TONIGHT’S GAME The #3/3-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols (8-0) returns home for a one-game stand welcoming the Louisville Cardinals (6-3) to Thompson-Boling Arena for the fi rst time. The U of L enjoyed a trip to the 2009 Final Four last season and advanced to the championship game versus Connecticut.

WORTH NOTING ABOUT TONIGHT’S GAME •Of interest to Tennessee fans... the Lady Vols are ranked third in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls while the Vols are ranked in the eighth and nine spots, in the same respective polls. UT is one of three schools who can boast of their women’s and men’s teams in the top 10 -- The Duke women (ranked 7/8) and the Blue Devil men (7/7) and the North Carolina Tar Heel women (ranked 9/10) and the UNC men (10/10) all hold down elite spots in the polls. • Sophomore Shekinna Stricklen currently leads the team and ranks seventh in the SEC with a 16.1 ppg average... • Stricklen scored a team-high 19 points against Rutgers, the fi rst time she has led the team in scoring since she posted 25 in a season-opening victory over Baylor. • Stricklen boasts a team-best 32 assists and is 38-of-41 (92.7 percent) from the free throw line on the season. • Sophomore forward Glory Johnson is second on the team in both points per game (14.0) and rebounds per game (7.8). • Johnson had 10 points and seven boards against RU -- all in the second half after she spent practically the entire fi rst half on the bench with two offensive fouls. She had four offensive fouls for the game. • Redshirt sophomore center Kelley Cain has a conference-leading 19 blocks on the season. • Sophomore Alyssia Brewer has averaged 12.3 ppg over the last three games. The rangy lefty also leads the SEC in fi eld goal percentage (.656). LADY VOLS AT A GLANCE This is the Lady Vols’ 36th season under Head Coach Pat Summitt… She will start a senior-less team for the fi rst time in her tenure... Summitt has compiled a staggering 1,013-193 overall record… Collected her record 1000th coaching win with a 73-43 decision over Georgia on Feb. 5, 2009… She passed Dean Smith (879 wins) for most NCAA collegiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 victory over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005 …Her 2006-07 and 2007-08 squads were crowned as the NCAA Champions producing the program’s seventh and eighth titles…Last season, UT fi nished with a 22-11 overall record and lost in the First Round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. OUR SCHEDULE THIS WEEK Following a light schedule last week -- one game against Rutgers -- Tennessee is back in action over the next week facing BIG EAST foe, Louisville on Dec. 16 in Thompson-Boling Arena at 7 p.m. (SportSouth). The next day, the team heads to the West Coast for a Dec. 19 meeting at #2-ranked Stanford and a Dec. 22 contest at the University of San Francisco and then breaks for the Christmas holidays. ON THIS DAY IN LADY VOL BASKETBALL HISTORY UT is 9-3 in games played on Dec. 16. The Lady Vols are 2-1 at home, 4-1 on the road and 3-1 on neutral courts. The last time out on Dec. 16, the #1-ranked Lady Vols defeated Gonzaga, 97-73, in Knoxville, in 2007.

LOOKING BACK Last year at this time, the #7/10-ranked Lady Vols were 7-2 on the campaign after losing to #6/5 Texas, 73-59, in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns handed UT loss number two on the season.

Lady Vols hold off a pesky Rutgers squad behind Shekinna Stricklen’s 19 pts and 5 stls in Madison Square Garden

The Cardinals will become the 180th all-time team and 12th current BIG EAST team to face UT.

Stricklen scored eight of UT’s 11 overtime points en route to 25 for the game to topple the #3/4-ranked Cardinal in 2008.

Glory Johnson posted a double double (17 pts, 12 rebs) in her fi rst career game in the Orange & White vs. USF.

Angie Bjorklund’s six threes spurred her to tie a career-high with 29 points as UT snapped ODU’s 29-game home winning streak.Last season, the Sooners foiled Coach Summitt’s fi rst attempt at career win No. 1,000. Baugh re-injured her ACL in OKC.Stricklen’s double double (13 pts, 10 rebs) helped make S.C. the fourth team the Lady Vols have beaten 40 times.

After posting two wins against MSU last season, the Bulldogs re-main the only SEC school to have never beaten UT.

Bjorklund knocked down six threes and scored 25 points against UF in the SEC Tourney to avenge the Gators regular season win.

On Senior Day, Alex Fuller scored 17 points and grabbed 14 re-bounds to keep Vandy from its fi rst win in Knoxville.The Lady Vols downed the Lady Bulldogs for Coach Summitt’s 1,000th career win on Feb. 5 behind Johnson’s 20 pt, 10 reb game.

Bjorklund’s 21 points were not enough as the Lady Tigers downed UT 63-61 in Baton Rouge last season.

The Tigers became the fi rst team since 2003-04 to beat UT twice in a season.UT hasn’t lost to the Gamecocks since Jan. 23, 1980, in Columbia, a streak of 36 consecutive games.Stricklen scored 11 points in her fi rst trip back to her home state of Arkansas, and UT won 76-67.

Since 2002, the series record is 9-7 in favor of UT with an average score of 62.7 for LSU and 61.8 for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee owns a 42-2 record all-time against the Crimson Tide, and haven’t lost to UA since March 3, 1984.

UT boasts an 11-4 mark all-time on Valentine’s Day, including a 7-1 record at home.

Alex Fuller was the only Lady Vol in double fi gures, with 12 points, as UT lost, 74-58, in Nashville last season.

The Lady Vols have won 17 straight against Ole Miss, dating to Feb. 4, 1996, when the Rebels claimed a 73-51 win in Oxford.

Four Lady Vols scored in double fi gures as UT knocked off UK, 69-64, in Knoxville to open SEC play last season.In the only meeting last year, Bjorklund hit a three-pointer with eight seconds left to beat the Rebels, 60-59.In 2009, UT played on the fi rst day of the SEC Tournament for only the second time.

THE 4-1-1 ON LOUISVILLE In the last outing for Louisville before heading to Knoxville to meet Tennessee, the Cardinals shellacked IUPUI on Sunday after-noon by a score of 88-58. Five UofL players scored in double fi gures, led by sophomore guard Becky Burke’s 19 points. Redshirt senior center Chauntise Wright posted 18 points and seven boards in 17 minutes of action. Monique Reid, a sophomore forward from Louisville, had a team-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Nikki Burton and sophomore forward Gwen Rucker each chipped in 12 points and junior Laura Terry added 11. The Cardinals com-pletely dominated IUPUI forcing 23 turnovers and holding the Jaguars to just 37.1 percent from the fi eld on 62 attempts. Louisville shot 29-of-33 from the free throw line in the game.

