Story of Buninyong project, a Book Fair, grade 5 Halls Gap camp, inter-house cross country (P-6), in- terschool soccer, football, netball & cross country, 3 Way Conversations and NAPLAN. The weather turned out to be perfect (once the breeze dropped), which was very lucky given rain was about earlier in the week. The students were all very excited on Thursday at school and it was wonderful seeing them have such a good time once 5pm finally came. A number of our external stall holders commented on the good behaviour and manners that our children showed…that’s always nice to hear. Our staff and a large contingent of parent and student helpers did an outstanding job preparing for the fete and running stalls and events on the night. We ought to say well done to our Fundraising Team who did so well leading the way and pulling everything together. It was wonderful to see so many school families and members of the broader community come along to support the fete and have some fun. The financial support received from school families and local businesses was outstanding. On today’s newsletter we acknowledge donations received for the raffles and auctions and in the 1 st newsletter of next term we’ll be in a position to thank others who contributed. Early next term we will be able to announce the profit made from the fete, however early indications would suggest we have made quite a bit more than last time….a profit of approximately $15-16,000 is the expected outcome. Part of this year’s profit is being used to finish off the student toilet project at our Buninyong Campus. A target project for Scotsburn’s share is yet to be confirmed. Thanks again to everyone who supported the fete in any way and helped make the event both a great school community event, but also a successful fundraiser.

There’s plenty to look forward to in term 2, including the

be having a Mothers’ Day Stall and a Movie Night.

FETE

What a great team effort on a number of fronts that resulted in a fantastic fete on Thursday night.

On today’s newsletter we acknowledge donations received for the raffles and auctions and in the 1st newsletter of next term we’ll be in a position to thank others who contributed.

GLEN PEARSALL PD

On Friday the 24th of March we were fortunate enough to have Glen Pearsall (Behaviour Management Expert) come and present to our school staff. We had staff from a variety of other schools present and all were extremely impressed with what he had to say. Glen was incredibly impressed with our school, how simple and clear our expectations are and how positive our staff are (even after a massive fete the night before). The strategies we all learned on the day were outstanding and will be used to further enhance student learning at Buninyong Primary School.

FETE & FUNDRAISERS

Just wanted to say well done to everyone for an amazing FETE. I was truly blown

away with the turn out, the community support and how much was on offer.

Hopefully the money we raised can further improve our great school and allow

our kids to take even more ownership of the community.

PLAYGROUND PROJECT

Over the past couple of months we have been

developing the area between the chook shed and

green garden shed at our Buninyong Campus.

This is gradually being transformed from an

underutilised steep slope, to a terraced area that

will be full of interest for the kids. We’re hoping

this work will be completed by the end of term 2.

Pick Ups and Drop Offs

Please be patient and careful when doing the daily drop off or pick up. With so many students and

families, it’s going to be busy at peak times, but that doesn’t last long. We are actually lucky to have a

few different drop off and pick up areas, so it could be a lot worse. So please take your time and

remember that accidents easily happen in busy periods around schools and sometimes the

consequences are disastrous.

At a recent PLP meeting we had a good chat about pick up time in particular. A number of parents

talked about how they park a street or 2 away where they can easily get a park, even between 3:20

and 3:30pm. Then they get the kids to take a leisurely stroll to them…..what a good idea. We

understand this wouldn’t work for everyone, but would be a perfect way for many families to avoid the

crush.

CHOOKS GETTING PLENTY OF LOVE

It has been really nice to see how much the students are enjoying the chickens at our Buninyong

Campus. Most days we find some time to open up the chook yard and within minutes of unlocking the

gate there is always a group of students inside and saying hello to the chooks. Thankfully the

chickens don’t seem traumatised by the experience and are getting quite used to being handled.

日本語

Nihongo (Japanese) News

FETE Thanks to all the helpers and volunteers. Japanese goods were flying off the shelf, and some

sold out very early in the night. We took some orders to avoid disappointment, these are

now available to collect from the Japanese room. Please bring your $4 and see Mrs Sullivan.

The only things left to sell are some fans (festival design, sushi, sumo & samurai—x12 in total);

magnets (x8); sushi keyrings (x10); kokeshi keyrings (x5) and origami paper (x20 assorted

designs). If you wish to purchase one of these, bring $4 this week and come to the Japanese

room. All items that are left will be going to the market on Thursday lunchtime, including

ordered items that have not been collected.

日本語 Fact or Fiction?

Will return with a new question in term 2!

まるMARU BATSUばつ (True/Yes/Fact) (False/No/Fiction)

Write your answer (o x) on a piece of paper, along with your name and grade and put in the entry box at the office. You may only enter

once.

WINNER: おめでとう!Omedetou! Congratulations! Well done to Brooke B in 5MD who answered (maru) and knew that Hello Kitty DOES have a twin sister. Her name is Mimi. The only difference is that Mimi wears a ribbon on her right ear so people can tell Mimi and Kitty apart.

Japanese Site Origami Club http://en.origami-club.com/

Looking for something to do over the holidays? Try origami! This is a great site with hundreds of origami to make, with easy to follow instructions (diagram or animations).

JAPANESE NIHON MATSURI IS COMING!

