Respected Sir/Madam,

The Young Economist Students’ Meet (YESM) is an initiative pioneered by the students of the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University. The basic objective of the meet is to bring together on a common platform the students and scholars of Economics, thereby offering opportunities to young minds to know and grow through interaction with each other and with the stalwarts of the ield.

The students of the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University propose to organize the 7th Annual The students of the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University propose to organize the 7th Annual Inter-Institutional Young Economist Students’ Meet on the 19th and 20th of December 2013 on the theme of “GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL SECTOR- AN INDIAN PERSPECTIVE”.

We would therefore like to ask for your support by way of participation of students from your esteemed institution. A list of events with their tentative schedule, their rules and regulations and the themes and topics for YESM 2014 are therefore enclosed herewith for your perusal and response.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

OFF-STAGE EVENTS:

(Cross-institution participation is not allowed in any of the off-stage events.)

1. QUESTONOMICS (Levels Race):

A new event, that promises to be fun, entertaining and educative – all at the same time!

This event is open only to undergraduate students.

Only one team comprising three members from each institution can participate in

this event.

The event consists of 5 levels. The teams need to clear each level to proceed to the

next one.

The levels consists of word puzzles, picture puzzles, logic based questions, etc.

The first three teams to clear all the levels will be awarded accordingly.

The decisions of the moderators/organisers will be final and binding in all respect.

2. WRITE ON (Essay Writing):

This event is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Articles should be written on white A4 sized sheets with the theme of the meet in

mind. Word limit is 1000.

Two hard copies and one soft copy of the essay should be submitted via the

college representatives or via speed post or e-mail to our official id –

[email protected] by 30th November.

The first page should contain the TITLE, NAME OF THE AUTHOR, CONTACT

INFORMATION AND NAME OF THE INSTITUTION.

All essays will be published on the facebook page and selected essays will be

published in the YESM 2014 magazine. Winning essays will be announced during

the prize distribution ceremony.

3. PICTURESQUE:

Show off your creative skills in designing out-of-the-ordinary advertisement posters, in

this fresh new event.

Two teams, each comprising two members, from each institution can participate in

this event.

Descriptions of four different products/services will be given. Each team will have

to select one of these alternatives, and design an advertisement for it, along with

an innovative name for the product.

Only the paper will be provided to the teams. They need to carry their own pens,

pencils, colours and any other stationery that they may require.

Credit will be given for creativity, originality and novelty.

The most important criteria however is the amount of sales it is likely to generate.

The decisions of the moderators/supervisors will be final and binding in all respect.

4. PARTNER’S DILEMMA:

A new event – a quiz based on game theory – that will test your knowledge of both the

subject and your partner too.

This event is open to undergraduate students.

A maximum of 2 teams can participate from each institution. Each team will consist

of two members from the same institution.

A set of questions will be given to all participants. Participants will get no more

than 30 minutes to answer the questions.

The two members of every team will be seated separately and will be given the

same set of questions. Points will be awarded to the teams depending on the

performance of both the team members.

Questions will be based on general knowledge related to any sphere of finance or

economics.

Cell phones will be requested to be switched off. Any attempt at communication

with team member during the event will lead to disqualification of the team.

The decisions of the moderators/organisers will be final and binding in all respect.

ONSTAGE EVENTS:

1. PAPER TRAIL (Paper Presentation):

The showcase event of the YESM and the most awaited one.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate students can participate in this event.

The research papers should be based on one of the given topics. Papers must be

entirely original. References must be listed at the end of the document.

Papers can be written either individually or in a group comprising of not more than

FOUR members. Mixed teams (of different institutions) are allowed.

3 hard copies of each paper have to be submitted via the college representatives

or via speed post or soft copy e-mailed to Jt. Convenors at [email protected] by

December, 2013.

The teams selected for the finals will have to send a soft copy of the paper 2 days

before the final event (if not sent already).

Author(s) of papers selected will be informed over the phone by December, 2013.

Hard copies should be on white A4 sized sheets. The word limit is approximately

4000.

The cover or first page should contain the TITLE, NAME AND CONTACT DETAILS OF

THE AUTHOR(S) & THE NAME OF THE INSTITUTION.

Papers will be evaluated by a panel of judges and will be assessed on the basis of

relevance, reasoning, originality and data support.

There is no limit to the number of papers that can be sent from any particular

institution but a maximum of 3 papers (including mixed teams) can be selected for

the final round from any particular institution.

A total of 6 papers will be selected for the final round.

If selected, the author(s) will be invited to deliver a Power Point Presentation on

the day of the event by 10:30am sharp. All presentations have to be made in Office

2007.

