2010 TENNESSEE LADY VOL SOCCERWhat a Weekend for Hatcher! Junior forward Chelsea Hatcher truly had a weekend to remember during Tennessee’s high-profile road trip to #13/12 Florida and #14/13 South Carolina. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native scored three total goals, including two during the 4-2 loss to the Gators, to take over the LADY VOL LEAD IN SCORING WITH SEVEN GOALS IN 2010. The occurrence marked the first two-goal output for Hatcher in any single match in her career, and she scored three times on just four total shots on goal, a 75% efficiency. Her tally at SC (live on ESPNU) was a thing of beauty as Hatcher battled two Gamecock defenders for space deep out on the left wing. She moved to her left and uncorked a bending, left-footed shot from 28 yards out that traveled past Gamecock keeper’s Mollie Patton’s outstretched fingertips into the upper right corner of the net.

Check Us Out On the Tube in 2010 Tennessee Lady Vol soccer fans have four opportunities to catch the Big Orange live on the tube during the 2010 campaign. UT downed Ole Miss (Oct. 10), 3-1, on Comcast Sports Southeast and will be at home versus Alabama (Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. ET) live on CSS. The Big Orange’s match-ups at defending Southeastern Conference regu-lar season champ #13/12 Florida (4-2 loss shown live on SUN Sports) and at defending SEC Tournament champ #14/13 South Carolina (2-1 loss shown live via ESPNU) were disseminated live on SUNSports and ESPNU on Oct. 15 & 17th, respectively. The Orange & White has seen a great deal of success on television during the program’s 14-year history, boasting a 24-9-3 mark (.708) in 36 all-time appearances on the tube. During the 2009 campaign, Tennessee played live on the tube on five occasions, compiling a 2-1-2 mark. The Orange & White dropped a 1-0 decision at #25 West Virginia on Sept. 20th that was broadcast locally by the West Virginia Public Broadcasting System, beat Kentucky 1-0 and Alabama 2-0 on CSS, tied Ole Miss 1-1 (2OT) on ESPNU and deadlocked No. 11 Florida 2-2 (2OT) on Fox Sports South.

Brown Bags the SEC Freshman Award for Oct. 11th For her heroic efforts in scoring consecutive match-winners to beat both Mississippi State (10/8) and Ole Miss (10/10), freshman midfielder Caroline Brown picked up Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Oct. 11th. The Hershey, Pa., native scored her first “golden goal” at 102:22 to beat MSU 1-0 in the second overtime while she tallied the winner at Ole Miss at 23:06 to break a 1-1, first-half tie. The goals were the first of her career in SEC action and marked her first scores since the season opener versus Western Kentucky.

Kylie’s Kicking Into Gear! After entering the 2010 season with no career goals, assists or points, sopho-more midfielder Kylie Bono has really kicked her offensive production into gear over Tennessee’s last few matches. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native picked up her first career assist in the season-opener against Western Kentucky, but really ignited on Sept. 19th, during the 8-0 win over Chattanooga. She scored twice and dished a helper for five total points versus the Lady Mocs and followed that up with goals against Arkansas and Vanderbilt. Her match-winner at 82:04 of the 1-0 triumph over the Commodores finished a string of four goals over a four-match stretch for Bono. An assist on Caroline Brown’s winner at Ole Miss made it 10 POINTS TOTAL OVER UT’S LAST SEVEN MATCHES (SEPT 19-OCT. 10). During UT’s last nine contests, she has also fired off 33 total shots with 18 of those being quality drives on frame. Hatcher’s Heroic Effort Hauls SEC Honor For her late match heroics during the come-from-behind, 2-1 SEC-opening triumph over Arkansas, Tennessee junior forward Chelsea Hatcher was rewarded with her first career selection as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week (9/27). The Cincinnati, Ohio, native fired off a team-high 10 shots versus the Razorbacks but it was her last one that truly counted, managing to beat diving UA keeper Britni Williams at the right post from about 22 yards out with just 2:48 left on the regulation clock. The goal marked Hatcher’s fourth of the season and her third career match-winning score.

2010 SEC PRESEASON COACHES POLL

More Tennessee Offensive Power in 2010 Taking a look at this year’s Tennessee statistics in comparison to last year’s pro-vides quite a shock from an offensive standpoint. Through the opening 16 matches of the 2010 campaign, the Big Orange has regis-tered 30 goals, 25 assists and 85 total points. COMBINING ALL 20 MATCHES OF THE 2009 SEASON, UT MANAGED TO POST TOTALS OF 23 GOALS, 17 ASSISTS AND 63 TOTAL POINTS. We’ve previously discussed this year’s outstanding balance as 11 different Lady Vols have scored goals in 2010, the most at Rocky Top since the 2002 campaign when 14 different UT players performed the feat. This season’s Tennessee squad eclipsed last year’s entire total for assists and points in just 10 matches and equaled the ‘09 goal total during contest number 11.

