Greetings:
I am pleased to share the 2011-12 Foundation Annual Report with you. This publication recognizes all who have so generously supported Tennessee State University over the past year. You will find stories that celebrate the philanthropic spirit of our benefactors, as well as highlights of the financial status of the Foundation’s resources.
In 2012, we celebrated 100 years of this great institution, and it was a remarkable year. It is through the support of alumni, corporations, foundations and friends that the legacy continues. Private giving to the Foundation increased 62 percent over the previous year, and the Foundation issued more than $947,000 in student scholarships and $900,000 in programmatic support to the University.
Thank you for sharing your resources with the University and tomorrow’s leaders. Your generosity will help TSU remain a place that provides opportunities for thousands of students to “Think. Work. Serve.” I hope the Tennessee State University Foundation, this great University and its talented students can continue to count on you as we work hard together to sustain the legacy.
On behalf of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and staff, we are deeply grateful for your support. We will continue to be good stewards of the funds you have entrusted to us.
Sincerely,
Melvin Malone, Esq.Chairman

For Charles and Pamela Murray Curry, the road to Tennessee State University came from the institution’s reputation and their personal desires to move away from the familiarity of home.
Charles, whose two bothers attended college in Alabama, wanted out of the state. Growing up in Bessemer was a tumultuous time in the nation for race relations, and leaving to experience a new environment was just what Charles felt he needed.
Like Charles, Pam, a native of Ohio, wanted to leave home. She said her father wanted her to go to the University of Cincinnati to help integrate the school, but the stories she had heard from other relatives gave TSU a familial feel.
As the oldest of five siblings, Pam discovered how tough it was paying for a college education. While a student, she almost had to go home because the family finances were simply not there.
“I loved Mr. [Homer] Wheaton because he made the financial aid process so easy for
me,” she said. “I came from a large family and money was tight. Mr. Wheaton one day told my father, if you will allow her to stay, I will make sure she has the finances to finish this great university.
“Without Mr. Wheaton reaching out to me and without the community’s support, it would not have been possible for me to go to TSU,” she continued.
Pam, a social work major, earned her TSU degree in 1972. Her husband Charles, a zoology major, earned his degree in 1970.
The college sweethearts, who married six years after Pam earned her degree, celebrate 37 years of marriage, and are among the university’s biggest supporters. The couple have been members of the prestigious President’s Society since its inception. They say the automatic deposit that comes from their account each month is never missed.
“Sometimes the only time I think about it is when I look at my account,” Charles said. “It’s not taxing. We like to do it because it’s a way to help the university
grow and it helps students. We need to help those who are bright and striving to be better.”
In addition to financial resources, Charles and Pamela also give of their time. Charles remains active with his fra-ternity, Omega Psi Phi, and participated in the Rho Psi Chapter’s Project 2000, a scholarship endowment raising more than $100,000. He was also instrumen-tal in helping to re-establish the Tennes-see State University National Alumni Association’s Huntsville Chapter in 1999, serving as an officer at both the local and national levels. Pam is a member of the TSU Women’s Center Advisory Board, and remains active in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Together, they have encour-aged dozens of young people to attend TSU from the Huntsville area, and have worked with the local chapter and their church, First Missionary Baptist Church, to arrange college tours to TSU.
“In our own way, our overall ambition is to make sure TSU is the best university in the world,” Pam said.

