Definitions
ONT – Optical Network Termination. The NE that is normally the CPE equipment, is normally the interface for Subscriber equipment and is usually installed in a wiring closet. Also called Optical Network Unit (ONU)
System – A System encompasses a single OLT, all the modules provisioned in the OLT, the PONs connected to the OLT, all the ONTs connected to the PONs and all the cards provisioned in the ONTs
NIM Card – Network Interface Module. A card that is installed in the OLT and carries Subscriber traffic from the PON to the metro/core network. A NIM Card can be TDM (SONET or SDH) or ATM

Definitions
SIM Card – Service Interface Module. A card that is installed in the ONT and is the interface to the Subscriber equipment. A SIM card can be TDM (DS1 or E1), Ethernet, ATM, Video or Telemetry
Ranging – The process by which the OLT communicates with the ONT to determine the ONTs distance from the OLT. The purpose is determine the ONTs relative traffic position in the PONs Upstream traffic
Subscriber – A company that connects their equipment to a SIM card for the purpose of providing telecommunications support for their company