Dowd’s Doing Work! Junior forward Emily Dowd has really stepped up her scoring output recently, posting a pair of two-goal outputs during contests against No. 24 Arizona State and Chattanooga and scoring late at Ole Miss. Those efforts have had the Gainesville, Fla., native among the SEC and national statistical rankings for the last few weeks. Dowd was eighth in the league in goals per match (0.46) and was tied for seventh in goals scored (six) as of Oct. 11th. On a national level Dowd was 93rd in all of NCAA Division I in goals per contest as of Sept. 26th. Her previous career high for goals (two) and points (seven) in a single season came during her 2008 sophomore campaign. We Cracked the Century Mark Tennessee picked up the 100th all-time home victory in program history against Arkansas on Sept. 24th as Chelsea Hatcher scored with 2:48 left in regulation to down the Razorbacks, 2-1. UT now sports an all-time home record of 101-34-6 (.738) and is 5-3-1 in the friendly confines in 2010. The mark certainly means a great deal at UT where winning on the home field has always been a top priority.

We Extended the Unbeaten String to Four! With a 1-0 triumph over Vanderbilt on Oct. 1st, Tennessee extended its sea-son-long unbeaten streak to four matches, after already posting victories against Chattanooga (8-0, 9/19) and Arkansas (2-1, 9/24) and tying LSU (1-1, 2OT, 9/26). Unfortunately, despite out-shooting Kentucky 20-14, the Lady Vols had the skein end on Oct. 3rd, in a 1-0 loss to the Wildcats at the Regal Soccer Stadium. The 2009 version of the Lady Vol soccer team managed four-match unbeaten skeins on two different occasions, going 3-0-1 from Sept. 4-Sept. 13 (tie at #19 Minnesota; wins vs. Wisconsin, Memphis, Western Carolina) and 2-0-2 from Oct. 4-Oct. 16 (wins at Kentucky and versus Mississippi State; ties against Ole Miss and #11 Florida).

Getting Off to a Good Start in SEC Play is Important The slate was clean heading into the Southeastern Conference campaign as every-one sported an untarnished league mark. With a 2-1, come-from-behind win over Arkansas on Sept. 24th, Tennessee improved to 9-5-1 all-time in SEC lidlifters and 7-3-1 in such match-ups under the guidance of 11th year head coach Angela Kelly. At the Regal Soccer Stadium in SEC schedule openers, UT is a sparkling 6-1-0 with the only loss occurring to No. 17 Vanderbilt back during the inaugural season of 1996. Quintets of Quality By a Pair of Lady Vols! Sophomore midfielder Kylie Bono and freshman midfielder Sanna Saarinen per-formed a feat during the 8-0 rout of Chattanooga (9/19) that hadn’t been pulled off by any Lady Vol soccer player since Emily Redberg back on Oct. 21, 2007, against Mississippi State. What was the feat you ask? Well let me tell you. Each of the play-ers tallied FIVE POINTS versus the Lady Mocs via their FIRST TWO CAREER GOALS and an assist.

Back on Track in a Big Way Tennessee snapped a four-match losing streak in a major way on Sept. 19th in Knoxville, hammering in-state foe Chattanooga by an 8-0 score. The eight goals and

nine assists tied for the second-most in both categories during a single match in UT history. UT’s 43 shots marked the fourth-highest total in school annals, while the Big Orange also held a 24-2 advantage in shots on frame and a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks. The Big Orange also potentially made program history as all 23 available players on the roster drew time in the match. That is believed to the most ever in a single contest in Tennessee history.

Lovin’ the Balance Having had almost 50% of its total team goals scored by a single player during each of the past two seasons (Kylee Rossi, 13 goals in 2008; Mick Imgram, 12 goals in 2009), it’s nice to see the Lady Vol soccer team getting balanced contributions from numer-ous players in 2010. Entering this weekend’s matches against Auburn and Alabama, Tennessee has registered 30 total goals with those HAVING BEEN SCORED BY 11 DIFFER-ENT PLAYERS (freshman Tori Bailey, junior Emily Dowd, junior Chelsea Hatcher, sophomore Alexis Owens, senior Anna Fisher, freshman Caroline Brown, junior Emily Shore, sophomore Kylie Bono, freshman Sanna Saarinen, sophomore Ali Hall, sopho-more Amy Harrison). IT MARKS THE MOST PLAYERS THAT HAVE SCORED IN A SIN-GLE SEASON FOR TENNESSEE SINCE 14 DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS SCORED FOR UT BACK DURING THE 2002 CAMPAIGN. During all of ‘09 only six different Lady Vol players managed to score goals. That feat was surpassed through just the opening four matches of the new season.

The Precedent Exists... Just because Tennessee got off to a 3-5 start before opening SEC play doesn’t mean there still aren’t potentially big things ahead for the 2010 Lady Vol soccer team. Angela Kelly’s squads have often been tested early against some of the top teams in the nation to prep them for the rugged SEC and NCAA campaigns. In fact, back in 2005, UT opened at 1-4-1 overall before finishing the year at 15-6-2, winners of the SEC Triple Crown and advancing to the NCAA Second Round.