Our annual Japanese Festival

Day (Nihon Matsuri) will be

held on FRIDAY 5th May

(week 3 of next term). We

will have visiting performers,

workshops, a special lunch

opportunity and lots of cultural activities. As

per previous years, students will be

encouraged to dress in a Japanese inspired

outfit or come dressed in red & white. Start

thinking! Any parents able to assist on the

day, especially with the lunch, please let

Narelle know.

Book Fair is coming next Term Our April Book Fair commences on

Monday 24th April

and will go through to

Friday 28th April

Our Book Fair will be upon us early next term and we are looking forward to seeing many new books and hopefully bumper sales. Our school community has always supported our Book Fairs and we are so very grateful for this as it has allowed us to purchase new shelving and many many new books. I am always on the lookout for new series which the children love and we are very fortunate that our students are prolific readers and love coming to the library.

The week prior to the Book Fair we will be

running a raffle, with first prize being any

one item from the Book Fair regardless of

cost. We would like to donate all proceeds of

this raffle to the Mphatso Foundation. As you know our children are doing an

amazing job with their 5 cent donations and we would like to add as much as we

can to this fund. Much as we would like to give them books, it is far more

practical to give money.

We will have the Book Fair open for classes to browse, and make out their Wish

List, from Wednesday 19th April. This will also give them a chance to check out

what they would like if you/they decide to purchase a raffle ticket.

Tickets will be available in the Library and I will have my Library Team go round to

each classroom to see if anyone wishes to purchase one.

Tickets will be $1.00 each

Raffle Drawn on Wednesday 26th April

District Athletics:

A huge congratulations to the amazing team that represented Buninyong Primary

School at the District Athletics last Wednesday! Not only did we bring home a vast

array of ribbons but demonstrated wonderful team spirit and enthusiasm.

Results will be passed on as soon as they are received. Further details on those

progressing through to the next round will be passed on as soon as they are received.

At the end of the day, Buninyong Primary School convincingly won the Most Points

shield (currently hanging proudly in our hall) and came second to Haddon Primary

School in the Average Points shield.

A special thanks needs to be made to Simon Jinx and his team for running a wonderful

day, our wonderful parent helpers (Alison Richardson and Natasha Adams), terrific

Grade 4, 5 and 6 teachers who freed up their staff to help out on the day and, of

course, our star athletes on the track and field. You’re all amazing!

Regional Swimming:

Our team looked like torpedos in the water last Friday as they took part in the

Regional Swimming Competition at the Ballarat Aquatic Centre. All swimmers

did an amazing job and it is quite obvious the number of hours that some of our

students (and families) are putting in the pool during early mornings and

afternoon to participate to such a high standard.

All competitors must be congratulated. The following students will now be going

through to State Finals at MSAC on 26 April, 2017:

Taylor Mason – 50m Breaststroke

Lucy Richardson – 50m Breaststroke and 50m Butterfly

Jazmine Vincent-Durow – 50m Butterfly and 50m Backstroke

BUNINYONG STUDENTS IN THE SPORT SPOTLIGHT

We are looking for any sporting achievements by our current and past students (within school or the community) so if you are aware of any stories that are worthy of note, please email them to Ms Morris so we can celebrate together.

Greater Western Region Lawn Bowls:

Good luck to our Lawn Bowls team who will be competing this Thursday at the Greater

Western Region Lawn Bowls competition. Many thanks to the continued support of

David Draffin and the team at the Buninyong Bowls Club and to Mr Young for supporting

the team on the day.

Interhouse Athletics Results:

The top 10 competitors for each event and age group can now be viewed here. The final

house results and age group champions will be announced at the whole school assembly

on 31 March, 2017. Ribbons for the 100m, 200m and hurdles will be distributed at this

point too.

Netball Teams:

Netball training will run again at lunchtime this Thursday. Many thanks to Anastasia

Anderson for running the session for the players. We are able to confirm that there will

be Term 2 Tuesday afternoon school’s competition that we would love to put a team (or

more) in for. We are currently confirming the number of coaches available and this, as

well as the student interest level, will determine how many are entered in. We will be

requiring up front commitment to the term through full payment by the end of the week.

We would like to include all interested players (regardless of ability) so if you are

interested in participating in this competition, please click here for the information form.

If you have expressed an interest in coaching a team and have not received an email

from me, can you please get back in touch with me. Any other adult who is interested in

helping out with coaching , please let me know.

Grade three students will be selling fresh eggs from our very own chooks!

When: Wednesday afternoon

Where: Front of the school.

Price: $3 for half a dozen.

First in, best dressed.

Hi my name is Adam Scibilia andI am in 4AC. I have been learning to sail since January this

year. I sail with Stawell Yacht Club at Lake Fyans. On the weekend I was picked to sail

on Albert Park Lake as part of the entertainment at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix. On

Saturday I sailed in obstacle races on the Lake as the Formula One practice races were on.

On Sunday I sailed in sprint races around the Lake during the main Formula One race. I

won two medals, one was for being part of a winning team in the obstacle races, the other

medal was for points achieved in the sprint races. It was amazing to be part of the Grand

Prix and I hope to be picked again next year. If you watched the Grand Prix and saw

some little boats, I was one of them.
