here is a small city in Hillsborough county called

Temple Terrace. Even though it is not a huge city, there is a lot going on with huge hearts giving to their community and to their neighbors. Just look inside to see how the Chamber, Rotary, Women's Clubs, Friendship Club, Garden Club, Fire Department, Preservation Society and so many more people, are all doing their part to helping others. Not just during the holidays, but year round. And though it is not in Temple Terrace, this next mentioned article effects us all. Read the article on page 7 about Stars for Troops. Make a difference to those who protect our neighborhood, city, country. For the little Temple Terrace residents we have the coloring contest. Inside is a full page that children can color (best to use markers) and mail in. We will pick one winner who will win a $25 gift card to Toys R Us on December 20th. In January, we will

display some of the runners up as well. Thank you to all who support Temple Terrace and who support Temple Terrace News. We are all about you! The happiest of holidays to all and Merry Christmas! Cindi MatterPublisher

From all walks of life and ranging in ages from their low teens to mid 80’s, 112 women from 11 counties in Florida were great ambassadors for the Tampa Bay area as they took the stage at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas at the

Sweet Adelines International chorus competition October 18-22 before a crowd of approximately 8,000 people. The Chorus placed 5th overall out of 34 participating choruses from around the world. This is the 10th opportunity the chorus has had to represent the Southeast Region of the United States at this international event, having previously won the 1st place Gold Medal award in 1993. The chorus is motivated by their enthusiastic director, Tony DeRosa, a three-time quartet gold medalist from Winter Garden. His naturally brilliant and comedic showmanship and stage presence bring great synergy to the group’s overall entertainment package. A competitive chorus requires much commitment to personal learning of music

along with additional sectional rehearsals, choreography practices, weekend coaching sessions and retreats. But the hard work and dedication have tremendous rewards, both individually and corporately with the development

of increased musical skills and self confidence along with a significant emotional experience which is communicated to the audience. The Toast of Tampa shared their award-winning package at their 25th annual “Standing Room Only” show on November 12th at Louise Lykes Ferguson Hall at the David A. Straz Jr. Performing Arts Center in Tampa. The Chorus is always looking for additional members. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7-10 PM at the Tampa Women’s Club, 2901 Bayshore Blvd, Tampa , FL and are open to the public. Car pools are available!!

A special Dedication Ceremony is coming up in December celebrating the construction of a

new “ Main Street ” and public park in the redevelopment area.

This special event will be Dec. 1, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the center of the redevelopment site, located on the southeast corner of Bullard Parkway and 56th Street in Temple Terrace .

Everyone in the community is invited to attend this momentous occasion, which marks a significant milestone in the progress of the City’s redevelopment project. Many of the antiquated storefronts were razed or refurbished during the summer, along with parking, infrastructure improvements and other work.

That paved the way for a new

Main Street through the heart of the project, and a new park destined to become a popular gathering spot. As the project

moves forward, plans call for a mixed development of retail, residential, restaurant and civic

uses, including a 16,000-sq.-ft. Center for the Arts.

The Dedication Ceremony will feature remarks by Temple Terrace Mayor Joe Affronti, former mayor Fran Barford, and City Manager Kim Leinbach.

Michael Vlass, president of Vlass Temple Terrace, LLC, the City’s master developer, will talk about the project’s progress and timeline. Temple Terrace City Council members, along with other dignitaries and special guests also will attend.

There will be music, refreshments and lots of fun, so don’t miss this chance to show your support for Temple Terrace’s new downtown.

Stars from Tattered or Torn American Flags Can Still Serve –

Honor Veterans through the Stars for Troops Program –

HPH Hospice and Marine Corps League Auxiliary Unit #137

U.S. law requires that American flags be destroyed and replaced when they are not a fitting emblem for display. Does the American flag at your home need to be replaced? HPH Hospice team offices will accept worn American flags from the public throughout the year. The flags will be delivered to the Marine Corps League Auxiliary Unit #137, Spring Hill , FL. Auxiliary members remove the stars for their Stars for Troops program. The remaining material and scraps are folded in a military fold and properly disposed of through a prayer and burning ceremony. The Marine Corps League Auxiliary Unit #137 started the Stars for Troops program in 2009 in conjunction with Gifts from Home and Lea’s Prayers & Postage as a way to send a token of respect and remembrance to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan . HPH Hospice introduced a new component to its We Honor Veterans pinning ceremonies. In addition to a certificate and a pin, each veteran patient receives a star from a worn American flag with a message that reads “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in Florida . I can no longer fly. The sun and wind have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.”

