That is three more than any other team in the conference, despite playing two less games than anyone other than South Carolina, which has just six. With his league-leading 10, senior Khayyan Norfork alone has more than four different SEC teams. uThe Vols had nine thefts alone on Feb. 27 vs. Canisius, led by three each from Matt Duffy and Andrew Toles. Khayyan Norfork also had two in that contest. uAfter recording four saves in all of 2010, the Vols already have surpassed that mark with five saves in nine games this year. They come from four different pitchers no less as well (Williams, Steckenrider, Dean and Godleyx2). uThrough the first nine home games, UT has had 12.832 fans enter the stadium for an average of 1,425 per contest. The 2,345 who witnessed the Big Orange blank Milwaukee on Feb. 18 represented the second-largest Opening Day crowd in school history behind only the 2,753 on hand on the first day of the 1995 campaign. uTennessee opens the 2011 season with 16 straight home games. The team he has started for has won all 12 contests, including all five of the games he started in 2010 for the Big Orange. uSenior Josh Liles is nearing a pair of milestones as he needs just two runs and three RBIs to reach 100 in both categories for his career. TODD RALEIGHFourth SeasonWestern Carolina, 1991Record at UT: 90-86 (.511)Career Record: 347-295 (.540)

Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is in his fourth season at Rocky Top after guiding his alma mater, Western Carolina, for eight seasons. While at UT, Raleigh has had 12 players drafted, including two in 2008 and five more in both 2009 and 2010, and two more sign free-agent contracts following the completion of their eligibility. Nine of those players were drafted in the top-20

rounds, highlighted by 2009 first-round selection Kentrail Davis. In 19 seasons as a collegiate coach, Raleigh has now produced a total of 45 MLB draft picks and 63 professional players.

Under Raleigh's guidance, the Vols have steadily moved up in the NCAA RPI in each of the last three sea-sons, improving from 91 in 2008 to 58 in 2009 and 45 in 2010. Over the past two seasons, Raleigh’s squads have belted out 168 round-trippers (87 in 2009, 81 in 2010), good for the second-most prolific two-year period in school history.

During his tenure in Cullowhee, Raleigh’s clubs won two regular-season Southern Conference champion-ships, one Southern Conference tournament title, turned in five top-three league finishes and made a pair of NCAA Regional appearances—reaching the Regional final both times.

His 2007 WCU team posted a winning record against teams in the top 35 of the RPI and earned a rare mid-major at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Catamounts were touted by ESPN’s Kyle Peterson as featuring an “SEC-style offense.”

In his 19 seasons as a collegiate assistant or head coach, Raleigh’s teams have finished third or better in their respective league 12 times (63 percent).

Raleigh and his wife, Stephanie, have four children: Caleb John “Cal” (13), Emma Grace (11), Carley Elizabeth (4) and Todd Anthony “T” (1).

Turn up The VOLume ““There is not another person that puts higher

expectations on myself and this program than I do,” UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh said. “There is no doubt in my mind that we have this program headed in the right direction, especially this season. Everyone is on the same page in terms of coming to work every single day with the mindset of getting better. In the long run, that is really the only thing we can control.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“Since I got here in the fall of 2007, we have improved every aspect of this program, from the facilities, to the Academic Progress Rate to the NCAA RPI. The last piece of the puzzle is putting it all together on the field and getting to the postseason. Has it happened as fast as we would have liked? Most certainly not. I understand the expectations of our fans, and this may sound odd, but I like the fact that some of them aren’t too happy right now. I love that they expect greatness, just like I do. Have there been some extenuating circumstances that have slowed us down a little? Sure, but our goal from day one has been to build a program, not a team. I have no doubt that that stuff is in the past and we are moving forward. We are going to be a national power, no question about that. I am confident that we are headed in the right direction and cannot wait to get this season started.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“Ash brings a lot of energy and great ideas to our staff, especially with his insight on base running. It is going to be a critical year in that area because of all of the bat changes and he has done a tremendous job revamping our efforts on that part of the game. We stole a lot of bases last year, but I think we are going to step it up another level this season and put a lot of pressure on opposing teams.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“We have been working on a lot of small ball stuff. We don't have as many power guys, so we have to get back to the basics. A lot of bunting, base running and just small ball stuff. It's not a traditional team like we have had in the past but we are getting use to it. Top to bottom, it's just a group of scrappy guys. We are going to score runs in many different ways and put pres-sure on the other team to make mistakes."

