Pastor’s Pen: The best Valentine ever…

There are lots of stories that surround the origin of Valentine’s Day. One story states that a Christian, named Valentine, was imprisoned for his belief in Jesus and for insulting Roman gods. The story goes that, while in prison, he ministered to the jailor’s daughter. She was blind, and the Christian, Valentine, prayed for her to be healed. She was healed. The jailor and his family confessed Jesus and eventually were baptized and joined the movement. Unfortunately that act didn’t commute Valentine’s sentence, so on the day of his execu-tion, supposedly Feb. 14th, he was beheaded. The legend states earli-er that morning, Valentine wrote the girl a letter of encouragement and signed it; “Your Valentine”. Valentine’s Day is a day we share Valentine’s cards. Do you remember, as a kid in elementary school, we had a Valentine’s card for everyone in our class? (usually accompanied by those nasty little candy hearts that said, “be my Valentine” or “I’m yours” or some other kitschy statement that we would dwell on and worry about… because we had to have the right girl (or boy) get the right card and piece of candy.) I suspect that many a heart went pitter-patter when the right person received the right card from that secret admirer. (Who wasn’t usually all that secret about it.) For many of us, it began us thinking about LOVE for the first time. Now that I’m an adult, it seems the bar has been raised a bit. Those nasty little hearts have given way to some pretty yummy chocolates. Those cards (I recommend Hallmark) can make or break your “eventful night”. Our culture is bombarding us with messages about the proper or best way to show your love to your spouse. Think about some of the advertising that you have experienced. Jared Jewelers ran a campaign stating that husbands cared sooo much for their wives that they went to Jared’s! (Jared’s campaign; “He went to Jared’s.”) I wonder how much of our thoughts and perceptions of love have been influenced by advertising. Let’s turn it around a bit. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Game Night

Has Returned The Member

Care Team is

once again sponsoring game night at Tem-

ple. Please mark your calendar for the fol-

lowing Saturdays from 4pm to 7pm: Feb-

ruary 24 and March 24 in Fellowship Hall.

Bring your favorite game and a light snack

or finger food to share.

The Mission Team will again be encouraging everyone to collect “30 pieces of silver” during the Lenten season. This contributes to our Benevolence fund. More information to come.

New Sermon Notes If you are like most of us, there have been times during a sermon that you have wished you could “write it down”. It may be a quote from the Pastor, a Bible verse, a series of points from the sermon, or just something that moved you and you don’t want to forget it. The Worship Team continues to look for ways to enhance the worship experience, and providing a means of “writing it down” seemed to be one way of helping many to retain those feel-ings of meaningful worship. We now have “Sermon Notes” pamphlets avail-able in each pew for you to use as a means of participating in and retaining the worship experience. Please use those pamphlets as you wish and take them home to help you as you go through the weeks ahead. The Worship Team

Extra! Extra! Read all about us here at Temple Pre-School.

It’s hard to believe February is here already. All the boys

and girls have worked very hard and they are all doing a fantastic

job. Each month the Temple teachers follow a curriculum that

is appropriate for the age group of the children in their respec-

tive classes. We also make sure fun is part of each and every

day. The boys and girls experience Bible stories, music, games

and, of course, lots of fun. Our older classes get to enjoy field trips throughout the school year. The 2 and 3 year

olds are just a little young for this so they’ll be staying behind until next year. The Pre-K classes

visited the Allen Memorial Planetarium at South High School during January. Soon love will be

in the air with Valentine’s parties scheduled for February. Lots more fun, games, goodies and

songs!

Be sure to tell someone you love them this month and stop in and see us anytime!

ADDITIONS TO THE LIBRARY

Adult THE BAIT OF SATAN—- John Bevere exposes one of the most deceptive snares

Satan uses to get believers out of the will of God; being offended. It is an unfortunate fact that many are offended and held captive. This book shows you how

to identify the traps and escape the victim mentality.

THE MYSTERY OF GOD’S WILL— Probably the most misunderstood single factor of discovering

God’s will is the thought that, “If I do this, the struggles will end, the questions are over, the answers come, and I live happily ever after. “ But that’s not reality. The quest to understand God’s

will is a journey.

