2020 TENNESSEE: MIDDLE AND EAST AFFILIATE EDUCATOR AWARD RECIPIENTS
WINNER
Jeffrey Wilkins Hendersonville High School
Hendersonville, Sumner County
Mr. Wilkins has been an educator for the past 19 years and has also taught Project Lead The Way engineering classes for the past 17 years. He currently teaches Intro to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics, Computer Science Foundations, AP CS Principles, and AP CS A. He is a trainer for POE in the summer, training other educators to take PLTW classes back to their schools. He runs 4 summer robotics camps for 3rd - 12th grade students and sponsor the robotics club, Codemandos, and Girls Who Code clubs at Hendersonville High School. Mr. Wilkins was the 2019 Tennessee: Middle and East Affiliate Educator Honorable Mention awardee. Mr. Wilkins states that “I routinely put girls together in groups at the beginning of the year together, so they can "prove" to the boys, that the are just as capable of having great ideas and work as they are. Once that is established, creating an environment where girls can be team leaders, lead programmers, and drivers of robots is much easier. They feel empowered and are much more likely to stick with CS and Engineering because someone looked out for them, and didn't just let them be in charge of documentation because they have good handwriting.”
HONORABLE MENTION
Mary Cooper Heritage High School Maryville, Blount County
Through her position as teacher, IT Department Chair, coach of our Esports teams, and membership in AAUW and ADK Teaching Sorority, Mrs. Cooper actively recruits , supports and promotes girls for the IT, STEM and Design courses and programs of study. She looks for creative, diverse, under represented and differently-abled girls to recruit for her classes, clubs, teams and competitions at the school, district, state and national level. Mrs. Cooper is part of a CTE STEAM team that recruits students to go to elementary feeder schools each semester to offer hands-on activities at the schools’ open houses. Her tech girls created a VR project with equipment they won from Makerminded in which they demonstrate and let the kids try out a VR experience. Mrs. Cooper recollects that “It is very satisfying to see little girls participate and it gives my girls a thrill to promote STEAM. The older girls strengthen their leadership, tech and marketing skills and become role models to the younger ones.”