— Senior First Baseman Josh Liles

“Our attitude is one of high intensity. That is one thing that we have focused on in our practices and scrimmages this fall and leading up to the spring. The chemisty on this team is definitely improved over what it has been in the last couple of years. We have a close-knit group and a group of seniors to lead us. We've set the bar high from the very beginning. The SEC Tournament is a bare minimum."

A 2005 loss to Clemson which started at home, was halted, and then concluded on a different date on the road is not included in Raleigh’s home-away-neutral record.

u The Vols have steadily moved up in the NCAA RPI in each of the last three seasons, improving from 91 in 2008 to 58 in 2009 and 45 in 2010.

u Over the past two seasons, Raleigh’s squads have belted out 168 round-trippers (87 in 2009, 81 in 2010), good for the second-most prolific two-year period in school history.

u The Vols have been one of the best defensive teams in the nation the past two seasons, posting fielding percentages of .972 and .974 in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

u Raleigh led an offensive juggernaut in 2007 that ranked fifth nationally in runs per game (8.4), sixth nationally in home runs per game (1.4), scoring (8.4) and slugging percentage (.517), seventh in doubles per game (2.39) and 11th in batting avg. (.323).

u Under Raleigh’s guidance in 2009, Cody Hawn became just the 10th player in UT history to claim the team Triple Crown with a .364 batting average, 22 home runs and 81 RBIs.

NOTEWORTHYWINNING

Including his two seasons at North Carolina, Tennessee senior and Knoxville native Rob Catapano has started 12 collegiate games. The team he has started for has won all 12 contests, including all five of the games he started in 2010 for the Big Orange.

VOLS OFF AND RUNNING Prior to the season, there was quite a bit of talk about Tennessee implementing a new, more aggressive baserunning philosophy. The Vols have walked-the-walk so far in 2011 as they have already recorded an SEC leading 30 stolen bases in the first nine games of the season. By comparison, it took UT 21 games to reach that mark in 2010 and 35 contests to do so in 2009. The new baserunning program was on full dis-play on Feb. 27 against Canisius, when the Big Orange was a near-perfect 9-for-10 on the base-paths, including a pair of double steals and three thefts of third. The last time a Tennessee team had nine stolen bases in one game came against Morehead State on Feb. 8, 2003. UT has now been successful in 14 straight stolen base attempts and 26 of its last 27 tries. With a league-leading 10 thefts, senior Khayyan Norfork alone has more stolen bases than four different SEC teams (S. Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida).

SAVING THE DAY One of the most eye-popping stats for Tennessee this season has come from the back of the team's bullpen. After recording four saves over the course of the entire 2010 campaign, the Vols already have five saves in the first nine games this season, with four different pitchers doing the honors no less. Making the feat even more impressive is the fact that none of the saves have come from UT's closer, Matt Ramsey, who is yet to pitch in a game.

DUFFY PICKING UP RIGHT WHERE HE LEFT OFF After a slow start in 2010, his first at Tennessee, Matt Duffy picked up the pace at the end of the year, leading the Big Orange with a .348 batting average in SEC play. The transfer from Vermont has picked up right where he left off as he is currently hitting at a .433 clip (13-for-40) to lead the team nine games into 2011. A native of Milton, Mass., Duffy also paces the squad with four doubles (tied with Andrew Toles), 12 RBIs and a .667 slugging percentage.

THE TALENTED MR. NORFORK (FROM RIPLEY) UT senior second baseman Khayyan Norfork has gotten off to a quick start in 2011, hitting safely in

the first eight games of the season. He is second behind only Duffy with four multiple-hit contests. Through nine games, the Ripley, Tenn., native ranks second on the team with a .400 batting aver-age, eight RBIs and a .600 slugging percentage and tops the squad in on-base percentage (.561), walks (10) and stolen bases (10).