OPENING NEW UL ARENA NEXT YEAR Next season, the Tennessee Lady Vols will be Louisville’s season-opening opponent when the new U of L Downtown Arena opens. The game is scheduled for Nov. 12.

RUCKER WAS JUST IN KNOXVILLE Don’t be surprised if 6-1 sophomore post Gwen Rucker is leading her Louisville teammates into Thompson-Boling Arena on Wednesday night. The two-sport standout (vol-leyball/basketball) was recently in Knoxville and Thompson-Boling Arena for the First/Second Rounds of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament on Dec. 4 as the Cardinals fell to Minnesota 3-1 in the fi rst round.

UT VERSUS THE BIG EAST Tennessee has taken on 11 of the 16 teams in the BIG EAST Conference all-time and sports a 79-19 (.804) record. Only three teams have claimed victories over UT. UConn has topped Tennessee 13 times while Cincin-nati and Rutgers have defeated UT on three

occasions each.

THIRD MOST PLAYED CONFERENCE Outside of games in the Southeastern Con-ference (474 total), the Lady Vols have faced teams in the BIG EAST in the third-most number of games -- 98. That is preceded by 99 games with teams from the ACC. UT has played in 68 games versus Pac 10 opponents, 61 games against both the Ohio Valley and Southern Con-ferences and 60 contests against the Big 12 all-time.

BEST STARTS TO OPEN THE SEASON The 8-0 start to begin the 2009-10 cam-paign is tied for the ninth best start in Lady Vol program history. All-time, there have been 15 perfect starts to a season (of at least 7 wins).

FIRST MEETING WITH LOUISVILLE Tonight’s game marks the fi rst-ever meeting between Tennessee and Louisville. The Cardinals are the 180th team that UT has faced all-time and the 12th current BIG EAST foe that the Lady Vols have played.

UT-LOUISVILLE FACING THE RANKED Tennessee is slated to face 12 ranked teams in 14 games this season while Lou-isville is expected to face fi ve ranked teams in fi ve games. UT is 3-0 against ranked op-ponents this season while Louisville is 0-0.

COMMON OPPONENTS Both teams have faced Middle Ten-nessee State this season... the Lady Vols defeated MTSU, 69-52, in a sold-out arena in Murfreesboro on Nov. 25, while Louisville lost to the Blue Raiders, 94-84, in Louisville on Dec. 9. Both schools will also face Ken-tucky, Rutgers and Old Dominion. Louisville defeated Old Dominion, 82-75, on Nov. 28 in Cancun, Mexico and will play Kentucky on Dec. 20 and Rutgers on March 1. Tennes-see defeated Rutgers, 68-54, on Dec. 13 in Madison Square Garden and will face Old Dominion on Dec. 30 and Kentucky on Feb. 25.

STATE OF KENTUCKY OPPOSITION Since 1922, Tennessee Lady Vol teams have battled basketball opposition in the border state of Kentucky. UT has faced fi ve teams from the Bluegrass State and pro-duced a 65-10 overall record all-time. The Lady Vols are 5-0 against Cumberland, 8-1 vs. Eastern Kentucky, 44-7 over the Ken-tucky Wildcats, 1-1 vs. Union and 7-1 when facing Western Kentucky. One of the earliest road trips on record for a women’s basketball team from the Uni-versity of Tennessee occurred when the “Vo-lettes” traveled by train to face Cumberland in 1922. By 1924, a two-game road trip via train was played at Cincinnati on Feb. 26 and at Cumberland on Feb. 27.

ANGIE B LOOKING TOWARD 1,000 POINTS Lady Vol junior Angie Bjorklund is now just 227 points away from 1,000 career points. She scored 318 as a rookie and 344 as a sophomore. This sea-son, she has 111 to date for a career total of 773. She will become the 34th all-time player to reach the 1,000 point club.

YOU’D TELL ME I WAS LYING... If I told you that a Lady Vol was ranked 1 in Southeastern Conference Field Goal accuracy this week. Sophomore Alyssia Brewer is leading the way shooting .656 (21-32) for seven games. Last season, Brewer shot 41 percent on the year (73-178).

RAISING CAIN UT redshirt sophomore center Kelley Cain re-turned to the starting line-up against Rutgers. Cain suffered a concussion against UCLA on Nov. 28 and was held out of the George Washington game on Dec. 1. Cain was cleared to play against #17-ranked Texas on Dec. 6 and came off the bench to score 12 points (6-6 FG), grab six boards and swat away four shots. She followed that up with a nine point, nine rebound and six blocked shot performance against Rutgers.

GOT THE PATCH Following the reporting of grades for the Fall semester a few more Lady Vols are hoping to add a patch to their uniforms. Currently, six Lady Vols are proudly displaying VOLScholar patches on their jerseys this semester -- Briana Bass, Angie Bjorklund, Kelley

Cain, Glory Johnson, Alicia Manning and Sydney Smallbone. The VOLScholar program is an initiative of UT’s Thornton Athletics Student Life Center which is a comprehensive academic and citizenship-building program that has gained enthu-siastic support from UT’s men’s and women’s ath-letic teams. Student-athletes earn the right to wear the VOLScholar patch on their uniform by achieving a 3.0 grade-point average during the previous fall and/or spring semester.

STRICK HONORED Lady Vol sophomore Shekinna Stricklen was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and Lady Vol Athlete of the Week for the sec-ond time this season (Nov. 30-Dec. 6).In the UT’s


Game Notes • Tennessee vs. Louisville • Dec. 16, 2009fi rst game of the week against George Washington, Stricklen notched her fourth career double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. She was 8-of-13 from the fi eld to help Tennessee to a 93-53 win over the Colonials. Against #17/17 Texas on Dec. 6, Stricklen tallied her 27th career double fi gure scor-ing game with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The Morrilton, Ark., native also added six rebounds and fi ve assists against the Longhorns. For the week, Stricklen averaged 15.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 3.0 apg, and shot 60.9 percent from the fi eld in leading UT to average wins of 30.0 points.