Shamrock’s Ale House graciously offered to host a fundraiser event on Friday, November 11 to promote the Temple Terrace Bat Tower Reconstruction Project

(TTBTRP), an initiative of the Temple Terrace Preservation Society (TTPS) and the City of Temple Terrace. A portion of Shamrock’s sales made during the

event will be donated to the cause. All of the TTBTRP Bat Tower merchandise was also available for purchase. The event was well attended

and considered a big success. More than $800 of Bat Tower merchandise was sold. The Shamrock’s donation amount was still being tallied as this story went to press, but whatever amount received is welcome and greatly appreciated. About one third of the $50,000 amount needed to construct the new tower has been raised, so TTBTRP is still soliciting donations and/or in-kind donations of construction materials or labor. A Bat Tower Shop and the ability to make donations online is currently being added to the Bat Tower website. Please visit us at www.TempleTerraceBatTower.com if you would like to shop for Bat Tower merchandise, make a donation, or for more information about the project. You can also see us on Facebook by searching Temple Terrace Bat Tower Reconstruction Project.

The project recently received preliminary approval of the new site location, near Harney Road and I-75, from Swiftmud. Once the site location approval is finalized, construction of the base of the tower may begin! Our thanks go out to everyone at Shamrock’s Ale House for hosting our event and their support of the project.

The Mystery Diner, in search of a lunch place with a history of great food in a casual setting, took some friends out for a meal recently, and found near Temple Terrace, a super spot. Rubens Cuban Cafe serves a varied menu of Cuban food in a dining area with plenty of space and a view of hand-painted wall murals. The servers are friendly and attentive. The menu includes more than 20 sandwiches from a Philly steak and

cheese, corned beef and swiss, or a meatball sub to a barbecue Po Boy or a grouper sandwich with fries, salad or soup. There is a one-pound marinated hamburger as well. They have wraps, burritos and gyros and even mild, hot or barbecue wings. And if you still have room, the desserts range from sugar cookies and traditional flan to guava pastries and New York cheese cake.

I had a traditional Cuban sandwich, pressed of course, with a side of savory Spanish bean soup and some of those fried platanos. A friend had a roast pork sandwich with yellow rice and black beans. The other friend, who lacks a a taste for Latin fare, ordered a turkey wrap with swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo. Two of us had some of the best cafe con leche on this side of town, while the other settled for a soda. Rubens is open in the mornings for my favorite: Cuban toast and Cafe con leche, or sit down for a full breakfast of omelettes, eggs your way, pancakes, French toast along with your sides of bacon, sausage, grits, hash browns and even cereal. (You can tell TMD has been a frequent guest of this gem for years). And then there’s dinner: Grouper a la Cubana, Ropa Vieja (shredded beef sauteed with garlic, onions, tomatoes and peppers), Picadillo Criollo (finely ground beef seasoned with garlic, onions, tomatoes, pepper, olives and

capers), Pollo ala Parrilla (grilled lemon pepper chicken, herbs and olive oil), and a great combo dish called Around Cuba (roast pork, picadillo and ropa vieja served with black beans and rice). There are myriad meals for kids on the menu as well with grilled cheese, hot dogs, burgers, chicken strips. The Mystery Diner gives Rubens Cuban Cafe in Temple Terrace four and a half forks out of five for great dining experience for friends or family on any day of the week except Sunday.

Rotarians at Work – At Home

and All Over the World

You might think that meeting for breakfast every week at 7:15 would be a deterrent to maintaining members in a club. You would only think that if you have never visited the Rotary Club of Temple Terrace on a Tuesday morning at the IHOP at Morris Bridge & Fowler. These early morning risers know that getting to the meeting is well worth the camaraderie and fellowship that comes as part of the package. From the minute the bell rings at 7:30 until it signals dismissal at 8:30 the chatter is filled with humor, good

news and in general, a great way to start your day. You might also ask yourself what makes this club any different from any other service organization. For starters, Rotarians begin every meeting with the recitation of the Four Way Test:

In everything we think, do or say:• Is it the TRUTH?