GRUVER SETTING THE TONE ON THE MOUND Junior starting pitcher Steven Gruver has done a fantastic job setting the tone for a UT pitching staff that looks much improved over recent years. In his first three starts alone, he has led the Vols to a pair of shutouts, striking out 24 and walking just five in 19.1 innings of work. He went six scoreless against Milwaukee on Opening Day before shutting down Canisius for seven frames on Feb. 26 when he posted a career-high 10 strikeouts. He has now pitched 6.0+ innings six times in his careers. In those six games, he is 4-0 with an 0.92 ERA and 41 strike-outs to just nine walks.

VOLS NOT LISTED IN NOTICE OF ALLEGATIONS The University of Tennessee received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA on Feb. 23. While an examination into potential rules violations by the University of Tennessee baseball program was refer-enced in the initial Letter of Inquiry from the NCAA, there were no alleged violations by the baseball program listed in this Notice.

FLASHING THE LEATHER The Volunteers were spectacular in the field defensively in the first two weekends of play, mak-ing just three errors, only one of which came from an everyday position player. UT returns three-fourths of their starting infield, which played a large role in helping the team finish 24th in the nation at .974 in 2010. The only addition, first baseman Josh Liles, should improve the overall athleticism of the infield as well.

WELCOME TO ROCKY TOP! A total of 12 new Volunteers have made their debut wearing the Orange and White over the last three weekends, including five position players and seven pitchers. Freshman Andrew Toles is UT's starting centerfielder, while juniors Chris Pierce and Davis Morgan have made appearances in right field and first base, respectively. Freshman Ethan Bennett started at catcher against Morehead State and junior Wes Walker made a pinch-hitting appearance that day as well. On the mound, redshirt freshman Jon Reed and junior Jerod Peper have both earned a pair of starting assignments, while junior Levi Dean, sopho-more Zack Godley and freshmen Carter Watson, Nick Williams and Dalton Saberhagen have worked out of the bullpen.

OPENING DAY SOUTHPAWS With Steven Gruver earning the Opening Day start for the Vols this season, it marked the third consecutive campaign that the Vols have trotted a southpaw out to the mound to open the year. SHUTOUT STREAK Prior to its 4-0 victory over Milwaukee on Opening Day (2/18), Tennessee's last shutout came on March 10, 2007, a span of three years, 11 months and eight days (209 games), when James Adkins and Ryne Simpson combined to blank Siena, 5-0, in Knoxville. It didn't take the Vols to pick up another shut-out as they accomplished the feat once again just a week later against Canisius (2/25), also by a 4-0 score.

RECORD-SETTING ATTENDANCE ON OPENING WEEKEND

Tennessee set a new school-record for total atten-dance in a home-opening series, drawing 6,111 fans (2,037/game) to the three-game set against Milwaukee, Feb. 18-20. The previous record was set in 1997 when the Vols drew 5,877 over three games against Eastern Kentucky. With 2,345 on hand on the first day of the 2011 season, UT had its second-highest attendance for a home-opening contest, behind only the 2.753 that saw the Vols take on Louisville on Feb. 25, 1995.

NORFORK EXCELS ON OPENING DAY...AGAIN For the second straight season, Vol second base-man Khayyan Norfork opened the year with a bang. After going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base in his UT debut against Xavier in 2010, Norfork kicked off the 2011 campaign with a 2-for-4 effort, knocking in three of the team's four runs against Milwaukee in its 4-0 victory. In his two Opening Day starts combined, Norfork is 6-for-9 (.667) with four RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

ROCKY TOP BLOODLINES Freshman centerfielder Andrew Toles was born to bleed orange. A fourth-round selection by the Florida Marlins last June, Toles decded to put his professional career on hold in order to attend the same school where his father and uncle both excelled on the gridiron. His father, Alvin, was a hard-hitting linebacker at Tennessee (1981-84) before being drafted in the first round of the 1985 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. His uncle, Johnnie Jones, also is the fourth-leading rusher in Tennessee history (82-84) and spent time with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL. His mother, Vicky, meanwhile, played basketball at the University of New Orleans, and his sister, Morgan plays basketball at Auburn.