Among the Top Freshmen in the Nation Top Drawer Soccer released its most recent listing of the year (Oct. 3rd) docu-menting its Top 100 Freshman women’s soccer players in the country. A pair of Lady Vols continue to be included on the list as UT rookie midfielders Caroline Brown and

2010 TENNESSEE LADY VOL SOCCERTori Bailey (has been as high as No. 40) were tabbed No. 50 and No. 52 in the nation, respectively. Bailey is currently tied for third on the Big Orange in assists with two to go along with a match-winning goal versus Richmond, while Brown owns three scores (vs. W. Kentucky, at MSU and Ole Miss) and a pair of assists in her brief Big Orange career.

We’ve Still Never Started 3-0 Did you know that despite all the success the Tennessee Lady Vol soccer program has had throughout the years, the squad has never started a season 3-0. The 1997, 2003 and 2007 teams all opened a perfect 2-0 before dropping their next matches. Of course the major reason a loss has often materialized during the early part of the year is the daunting non-conference schedule played by head coach Angela Kelly to prepare her team for the league and postseason slates. Among squads that UT has faced in that second or third match throughout the years (often on the road) are such foes as perennial national titlist North Carolina and nationally-rated squads such as Portland, Southern California, Washington, West Virginia, Penn State, Maryland and Virginia, just to name a few. The scheduling system has often seemed to pay dividends down the road as UT has won three SEC regular-season crowns, four SEC Tournament titles and been to five NCAA Sweet 16’s. This year UT started the campaign with a 2-1 record, suffering a 3-1 setback to #14/12 Maryland (Aug. 27) in its second match of the year during the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic at the Regal Soccer Stadium.

Off On the Right Foot With a commanding 3-0 victory over Western Kentucky on the opening night of the 2010 season (Aug. 20th), the Tennessee Lady Vols got off to a solid start in the soccer program’s 15th anniversary year. Junior forward Chelsea Hatcher posted her first career three-point night by tallying a goal and an assist. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native scored off freshman midfielder Tori Bailey’s first career helper just 3:33 into the match for a quick 1-0 lead. Hatcher later tipped a long free kick from senior defender Grace Cuenin to rookie Caroline Brown, who promptly blasted home her initial col-legiate tally to improve the count to 3-0. Senior Anna Fisher also got in on the action with a goal in the 22nd minute. Tennessee out-shot the Lady Toppers by a commanding 23-2, while senior goalkeeper Molly Baird made two saves in posting her eighth career shutout. The win equaled the largest UT had during the entire 2009 campaign (3-0 over Miss. State/Oct. 2009).

What a Starting Debut! A pair of freshmen made quite a debut for the Orange & White versus Western Kentucky. Midfielder Caroline Brown slammed home her first career goal in the 70th minute while forward Tori Bailey dished her initial career assist to Chelsea Hatcher, who tallied the first score (of an eventual 3-0 victory) just 3:33 into the match. In all, Brown, Bailey and fellow rookie midfielder Sanna Saarinen all saw their initial action in the Orange & White during the contest versus WKU with Bailey drawing her first collegiate start.

Opening Night! The Lady Vols have now compiled a 10-5 record all time in season openers, playing on the road or at a neutral site six times to kick off the year. Tennessee has won its first match on the schedule six times in the last eight years. On Aug. 20th in Knoxville at the Regal Soccer Stadium, the Lady Vols got goals from junior forward Chelsea Hatcher, senior forward Anna Fisher and freshman midfielder Caroline Brown (1st career goal) in routing Western Kentucky, 3-0.

The Prelude to the First Act On August 13th Tennessee traveled to Louisville, Ky., for a preseason exhibition contest against the Louisville Cardinals. Goals by midfielders Julie Edwards (senior) and Caroline Brown (freshman) boosted UT to a two-score advantage early in the second half en route to an eventual 2-1 Lady Vol triumph. The Big Orange out-shot UL in the contest, 10-9, while Lady Vol senior goalkeeper Molly Baird made three saves between the pipes to garner the victory. Junior forward Chelsea Hatcher and Edwards led UT with three shots each, while senior forward Anna Fisher, junior midfielder Emily Shore, Edwards and Brown were responsible for Tennessee’s four total shots on goal. Rookie mid-fielder Sanna Saarinen was credited with an assist on Brown’s goal that granted the Orange & White its two-score advantage.

Looking at the Polls Tennessee is not currently ranked in any of the soccer polls, but has previously been among others receiving votes this season in the Top Drawer Soccer and Soccer Times listings. Conference-wise in the preseason ratings Florida led the way in the NSCAA/adidas poll at No. 11 with South Carolina 12th. LSU was represented in the Top Drawer Soccer listing at No. 20. The Orange and White will face six teams in 2010 that started the campaign ranked by any of the three systems (NSCAA, Soccer America, Top Drawer Soccer) in Florida, South Carolina, LSU, Maryland, Wisconsin and defending national champion North Carolina. Back in 2007, the Orange and White earned its highest ranking in program history at No. 6 in the NSCAA/adidas poll (Oct. 2) after opening the season 7-1-1 and downing No. 12 South Carolina and No. 15 Florida to kick off the SEC slate.

Hatcher Reaped Preseason League Honor Junior midfielder/forward Chelsea Hatcher started the new campaign as one of 15 league players tabbed to the 2010 Preseason All-SEC Team. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native tied for second on the Lady Vol squad in goals during 2009 with three to go along with

an assist while firing a team-best 76 shots (21 on frame). Entering the year she had started in 25 of her 38 career matches played during her stay at Rocky Top.

