Mrs Wilson with our P1 pupils.

The new academic year began in full swing with our Mayflower community welcoming our new Primary 1 pupils and parents to our school. To help facilitate the transition into primary school for these youngest members of our MFPS family, our large team of teachers, allied educators, school counsellors, executive and administrative staff, Parent Support Group members, school prefects as well as upper primary buddies came together in full force to render our fullest support. Arrival times and timetables were adjusted to accommodate the special arrangement for the first weeks of school. It was very heartening to see our community exemplifying our school motto, Service Before Self. We thank you!

We have had a very successful 2013, in which we saw our pupils, staff and school as an organisation garner myriad accolades. Never resting on our laurels, we ended the year reviewing our achievements and progress so that we may consolidate and build on our strengths as well as continue to look into our areas for improvement as our journey of excellence continues into 2014 and beyond.

Our school vision, Our Pupils, Exemplary Citizens of Tomorrow, encapsulates the holistic education in MFPS that prepares our pupils for tomorrow, today. We seek to nurture our pupils to be of sound character and imbibed with the right values; be engaged learners who are future-ready, to love Singapore and lead and serve the community; be physically active, living healthy lifestyles; and grow to appreciate the arts, developing positive artistic dispositions such as resilience and commitment to excellence through the process.

At the 2013 MOE Workplan Seminar, our Minister of Education, Mr. Heng Swee Keat sketched our collective aspiration to enable our pupils to acquire a broad and deep foundation for their lifelong journey through a student-centric, values-driven education that is characterised by breadth, depth and length.

The “Breadth” dimension of education values every child, developing their different talents to the fullest through holistic education in schools that allows them to make connections across different domains of knowledge and make meaning of their world. In MFPS, our strategic thrust of Holistic Learning, Our Quest ensures every child is holistically nurtured in the cognitive, aesthetics, physical, social, moral and leadership domains. Our Learning by Doing approach gives our learners multiple authentic opportunities to construct and make meaning of their learning through experience and reflection. The MFPS Talent Development Framework gives pupils with talents and interests across the different domains of the cognitive, aesthetics, physical, and leadership opportunities to further

enhance their exploration and deepen their learning experiences. Leveraging on the school’s strengths in the arts, we have begun making inroads into integrating learning through the arts. We are proud that our Teaching Through the Arts Project (TTAP) and Place-Based Learning have been selected by the Ministry of Education to be showcased at the 2014 MOE ExCEL Fest.

“Depth” is about instilling in each child strong core values and character, and nurturing in each a strong commitment to Singapore and fellow Singaporeans. Our Strategic Thrust of Character, Our Core directs our whole-school effort to deliver effective and impactful Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). Every teacher is a CCE teacher. Through the MFPS ExCITE approach that promotes CCE through Exposure via explicit teaching and Celebrating pupils’ success through providing platforms for Internalising, Transforming and Exemplifying, values are both taught and caught. “Depth” is also about ensuring that very child develops a strong foundation of literacy, numeracy and 21st century competencies. Additional literacy support programmes available to targeted pupils in 2014 include the new lower primary STELLAR Supplementary Programme and the P3 School Dyslexia Remediation programme. Through our Making Thinking Visible approach, we aim to develop the key 21st Century Competencies of critical and inventive thinking and communication skills.

Finally, “Length” is about lifelong learning and also learning for life. Our goal is for every pupil to be Engaged Learners, Future Ready. We build learner engagement at three levels. Affective Engagement promotes our pupils’

enjoyment of and joy in learning within a positive and safe learning environment. In behavioural engagement, our pupils are active participants of the learning process. In cognitive engagement, we want our pupils to show commitment and willingness to put time, mental effort and persistence to master complex concepts while building intellectual resilience and flexibility to consider multiple strategies and solutions.