SEASON COMPARISONS(through 9 games)

Page 52011 Tennessee Volunteer Baseball Game Notes

Starting this season, the NCAA has implemented a number of new rules, primarily a pitch clock and new bat standards.

PITCH CLOCK After allowing the use of a pitch and between innings clock experimentally last year, the commit-tee voted to mandate the use of a timing device and implemented penalties for non-compliance. Current rules require pitchers to start their deliv-ery in no more than 20 seconds without runners on base. This rule remains and an umpire will be required to monitor and enforce this time limit. Additionally, in non-televised games, umpires will enforce a 90 second limit between innings. The committee recommended a time limit for televised games of 108 seconds, which the Southeastern Conference used experimentally during the 2010 season.

BAT STANDARDS A new bat testing standard will be in place for NCAA baseball across all three Divisions. The goal is for non-wood bats that meet this new standard to

perform similarly to wood bats in competition. NCAA baseball has a vast variety of teams and styles of play and a central part of the bat stan-dards is to ensure a balance between offense and defense. Known as the Ball-Bat Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR), all bats used in NCAA competition for all divisions must meet this standard and display the appropriate certification mark. There is no opportu-nity for “grandfathering” old bats. The BBCOR formula provides a better mea-sure of a bat’s performance and allows the NCAA Baseball Rules Committee and bat-testing laborato-ries to better predict field performance based on lab tests. NCAA bat performance testing protocols are developed and managed by the Baseball Research Panel, which consists of a group of top scientists and researchers from NCAA institutions. The BBCOR standard, which was announced in September 2008, replaces the Ball Exit Speed Ratio standard. Full information on the BBCOR standard and other bat details is available at the following website: http://www.ncaa.org/baseballbats.

group of 14 newcomers, headlined by freshman Andrew Toles, a fourth-round pick by the Florida Marlins in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, and last year's Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year, Ethan Bennett from Farragut High School.

NEW FACES ON THE COACHING STAFF In addition to the 14 new players, Tennessee also welcomes a pair of new coaches in assistant coach Ash Lawson and volunteer assistant Barrett Shaft. A former head coach at Tennessee Wesleyan, Lawson comes to Rocky Top from the San Diego Padres for whom he was a regional crosschecker. He was named the Padres' Scout of the Year in 2006. Shaft is in his first season as a volunteer assistant after serving as a manager for the team last year. He is a 2008 graduate of Western Carolina.

HOMEGROWN TALENT PLENTIFUL ON TENNESSEE ROSTER Tennessee’s roster includes 12 players from the state of Tennessee (38.7 percent of the roster). Five Vols are from Knox County and one is from Sevier County (Seymour), while two others hail from West Tennessee and four are from Middle Tennessee. Four of the local players hail from Farragut High School, including senior Rob Catapano, junior Matt Ramsey and freshmen Ethan Bennett and Nick Williams. Bennett was named a 2010 Louisville Slugger High School All American, Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year and TBCA Class AAA Player of the Year after setting a state single-season record with 27 home runs. He also hit .420 with 73 RBIs and scored 57 runs and set the national record for home runs in consecutive games, belting 16 during a 10-game stretch in April. Williams also played a big role in leading Farragut to three straight state titles with Bennett, going 19-0 with 137 strikeouts and an 0.85 ERA dur-ing his three seasons on the varsity squad.

THE COLOR ORANGE On Sunday, Feb. 20, ESPN aired a feature-length documentary on former two-sport Tennessee star Condredge Holloway, entitled "The Color Orange." The documentary, produced and directed by country music star Kenny Chesney, detailed Holloway's collegiate career as the first black quar-terback in the SEC. In addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Holloway also served as the starting shortstop at UT, garnering first-team All-America recognition in 1975 after hitting .396 with 20 RBIs and two home runs.

BASEBALL PARTICIPATES IN LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK, RAISES MORE THAN $5,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH For the fourth straight year, the University of Tennessee baseball team participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk Thursday evening at Circle Park on the UT campus. Since becoming involved with the event in 2007, the Volunteers have now helped to raise nearly $30,000, including over $5,000 this year, in support of research into the treatment and preven-tion of cancer.