Home Sweet Home The Lady Vols have long made winning on their home pitch a priority. At 101-34-6 (.738) all-time at the Regal Soccer Stadium (previously the UT Soccer Complex) and 5-3-1 thus far in 2010, Tennessee has averaged nearly seven wins a campaign in the friendly confines. Last season, the Big Orange were 4-4-2 in Knoxville with wins over ETSU, Memphis, Western Carolina and Mississippi State as well as ties against No. 24 Ole Miss and No. 11 Florida.

Staring Upwards in the Eastern Division...In the Preseason Anyway In a preseason poll of the Southeastern Conference’s 12 soccer coaching staffs, the Tennessee Lady Vols were picked to finish fourth in the league’s Eastern Division. With 32 tallies the Big Orange trailed the choice for SEC regular-season champ, the Florida Gators (66 points) in the division race, Georgia (51 points) and South Carolina (50 pts.). Vanderbilt (29 pts.) and Kentucky (18 pts.) rounded out the East. The Auburn Tigers (61 pts.) were selected as the coaches’ pick to take the SEC Western Division. The gap between AU and second-place LSU (58 pts.) was just three points. Ole Miss (47 pts.), Alabama (33 pts.), Arkansas (31 pts.) and Mississippi State (16 pts.) completed the West standings.

2010 Lady Vol Soccer...A Brief Preview Entering her 11th year at the helm of the Tennessee program, head coach Angela Kelly welcomes back 18 returning letter winners and 10 players who started nine or more matches for UT during the 2009 season, while adding five lauded newcomers. Joined by fourth-year assistant coach Joe Kirt and third-year assistant and former Lady Vol standout Keeley Dowling, the experienced staff will be looking to rebound from a disappointing 8-9-3 campaign that saw the program miss qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000. Despite losing three seniors, including All-Southeastern Conference First Team selection and leading goal scorer Mick Imgram as well as defensive standout Sarah Jackyra and experienced back-up goalkeeper Sarah Kitchin, plenty of talent returns to bolster the efforts of the Big Orange venturing into the new campaign. Included is 2010 preseason All-SEC forward Chelsea Hatcher, 2009 SEC All-Freshman midfielder Amy Harrison and redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird. “With 2010 ready to get underway, as both a staff and team, we feel good about where we are heading into the new season,” Kelly said. “The learning curve so far has been tremendous, especially with the freshmen coming in and having their first collegiate game just days after the start of their initial collegiate camp. I feel very confident about the information the squad is attaining and how they are applying that knowledge to game scenarios as a complete unit. We have many unique personalities within the group, and I believe that will make this a dynamic group to watch.”

Lady Vol Classic History Tennessee hosted the 11th Tennessee Lady Vol Classic over Aug. 27 & 29 at the Regal Soccer Stadium as #14/12 Maryland, Richmond and Kennesaw State ventured to Knoxville. The Lady Vols dropped a tough 3-1 decision to the nationally-ranked Terrapins in their event opener before rebounding for a come-from-behind, 2-1 win over Richmond. By virtue of a 1-1-0 finish, the Big Orange finished second behind the 2-0 UM squad. Junior forward Emily Dowd scored her first goal of the season against Maryland. Sophomore forward Alexis Owens tallied the match-tying score in the second half versus Richmond, while freshman midfielder Tori Bailey scored her first career goal, in the process recording her first match-winning tally, and also assisted on Owens’ score to take over the team lead in assists as of Aug. 29th. For their efforts during the weekend, senior goalkeeper Molly Baird, junior forward Chelsea Hatcher and Bailey were each tabbed to the Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament Team. 1 2 FW. Kentucky (0-1-0) 0 0 0Tennessee (1-0-0) 2 1 3 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In front of 606 fans on a clear but steamy night at the Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., the Tennessee Lady Vol soccer squad managed two scores during the opening 22 minutes of action to open its 2010 campaign in style with a dominating 3-0 win over Western Kentucky. The Big Orange out-shot the Lady Toppers by a commanding 23-2 total, getting goals from junior midfielder Chelsea Hatcher, who also delivered an assist as part of her three-point night, senior forward Anna Fisher and freshman midfielder Caroline Brown. For Brown the tally marked the first of her brief career at Rocky Top, while fellow rookie midfielder Tori Bailey also recorded her initial career assist on Hatcher’s season-opening score. Sophomore midfielder Kylie Bono (first career assist) and senior defender Grace Cuenin also recorded helpers during the shutout triumph. Tennessee out-shot WKU in the first half, 11-1, and by a commanding 12-1 count during the second stanza. For the Lady Vols redshirt senior net mind-er Molly Baird was required to make just two saves in tallying her eighth career solo shutout between the pipes. Just a meager 3:33 into the new season, UT’s diminutive Bailey (4’11”) made a run from the left side toward the middle of the 18-yard box, delivering a feed to Hatcher. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native settled the ball and drove a right-footed blast past the WKU keeper for a quick, 1-0 advantage. The Tennessee lead expanded in the 22nd minute as Bono received a feed up the middle and passed to Fisher just inside the 18. The Franklin, Tenn., native, who has returned this season following an injury-filled 2009 campaign, dribbled to the right around a defender and unleashed a drive back across the face of the goal into the lower left hand corner to make it 2-0. It was more of the same when the teams came out of the locker room for the second stanza. Sophomore defender Ali Hall expended great effort on a header that hit the right post, before the ball bounced back into play. Sophomore midfielder Amy Harrison was waiting to slam home the rebound for what appeared to be Tennessee’s third goal of the contest. Unfortunately, the official along the sideline had his flag up signaling offside as the score was disallowed. A Western Kentucky foul during the 70th minute finally helped to add another tally on the scoreboard for the Big Orange. Off the free kick from approximately 40 yards out, Cuenin drove a ball into the middle that ricocheted off Hatcher to the feet of Brown. The product of Hershey, Pa., blasted the sphere home to make it a commanding 3-0, Tennessee.