SOLID SHOWING AGAINST THE HORNS Against #17-ranked Texas, Tennessee used an 8-0 run to build an 11-5 lead (at 14:55) and then put together a 12-0 run over 4:55 to take a 31-18 lead with 5:29 to play in the fi rst half. UT’s largest defi cit of the fi rst half was two at 18:23; it’s largest lead was 17 at 0:27. Tennessee led at the half for the fi fth time this season. In those games, UT is 5-0. Texas went without a point from the 3:12 mark of the fi rst half to the 16:29 point of the second, allowing Tennessee a 14-0 run to build a 48-24 lead. Ten-nessee outrebounded Texas 42-41; UT has led on the boards in all seven games

IS THERE A BIG 12 DIVISION FOR US? This season, Tennessee might qualify for divi-sional play in the Big 12. The Lady Vols have four opponents on its schedule from that conference. UT defeated #7/4 Baylor in Knoxville (74-65)... trav-eled to San Antonio and knocked off Texas Tech, 91-53 and then defeated #17 Texas, 78-58, on Dec. 6. Oklahoma comes to town on Jan. 3 to Thomp-son-Boling Arena.

SAPULPA WAS IN THE HOUSE Sophomore post Alyssia Brewer of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, showed up in a big way against George Washington on Dec. 1. UT was without starting center Kelley Cain who was being held out due to a concussion suffered in the UCLA game. The 6’3” Brewer came in the fi rst half at the 14:49 mark and scored four quick layups and a free throw in eight minutes to record nine points in the opening stanza. In the second half, she was inserted at the 14:13 mark and played the rest of the game totaling 14 second stanza points for a career high 23 points (11-15 FG) to go along with seven rebounds.

COACH DLady Vol assistant basketball coach Daedra

Charles-Furlow, affectionately known as “Coach D,” announced on Dec. 1 that she is dealing with medical issues. “I am dealing with some personal medical issues at this time,” said Charles-Furlow. “It is possible that there may be times when I am un-able to travel. For that reason, I decided to make this announcement since it will affect my duties as recruiting coordinator.” A former Lady Vol Olympian and All-American, Charles-Furlow joined the Lady Vol staff in May 2008 replacing Nikki Caldwell who accepted the head coaching position at UCLA. “Daedra’s health and well-being is our fi rst con-cern,” said head coach Pat Summitt. “While she will continue with her assistant coaching duties on the bench, there may be times when, as the basketball recruiting coordinator, she is unable to travel. Dae-dra is so passionate about recruiting our student-athletes,” said Summitt. “During the next several months she needs to be focusing on her health. For that reason, I will be designating my special assis-tant, Stephanie Glance, to fi ll this temporary role.”

CROWDS A PLENTY Playing in front of huge crowds is nothing new

to Tennessee Lady Vol basketball but the week of Nov. 22-28 was one to note. In three games (two on the road), the Lady Vols played in front of a to-tal of 37,873 fans (an average of 12,624 per game) – including two record-breaking crowds on the road. On Nov. 25 at Middle Tennessee State, a new record crowd of 11,802 was on hand for the Thanksgiving eve clash. MTSU’s Murphy Center’s capacity is listed at 11,520. On Nov. 22 at Virginia, a new record crowd of 11,895 crammed the stands on “Hotdog Night” at the John Paul Jones Arena. Tennessee had one game at home during that span against UCLA on Nov. 28 where 14,176 turned out for a matinee contest. Last season, Tennessee played in front of 17 crowds of 10,000-plus.

NOGGIN KNOCKERS The Lady Vols only had nine players avail-able to play against George Washington on Dec. 1. Tennessee starting sophomore pivot Kelley Cain missed the game with George Washington due to a concussion suffered in the UCLA game after dropping in eight points and grabbing 11 rebounds against the Bruins. Cain also missed some time last season after suffering a concussion in practice. She has started fi ve games this season and aver-ages 8.4 ppg and 8.6 rpg.

CALLING ALL POSTS The Lady Vols went into the game with George Washington on Dec. 1 pretty thin in the post. Side-lined were four post players -- 6’1” Amber Gray and 6’3” Faith Dupree for the season; 6’4” Vicki Baugh who is coming back from a torn ACL and 6’6” Kelley Cain who will miss due to a concussion. That left 6’1” rookie Taber Spani and a pair of 6’3” sopho-mores in Glory Johnson and Alyssia Brewer to shore up the middle for the Lady Vols.

BJORKLUND MOVING THE CHAINS Tennessee junior sharpshooter Angie Bjork-lund has climbed into sole possession of fourth place on the Tennessee three-point career charts. She has 153 made treys for her career moving her ahead of Shannon Bobbitt (2006-08). Ahead of Bjorklund are Brittany Jackson in third with 161...Kara Lawson in second with 256 and Shanna Zol-man leading the pack with 266.

STAFFERS HAVE -- NEVER A FORMER PLAYER ...have come back and dropped an “L” on Coach Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols. Former Tennessee player and assistant coach Nikki Caldwell looked like her UCLA Bruins might be the fi rst to pull the upset on Nov. 28 in Knoxville. The Bruins grabbed a 10-point fi rst half lead and looked very confi dent heading into the locker room leading 27-25 at the break. In the Tennessee locker room, Summitt was imploring her team for no more “negative history.” Referring back to last season when her young Lady Vols were responsible for a number of “negative his-tory fi rsts.” The roll call goes like this: Sylvia Hatchell, Sharon Fanning, Jane Albright, Lea Henry, Nancy Darsch, Trish Roberts, Mickie DeMoss, Matthew Mitchell, Kellie Jolly Harper and Tanya Haave. UT coach Pat Summitt has faced many former players and assis-tant coaches in a variety of games thru the years but no former Lady Vol player has ever knocked off her mentor. Former assistant Carolyn Peck was the fi rst to record a victory over her former boss. While at Purdue, Peck handed Summitt a 78-68 loss on Nov.15, 1998 in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic in West Lafayette, Ind. The defeat snapped UT’s 46-game consecutive winning streak (that was second only to Louisiana Tech’s NCAA all-time 54-game winning streak). Former assistants Mickie DeMoss and last year Matthew Mitchell turned the trick as a head coaches at Kentucky, (DeMoss 66-63, on Jan. 26, 2006 and Mitchell 66-56 on Feb. 19, 2009), and Sylvia Hatchell managed to pull off the feat twice at North Carolina (75-63 on Mar. 28, 2006 and 70-57, Dec. 3, 2006). Former Lady Vol players turned head coaches have been less successful. Former Lady Vol All-America Patricia Roberts tried while head coach at Maine (0-2, lost 77-64 on Dec. 13, 1990 and 86-71 on Nov. 24, 1991). Former Lady Vol Olympian and point guard Lea Henry faced Summitt in the NCAA Tournament with her Georgia State team and lost 98-68 on Mar. 15, 2002. Next to try to knock off Summitt was Kellie Jolly Harper with her Western Carolina team on Mar. 20, 2005. The Lady Catamounts lost 94-43. The most recent former Lady Vol hoopsters to take on their former coach: UT All-American and San Francisco head coach Tanya Haave. “LaMachine’s” Dons fell to UT on Nov. 15, 2008, 68-39. A little over a week later, Harper’s WCU team fell to Summitt’s Lady Vols, 83-56, on Nov. 25, 2008. The next player to try the knock-off - -UCLA’s Nikki Caldwell.