Our thrust of Staff, Our Key acknowledges the central role our MFPS team of staff play in realising quality education that maximises our pupils’ potential. Putting the child at the centre of all that we do, we seek to live out our school mission of Touching Hearts, Engaging Minds, Nurturing Talents, anchored on our belief in building quality relationships with pupils and their parents. Aligned to our belief in lifelong learning, we pursue professional excellence through continuous learning, collaborative discourse and personal reflection. Our school has also forged strategic partnerships with key external organisations that have expanded our capacity to offer rich learning opportunities for our pupils.

As key stakeholders, we want to continue to build strong home-school partnerships with parents, our key stakeholders, so that our pupils’ learning is well-supported at home and in school. We also look forward to more parents stepping forward to serve in our Parent Support Group or as Parent Volunteers so that together, we can enable our pupils to achieve our school vision of Our Pupils, Exemplary Citizens of Tomorrow.

Mrs Valarie Wilson

Primary 1 Learning Journey to Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden

Art Club Learning Journey to Singapore Tyler Print Institute

We had a wonderful time at the maze. The tree house was high. The suspension bridge was wobbly. We enjoyed the trip very much and would like to go there again.

Lee Sun Jae (1C)

We went to the bridge. It was wobbly. We also went to the potting garden. We saw lemon grass, mushrooms and many other types of plants. We had fun at Jacob Ballas. Wong Kylin (1H)

I enjoyed the maze and playing in the tree house. While sliding down the slides at the tree house, I felt like I was on a roller coaster. I spotted some caterpillars on the plants! I had a wonderful time at the garden.

Joey Yeo (1B)

Let’s learn more about plants.

Artwork on Picasso’s ‘The Bull’ by Russel Ong 3A.Sketches of Picasso’s ‘The Bull’.

On 27 August 2013, the Primary 1 pupils went on an experiential learning journey to Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. They learnt to identify shapes and the importance of conserving our natural heritage. They reflected on their joyous experiences at the garden in their learning journey booklets.

In line with MOE’s Teach Less, Learn More framework, the school brought 22 budding MFPS artists on an art learning journey to the Singapore Tyler Print Institute on 23 August 2013. The pupils learnt about Picasso’s creative process of printmaking. They sketched some of Picasso’s masterpieces like “The Bull” and “Woman with a Hat”. It was a fun and enriching learning experience for all the pupils.

I was very fascinated by Picasso’s artwork “The Bull”, which consists of a series of eleven lithographs ranging from a realistic image of a bull to an abstract one. I sketched my favourite picture of Picasso’s bull and even created an artwork of it. I am truly inspired by Picasso and look forward to learning more about his art.

Ong Yao Ting, Russel (3A)

The artworks on display were very interesting and an eye-opener to me as I was not familiar with this genre of art. I was particularly i n terested in Picasso’s art work “The Bull”. It showed me how common objects could be transformed from a realistic to abstract representation by looking at them from different a ngles and identifying them as geometric shapes, such as squares, rectangles, circles, triangles and cones.

Nur Qistina Bte Abdul Latiff (4C)

I was really amazed at how Picasso could depict such a realistic representation of a bull and gradually transform it step by step into an abstract image consisting of only simple shapes and lines. I learnt that such art is called Cubism. From the “Woman with a Hat”, I observed and realised that Picasso added minute details and abstracted them to make his art interesting and unusual.

Uniformed Groups’ Overseas Learning Trip to Surabaya, Indonesia

The uniformed groups (UG) comprising Scouts, Boys’ Brigade, Girls’ Brigade and some Netball girls went to Surabaya, Indonesia on an overseas learning trip during the September holidays. The objective of this trip was to help underprivileged children which is in line with MFPS motto of ‘Service Before Self’. The pupils donated stationery, sports equipment, teaching materials and food to the Indonesian children. They also helped to paint a mural for the school. In addition, the pupils went trekking to Mount Bromo, an active and most famous volcano in Java. Though the experience was challenging, the pupils persevered and showed resilience till they reached the summit. It was an awesome achievement for all.

