InDecember2014,theAmericanHeartAssociation(AHA)statisticsreportedover326,000peoplediedofsuddencardiacarrest(SCA)in2013intheU.S.,morethanAlzheimers,assaultbyfirearms,breastcancer,prostatecancer,cervicalcancer,colorectalcancer,diabetes,HIV,housefires,motorvehicleaccidents,andsuicidescombined.SCAdoesnotgivewarningsymptomslikeatraditionalheartattack.Theheartgoesintoanunstablerhythmcalledventricularfibrillationandtheheartstopsbeatingeffectivelyandthepersonbecomesunconscious.Lessthan30%ofthetimesomeonewilldoCPRonavictim,whichdoeshelpbuytime.However,CPRalonecannotputtheheartbackinnormalrhythm,whichrequiresadefibrillator.ForeveryminuteanAEDisnotavailable,thechanceforsurvivaldrops7-10%eachminuteapersonisinSCA,lessthan10%ofSCAvictimssurvive.Only8.3%surviveneurologicallyintactbecauseEMSsimplycannotgettothevictimandshocktheminthefourtosixminutesbeforebraindamageoccurs.