I LOVE YOU UNCONDITIONALLY… ON ONE CONDITION— Everyone wants to be loved

unconditionally in marriage. But all too often, the conditions we create and the unrealistic

expectations we place on our spouses rapidly cause that dream to fade. Packed with hilarious anecdotes and thoughtful insights, Joey O’Connor offers fresh insights into the marvelous, messy,

and often mundane moments of marriage.

QUESTIONS OF LIFE— Nicky Gumbel answers some of the key questions at the heart of Christian

faith. What is the purpose of life? What happens when we die? Why did Jesus have to die? What

relevance does the Bible have for us today?

CARING FOR GOD’S EARTH— This book engages participants in a lively application of United

Methodist teaching related to: Corporate and family farmers; Environmental hazards; Stewardship of

non-renewable resources; Human impact on animal life; Exploration in space; Understanding the

parameters of faith and science; and Safety and Nutrition in our food supply.

News from the United Methodist Men of Temple

Lenten Breakfast Series for Vigo County United Methodist Men

Breakfast starts at 8:00am, but come earlier for coffee!

We will need volunteers to prepare, cook and clean up after the breakfast meeting on the

17th. Our speaker will be a representative from Lighthouse mission. We have been cooking

breakfasts there on Friday mornings for residents and others that might be hungry. Men,

women, children and families are served by Lighthouse mission. It will be interesting to find

out more about how the mission works and who they serve. On Sunday, the 11th of February, the Preschool will be singing and the Men of Temple will be

helping to provide a meal after the service. Plans are now for a Taco bar. We’ll have some

ground beef, shredded chicken, cheese, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes and probably some

macaroni and cheese.

At our organizational meeting on January 14th, we discussed how the men might be more

involved in our church and community. We have an opportunity to make some connections with other groups through the Backyard

BBQs on the second Fridays of the month. We hope to be able to provide some assistance

to the Boy Scouts that meet here with some projects on Friday evening, May 11th, and then invite them to stay for the BBQ that night. We are still coordinating on exactly what project

– but we think we have enough interested men to plan this. We also want to promote fellowship by planning a spaghetti dinner sometime in March.

(Date to be decided upon.) Several other needs were voiced at our meeting and I am listing them here to encourage dis-

cussion: We feel there is a need to provide a shelter/car port/ roof for the church van. The van will

not fit into the garage. Providing some shelter from snow and freezing rain as well as the

parching sun might help maintain the van. Are there plans to build something like this? How

can the men help? We have also been wondering how the needs of members that can’t make it to service might

be helped. What part of our service is made available through the website or other media

support?

We also discussed how the Men might help observe Mother’s Day. We would like to do

something to honor the women of the church.

Faithful Veterans Guide Detachment (FVGDET) Update The Veteran's Detachment has conducted our first expedi-tion of the hog hunting season. In attendance were Detach-ment guides, Bob Doll and Elias Donker, and two veterans of the Afghan and Iraq wars named John and Aaron. The expedition was blessed with extreme hardship from the out-

set as we blew the transmission in the jeep around Cairo, Illinois. Nothing has the effi-cient potential to bond people like shared hardship! God certainly honored our starting prayer to send his Holy Spirit and grace among us, so from the vehicle problems through the horrible unusual cold in Texas we were blessed with the fruits of the spirit of being patient and serving one another. It was a testimony in itself that we were in our better spirits rather than falling to our base carnal attitudes. We were able to limp the vehicle into Sikeston, MO and make it to an auto parts store. We met some Missiourians with great attitudes and were able to share some fellowship as we conducted emergency re-pairs with their assistance. We then conservatively drove the vehicle back across Illinois to the farm and parked it. John decided that he wanted to continue the hunt in his per-sonal vehicle, so we quickly transferred all the equipment and trailer, and set out again. We made it to our camp in Texas twelve hours delayed, just after a day of rain which we were thankful to miss! The unseasonably cold weather made hunting difficult but we still harvested a few animals with help from one of our Texan friends. His name is Boyd, he is a 70 year old cowboy in the truest sense of the word who teaches Sunday school at a baptist church and hunts hogs with hounds from horseback. We had much- treasured fel-lowship sharing testimony and discussing the importance of witnessing what we know, what we believe, and how to find ecumenical common ground for furthering the work and unity of the kingdom of God in the name of a risen Jesus Christ. We are making tentative plans for a special Easter celebration with Boyd's church on our next expedition. What a privilege for us to share in being disciples of Christ with people from across the broad na-tion! The expedition was personally valuable to John, who has the following comments; "It was great to go through hardships and collectively come together to complete the mis-sion. It showed me as long as I keep my head up and my mind clear of distractions, my body will follow. You can't expect to succeed if you allow the pain to control you. I did more in that weekend than I have done in a long time and it has really opened my eyes to what I am capable of." Exactly,John, well said. We all agreed that if you're still here on this sphere, God hasn't given up on you, so you shouldn't give up on you either! Our Father still expects us to seek Christ, commune with the Holy Spirit and seek it's presence, and be of loving service to our neighbor. This makes the jeep breakdown seem appropriately insignificant. Material things, like vehi-cles, come and go and require replacement, but providing an opportunity to reflect the depth and faithfulness of their Creator's love to even one person is priceless. We look forward to our next opportunity to serve, which will be another iteration of the Women's Empowerment Seminar by request at United Methodist Temple, February 24th, at 10am. It is as always FREE OF CHARGE and any women from Temple are encouraged to join us!