HOME SWEET HOME Much is made of the Lady Vols palatial locker room in Thompson-Boling Arena. The team lost the right to use the locker room following back-to-back losses last season to #7/10-ranked Duke (Feb. 16, 62-54) and Kentucky (Feb. 19, 66-56). Following the Lady Vols win over at #12/17-ranked Virginia on Nov. 22, 2009, Coach Pat Summitt announced in the post game talk to the team that they had earned their locker room back to thunderous cheers from the team.

RANKED TIDBITS Tennessee is 3-0 against ranked opponents this season in seven total games played. The Lady Vols opened the season with a 74-65 win over #7/4-ranked Baylor... took a 77-63 win on the road at #12/17-ranked Virginia and knocked off #17-ranked Texas, 78-58. Next game against a ranked oppo-nent will come against #2-ranked Stanford on Dec.

DUPREE DEALS WITH BACK PROBLEMS University of Tennessee Lady Vol Head Bas-ketball Coach Pat Summitt announced on Nov. 23, 2009, that freshman center Faith Dupree will be sidelined this season. “Faith has been experiencing recurrent lower back pain,” explained Summitt. “Our medical staff (Director of Sports Medicine Jenny Moshak, team orthopaedist Dr. Greg Mathien and team physician Dr. Becky Morgan) felt that the best course of action was to spend this season treating her. “We are disappointed for Faith and what she means to our team,” said Summitt. “She worked re-ally hard in the preseason drills and conditioning but now she needs time to focus on getting her back healthy.” Moshak, University of Tennessee Associ-ate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, has been treating Dupree for back pain for several weeks. “We are going to use this year to explore treatment options and provide aggressive rehabilitation,” said Moshak. Dupree, a 6-3 freshman from Knoxville, Tenn., appeared in the fi rst two games of the sea-son. Against #7/4-ranked Baylor she logged four minutes and grabbed a rebound. In San Antonio at the ESPNU Road to the Championship, she played 18 minutes and tossed in fi ve points, grabbed six re-bounds and had three assists in 18 minutes against Texas Tech. Tennessee’s roster now drops to 11 active players for the 2009-10 season. Also sitting out this year, following both shoulder and brain sur-gery, is 6-1 sophomore forward Amber Gray of West Chester, Ohio.

JOINING THE LADY VOL FOLD University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball head coach Pat Summitt announced the early sign-ing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2010-11 academic school year. Join-ing the eight-time NCAA Champions are signees Lauren Avant, a 5’9”, guard from Memphis, Tenn., (The Lausanne Collegiate School) and Meighan Simmons, a 5’9” guard from Byron P. Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas.

UNBROKEN CIRCLE The 2009-10 Lady Vols are taking their “Circle of Infl uence” media guide them into a postgame center court jump circle huddle with their oppo-nents. Before the game with Baylor, UT junior Angie Bjorklund invited the Lady Bears to join them for a postgame prayer. In late December, the Wooden Award Committee will release the Midseason Top 20 list, followed in March by the National Ballot, consist-ing of approximately 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also mak-ing progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The Women’s Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round during the NCAA Tourna-ment. The 34th annual Wooden Award ceremony, which will include the announcement of the Men’s and Women’s Wooden Award, and the presenta-tion of the Wooden Award All-American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, will take place the weekend of April 9-11, 2010.

STRICKLEN IS ON THE NAISMITH LIST Lady Vol sophomore Shekinna Stricklen has been named to the Naismith Player of the Year “watch list.” The watch list was compiled by the At-lanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previ-ous year and expectations for the 2009-10 college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded at the 2010 NCAA Wom-en’s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.

STRICKLEN DOUBLES UP ACCOLADES Lady Vol sophomore Shekinna Stricklen was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and Lady Vol Athlete of the Week (Nov. 9-15)after leading the No. 8/9-ranked Lady Vols to a 74-65 win over the No. 7/4-ranked Baylor Lady Bears on Nov. 15 at Thompson-Boling Arena to open the 2009-10 season. The Morrilton, Ark., native scored 25 points, grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds, dished out fi ve assists and tallied three steals. The game against the Lady Bears marked Stricklen’s third career double-double. Her 25 points were one off of her career-high 26 points, which were scored at No. 6/5-ranked Auburn last season.

600TH WIN Tennessee’s win over Baylor to open the 2009-10 season was Lady Vol Coach Pat Sum-mitt’s 600th victory over a non-conference team. She is now 604-129 versus non-conference oppo-sition over 36 seasons.

ESPNU ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP The Lady Vols took the ESPNU Road to the Championship (formerly the ESPNU Women’s Bas-ketball Invitational) when it defeated Texas Tech in Nov. 17. The preseason women’s basketball dou-bleheader, UConn defeated Texas in the night cap, is played in the same city as the women’s NCAA championship. The ESPNU Road to the Champi-onship is an ESPN Regional TV (ERT) owned and operated event. San Antonio is the host city for the 2010 NCAA women’s basketball championship.

It’s a fact that Tennessee has produced some of the greatest players ever in women’s collegiate basketball. It’s a little known fact that there has only been one double-fi gure rebounder in the history of the program -- Olympian and Kodak All-American Patricia Roberts. Roberts hauled in 14.2 rpg (467 total) in her only season as a Lady Vol in 1976-77. She also claimed scoring honors with 29.9 ppg (987 points). In 2006-07, Candace Parker came the closest to a double-fi gure rebounding average but had to settle for 9.8 rpg.

POLLSTERS The Tennessee Lady Vols started the season in somewhat unfamiliar territory in the Top 25 Pre-season polls. The Associated Press placed UT in the eighth position to start the season, while the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll had UT in ninth spot. Last season, UT started in seventh in the AP and sixth in the coaches’ poll. Tennessee’s start in the AP poll is the lowest since the 1985-86 season when UT started in the number nine spot.