• Is it FAIR to all concerned?• Will it build GOOD WILL and

BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?• Will it be BENEFICIAL

to all concerned? We know that we are part of a larger organization of members who recite and live by this set of rules in their everyday lives. Around the world, we are part of 34,000 clubs with 1.2 million members. That many people living by the 4 Way Test must be accomplishing something! Our top priority worldwide is eradicating polio. Thanks to Rotary and our international partners, the number of polio cases has dropped 99 percent worldwide

since 1988. But as long as polio threatens even one child, children everywhere are at risk. Rotary clubs are raising $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These funds support immunization campaigns in developing countries where polio remains a threat. Here in Temple Terrace, we dedicate our “Happy Dollars” to the Polio Plus fund. Happy Dollars are the “cost” of sharing a story or comment (especially a rival football team’s score) and generate $2000+ every year. Again, all done with good humor and in the name of good work. Several years ago, Rotarian Jim Ruhyle had an idea for a local project that would “be beneficial to all concerned”. He explained the “Broken Window” theory where even one unkempt house

could bring down a whole neighborhood. Partnering with the City of Temple Terrace Code Compliance Department, the club started clearing yards of overgrown

shrubbery and debris taking on about a dozen homes a year. The idea has been appreciated by neighbors who have come out to thank the club with refreshments and lots of thank you comments. The Neighbor-to-neighbor project is a good example of utilizing the 4 Way Test while building good will and better friendships.

By Dr. Chirag Shah, Pulmonary/Critical Care PhysicianFlorida Medical Clinic, P.A.Tampa, FL Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare and very serious blood vessel disorder of the lung. PH is different from regular hypertension. In regular hypertension (also known as high blood pressure), the arteries throughout a person’s body

are constricted. Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects only the arteries in the lungs and the right side of your heart that can lead to heart failure. When the walls of the blood vessels that lead to the lungs thicken and narrow, the pressure increases causing the right side of the heart to weaken, requiring the heart to work harder to pump the blood to the lungs. Over time, the right side of the heart may become enlarged. Eventually, not enough blood flows to the lungs to pick up oxygen, and symptoms begin. At this point, heart failure that involves the right side of the heart is present. This disease causes patients to experience symptoms such as breathlessness on exertion, chest pain (also called angina pectoris), dizziness upon standing, climbing

stairs, straightening up from a bent position, or even while just sitting, fainting (also called syncope), loss of energy, swollen ankles and legs (also called edema), depression, dry cough, Raynaud’s phenomenon (chalky white and/or dusky blue fingers that may be painful and can sometimes be provoked by the cold). PH affects people of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds. Although anyone can get PH, there are risk factors that make some people more susceptible. Pulmonary Hypertension is caused by multiple different etiologies including connective tissue disorders, liver disease, lung disease, cardiovascular disease, HIV infections and medications. In many cases, no cause can be identified, and in these cases the disease is referred to as idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH). A thorough medical history and physical examination, conducted

by your pulmonologist, is a crucial step toward proper diagnosis. Separating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) from pulmonary venous hypertension is essential for proper diagnosis. Although pulmonary hypertension is not curable, treatments are available that can help lessen symptoms and improve your quality of life. Dr. Chirag Shah specializes in performing dedicated right-heart catheterization to diagnose and confirm the diagnosis of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. Physicians at Florida Medical Clinic work with Primary care physicians, Pulmonologist, Cardiologists, and Rheumatologists to diagnosis and treat this challenging disease state. To learn more about the services we offer, visit our website at http://www.floridamedicalclinic.com or call (813) 788-6540.

The Temple Terrace Garden Club

n November 8, 2011 our Temple Terrace Friendship Club

held its Fall Fashion Show at the Temple Terrace Country Club on Inverness Avenue . We had over 200 women in attendance. It was such a wonderful event for all of us. As a member of the club for many years I was able to visit with many friends.

Janet Carr of Accessories and More provided the beautiful fashions. Members of our club were the lovely models. We all enjoyed shopping before and after the show.

Reeda Culbreath, chairman of the Fashion Show, entertained us with a nostalgic trip through the past with models dressed as various stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Carol Burnett, and Elizabeth Taylor.

We were honored to have some very special guests: Attorney General Pam Bondi and also our Temple Terrace Mayor Joe Affronti and his wife Liz.