The presentation will be divided into 2 parts: 10 minutes for the presentation

followed by a short question-answer session with the panel of judges present at

the meet.

There will be a warning bell that will ring once after 8 minutes and twice after 10

minutes, after which the presentation has to end. Exceeding the time limit will

result in deduction of marks.

2. POLEMIC (Debate):

After an overwhelming response in the last 3 editions, we bring back this event this year

as well. It is time to gear up and sharpen your rapiers for the battle of words and wit!

This event is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Students will participate in teams of 2 - one speaking for the motion, one against

the motion.

Any number of teams from each institution can participate but a maximum of 2

teams (mixed teams allowed for students from institutions other than J.U.) will be

selected from each institution.

There will be a preliminary round held in December, 2013.

The motion(s) for the preliminary round will be announced at the Students’

Representative Meeting.

Each speaker will be allotted 3 minutes in the preliminary round.

After each speaker has finished, he/she will have to face a question each from the

participants and the judge(s) present.

A total of 6 teams will be selected for the finals based on the aggregate points

earned by the two speakers in the preliminary round.

The motion for the finals will be announced to the participants the day before.

Each speaker will be allotted 4 minutes in the finals. There will be a warning bell

that will ring once after 3 minutes and twice after 1 minute, after which the

speaker will have to stop. Else they will be penalised.

After each speaker has had a chance to speak, he/she will be open to questions

from the opponents, the judges, and the audience for 1 minute.

Speakers will be judged on relevance, clarity of exposition, erudition and

vocabulary and any other criteria that the judges may find appropriate.

3. PROFFING IT (Mock Classroom): (Only for Undergraduate Students) A platform for budding teachers. They say that the best judge of a teacher is his student. As far as this event is concerned, that could not be more true.

There will be a preliminary round in December, 2013. There is no limit on the

number of participants from any particular institution but a maximum of 3 from

each institution will be chosen for the finals.

Each participant will be given 2 topics in advance – one on macroeconomics & one

on microeconomics. The participant has to choose one topic and deliver a lecture

on the same.

Topics will be allotted at the Students’ Representative Meeting.

Each participant will be allotted 6 minutes in the preliminary round and 12 minutes

in the finals to complete the lesson, after which he/she will be asked questions for

3 mins, based on what has been taught, by the judge(s): the mock student(s).

A total of 6 participants will be selected for the final round.

A blackboard and chalk will be provided during the preliminaries and a white board

and marker in the finals.

Finalists are each required to bring one student from their institution as Mock

Student.

4. ANALYZE THIS! :

An event that will prove to be a gruelling test of your abilities of reasoning and intuition,

and your knowledge of economics per se along with on the spot management skills.

3 member teams. No mixed teams allowed.

The preliminary round will be a written round and will be held in December, 2013.

A college can send any number of teams in the preliminaries but only the one

scoring the highest will be selected.

Each team will be given a set of questions which they will get 30 minutes to

answer.

Questions will be based on the undergraduate economics syllabi of JU and CU

Answers should be brief, to the point and should reflect complete understanding

of the question on the part of the participants.

Clarifications about the questions will not be entertained during the event.

Answers will be corrected by a panel of professors.

The 6 teams scoring the highest points will make to the stage for the final round.

The 6 finalists will be allocated 4 core topics, viz: Core Microeconomics, Core

Macroeconomics, Development Economics and Mixed Bag, by means of a lottery,

on which they will face questions from a panel of judges. Not more than 2 teams

will be given the same topic.

The teams will be given questions, an hour before the event. Outside contact,

however, is not allowed during this period.

Each team will get 8 minutes to present their analysis on stage in front of the

judges which will be followed by a 2 minutes question answer session.

Participants will get no more than 10 minutes to answer the question and any

follow up questions that may be asked by the judges.

Teams will be provided with a white board on stage, just in case if they need it for

providing a better explanation.

5. ECOWHIZZ (Quiz):

Teams will comprise of two members from the same or different institutions.

There is no limit on the number of participants from any particular institution. But

a maximum of 3 teams from any institution will be selected for the final round.

Preliminaries will be held just before the event and total of 8 teams will be selected

for the finals. Questions will be based on general knowledge related to any sphere

of business or economics.

TO REGISTER FOR ANY EVENT:

Each participant/ group of participants must send in an e-mail to [email protected]

with subject “Registration for (name of event)”.The participant’s names, their

institution, year of study and contact number must be mentioned. Providing the link to

their facebook profiles is also encouraged for easier communication.