HIGH SCHOOL TO LADY VOL TEAMMATES This season marks the fourth time in Lady Vol Basketball history (under Summitt) that high school teammates are taking to the fl oor in a Tennessee uniform. Freshman post Faith Dupree joins fel-low Webb School teammate and UT sophomore Glory Johnson in the line-up this season. Previ-ously, Cherokee H.S. (Canton, Ga.) teammates Debbie Groover and Cindy Ely roamed the paint from 1977-81; Baldwin Co. H.S. (Milledgeville, Ga.) teammates Val Freeman and Lisa Webb played from 1983-88 -- both even tore ACLs one week apart as sophomores, and Shelbyville Central H.S. (Tenn.) teammates Michelle Johnson and Tiffany Woosley played during the 1991-95 seasons.

UT’S SEASON-OPENERS UNDER SUMMITT Over the last 36 years on opening day, the Lady Vols have won 33 times and lost just three contests. Coach Pat Summitt lost her very fi rst game as a college head coach -- a heartbreak-ing one-point decision at home in Alumni Gym to Mercer, 84-83, on Dec. 7, 1974. The next time UT lost an opening game was in Knoxville on Nov. 21, 1981, to Stephen F. Austin, 80-74, in Stokely Athletics Center. Most recently, UT fell in their fi rst contest of the 1999-2000 campaign dropping a 69-64 decision to Louisiana Tech on Nov. 14, 1999 in Thompson-Boling Arena. Until the loss to the Lady

After Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt passed Dean Smith for most NCAA collegiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 win over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005, UT named the TBA court, “The Summitt.” The fl oor had a complete overhaul with permanent lo-gos of both the Lady Vols and Vols painted directly in front of the scorer’s table; the free throw lanes were painted orange with “SEC” reversed out; the giant jump circle/mid-court TENNESSEE was given a new brighter color scheme, and “The Summitt,” Coach Summitt’s actual signature adorns the side-lines opposite the team benches.

300 WINS IN TBA Tennessee recorded its 300th win in Thomp-son-Boling Arena when the Lady Vols defeated the Stanford Cardinal, 79-69 OT on Dec. 21, 2008. Seven years earlier, UT grabbed its 200th TBA win over the University of Southern California on Nov. 18, 2001, 106-66. UT has now amassed a 311-20 (.942) record since the Orange and White moved into the Thompson-Boling Arena to start the 1987-88 season 22-years ago. Along the way, the Lady Vols have produced nine fl awless home records in 1988-89 (15-0), 1991-92 (14-0), 1992-93 (13-0), 1993-94 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (16-0), 1998-99 (14-0), 2000-01 (15-0) and 2002-03 (16-0). UT also regis-tered an NCAA record 69-game home court-winning streak from Feb. 1, 1991 thru Jan. 2, 1996.

JUST 20 LOSSES The Tennessee Lady Vols rarely lose at home. In fact, since moving to the Thompson-Boling Arena for the 1987-88 campaign, UT has lost two games in one season just seven times. UT lost two games in TBA during the inaugural 1987-88 campaign, 1996-97, 1999-00, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2008-09 seasons. The 20 all-time losses at TBA have come at the hands of just 10 teams: Virginia (2008), Florida (2006), LSU (2008, 2006), Duke (2009, 2007, 2004), Connecticut (2004, 2002, 2000, 1996), Louisi-ana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stanford (1996) and Auburn (1988).

HOME SWEET HOME -- OVER 400 HOME WINS The victory over Georgia on Jan. 31, 2005, was the Lady Vols 400th home win since Pat Sum-mitt took over as head coach in 1974. Summitt has won 91.4 percent of all home games in 36 years pro-ducing a 461-45 overall record. Home losses (in the Summitt era) include: six in Alumni Gym from 1974-76; 19 in Stokely Athletics Center from 1976-87; and 20 in Thompson-Boling Arena.

100 POINT GAMES Since 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the century mark 69 times. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven games to lead the NCAA.

IN OVERTIME Tennessee is 26-14 all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a year was tied in 2003-04 with four as the Lady Vols went 3-1 in overtime los-ing to Georgia, 68-66, and defeating Auburn, 68-61, DePaul, 96-89, and Stanford, 70-66. It tied the mark set in 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99. UT’s 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime. UT’s most recent OT affair was a 79-69 win over Stanford on Dec. 21, 2008, at home.

A LOOK AT ATTENDANCE The Tennessee Lady Vols staying power with

the home fans is evidenced by the huge numbers who have turned out for games in Knoxville since 1990. Tennessee has won the attendance chal-lenge 14 out of the last 20 years.

LADY VOL STREAKS The Lady Vols last loss at home was against Duke, 62-54, on Feb. 16, 2009, since then UT has won six home games. The last time UT lost on the road was on Feb. 26, 2009 at LSU, since then, UT has won two road games. The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Ball State, 71-55, in the 2009 NCAA First Round game on Mar. 22, 2009. Since that time, UT is 2-0 on a neutral court.

OVER 500 GAMES VS. RANKED Tennessee’s game versus #12 Georgia on Feb. 16, 2006 was the Lady Vols’ 500th all-time ver-sus a ranked team since the inception of the polls in 1976. UT is an amazing 416-156 (.725) versus ranked teams. The 2008-09 Lady Vols were a dis-mal 4-8 versus ranked teams.

