TEN REASONS COMPANIES WORK THROUGH THE STCU: CONTACTING THE STCU The Science and Technology Center in Ukraine is an intergovernmental, non-profit organization created with the goal of aiding unemployed or underemployed scientists previously working on the development of weapons of mass destruc- tion. The Center is financed by Canada, the European Union, Ukraine and the USA and conducts its work in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The STCU finances projects which convert the military know-how of the scientists of our recipient states into peace- ful civilian applications. In addition to ‘Regular Projects’ funded directly by the STCU, the Center also works in a number of other spheres, including: Partnership Projects, Matchmaking, Promotional Missions, Seminars and Workshops, Travel Grants and Patenting Support. Our team consists of top international professionals with expertise in project manage- ment, logistics, finance, and marketing, enabling the STCU to provide world class serv- ices to our partners and scientific institutions. OUR PROJECTS

REGULAR TECHNOLOGY PROJECTSThe original mechanism for aiding formerweapons scientists in recipient states, funding forRegular Projects is derived from the goverments ofCanada, the EU, Ukraine the USA, and Japan.These projects continue to be of significantimportance to the work of the STCU. Projectswhich have been financed cover practically everyscientific field, such as: agriculture, solar energy,environmental protection, water quality, health,and mediciine.

PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMThe STCU is meeting the challenges of an ever-changing and rapidly globalising world bybecoming more flexible and sustainable.Beginning in 1997, the STCU undertook a newendeavour in its goal of achieving greater sus-tainability by commencing the PartnershipProgram. The goal of the program is to createpartnerships between Uzbek and donor countrycompanies, scientists and institutes for the devel-opment and promotion of R&D projects.

The PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM has a number ofdifferent aspects which include:

MATCHMAKINGImportant to the success of the PartnershipProgram is the promotion of opportunities toprospective partners through matchmaking visitsto the STCU by interested businessmen, and out-reach missions to Western countries to meet face-to-face with potential investors.

PROMOTIONAL MISSIONSThe main aim of this initiative is to increaseawareness of the STCU's work and activities inEurope and to find new partners in EU countries.

PATENT SUPPORT PROGRAMCreated with the goal of assisting STCU scientistsin patenting their research both domestically andabroad, this program has enabled 104 inventionsto receive patents since its implementation in1998.

SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPSTo facilitate the transfer of new technologies andbetter meet the expanding needs of scientists, theSTCU has been expanding its role in conductingseminars and workshops in recipient countries.Seminars have addressed topics such asIntellectual Property Rights, marketing, commer-cialisation of technologies, and business develop-ment. In 2002, the STCU initiated its WorkshopProgram in order to facilitate both networkingbetween scientists from Uzbekistan and theirWestern counterparts and the exchange of infor-mation between these parties.

TRAVEL GRANTS PROGRAMThe goal of this program is to secure contacts andincrease integration between scientists and com-panies in recipient states and their counterparts inthe STCU donor countries by financing the travelof STCU scientists.
