Tennessee vs. Kentucky Tennessee leads the all-time series against Ken-

tucky 150-128, including a 52-33 mark in Knoxville. The Wildcats enter the weekend ranked No. 2

as the only undefeated team in the nation at 22-0. They swept two-time defending national cham-pion South Carolina in Lexington last weekend and picked up a midweek victory at Cincinnati on Wednesday. This weekend will pit brothers Nick and Michael Williams

against each other for the second time in two years. A soph-omore right-handed pitcher for the Vols, Nick struck out Mi-chael, a senior catcher for the Wildcats, in a faceoff in Lexington last year. Both attended Farragut HS in Knoxville.

Tennessee Tidbits... Tennessee currently ranks 10th in the nation with 38 bat-

ters having reached on a hit by pitch. Freshman Jared Allen leads the way, having taken eight doses, which ranks 31st in the nation individually. Senior Davis Morgan paced the Vols offensively last week,

going 6-for-11 (.545) during Tennessee’s SEC-opening series at No. 19 Georgia. After recording just one hit in February, the Overland Park, Kansas, native has taken off in March, hitting .452 with seven RBIs through his first 11 games of the month to up his batting average to a team-leading .341 on the season. Sophomore Nick Williams made the first start of his col-

legiate career at No. 19 Georgia on Sunday and passed the test with flying colors, firing six shutout innings while allowing just two hits and four baserunners total, none of which advanced past first base, to lead the Vols to a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs.

Requests for credentials should be made by calling Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron Harris at least one day in advance of each home game or series. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations Office will be left at the ticket will call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Postgame InterviewsTennessee head coach Dave Serrano is available to meet

any working member of the media following the game on the field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Media are asked to conduct player interviews on the field, and media members are not permitted in the clubhouse area.

Interviews with visiting team members also may be done on the field, subject to the policy of the visiting team’s media relations representative.

PhotographersMedia credentials are required for all photographers and

television media. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations office will be left at the ticket will-call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Photo decks are located atop the stairwells behind the first- and third-baselines. There are also photo field-level photo wells at the far end of each dugout. Both still and television photographers are welcome to shoot from these spots. Television crews are welcome to film from the mezzanine level underneath the press box.

The Press BoxThe Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box is for working

members of the media only. YEAR-BY-YEAR COACHING RECORD

Following a nationwide search, Dave Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program. A former UT assistant, he was welcomed back to the Big Orange fam-ily on June 15, 2011.

A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 11 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano arrives at Rocky Top with a career record of 289-139-1 (.675) in seven seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year at the helm of the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four campaigns with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009.

Serrano, 46, returns to the site of his first Division I job, as he served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer, as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97-36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995.

Serrano recently finished his fourth season as the head coach at Cal State Fullerton, where he earned Big West Coach of the Year honors for the second season in a row after leading the Titans to their 20th consecutive NCAA Tourna-ment appearance. He previously claimed Baseball America National Coach of the Year accolades after guiding UC Irvine to the first College World Series appearance in program history in 2007.

During his 17 seasons at the Division I level, Serrano has posted an impec-cable track record that includes continuous top 25 recruiting classes and 16 postseason bids. He has also tutored 161 draft picks, including seven first-round selections, dating back to the start of his coaching career at Cerritos College in 1988, a total of 23 of which have reached the Major League level.

Serrano graduated from Cerritos High School in 1982 and played two seasons at Cerritos College. In 1985, he went 12-1 and earned junior college All-American honors while helping the Falcons to a 39-5 record en route to the state championship. Serrano then pitched for Augie Garrido’s 1986 Cal State Fullerton squad, posting a 3-4 record with one save in 15 appearances.

In 2010, Serrano represented his country for the first time in his career, serv-ing as the pitching coach for Bill Kinneberg’s USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He helped coach the team, which included Titan pupils Nick Ramirez and Noe Ramirez, to a V FISU Championship silver medal in Tokyo, Japan. Serrano has coached 19 players that have starred for USA Baseball National Teams, including Helton, Dickey and Augie Ojeda from Tennessee.

Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003) and was born on June 28, 1964, in Torrence, Calif. He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zachary and Parker.

Have a Month Buddy After going just 1-for-13 in the month of Feb-

ruary, senior Davis Morgan has found another gear offensively, as he is hitting .452 (14-for-31) in March. Since the turn of the calendar, Morgan has hit

safely in 10 of 11 games, recording seven RBIs. He is also hitting .538 (7-for-13) with runners on base, in-cluding a .571 mark (4-for-7) with runners in scoring position and is 8-for-14 (.571) with two outs.

Godley Off to Hot Start After spending his entire first year as a Vol in the

bullpen, junior Zack Godley has quickly adjusted to his new role in the starting rotation. In his first four

starts, he was 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA, 23 strikeouts in 25.0 IP and held opposing hitters to a .193 batting average. Godley was extremely impressive in outings

against No. 16 Texas and ULM, going 7.0 innings to lead the Vols to a 5-4 win over the Longhorns on March 3, before coming back with a career-high 8.0 shutout frames against ULM on March 9, allowing just three hits and striking out 10.

300 and Counting... Tennessee skipper Dave Serrano picked up his

300th career win and first SEC victory in the Vols’ last contest as they shut out No. 19 Georgia, 3-0, in Ath-ens. Serrano’s lifetime record now stands at 300-147-1 (.670) in eight seasons as a Division I head coach.

Vols Return to Houston College Classic Tennessee made its third appearance in the

Houston College Classic when it made the trek to the Lone Star State, March 2-4. The Vols dropped a 7-4 decision to Houston on the first day before bounc-ing back with an impressive, 5-4, triumph over No. 16 Texas on Saturday. UT then fell to Rice, 11-1, in the final game of the weekend. Senior shortstop Zach Osborne was named to the all-tournament team. The event was held at the home of the Houston Astros, Minute Maid Park. The Vols previously participated in the event in both 2005 and 2008.

Vols Hook Horns Deep in Heart of Texas Led by a career-high seven strong innings on

the mound from Zack Godley, Tennessee defeated No. 16 Texas, 5-4, at Minute Maid Park in the Hous-ton College Classic on March 3. The win marked UT’s first over a ranked squad

since it swept a doubleheader from then No. 15 Vanderbilt in Knoxville on April 10, 2010.

Pupil Takes Down the Teacher When the Vols defeated No. 16 Texas, 5-4, at the

Houston College Classic on March 3, it marked Dave Serrano’s third career victory, first at Tennessee, over his former head coach Augie Garrido. Serrano made 15 appearances as part of Garrido’s pitching staff at Cal State Fullerton in 1986. En route to the program’s first College World Se-

ries berth, Serrano’s UC-Irvine squad also defeated Texas twice in the Round Rock Regional in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

Roof Over UT’s Head In the 103-year history of the Tennessee base-

ball program, the Vols have played 22 games in domes or stadiums with retractable roofs, posting a 12-10 record in those contests. UT is 4-3 in the Kingdome, playing in the College

Baseball Classic in Seattle, Wash., in 1992 and 1994. The Vols played in the Hormel Foods Classic

in the Metrodome in 1996 and 2002, going 5-1 in games played in the Minneapolis, Minn., venue. Including its three games this season, Tennes-

see is 3-6 at Minute Maid Park with a pair of wins over Texas and and another over Oklahoma State.

It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint The Vols took that saying a little too literally on

Tuesday, Feb. 21, when they played a 13-inning, four hour, 48-minute contest, the longest in school his-tory, against Western Kentucky. In that game, UT was down to its last strike on

two occasions, rallying from a run down in both the ninth and 11th innings. The game broke the previous school record of

four hours, 30 minutes set against Morehead State on Feb. 26, 1989. The 13-inning game was the longest (by in-

nings) for the Vols since it played 13 against Arkan-sas on May 26, 2004, in the SEC Tournament.