SEC COACHES TAB LADY VOLS The Southeastern Conference unveiled its sixth annual women’s basketball preseason All-SEC fi rst and second teams, Thurs., Oct. 30, to tip-off the 2009-10 season of SEC women’s basketball. In ad-dition, the coaches voted on a predicted order of fi n-ish, overall champion and a preseason Player of the Year. In the closet vote yet, Tennessee was pre-dicted to win the Southeastern Conference regular season championship over LSU by one vote. The Lady Vols were 22-11, 9-5 in the SEC last season, while LSU fi nished 19-11, 10-4 in conference play. Mississippi State, Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina round out the top half of the league with Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Alabama rounding out the lower half. LSU senior guard Allison Hightower was named SEC Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. LADY VOLS PICKED NUMBER TWO BY MEDIA The Tennessee Lady Vols were predicted to fi nish second in the Southeastern Conference this season following a vote by a select panel of both SEC and national media members. LSU was picked to win the 2010 SEC women’s basketball championship. Two Lady Vol players were recognized on the preseason All-SEC Team as the media picked sophomore Shekinna Stricklen for the First Team and junior sharpshooter Angie Bjorklund for the Second Team. LSU’s Allison High-tower was the overwhelming choice of the media for SEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year with 18 votes, the remaining votes were for LSU’s Lasondra Barrett and Tennessee’s Angie Bjorklund. ELITE COMPANY Rookie forward/guard Taber Spani be-came the 13th Lady Vol player to start her very fi rst game as a Lady Vol when she started against Baylor. Last season, when Coach Pat Summitt started freshmen Shekinna Stricklen and Glory Johnson against San Francisco, it marked only the 11th and 12th time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very fi rst game at Tennessee. The list of open-ing day rookie starters: Taber Spani 2009, Glory Johnson and Shekinna Stricklen, 2008, Angie Bjorklund, 2007, Candace Parker, 2005, Shyra Ely 2001, Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jack-son 1999, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Hold-sclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.

THE NOD Last season, a record number of players – FIVE – were called on to start for the Lady Vols as rookies… Shekinna Stricklen (starter number 53), Glory Johnson (number 54), Briana Bass (55), Alicia Manning (56) and Kelley Cain (57) all earned starting assignments becoming the 53rd-57th freshmen to earn the honor. Angie Bjorklund became the 52nd all-time Lady Vol to start dur-ing her freshman season –she started in 30 of 38 games. Previously, Cait McMahan earned a start at point guard versus Louisiana Tech during her freshman season. Prior to Cait’s starting nod, then-redshirt freshman Candace Parker played and started in all 36 games her rookie season in 2005-06. A season earlier, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt liked what she saw out of the 2004-05 rookie class as two players earned starting nods during the season. Nicky Anosike played in all 35 games with 25 starting assignments and Alexis Hornbuckle played in all 35 games with 21 starts. This duo became the 48th and 49th rookies all-time to earn starting assignments at UT as rook-ies. The 2001-02 rookie class found three play-ers earn a starting nod as Loree Moore, Shyra Ely and Brittany Jackson all started at some point in their rookie careers.

EXHIBITION 1: CARSON-NEWMAN Six players reached double fi gures and No. 8 Tennessee defeated Carson-Newman 124-34 in an exhibition game Thursday night in Thompson-Boling Arena. Sophomore Glory Johnson led the way with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Angie Bjorklund scored 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting before making her exit midway through the second half. At one point after halftime, Bjorklund had scored more points than Carson-Newman. “We wanted to focus on what the team brought at both ends,” UT coach Pat Summitt said. “Last year, we would sometimes play down to the level of our competition. Tonight, we maintained our intensity. Last year, we’d get a lead and think the game was over. Tonight, we were thinking execution.” Freshman guard Taber Spani started and scored 17 points in her fi rst game as a Lady Vol. Alicia Manning added 18 points, and Kelley Cain had 16 points. Shekinna Stricklen chipped in 12 points, 10 of which came in the fi rst half. No other freshmen played until forward Kamiko Williams, who scored two points on 1-of-2 shooting, entered with about 6:21 remaining in the game. Faith Dupree did not play. For the game, Tennessee hit 62 percent of its shots from the fi eld, including a 45-percent clip from beyond the 3-point line. Bjorklund and Spani both hit a team-high three 3-pointers. The Lady Vols opened the game on a 16-3 run and cruised to a 64-18 lead at halftime, thanks in large part to 18 fi rst-half turnovers by Carson-Newman. Tennessee scored 22 points off turnovers in the opening half and used their considerable size advantage inside to outscore the Lady Eagles 34-8 inside over the same span. The Lady Vols defeated Carson-Newman 135-55 in an exhibition game last year and have now scored more than 100 points in fi ve of their last six exhibition games against the Division II school. “Overall, I was pleased,” Summitt said. “We played well together. Sometimes our defense was too tight. We weren’t perfect, but we’ve got some good fi lm to look at.”

EXHIBITION 2: DELTA STATE Kelley Cain breezed to a double-double Monday night in a 79-46 exhibition victory over Delta State in Thompson-Boling Arena. Cain, who fi nished with a game-high 20 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocked shots in just 19 minutes of play, loomed large over the Lady Statesmen, whose tallest player still gave up four inches to Tennessee’s 6-foot-6 center. “When she’s playing that way, you can’t stop it,” Lady Vols guard Angie Bjorklund said. “Having that inside presence really helps us, especially in the outside game. Coach (Pat) Summitt says that you win with rebounding and defense and she’s a huge part of that.” Tennessee opened on an 11-0 run and used another 11-0 run to take a 22-5 lead early in the fi rst half. Delta State, ranked No. 4 in Division II, made a couple charges in the second half but never seriously posed a threat. “I wasn’t real impressed with what did in the fi rst half,” Summitt said. “We played in spurts in the second half. The bright spots for us were Kelley Cain and Taber Spani.” Despite coming off the bench in favor of sophomore Glory Johnson, Spani notched a double-double of her own with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Seven of those boards came on the offensive end. “Taber is just a player,” Summitt said. “She just wants to play. It doesn’t matter where. She has a great feel for the game.” Angie Bjorklund scored 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting, while Shekinna Stricklen added 10 points and nine boards. Johnson fi nished with seven points on 2-of-6 shooting with two blocks and fi ve rebounds. Freshman Faith Dupree made her Lady Vols debut Monday, but failed to score in 10 minutes on the court. She did record a block and two steals. Point guard Bug Cooper paced Delta State with 15 points, but the Lady Statesmen shot just 26 percent from the fi eld and turned the ball over 19 times. Tennessee and Delta State last played in 1979 before Monday’s exhibition, but the two programs met in the 1977 AIAW Final Four where the Lady Statesmen defeated Tennessee to claim their third consecutive AIWA national title.

