Letter from the Executive Director

With the 2017–2018 recruiting year

underway, it’s my pleasure to share this

2017 MBA Summary Employment Report,

highlighting the employment outcomes

of our recent MBA graduates and

summer intern candidates.

The level of excitement on campus

continues to grow as the construction of

our new 315,000-square-foot facility,

the David A. Tepper Quadrangle, nears

completion. This transformative project

will promote strategic interaction and

collaboration across the University,

effectively placing the Tepper School

of Business at the center of innovation,

creativity and entrepreneurship at

Carnegie Mellon.

The Career Opportunities Center (COC) also

continues to evolve in the face of changes

impacting our students’ career interests.

Our students continue to find significant

success in the technology industry

(43% of the Class of 2017 accepted jobs

in tech), while others continue to launch

successful careers in other areas, including

consulting, biopharma/healthcare, financial

services and in leadership development

programs across functions and industries.

I’m also pleased to share that 58% of

our women MBAs in the Class of 2017

accepted jobs in the technology industry,

which represents a new record and

supports our goal of preparing outstanding

next-generation leaders at the intersection

business and technology.

The COC Team and I hope you will

enjoy reviewing this 2017 Employment

Report as well as our website,

tepper.cmu.edu/recruit@tepper.

As a valued recruiting partner, you can

be assured that we remain committed

to providing you with a world-class

recruiting experience!

Sincerely,

Stephen Rakas Executive Director Career Opportunities Center Masters Programs

The Tepper School MBA program structures the two-year MBA coursework differently than many other business schools. Our curriculum emphasizes mastery of management fundamentals in year one, prior to the selection of electives. We are unapologetic about resisting the trend of offering optional electives immediately upon students’ arrival. Rather, our students invest much of their first three mini-semesters mastering core business fundamentals such as economics, finance, operations, quantitative analysis and organizational behavior.

It’s this integrated view of business that leads to better decision-making, and better prepares students to tackle real-world problems.

Tepper MBAs have advanced exposure to both leadership and analytics — providing a high-performance career advantage. The coursework for the Full-Time, Part-Time Online Hybrid and Part-Time On-Campus MBA begins with an emphasis on the core base of management skills and business drivers. Unlike many MBA programs, the Tepper School sequences core and elective coursework in order to ensure students have deep understanding and preparation.

In the first year (Full-Time) and first half of the program (Part-Time), the MBA curriculum concentrates on those engines that influence business results. In year two and the second half of the program, students transition into classes, project courses and team-based capstones that elevate practical application. Students are given an impressive range of electives and leadership options that accelerate learning and career opportunities.

CONCENTRATIONS

Choosing from approximately 10 concentrations, most students identify three to five concentrations. These courses build upon the preparation from core coursework as well as the summer internship experience.

MBA TRACKS MBA Tracks — which represent a configuration of specific electives within the business school and/or across the Carnegie Mellon campus — provide an opportunity for in-depth study in a particular field or career path.

MBA CAPSTONE COURSES

Capstones often reflect immersive, experiential coursework in which students and professors work alongside corporations and recruiters on real-world consulting assignments.

GLOBAL STUDY

The small size and international focus of our program makes global study an appealing option. The two primary capstone treks include the European Study Abroad — eight weeks in Germany, partnering with the WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management in Koblenz — and the Asia Study Abroad — eight weeks at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s CUHK Business School. In addition, student clubs organize non-credit student treks during spring break; in recent years, these treks have included travel to Latin America, China, Japan, Dubai and Qatar (with visits to the Carnegie Mellon campus in Doha) and Israel.