Steckenrider Named SEC POTW Junior Drew Steckenrider got the season off to

a scalding start, earning the first SEC Player of the Week honor of the season. Hitting out of the cleanup spot, the 6-5 switch-

hitting junior reached base 11 times in 14 plate ap-pearances, going 5-for-8 (.625) with a pair of doubles and his second career home run. He also served as the team’s Opening Day starter, picking up the win after allowing just two hits and no runs and striking out two in his pre-determined four innings of work.

Vols Unveil New Unis Tennessee unveiled a new set of uniforms de-

signed to create more of a traditional look for the Vols when they hit the field this season.

“It brings back a little bit of history to UT baseball and I think it gives us a sharp look,” Serrano said.

In addition to the team’s black batting practice top, Tennessee will also have separate orange and white tops with black piping and script Vols across the chest, as well as a traditional gray road uniform. The Big Orange will have their choice of plain white or pinstripe pants and will wear a black hat with an orange bill and an orange power T.

All the New Faces In addition to an entirely new coaching staff,

the Vols have also welcomed a grand total of 18 newcomers to the squad as well. The revamped UT roster actually features more new players than re-turning (16). The group of first-year Vols is comprised of 13 true

freshmen, four junior college players and one transfer from a four-year school. There are four outfielders, five infielders, one catcher and eight pitchers, including six right-handers and two southpaws.

Vols Not Fazed by SEC Coaches Poll The Southeastern Conference released its annu-

al preseason coaches’ poll with Tennessee projected to finish sixth in the Eastern Division. While not the most ideal place to start the season, Serrano and his staff just see it as another opportunity and another challenge to overcome.

“We want to prove it on the field,” Serrano said. “You look at all the polls around the country, the Baseball America’s and all that, that’s someone’s opinion. The game is still played on the field. We get that opportunity 30 times in the SEC and 55 times over the course of the year. My approach and my coaching staff’s approach this year is every day that we suit up in a uniform, we get the opportunity to be the best team on the field that day.

Serrano to Coach USA Collegiate Na-tional Team Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano will don

the red, white and blue for the second time in his ca-reer this summer when he will serve as the manager of the 2012 Team USA Collegiate National Team. He previously served as the team’s pitching coach in 2010. Joining Serrano on the 2012 Collegiate National

Team staff will be Oregon head coach George Hor-ton, Loyola Marymount head coach Jason Gill and Grand Canyon head coach Andy Stankiewicz.

The squad is set to travel to Cuba for a five-game series against its national team, July 5-9, before heading to The Netherlands for Honkbal Week in Haarlem, July 13-22.

Renovations Continue at Lindsey Nel-son Stadium Tennessee fans will notice a number of changes

to Lindsey Nelson Stadium when they return for the first time in 2012. The most noticeable will be the new black padded wall in the outfield designed to provide more protection for players and create a cleaner, more simple look. In conjunction, the bat-ter’s eye has been painted black as well. Another ad-dition at LNS is the new playground on top of the batting cages down the right-field line for young Vol fans to enjoy during the game.

Johnson Sets Example for Maddox Tennessee freshman second baseman Will Mad-

dox will look to follow the example set this fall by a fellow first-year Vol and Gainesville High School

graduate, A.J. Johnson. Maddox’s former prep classmate was named a freshman All-American by five different publications, including the Football Writers Association of America, Yahoo! Sports, Phil Steele, The Sporting News and FoxSports, after racking up 80 tackles for the Vol football team as its starting weakside linebacker.

Woody Completes Second Tour in Italy For the second time in as many summers, Ten-

nessee baseball athletic trainer Jeff Wood traveled to Italy to assist in the Major League Baseball Acad-emy.

The 12-year Vol veteran ventured to Tierrenia on the country’s northwestern Mediterranean coast, near Pisa, where the Italian Olympic Training Center is located. The academy brought together promis-ing European and, in some cases, African baseball players, ages 15-19, for the best in U.S. major league coaching and instruction.