MATCH 1: WESTERN KENTUCKYFri., Aug. 20, 2010 - Knoxville, Tenn.

Regal Soccer Stadium (606)

1 2 F#14/12 Maryland (3-0-0) 2 1 3Tennessee (1-1-0) 1 0 1 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - With a crowd of 1,083 orange-clad fans in attendance on a Friday night at the Regal Soccer Stadium, the Tennessee Lady Vols battled hard but dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 12 Maryland to fall to 1-1 on the young 2010 campaign. The Terrapins managed a pair of scores just 2:15 apart in the opening half to take early control, 2-0. Tennessee managed to cut the gap to one at 23:56 on the first tally of the season from junior forward Emily Dowd, but saw UM register an insurance goal in the 75th minute to seal the triumph. Maryland out-shot Tennessee 14-11 and forced four saves by Lady Vol redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird. Junior forward Chelsea Hatcher led the Big Orange offense with five shots in the match-up. Following sustained pressure from the Terrapins, the score-less deadlock was broken at 17:37 as Lydia Hastings received a ball about 40 yards out, cut straight up the middle between a pair of defenders and beat Baird bottom left from approximately eight yards to make it 1-0. Just 2:15 later the advantage for UM grew as a cross to the middle of the 18-yard box was settled by forward Ashley Grove. She pivoted and fired successfully into the bottom right of the twine from about 14 yards to make it 2-0. The momentum seemed to swing to Tennessee’s favor as the Big Orange managed three successive shots out front that were blocked. UT managed to keep the ball in the offensive zone and, off a missed clearance by Maryland, the ball ended up at Dowd’s feet. The Gainesville, Fla., native promptly buried it in the net for her first goal of the young campaign to cut the UM lead to 2-1. The Lady Vols came oh so close to tying the score just 1:46 later as Hatcher unloaded a shot on frame that hit the crossbar before skimming over the top for a goal kick. With time running short in the opening 45 minutes, Hatcher received a pass on the left wing (3:30 left), made a nifty move to go right between a pair of Maryland defenders and fired a shot to the far post that trickled just a foot or so wide. The final Maryland score came during the 75th min-ute as Jazmyne Spencer just managed to squeeze around a Tennessee defender on the left wing and fired low to the far post to finalize the count at 3-1.

1 2 FRichmond (1-2-1) 1 0 1Tennessee (2-1-0) 0 2 2 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Despite conceding a third-minute goal and trailing 1-0 at the halftime break, the Tennessee Lady Vol soccer team (1-1-0) battled back, behind a commanding second-half effort, to defeat Richmond (1-2-1), 2-1, in front of 556 fans on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon at the Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. Sophomore forward Alexis Owens dead-locked the count at 1-1 at the 57:31 mark by scoring her first goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Tori Bailey not only tallied her first collegiate goal (68:23) and registered her initial career match-winner, but the Fenton, Mich., native also picked up her team-high second assist of the campaign on Owens’ tying effort. UT out-shot the Spiders by a staggering 27-12 count, including a 19-6 advantage during the second 45 minutes. Richmond wasted little time making its presence felt in the contest, getting on the score-board just 2:59 into the match. A cross from the left wing by Kat Russell found the feet of forward Becca Wann, who promptly blasted home her team-best third goal of the season from 10 yards out to make it 1-0. During the 23rd minute UT appeared to have dead-locked the score as junior forward Chelsea Hatcher received a pass between defenders in the middle and beat keeper Melissa Pacheco from about 12 yards out. Unfortunately, for the Lady Vols the linesman had his flag up to signal offside on the play and deny the score. The Orange & White finally tied the match at 57:31. Freshman midfielder Caroline Brown ripped a shot towards the right post that was saved but managed to escape the grasp of the Richmond net minder. Bailey hustled in to corral the orb near the end line and crossed to Owens at the far post. The Carmel, Ind., native promptly buried it in the twine from approximately four yards out to tie the score at 1-1. Later, Bailey raced up the middle and launched a shot from 22 yards out that looked as if it might travel wide left of frame. Everyone, including Bailey and the goalkeeper Young, seemed to let up on the ball thinking it would venture wide, but instead it hit the upright and caromed off the surprised keeper’s head into the back of the net as the Big Orange erupted in celebration. With 1:05 left on the regulation clock, Richmond forward Kat Russell got in clear from the left side. She fired a shot to the upper right corner of the net, forcing Baird to dive fully extended in an attempt to make the save. The Raleigh, N.C., product got her fingertips on the ball, pushing it aside just enough that it hit off the crossbar and back into the field of play.