GAME 1: #7/4 BAYLOR The Tennessee Lady Vols offi cially opened the 2009-10 season against the No. 7/4-ranked Baylor Bears, and as in 33 other season openers under Head Coach Pat Summitt, the Lady Vols came away with a win, 74-65. Leading the way for Tennessee was sophomore Shekinna Stricklen, who played all 40 minutes on her way to her third career double double. The Morrilton, Ark., native scored 25 points - one off her career high - and grabbed 14 rebounds, establishing a new career best. Stricklen also dished out fi ve assists and grabbed three steals on her way to Player of the Game honors. The Lady Vols got off to a quick start, building a 10-3 lead nearly four minutes into the contest. However, the Lady Vols shooting would go cold as the Lady Bears took a 26-24 lead into the lockerroom. While UT mustered only 28.9 percent from the fi eld in the fi rst 20 minutes, the Lady Vol defense limited Baylor to only 29.2 percent shooting. The second half belonged to Tennessee, as the Lady Vols outscored Baylor 50-39 in the fi nal stanza. In addition to Stricklen, center Kelley Cain posted 13 of her 15 points in the second half. The Lady Vols used a 16-0 run from the 1:02 mark of the fi rst half to the 16:16 point of the second half to transform a six-point defi cit (20-26) into a 10-point lead (36-26). Junior Angie Bjorklund was the third Lady Vol to fi nish with double fi gures as she posted 13 points. Her three three-pointers moved the Spokane Valley, Wash., native into a tie for fi fth all-time with Sidney Spencer in the Tennessee record books with 133 career triples made. Sophomore Glory Johnson was the only Lady Vol to fi nish with more than four points. The Knoxville native tallied nine points to go with seven rebounds and four steals in 33 minutes of action.

GAME 2: TEXAS TECH The Tennessee Lady Vols made their fi rst road trip of the season and handed the Texas Tech Lady Raiders a 91-53 loss at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. The two sides squared off as part of the ESPNU “Road to the Championsip” - the 2010 NCAA Final Four will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The Lady Raiders grabbed the early lead, going up 6-2 just over four minutes into the contest. The Lady Vols would respond in a big way. Tennessee went on a 24-2 tear over 10:55 to build a 26-8 lead with just under fi ve minutes to play before the halftime horn. Leading the way for UT in the fi rst stanza were sophomores Shekinna Stricklen and Glory Johnson, who each tallied nine fi rst half points and fi ve rebounds. Johnson fi nished the contest with 17 points and six boards, while Stricklen tossed in 16 points, pulled down seven boards and dished out fi ve assists. Tennessee was not about to let up in the second half, and opened the second period on a 32-4 run over the fi rst six minutes of the half. Junior Angie Bjorklund keyed the run with nine points on three three-pointers over a mere 25 seconds, giving UT a 51-21 lead with 15:56 to play. For the game, the Lady Vol offense was not dependent solely on Johnson and Stricklen. Bjorklund fi nished with 14 points - all of which came in the second half - to go with four boards and two assists. Leading the way for the Lady Vols with a game high 18 points was freshman Taber Spani, 14 of which came in the second half. After shooting just 1-of-3 in the fi rst half, the rookie was 4-of-6 in the fi nal 20 minutes and also pulled down six boards. Sophomore Alicia Manning started her fi rst game of the season, and tallied eight points and a game high nine rebounds. GAME 3: #12/17 VIRGINIA Junior Angie Bjorklund was feeling it on Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena against #12/17 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. Monica Wright, the Cavaliers preseason All-American, said so. “She tore it up tonight. She was just so hot,” said Wright. Bjorklund fi nished with a game high 24 points, including fi ve three pointers in leading the #6/5 Lady Vols to a 77-63 win in a hostile JPJ Arena on Nov. 22. It was the Spokane Valley, Wash., native’s 34th career double digit scoring game and the seventh outing in her time at Rocky Top that she has scored at least 20 in a game. Bjorklund’s shooting from beyond the arc was instrumental for the Lady Vols. Midway through the fi rst half, she scored six points in 21 seconds to give UT a 32-19 lead. Not even two minutes into the second half, the Cavaliers had cut the Tennessee lead to 42-39, when Bjorklund converted a four-point play which silenced the record-crowd of 11,895. On the next play at the defensive end, she grabbed the rebound, came down the fl oor and found freshman Taber Spani for a three-pointer to put UT up 49-39. A trio of Tennessee sophomores also had a big impact on the win. Knoxville native Glory Johnson scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. In addition, Johnson was charged with defending Wright, who scored 35 against UT a year ago, but was held to 21 this time around. Shekinna Stricklen scored 20 points - her sixth career 20-point plus performance - grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a season-high six assists. Center Kelley Cain was limited to only six points, but her inside presence opened the perimeter up for the Lady Vol guards. Cain added six rebounds and six blocks, one off her career high and tied for third best in a single game for Tennessee. The Lady Vols owned the rebounding edge, 46-42, for the third time in as many games this season. UT’s 40 fi rst half points were its most in the fi rst 20 minutes this season.

GAME 4: MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE For the fi rst time in 30 years, the Tennessee Lady Vols traveled to Murfreesboro to face the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. Sophomore Glory Johnson led the Lady Vols to a 69-52 victory with a career high 21 points and 12 rebounds. It was the Knoxville native’s sixth career double double and her second career 20-plus point performance (she scored 20 points on Feb. 5 last season in a 73-43 win over Georgia). Tennessee grabbed a 2-0 lead on an Angie Bjorklund jumper. MTSU responded with a Chelsia Lymon three-pointer. Lady Vol rookie Taber Spani converted a layup at the 18:50 mark of the fi rst half and UT would not relinquish the lead the rest of the game. The Lady Vols used an 8-0 run to build a 30-20 lead with 3:58 and held the Blue Raiders to only two fi eld goals in the last 7:18 of the fi rst stanza as Tennessee fi nished the fi rst 20 minutes on a 13-4 run and went into the lockerroom with a 35-24 lead. Middle Tennessee got to within 10 of the Lady Vol lead, 41-31, with 15:50 remaining on a Lymon three-pointer. Tennessee responded with a three pointer of its own by Spani off an assist from Bjorklund. In addition to Johnson, Bjorklund and sophomore Shekinna Stricklen each tallied double fi gures. Bjorklund tossed in 16 points, while dishing out fi ve assists and grabbing three steals. Stricklen fi nished with 12 points, four assists and three rebounds. Helping clean up on the glass was redshirt sophomore Kelley Cain, who pulled down 11 rebounds and pitched in six points. The Murphy Center on the MTSU campus saw its fi rst ever sellout for a women’s game, drawing a standing room only crowd of 11,802, just fi ve spectators shy of the Murphy Center record of 11,807 for any game there.