I learnt the value of resilience from the children in the village school. Even though they could not understand us, they did not give up learning the alphabets. Their actions exemplified the value of resilience. Definitely a valuable lesson for all of us on resilience!

Sriram Ganapathy (5A)

We had a lot of fun organising a sports carnival for the pupils in the school. We taught them how to play different types of games. It made my day when I saw the smiles on their faces. It’s something that would be etched in my memory for a long time.

Interacting with the elderly. Learning about the pond ecosystem.

From this trip, I have learnt to appreciate Singapore more. After visiting the school, I learnt to compare Mathematics methods to find out which is better. I also learnt about the solar system. From the Values-in-Action activity, I learnt to gather up my courage to talk to the elders there. I had a lot of fun talking to them.

Lim Wan Hsin (5A)

I enjoyed learning at the Hong Kong Science Museum, especially the exhibition on dinosaurs. It makes me wonder more about them and how scientists are still discovering new things about them. During the school immersion programme, I learnt that our peers in St Stephen’s College Preparatory School used three languages to communicate with each other. I learnt a lot during the Science lesson on the planet system. The class was very focused and participated in the discussions. I will apply the lessons learnt in future. Tan Wilbyn (5A)

The classroom was very creative and filled with artworks and drawings. I like it very much as it feels like my normal Primary 4A classroom. I practised the core value “Willingness to Lead and Serve” when I helped some of the pupils in the class understand the things they did not understand well. Sam Nicole Elizabeth (4A)

30 Primary 4 and Primary 5 High Progress pupils participated in the 3rd Mathematics and Science Immersion Programme to Hong Kong from 15 to 20 November 2013. The pupils had an enriching experience at St Stephen’s College Preparatory School where they learnt more about the solar system, water cycle, fractions through drama strategies and solving problem sums. The hosting school showcased excel lent choir and orchestra performances which pupils enjoyed tremendously. Besides going on a learning journey to the Hong Kong Wetland Park and Science Museum, the pupils visited the Siu Sai Wan Jockey Club Helping Hand Home for the elderly where they sang I Have a Dream and played some ice-breaking games with the elderly.

P4 School CampThe Primary 4 pupils had their annual school camp from 18 to 20 September 2013. This year, the pupils got to experience challenging courses, high rope elements and outdoor cooking at Labrador Adventure Centre. They also learnt about life in the ocean at Underwater World Sentosa. The pupils spent a night there with the creatures of the Underwater World. It was indeed a thrilling experience!

The camp was super fun because it gave me a chance to try out the high elements. It also gave me a chance to get to know my friends better and to learn what teamwork really meant.

Gwen Pascual (4E)

This camp has helped us conquer our fear of heights and we learnt to be independent too.

Yeoh Lin Feng (4E)

I loved it! It was my first experience sleeping without my parents! What’s more unbelievable is that we actually got to sleep at Underwater World! I enjoyed the whole camp!

Sports Carnival

MFPS held its annual Sports Carnival for its P4 to P6 pupils on 31 August 2013 with the aim of broadening the sporting experience of its pupils. Pupils learnt and experienced playing Ultimate Frisbee, Handball and Speed Stacking besides the perennial favourites, Soccer and Netball.

The Sports Carnival enabled us to try out new sports like Speed Stacking! I found this very c h a l l e n g i n g ! I t wa s i n d e e d a f u n a n d e n joyable day!

Tun Nay Yaung Khant (6C)

I was very excited when our teacher told us that there was going to be a Sports Carnival. There were many types of games on that day like handball, frisbee, Speed Stacking, netball and soccer. I had as much fun at this year’s carnival as I did at last year’s. It was a memorable day for me!

Yukesh Owen (6C)

The Sports Carnival this year was fun! There were lots of activities like soccer, netball and Speed Stacking. Though netball was fun, it was tiring! It requires a lot of energy and teamwork. I enjoyed myself and it was a good day!