Hatcher’s goal came off the first career assist (and initial career point) from freshman midfielder Sanna Saarinen at the 87:56 mark. Redshirt senior net minder Molly Baird registered three stops during the match for the Big Orange. Hatcher, Saarinen and junior forward Emily Dowd, who scored twice on Friday night against No. 24 Arizona State, were each tabbed to the Sun Devil Desert Classic All-Tournament Team for their efforts dur-ing the weekend. Arizona wasted little time getting on the board with a tone-setting goal just 1:03 into the match as a through ball up the middle found forward and UA leading scorer Renae Cuellar just onside past the UT backline. She broke in clean on frame and fired low past Baird for a 1-0 Wildcat advantage. Arizona would eventually lead 3-0 until Hatcher’s late goal at 87:56.

1 2 FWisconsin (2-3-2) 1 0 1Tennessee (2-5-0) 0 0 0 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Lady Vol soccer team (2-5-0) out-shot its visitors by a 20-12 total, including 8-6 in shots on frame, and saw a late second half goal by sophomore Alexis Owens disallowed on an offside call in dropping a 1-0 decision to Wisconsin (2-3-2) in front of the fifth largest crowd in Regal Soccer Stadium history (1,744). The Big Orange offense created numerous scoring chances in the attacking third but either just missed the target or had UW keeper Michele Dalton come up with one of her eight total saves to preserve the shutout. The large crowd in attendance witnessed a very rough contest that saw the head referee whistle for 38 total fouls, 20 against UT, and issue four yellow cards. Junior forward Chelsea Hatcher led UT with six shots in the match, sophomore midfielder Kylie Bono was credited with a team-best two shots on goal and redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird made five saves. Redshirt junior defender Molly Delk, who previously played for Tennessee during the 2008 campaign, was added to the official roster prior to this match and drew 68 minutes of action as a back-line substitute. With Tennessee having failed to put away several chances in front of the net, it was the Badgers who struck first at 34:20. Catie Sessions delivered a cross from the right wing into the six-yard box that was headed into the net by forward Laurie Nosbusch. The goal that granted UW a 1-0 lead marked Nosbusch’s team-best second goal of the campaign. With time running short it appeared that the Orange & White had finally found an equal-izer. Off a cross from the right wing, Owens took advantage of a bouncing ball in the six-yard box, tallying what appeared to be the tying goal at 81:27. Unfortunately for the Lady Vols, the official had the flag up signaling the play as offside.

In the process UT also recorded its fourth-highest shot total in program annals by out-shooting the Lady Mocs, 43-6, and tied for the second-most assists in a single match with nine. Tennessee held a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks and a staggering 24-2 edge on shots on goal. All 23 available players on the Lady Vol roster received playing time during the contest. Junior forward Emily Dowd posted her team-best fourth and fifth scores of the season, just barely missing a hat trick late in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Kylie Bono and freshman midfielder Sanna Saarinen each tallied their initial two career goals at Rocky Top as well as an assist to total five points apiece during the match. Sophomore defender Ali Hall delivered her first goal of 2010 and an assist, sophomore midfielder Amy Harrison registered her first goal of the campaign and junior forward Chelsea Hatcher, junior midfielder Emily Shore, junior defender Molly Delk, junior forward Ashley Owens, sophomore forward Alexis Owens and freshman midfielder Caroline Brown each were credited with a single assist. After the Razorbacks jumped out to a one-score lead only 10:45 into the con-test, UT got the equalizer at 16:41 off a header by sophomore midfielder Kylie Bono, her third goal over the Big Orange’s last two matches. Junior midfielder Emily Shore and senior forward Anna Fisher each registered assists on the Yorba Linda, Calif., native’s score. Tennessee out-shot UA by a commanding 29-12 total, including 16-2 over the final 45 minutes, and 10-6 in shots on frame. Each squad managed six corner kicks in the contest, while redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird man-aged five saves in tallying her 12th career victory between the pipes. With the Big Orange continuing to pressure late with the match tied at 1-1, it fell to Hatcher to deliver in the clutch. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native did just that by firing a blast on goal from about 22 yards out on the right side. The shot bent just past a diving Bernier and snuck in at the right post to grant Tennessee a stunning 2-1 lead with just 2:48 to play.