On Tuesday December 13 we will meet for our Christmas celebration. We will have Christmas music to entertain us. Our dress will

be festive Christmas. We will be collecting Toys for Tots.

We get together each month on the second Tuesday for lunch and entertainment. Any woman can join who is sponsored by a member. We also sponsor two Bridge clubs. Reservations are

always necessary and can be made by calling Janet Pangborn at 985.0360.

ou might think that any group who has been meeting for 69 years

would be set in their ways and possibly not open to new ideas. Well, if you have ever met any of the men and women of the Temple Terrace Garden Club, you would know that you are wrong in that assumption. Now it’s not correct to even suggest that any of the present day members are of the original

Nothing Old about this Club

membership roll but some have been in the club for more years than they may want to admit. But again, they are always looking for new ways to improve the club itself and of course the environment they live in. A good example would be the garden at Riverhills Elementary school where a few dedicated volunteers are working with the school children to develop

healthy eating habits (and learn to recognize and pull weeds). Another example is the member-to-member plant exchanges arranged several times a year. Here you will see plants of every nature being promoted, explained and shared. Meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of every month was not possible for those who work during the day, so the club started hosting evening meetings with the sole purpose of talking “dirt” or in the garden world – anything related to plants – flowers and vegetables. On November 2, 2011, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners thanked the Temple Terrace Garden Club for its vision and humanitarian spirit on its 65th Anniversary. The Garden Club has demonstrated that dedication and hard work can create a beautiful city. Its members’ leadership, dedication and service have helped make Hillsborough County a great place to live, work and plan”. The

commendation was signed by Al Higginbotham, Chairman; Mark Sharpe, Vice Chairman; Sandra L. Murman; Victor Crist; Les Miller; Ken Hagan and Kevin Beckner. Norma Walker, President thanked the Board for the recognition. Take a look at our website www.templeterracegardenclub.shutterfly.com and decide for yourself if this is the group for you. You just might be a member longer than you will want to admit! Temple Terrace Garden Club meetings: Board of Directors on Wed., Dec. 7, Woodmont Clubhouse at 10:00 a.m. and General Membership on Dec. 14, 2011, Holiday Luncheon at Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club/ Punch at 11:30 a.m. and lunch at 12 noon. Entertainment and gift exchange will follow. The next evening meeting is scheduled for January 24th at 6:30 pm at the Woodmont Clubhouse with the topic being “To Prune or Not to Prune” (a timely topic if we have a freeze) and the above mentioned plant exchange – bring a plant and take a plant (and ask lots of questions in between).

John Watts, our founder, started his own agency in Pasco County in 1974. He and his answering machine moved into Temple Terrace in 1975 to look a for bit

larger customer base. Bob Dawson began a separate agency of his own in 1984 and they soon merged. The current VP of Operations, Shelly Levine, joined in 1985 and became a partner in 2005, as the firm enjoyed steady growth. In the last 7 years, we have purchased 5 additional agencies, adding locations in Brandon and Lakeland . We are pleased to have been recognized by many of our Insurance carriers through the years as President’s Council, Million Dollar Roundtable, and other Elite Agency designations. More importantly, the readership of The Tampa Tribune voted us Best of The Northeast for the last two years, 2009 and 2010. and we were awarded Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce Business

ith the winter and holiday seasons quickly

approaching, manychanges take place in the home. Although we are located in sunny south Florida, our home heating systems will still kick on and provide us with warmth the winter months so briskly take away. Home heating systems also bring dangers as well. But don't worry; there are some steps we can take toprevent home heating fires. Most home heating fires are caused by poorly maintained systems, systems not working properly, or improvised heating techniques. These fires can be more preventable by taking precautions that can make the difference between a safe and happy holiday and a tragic one.

When it comes to heating your home, safety should be a number one priority. Have a qualified technician inspect your heating

system prior to its peak usage season. If you have a fireplace and chimney in your home, schedule an inspection or cleaning to aid in preventing holiday fires. Before you go to sleep or head out for the night, make sure your fireplace fire is out and there are no hotspots remaining unwatched. Space heaters can be a great way to heat a room but should never be used beyond the manufacturer's recommendations. Kitchen ovens or gas grills should never be used as a heating source because an unsafe amount of carbon monoxide can build up in the home causing severe illness for even death.