While most five year olds are thinking about building blocks and coloring with crayons, Charles Flack found an interest in Tennessee State University.
The Shelbyville, Tenn. native said growing up as the youngest of four, with his siblings all attending TSU, kept him aware of the value of a big blue education.
“My family always pushed me to make good grades and I had scholarships to several schools, but my high school counselor was a TSU graduate and he took me to a recruitment fair where I met Dr. Edward Isibor. Dr. Isibor offered me a scholarship to TSU and the rest is history.”
Flack eventually earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from TSU in 1984. While a student he was involved in many activities, including chairing the Miss Tennessee State University Pageant, serving on the Student Election Commission and as a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society for electrical and computer engineering students. He was the first student from TSU to ever land an internship with Hewlett-Packard, where he worked for four straight summers. He has now worked for IBM nearly 30 years.
Throughout the years, Flack has made giving back a prior-ity. Along with financial support, he has devoted personal time and efforts, along with professional contributions to help propel TSU forward. As manager of the Network Inte-gration & Digital Video Surveillance Department at IBM, he also works as a campus recruiter to mentor and assist TSU students in efforts to obtain jobs with the company.
Flack is a regular donor to the university and has been a member of the President’s Society since its inception, elevating his support to A&I Society status for the past three years. He is a member of the Tennessee State University National Alumni Association Atlanta Chapter and, in 2005, was elected president of the Engineering Alumni Chapter. Since 2006, he has been actively involved on the TSUNAA executive board.
Additionally, Flack played an instrumental part in establish-ing an Engineering Alumni En-dowment for scholarships, and his commitment further lead to the development of the College
of Engineering Student Pre-Engineering Readiness Fund (SPERF), designed to financially support summer pre-college programs. In, 2009, Flack worked with TSU ad-ministrators to create the first IBM Academic Cloud in the state of Tennessee replicating the IBM model estab-lished at North Carolina State University.
“We need to develop a spirit of philanthropy and think about making gifts that extend beyond our lifetime. You can’t put a price on relationships or friendships established at TSU or the potential extracted out of us while at TSU,” Flack said.
“I’ve always considered TSU to have the potential to become the premier public institution of higher learning in the state of Tennessee. If something is not right, fix it. If something is working, just give it what it needs to enhance and improve it. It’s going to take visionary leadership and alumni contributions to make it a reality.”
Flack says TSU’s greatest days are ahead

Alan Collins’ life changed forever in 2006 after learning his son, Bryan, a Tennessee State University student, had lost his life in a car accident at the age of 24.
Like any parent, the devastating news left him unprepared for the emotional toil of having to bury a child. Yet, he discovered a silver lining through the painful tragedy which is now helping to preserve the memory of his son through the gift of education.
He, and Bryan’s mother, decided to establish the Bryan A. Collins Scholarship Fund to memorialize his legacy and help other students achieve their dreams. To date, the scholarship fund has assisted about 49 students with more than $95,000 in awards.
Collins said he was able to refocus and find a new sense of purpose after his son’s death. “It caused me to rethink my own personal and professional life.”
A year and a half after Bryan’s death, Collins left his corporate job with Pepsi where he had worked as vice president of human resources for the company’s Gatorade, Tropicana and Quaker Oats divisions. Today, he pursues meaningful opportunities as a best-selling author and human resources consultant. Collins has written five books on human resources issues, and is currently working on his sixth book. He ensures half of the revenue from his book sales go into directly supporting the Bryan A. Collins Scholarship Fund.
“I probably would still be working at Pepsi today if Bryan had lived,” Collins said. “But leaving was one of the best decisions I ever made. Your time on this planet is limited, so spending time doing what you want to do versus what you have to do is so important.”
Collins said Bryan had earned a Bachelor in Biology and Chemistry from Tennessee State University before
enrolling into the university’s master’s program for physical therapy, in which he was admitted at the time of his death. His goal was to become a physical therapist with a NBA or NFL team. He said his son was active in student life as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and participated in tutoring programs for children. Collins described Bryan as “very personable and popular” and “a champion for TSU.”
“We wanted to do something to ensure he would not be forgotten,” he said. “It was also a way to cope with his loss. He loved TSU, and to give in this way feels great because it gives us a way to honor his memory and help other students.”
He has achieved this aim, as Bryan’s legacy is alive and well. Students like Manasseh Warner, a Memphis sophomore majoring in psychology, are among the many benefiting from the scholarship support provided by Bryan’s family.
“It was a great honor to have received a scholarship of this caliber,” Warner said. “This scholarship has helped me get closer to attaining my dreams and has showed me the impact of giving back.”
Shondalyn Smith, a computer science major from Huntsville, Ala., is also a recipient of the Bryan A. Collins Scholarship and said, “Being an out-of-state student can be hard at times which make this scholarship very important to me and the continuing of my education at Tennessee State University.”
“I want Bryan’s life to be an example,” Collins said. “He was by no means – and none of us are – perfect, but he had great success in building personal relationships which are important beyond TSU. No one makes it alone. You have to know how to collaborate with people and influence and bring people along and up with you.”