LSU forced the extra sessions by tying the contest with just 2:58 remaining on the third goal of the season from midfielder Natalie Martineau. Tennessee had a huge “golden goal” scoring chance early in the second overtime on a header from the left side by junior forward Emily Dowd, but the ball was eventually saved out of the goal mouth by LSU defender Kellie Murphy and cleared. The Big Orange out-shot the Tigers 22-17 overall and 8-6 in shots on frame. During the overtime periods UT managed a 10-2 shot differential, including a 7-0 total over the final 10 minutes of extra time. Tennessee sophomore midfielder Amy Harrison granted the Lady Vols the lead at 18:59 by register-ing her second goal of the campaign. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, native’s score occurred off the second assist of 2010 from sophomore defender Ali Hall. Senior goalkeeper Molly Baird managed five saves during the contest while her counterpart for the Tigers, Megan Kinneman, was credited with six stops. Tennessee didn’t post its initial shot of the match until the 18:55 mark, but made sure when it did to do so with some quality. After a UT corner kick, Hall eventually headed a ball on frame that hit the crossbar and rebounded back out into the middle of the 18. Harrison raced in quickly to drive home the rebound from about 12 yards and beat Kinneman to grant the Big Orange a 1-0 advantage. With the Tigers pressing hard for an equalizer late in the contest, the ball was looped into the LSU offensive zone during the 87th minute. After ricocheting around in the crowd out front, the sphere eventually managed to venture from Allysha Chapman to Martineau who scored to the right of Baird at 87:02 and dead-locked the scoreboard at 1-1.

1 2 FKentucky (7-4-1, 1-2-1 SEC) 1 0 1Tennessee (5-6-1, 2-1-1 SEC) 0 0 0 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - On a cold and blustery Sunday afternoon at the Regal Soccer Stadium, Caitlin Landis’ goal at 37:43 proved just enough for Kentucky (7-4-1, 1-2-1 Southeastern Conference) as the Wildcats ended Tennessee’s (5-6-1, 2-1-1 SEC) season-long four-match unbeaten streak by posting a 1-0 victory. In an especially physical con-test that saw 28 total fouls whistled (16 on UT), the Lady Vols out-shot the Blue & White, 20-14, and owned a 11-4 advantage on corner kicks but failed to find the back of the net. Tennessee did come close on several occasions to locating the elusive equalizer. One of the best opportunities came at the 38:10 mark as Big Orange senior defender Melissa Speros’ long shot hit the woodwork where the left post and crossbar connect before rebound-ing back into play and being cleared. Lady Vol junior forward Chelsea Hatcher fired off a team-high six shots, while sophomore midfielder Kylie Bono launched four shots, including a squad-high three on frame. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird made four saves between the pipes, while her UK counterpart, Sydney Hiance, tallied five stops. Down the stretch UT’s offense continued applying strong pressure by forcing corner after corner (five total over the last 17:21 of regulation) but couldn’t seem to get off a quality shot on net. Each Big Orange feed into the middle either traveled harm-lessly through all the traffic in the 18 or was headed back toward the midfield by the Kentucky defense. A drive by Tennessee junior midfielder Emily Shore at 84:22 was blocked, marking the final credited shot for either team during the match as Kentucky held on for its 1-0 victory.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In front of 650 fans on Friday night at the Regal Soccer Stadium, the Tennessee Lady Vol soccer team (5-5-1, 2-0-1 Southeastern Conference) extended its season-long unbeaten streak to four matches after getting a clutch goal at the 82:04 mark from sopho-more midfielder Kylie Bono to down in-state rival Vanderbilt (4-6-1, 0-2-1 SEC), 1-0. Bono’s goal marked her fourth over UT’s last four matches, while junior midfielder Emily Shore registered her team-high-tying third assist of the campaign by serving the corner kick to the far post that Bono finished via header for the match-winning tally. Tennessee out-shot the Commodores 13-8 overall and managed an 8-7 advantage on corner kicks in the contest. Junior forward Chelsea Hatcher and sophomore midfielder Amy Harrison each regis-tered three shots to lead the Big Orange. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird made a pair of saves between the pipes in picking up her second solo shutout of 2010. With time beginning to run short in the contest, some UT offensive pressure forced a corner in the 82nd minute. Shore drove the ball to the far post where Bono had set up shop while marked just two yards out. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native leapt high and headed the ball into the twine just inside the left upright to grant the Big Orange a huge, 1-0 advantage at the 82:04 mark. The score marked Bono’s fourth of her career. A pass from the right wing found VU’s Molly Kinsella located in the middle of the 18 with 3:29 left, but she was marked closely by UT’s defense and failed to get off a shot. With just 35 seconds remaining VU again crossed a dangerous ball from the left wing, but Shore managed to get a sliding, right-footed touch on the sphere to clear it away from the zone and secure the Tennessee triumph.

The Big Orange out-shot the hosts by a 27-16 count, including 13-7 in shots on goal, and owned a commanding 6-0 advantage on corner kicks. For Brown the goal marked her second of the season and both the first match-winner and “golden goal” of her brief Lady Vol career. Shore tallied her team-leading fourth assist of 2010, while Emerson registered her first assist and point of the campaign. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird made seven saves in improving to 3-1-1 in league play while picking up her second solo SEC shutout and lower-ing her conference-only goals against average to 0.56. With 8:06 remaining junior forward Emily Dowd blasted a shot off the cross bar from about 16 yards out in the middle that rebounded back into the field of play. The ball was soon tracked down by Emerson who made a pass to Shore. She delivered a ball over the defense to Brown marked near the left end line. An MSU defender and the keeper made a step up anticipating a cross to the middle, but the Hershey, Pa., native decided to take a shot from the tough angle and buried the ball in the far side netting for the “golden goal.”