Should you decide to have a Christmas tree or other decorations for your home, make sure you consider some of these safety tips. Keep your tree frequently watered and far away from any heating system you may have. Do not put any open flames on or near a tree and whenever possible

use decorations that are made with non-combustible materials. Unplug your tree prior to leaving home or going to bed and blow out any candles you may have. Take a few minutes to walk through your home and check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure outlets are not overloaded and that you have maintained a safe environment for you and your family.

These are just a few tips we hope will keep you and your family safe during this season. In our January article we will answer questions you may have about your Fire Department. Take some time to prepare any questions or concerns you may have. Send those to [email protected], and we will be happy to answer those for you. "Striving for Excellence... junior woman’s club

The GFWC Temple Terrace Juniorettes are moving through the holiday season by helping others. They held holiday parties

for their adopted special needs Girl Scout troop, they helped with the children's craft area at the Temple Terrace Arts Festival, and

they assembled and wrapped shoeboxes filled with toys and hygiene supplies for Operation Christmas Child. Their November meeting had an international emphasis as the girls shared food dishes from other countries. The guest of honor was Mary Jane Neale, past president of the

GFWC Temple Terrace Woman's Club, who spoke about her travels to over 110 countries. If you are a teenaged girl interested in community service and leadership development through the GFWC Temple

Terrace Juniorettes, please contact their advisor, Joyce Johnston, at 813-985-3533. The Juniorettes meet at Woodmont Clubhouse at 7:00 p.m. the first Monday of every month during the school year.

When GFWC Temple Terrace Junior Woman's Club members Anita Long and Cheri Donohue were invited to a "Lunch and Learn" at the Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County, they weren't sure what to expect. The facility, which is the only one if its kind in the State of Florida , is a one-stop resource center for domestic violence abuse victims. "We came away thinking, there has to be some way we can help,"

said Anita after touring the facility and hearing of the services offered by the Center. The two decided to request the Center's "Wish List", and with that in hand, the GFWC District 8 Day of Service was born. Nikki Daniels, Executive Director of

the Center gave the Temple Terrace Juniors the opportunity of refurbishing a room. It had all the basics, but needed some tender loving care to make it more comfortable. Donations of furniture and lamps were made possible by Design Buy Consign, 6718 East Fowler Ave in Temple Terrace . The Temple Terrace Juniors bought packages of new underwear and members donated juice boxes, individually wrapped

snacks, clothing, toys and games. Four additional GFWC Clubs: East Tampa Juniors, New Tampa Juniors, Tampa Juniors, and the Temple Terrace Woman's Club were represented at the Day of Service and donated many of the same wish list items plus diapers and the woman power to get the room in shape. At the GFWC Southern Region Conference, the weekend before the Day of Service, Southern Conference President Sue Ellen Brazil requested that GFWC attendees from five southern states: Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina and Florida - donate socks for the GFWC Sock Project, where socks are put in a quart size baggie and distributed to a local domestic abuse shelter. These donated socks were then given to the Family Justice Center in Tampa where they were distributed almost immediately, due to the recent cool weather! So that's what happens when you invite just two women to lunch, and they tell their friends, and they tell their friends and so on. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy didn’t read much growing up. Now, he’s hoping to inspire kids to experience what he missed out on. Through the fall and winter, Dungy and his wife, Lauren, are traveling to elementary schools in Hillsborough County to read to third-graders. They were in Temple Terrace to visit Temple Terrace Elementary and Riverhills Elementary. “I wasn’t a big reader as a kid, and I think for the boys especially, it’s good to see someone say that it’s important,” Dungy said. About 50 third-graders were waiting for the Dungys in Temple Terrace Elementary School ’s media center. They clapped and cheered when the couple arrived.

Their next book, “The Team Stays Together,” is based on their son getting lost at a football game. It will come out around Christmas. Tony Dungy began playing football in the NFL in 1977, and became a coach in 1981. He retired in 2009. Through the years, he has been involved in community service, working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action, Mentors for Life, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Clubs, the Prison Crusade Ministry and All Pro Dad. The Dungys left books with the third-graders and said they hoped the students would

take the books home and read them to their parents or have their parents read the books to them. They also left pencils so students could practice their writing. “We just really believe in education and opening the door to reading,” Lauren Dungy said.