Dr. Lawrence Redd had never heard of Tennessee State University growing up, but the school stuck in his mind when one of his classmates mentioned it to him while in high school.
The school also rang in his ear while listening to a basketball games over the radio. During that time, basketball superstar Dick Barnett was a player with the Syracuse Nationals, and Redd found him to be a good representative for the school and bringing it a lot of publicity. So much so, he decided to write a letter to TSU. The university answered by sending him an application.
“I often wonder who it was that sent that application back,” Redd said. “I always wanted to thank that person because it opened up a gateway for me that has taken me further than I could have ever imag-ined. I’m eternally thankful.”
Since obtaining a bachelor’s degree in 1964, Redd has enjoyed dual careers as an educator and radio personality. He officially retired in 2008, after five years on the faculty at Texas Southern University. Prior to that, he worked for 29 years teaching courses in television and radio at Michigan State University.
He credits TSU for his early professional development and the concern and support that a number of his professors showed the Michigan-native along the way.
“They [TSU professors] not only taught me how to study, but to survive,” he said. “They pushed me along and challenged me.”
Today, Redd and, his wife, Betty, who also attended TSU, are the examples they witnessed as students. In 2010, the
couple established the Lawrence N. and Betty Morrow Redd Scholarship for full-time undergraduate students majoring in Communications. Redd said it is their small way of helping the university they love.
“My university never left my thoughts or appreciation for the foundation it provided me,” he said. “The experiences and the people I had an opportunity to meet and interact with are simply priceless.”
Now, the Redds are making a way for the next generation of scholars and lead-ers through their gen-erosity. Students like Peoria, Ill. native Ste-ven Quinn Pangani-ban, majoring in mass communications, has aspirations of being a national news anchor.
“This [scholar-ship] will help me buy books, and other equipment I may need for my major,” Pan-ganiban said. “This will really help me achieve my career goals.”
Ce’Dra B. Jackson, a Nashville sophomore
majoring in mass communications, also received the scholarship.
“The funds awarded to me not only help with my tuition, but it eases my mind and I can continue to focus on my education,” she said. “Because of this scholarship, it encourages me to give back to TSU, and it definitely reminds me I have to do well in school and succeed.”
Redd said TSU’s survival is dependent on helping the institution and giving back and “the only way that can happen is by contributing what we can.”

The President’s Society donor club is comprised of a class of individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to Tennessee State University with annual gifts totaling $1,000 or more. While some make lump sum payments, others prefer installments over the year – a strategy that’s working for Nashville native and alumna Felicia Champion.
By donating only $20 weekly, Champion’s contributions are helping to keep students at TSU, many of whom might leave the university due to lack of resources.
“I just made the decision to do it on my own,” she said of the decision to be a President’s Society donor. “Overall it’s [giving] a feel good thing for me and I just enjoy doing it. I want to be part of the movement to take TSU to the next level and I’m proud when my $20 helps with that.
Champion, who enrolled at TSU as a non-traditional student, is the first person in her family to graduate from college. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 2006 and 2010, respectively. Her success has inspired others in her family to follow in her footsteps and become graduates.
“TSU is what I have known all my life, so it was a no-brainer to come to college here,” she said. “The people at TSU are just like one big family. That’s what makes it special.”
Along with her contributions to TSU, Champion also volunteers her time mentoring youth as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
“I’m all about helping my community,” Champion said. “Education is a big deal. If $20 a week is what it takes to help some young woman or young man achieve their goals and attend school, then that’s what I’ll do.”
Champion practices what she preaches and is a firm believer in giving back. She wants to encourage other alumni and students to understand that their responsibility to their alma mater doesn’t end after walking to the stage and receiving their diplomas.
“We have to give back so the next generation has an opportunity to help somebody else make it. There are so many people in need and so many who want to go to college but can’t because of resources. Even if you can only give $10 a week, it can help someone go to school.”

From Bangladesh to TSU: Student makes Big Blue home In search of a better life, Tasfia Islam and her family traveled from Bangladesh to the United States nearly eight years ago and settled in Nashville. As a high-achieving high school student, Islam wanted to take her thirst for knowledge further.
After graduating with a Scholars diploma, she soon found her way to Tennessee State University after discussing opportunities at the university with family members who attended.
“My cousin went to TSU and loved it,” Islam said, adding that her own experiences have created the same sentiments.
Islam’s attraction to TSU grew from the campus environment and the small class sizes, personal interaction with faculty and the research opportunities open to students.
Since enrolling at TSU, Islam has maintained an academic record which has continued to make her eligible for support assisting her with the purchase of books, equipment and other needs to prepare for the completion of her degree. Now, in her senior year, she is excited about completing her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in May.
“The scholarships have helped encourage me to do well in the future knowing that there are people who helped me to get a better education,” she said. “The support is making a difference in my life.”
Islam, who has aspirations of becoming a pharmacist, plans to stay focused on her educational goals.
“Family tradition and small class size brought me to TSU and I hope to be fully prepared to go into pharmacy school after I complete my degree here,” Islam said, adding she will definitely recommend others to attend TSU.