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - On Friday evening at the James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Fla., #13/12 Florida posted three goals over a 4:45 stretch during the first half and held on despite a 15-shot assault from the Big Orange in the second frame to register a 4-2 victory over Tennessee in a high-profile SEC Eastern Division clash that was shown live via SUN Sports. UT junior forward Chelsea Hatcher scored both goals for the Lady Vols, giving her six for the season to tie junior teammate Emily Dowd for the team lead. Dowd registered her first assist of the 2010 campaign on Tennessee’s initial score at the 49:01 mark. The Big Orange out-shot Florida by a 17-11 count, including a stag-gering 15-5 in the second half, and posted a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks. Florida managed the first goal of the match at 26:26 off a cross from the right wing that was delivered by defender Jazmyne Avant. With the ball served into the middle from close to the right end line, midfielder Tahnai Annis managed to score on a volleyed shot from about six yards out, beating a diving Molly Baird to the right to make it 1-0. With tons of momentum suddenly in their favor, the Gators located the back of the net again just 2:21 later as a cross from the left wing by Tymrak was finished by midfielder Lindsay Thompson. The UF advantage grew to 3-0 as Thompson tallied again from seven yards out off a corner kick at 31:11. Out of the halftime break, the Lady Vols got just what they needed by scoring in the first five minutes of the second stanza to cut the UF lead to 3-1. Dowd received a feed in the midfield and passed to Hatcher in a lot of space to the right side of frame. Hatcher advanced in on goal and ripped a 12-yard shot past the UF keeper Katie Fraine at 49:01. The Gators answered right back in the 53rd minute, however, as a cross from the right wing to the far post by Travis was volleyed in via a running header by Annis for a 4-1 UF advan-tage. The Lady Vols picked up their second tally of the match at 55:44 on a bizarre play that started as a fairly routine cross to the middle. Hatcher dribbled down near the right end line and looked to deliver to a teammate in the middle. The net minder Fraine seemed to step up, trying to antici-pate the run up the middle of the 18 by Tennessee senior forward Anna Fisher. UF’s keeper ended up in bad position, though, as the cross ended up slightly behind her and, while attempting to make a leaning grab, helped deflect the ball into the Gator net to make it 4-2. With momentum fully on the UT side, Harrison, off a corner kick served in by Shore, managed a beautiful header that traveled from the left side of goal towards the upper right corner at 72:35. A Florida defender standing guard at the upright managed a goal-saving header, clear-ing the sure score away from the line and back into play. On a through ball up the center of the pitch in the 80th minute, Dowd managed to beat her defender in a one-vs.-one battle just off the right side of frame. She dribbled to her left across the goal mouth and, while setting up for a potential shot from about 13 yards out, went down while marked in the 18. The referee signaled for play to continue on as UT missed a golden opportunity to cut its deficit to one.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Despite the team-leading seventh goal of the season from junior forward Chelsea Hatcher on an incredible, 28-yard shot during the 78th minute, Tennessee (7-8-1, 4-3-1 Southeastern Conference) dropped a tough, 2-1 decision to #14/13 South Carolina on Sunday after-noon at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium in Columbia, S.C. The Big Orange out-shot the hosts by a 10-6 total, including 4-2 in shots on goal, and posted a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks. For Hatcher the goal marked her third score of the weekend, after find-ing the back of the net twice during UT’s 4-2 loss to #12 Florida in Gainesville on Friday evening. A long ball over the UT backline during the 32nd minute by midfielder Kira Campbell helped the Gamecocks break into the scoring column. The feed located SC leading scorer Kayla Grimsley onside with some space on the left wing. She dribbled in and beat diving keeper Molly Baird into the right side of the netting from eight yards out to make it 1-0 Garnet and Black at 31:25. During the 59th minute South Carolina added to its advantage as a free kick by Campbell to the far post was put home on a run-ning header by defender Ellen Fahey to make it 2-0, Garnet & Black. An incredible individual effort by Hatcher resulted in her team-leading seventh goal of the campaign at 77:02. Despite having to battle a pair of South Carolina defenders for space, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native moved right then back to her left before firing a beautiful, left-footed shot that traveled just over the out-stretched fingertips of leaping goalkeeper Patton. The highlight-reel worthy score from approximately 28 yards out cut the Lady Vol deficit to 2-1.

Currently tied for fourth on the the Lady Vol squad with two assists and has started nine of her fi rst 15 matches at UT in the midfi eld or up top...Played 16 minutes as a sub against Vanderbilt (10/1) and eight minutes versus Kentucky (10/3)...After assisting on Alexis Owens’ tying goal against Richmond (8/29), Bailey launched a shot from approximately 22 yards out that hit the left post and then the surprised keeper’s head before bouncing into the twine at 68:23 for her fi rst career match-winning goal...Was tabbed to the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament Team for her efforts against #12 Maryland and Richmond...Posted her fi rst career helper and point on Chelsea Hatcher’s goal just 3:33 into the WKU contest...Her fi rst match at Tennessee also proved to be her fi rst career collegiate start during the season opening 3-0 win over Western Kentucky (8/20).

MOLLY BAIRD -- RS-Senior -- Goalkeeper -- Raleigh, N.C.