GAME 5: UCLA The UCLA Bruins made the trek to Knoxville for the fi rst time since Nov. 16, 2006, but the Bruin coaching staff was very familiar with Thompson-Boling Arena and the Lady Vols. The Bruins are led by former Lady Vol and assistant coach Nikki Caldwell. She is assisted by former Lady Vol Tasha Butts and a former Lady Vol practice player, Tony Perotti. Unfortunately for the Bruins, the outcome was the same as it has been the previous six times UT Head Coach Pat Summitt faced off against a former player, the Lady Vols came away victorious, 61-47. The Bruins started off hot and led the entire fi rst half after shooting 42.9 percent in the fi rst stanza. The UCLA defense limited the Tennessee offense to just 9-of-31 shooting, 29 percent, in the fi rst half. Freshman Taber Spani scored eight of UT’s fi nal 11 points, including the last fi ve straight. The Lee’s Summit, Mo., native tied the game at 25 apiece on a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left before the halftime horn. A late Bruin fi eld goal gave UCLA a 27-25 lead at the break. UT held UCLA without a fi eld goal from the 4:56 mark of the fi rst half to just four seconds remaining, going on an 11-1 run to tie the game at 25. The Lady Vols would continue that run, extending it to 18-3 and a 32-27 lead nearly fi ve minutes into the second half. Spani fi nished with a team high 16 points for the second time this season and added six rebounds. Sophomore Glory Johnson tallied 11 points and seven rebounds while classmate Kelley Cain tied her season and career high with 11 boards and pitched in eight points. Sophomore Shekinna Stricklen continued to be a jack-of-all-trades, fi nishing with eight boards, six points and three assists. GAME 6: GEORGE WASHINGTON The Tennessee Lady Vols entered their Dec. 1 match-up with George Washington with only nine available players as redshirt sophomore Kelley Cain did not play after suffering a concussion against UCLA. The nine available made the most of their opportunity and all played at least 18 minutes en route to a 93-53 win over the Colonials. Sophomore Alyssia Brewer made the most of her season high 22 minutes as she tallied a career high 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting and grabbed a season best seven rebounds. The Lady Vols didn’t start the way Head Coach Pat Summitt would like, trailing 10-9 nearly fi ve minutes into the game. From that point, UT used an 11-2 run over 2:53 to build a 20-12 lead. Over the fi nal 6:54 of the fi rst half, the Lady Vols only surrendered a pair of GW free throws on their way to a 16-2 run and took a 54-24 lead into the break. At the half, sophomore Glory Johnson had notched her seventh career double double. The Knoxville native fi nished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Classmate Shekinna Stricklen recorded her fourth career double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Tennessee dominated the paint, outscoring GW 34-4 in the fi rst half and 54-12 in the paint for the game. The Lady Vols also owned the rebounding advantage, 49-40, for the sixth time in as many games this season. Junior Angie Bjorklund notched her 150th career three pointer and took sole possession of fourth place in the UT record books. Sophomore Alicia Manning fi nished with career highs of six assists and four steals, to go with fi ve points and fi ve rebounds in a season high 30 minutes of action. Bjorklund, junior Sydney Smallbone and freshman Taber Spani all fi nished with nine points, in addition to the three Lady Vols who tallied double fi gures.

GAME 7: #17/17 TEXAS The Tennessee Lady Vols and a crowd of 13,434 welcomed the #17/17 Texas Longhorns to Thompson-Boling Arena for an ESPN2 national TV match-up on Dec. 6. Four Lady Vols fi nished in double fi gures and Tennessee converted at a 52.5 percent clip for the night as the Lady Vols cruised to a 78-58 win over the Longhorns. Earning Lady Vol Player of the Game honors was sophomore Shekinna Stricklen, who tallied 14 points, six rebounds and a game-high fi ve assists in 28 minutes. Tennessee totaled a season high 23 helpers on 32 fi eld goals made against Texas. After falling behind 5-3 early on, the Lady Vols put together an 8-0 run to claim an 11-5 lead just fi ve minutes into the contest. Tennessee tore off runs of 12 straight, to take a 31-18 lead with 5:29 left in the fi rst half, and 14 straight, holding the Longhorns scoreless from the 3:12 mark of the fi rst half to the 16:29 point of the second half and doubling up Texas 48-24. Junior Angie Bjorklund scored a team high 15 points to go with four assists and three rebounds. Sophomore Glory Johnson pitched in 14 points, fi ve boards, two assists and a block. Redshirt sophomore Kelley Cain did not start the contest, but fi nished with 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting effort, six rebounds and four blocks in only 17 minutes of action. Sophomore Alyssia Brewer made her fi rst career start and fi nished with seven rebounds and four points in 18 minutes. Classmate Alicia Manning tallied eight points, four assists and three rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Despite giving up 22 offensive rebounds to the Longhorns, Tennessee won the battle of the boards, 42-41, for the seventh time in as many games this season. The Lady Vols now own a 19-12 record all-time against Texas and have won four of the last fi ve over the Longhorns.

GAME 8: RUTGERS The Tennessee Lady Vols traveled to New York City and the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, for the third time to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the second game of the Maggie Dixon Classic. On the strength of Shekinna Stricklen’s team high 19 points, the Lady Vols earned the “W”, 68-54, improving UT’s all-time record at MSG to 3-0, all three of which have come against Rutgers. Prior to facing the Lady Vols, Rutgers had been holding their opponents to only 54.7 points per game and 33.1 percent shooting. As in previous games this season, the Lady Vols were down early, 3-2, at the 17:36 mark of the fi rst half, but once UT got the lead, it did not surrender the advantage. After pulling ahead, 4-3, on a Kelley Cain layup, Tennessee would not trail the rest of the game. The Lady Vols used a 14-2 run from the 16:42 mark of the fi rst half to the 10:56 point to build a 21-7 lead. The Scarlet Knights continued to fi ght and play tough defense, and were able to pull within fi ve, 30-25, as the fi rst half came to a close. Rutgers got within one at 40-39 with 13:14 to play, but Tennessee put together an 8-0 run to the 8:44 mark, building a 48-39 lead. The Scarlet Knights were unable to recover and did not get within seven the rest of the contest. In addition to her 19 points, Stricklen tallied four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Glory Johnson, who only played four minutes in the fi rst half after picking up two fouls, fi nished with 10 points and seven rebounds. All of Johnson’s points and all but one of her boards came in the second stanza. Classmate Alyssia Brewer fi nished with 10 points and four rebounds in 16 minutes, while fellow post Kelley Cain tallied nine points, seven boards, six blocks and three assists. Junior Angie Bjorklund fi nished with eight points, fi ve rebounds and four assists in playing nearly all 40 minutes.