Nursufiani (6D)

6Events@TENI Have A Dream School Play

MFPS presented an original play entitled I Have A Dream on 5 July 2013 to a full house of 710 guests. The play was written by Ms Nurhuda Bte Housman, Subject Head, Information & Data Management and directed by Mr Wayne Leong, P4 Year Head. The event was graced by the Guest-of-Honour, Mr Yeo Whee Jim, Director (Arts & Heritage), Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY).

The months of hard work paid off as the performance, which featured acting, singing and dancing, won resounding applause and generous commendations from guests. It was especially heartwarming to witness the collective expression of talents of staff and pupils, both on-stage and behind the scenes.

Conceived as a Children for Children event, proceeds from the evening went towards the Children’s Cancer Foundation, thereby reinforcing in the pupils the importance of using one’s talents to serve the community. Besides being a celebration of pupils’ learning in and through the Arts, the play is an important outward expression of quality holistic Arts Education in MFPS. The process of preparation was as important as the final performance as it provided rich and authentic learning opportunities for pupils to develop important Social Emotional competencies, such as self-management, self-awareness and relationship management, as well as key 21st century skills such as critical thinking and communication skills.

Gardens by the Bay Performance

As part of MFPS contributions to dance education in the cluster schools, the school held the 3rd

dAnCE Steps Dance Camp on 9 and 10 September. With the theme In my Dancing Shoes, the camp focused on the provision of creative platforms for pupils in the Chinese, Indian and Malay dance groups. 82 pupils from 5 different schools came together to create the dance steps and to quote the keynote speaker, Mr Janek Schergen, Artistic Director of the Singapore Dance Theatre, “make friends in dance”. The two-day camp ended in a climax as the pupils performed their co-choreographed dance items on the afternoon of the second day.

On 24 August 2013, MFPS Performing Arts groups performed at Gardens by the Bay. As part of the Garden’s inaugural Garden Series - Schools Celebrating National Day Month, the performances were well received by over 1000 local and international audiences.

8Events@TENTIMEOUT : Think Contemporary Exhibition (at the Singapore Art Museum)As a follow-up to the Benchmarking Exercise with Haig Girls’ School in 2012, MFPS adapted the school’s Interdisciplinary Place-Based Learning programme as a pilot study. The project seeks to facilitate inter-disciplinary learning within authentic learning spaces. In interacting with Art works by local artists displayed at the Singapore Art Museum through the disciplinary lens of English, Social Studies and Art, the pupils engaged with issues of Identity and Heritage. They responded through artistic and written mediums, thus honing their 21st century skills of critical and inventive thinking. As a celebration of the work done over the year, the pupils’ artefacts of learning were staged at the Singapore Art Museum from 3 to 10 October 2013 together with those from Haig Girls’ School and Geylang Methodist School (Primary).

Fun(D) Fair - A Fund Raising Project for Children’s Cancer Foundation A Values-in-Action project was planned by Primary 6 pupils with the aim of raising awareness of childhood cancer and spreading the spirit of giving in the school community. The Parents’ Support Group together with Primary 6 pupils and Alumni set up various stalls in the school. Pupils applied the knowledge and skills learnt in the Financial Literacy Workshop. The event raised a total of $7230.50.

We had to consider our ideas of setting up the stalls carefully, thinking of safety, financial matters and the feasibility of our ideas. My class managed to raise $777.50 for the Children’s Cancer Foundation, contributing to society through a fun way. It was hard but meaningful work.

Thel Su Thazin (6A)

We are a small class but we tried our best to come up with ideas for our stall. Our goal was to raise $200, but we raised more than what we targeted. We were very happy.

Gayathri (6F)

I came very early with my friends to set up our stalls. We manned the stalls the whole morning while having fun at the same time. We raised quite a lot of money and I enjoyed myself doing this fund-raising project.