This page is geared toward bringing more kids and families into our church. In order to make this happen and be successful, we ALL have to be willing to

work together. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO TO MAKE US A VITAL AND GROWING CHURCH???

KIDSHOPE USA School has begun for 2018, however we have been hindered by a couple of weeks of 2-hour delays. That makes it a problem for some mentors who meet with their child first thing in the morning. But the weather got better and we are now on regular schedules with our mentees

IT’S NOT TOO LATE!! If you would like to become a mentor, please contact Jill. You can begin at any time!

Pray about it and let me know – Miss Jill KIDZOWN NEWS Our KidZOwn group is growing! We have a list of about 30 children now who attend on a fairly regular basis. If you would like to help out, let me know! - JILL

UPCOMING DISCIPLESHIP EVENTS:

FRIDAY NIGHT AFTER LIGHTS

Our kids, elementary and up, are invited to come and hang out on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Food will be provided, as well as games and fun!! Bring a friend or two (or more) and come hang out! While the kids are having fun in the Fellowship Hall, you can come and join in the fun in the kitchen! Sign up to come and do meal prep. The idea is to bring a healthy recipe, maybe one that does not call for a lot of prep or ingredients. Bring ingredients for 20 servings and then portion it out either by 1 serving, 2 servings, 3 servings, 4 servings, whatever works for you and the recipe. You will want to bring your own containers to take home the meals. Leave with multiple dinners for the week. All Adults are Welcomed to Meal Prep.

We serve an awesome and faithful God. I know

this because He continues to hear our prayers. I believe the reason I do not need back surgery

is because so many prayers were spoken on my

behalf. And just to share with you... I have start-

loss of my sister in law. Thank you all and may God

We could say that God loved you so much “he went to” not Jared’s, but to Jesus… God chose Jesus to be the delivery mechanism for God’s love in the world. Remember the Hallmark campaign from years back? “When you care enough to send the very best”…. God sent his perfect son to take away the sins of the world. Jesus was the perfect lamb, the perfect sacrifice. What a “Hallmark moment” for us. Amen? The DeBeers diamond company used a slogan; “A diamond is forever”. We can easily flip that and say God’s grace is forever. Isn’t it wonderful to know that God is perfect? God is consistent. God is just. God loves you! He is crazy about you. It was once said that if God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. Using a more Old Testament vernacular… God would have your name written on his palm. (Isaiah 49.16) Deuteronomy 31.6 & Hebrews 13.5 states that “God will never leave you or forsake you.” I have had some pretty wonderful Valentine’s Day cards given to me through the years… some as a giddy child and many as a love struck adult; in love with God and in love with my Marlene. Aren’t we all recipients of the greatest gift of love that has ever been presented? I believe we are the beneficiaries of that greatest love Jesus, his love and sacrifice, were the best offering of love… ever. Maybe as we get caught up in the Valentine activities, we can reflect back on the love poured out on us and this world. Thanks be to God! Thank you, Jesus, and thanks be to the Holy Spirit. One question; If we have received so much love, shouldn’t we make sure and share that love with the world around us? I think we should… thanks for sharing your love with us. On Feb. 2nd ,four years ago, we had our first Sunday wor-ship at United Methodist Temple. As I typed this suddenly I could hear Bob Hope sing-ing “Thanks for the memories”. We are thankful to you, UM Temple folks. Will you be our Valentine? In Christian love, Pastor Kevin & Marlene
