The Passover Seder is among the most widely observed Jewish rituals. We
enjoy coming together with family and friends and reenacting the story of our
ancestors’ liberation from Egyptian bondage. While this is the basic theme of
Passover, our holiday of freedom has many different spiritual components.
Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz teaches us that the Hebrew term for Passover,
Pesach, means the festival of “leaping.” The reason for this is that the newly
liberated Israelite slaves were not prepared to accept God as their sovereign,
having been beaten down and oppressed for 400-plus years in Egypt. Yet,
despite their lack of preparedness for the great spiritual task of accepting
God, they did so anyway in a kind of “leap of faith.”
In Rabbi Steinsaltz’s words (I am quoting him exactly, and since he refers
to God in the masculine, I have left his language as he wrote it, even though I
prefer gender neutral descriptions of God):
“The people of Israel at the time of the Exodus were still like a child,
learning for the first time who and what a ‘Father’ is, how to say
‘Father,’ and how to relate to Him. For such development to take
place, what is required is an attitude not built on methodical,
intellectual understanding, but one whose point of departure is that
man is ready to accept things that are without structured explanation
and beyond reason.” (“Change and Renewal,” p.231)
This is what the eating of matzah represents to Rabbi Steinsaltz. Matzah,
in contrast to leavened bread, is unrefined, simple and tasteless. Nothing
substantial has been added to it. So, too, in our spiritual development, the
basic building block of a relationship with God is not a keen, finely cultivated
and elaborately developed intellectual apprehension of the nature of God, but
rather an acceptance of God that defies reason and logic. It is about simply
accepting the reality of God. As he says,
“On the night of Pesach, each individual is required to make his own
jump and leap, and begin presenting himself to God. Only after this
stage of matzah is it possible to advance to higher levels of
awareness, the eating of regular bread--hametz.” (“Change and
Renewal,” p. 232).
Perhaps this notion strikes us as requiring too much of a leap, too much of
a blind acceptance of God, without any modicum of reason. Rabbi Steinsaltz
is aware of this and argues that it is precisely because we live in a highly
civilized and developed world, and because we view ourselves as wise and
discerning,
“...that we must return, time after time, to the point of simple and
basic faith, faith based on not knowing. We must know that there are
things we do not understand and will never be able to
understand.” (“Change and Renewal,” p. 233).
I hope that you are able to take some time to use Rabbi Steinsaltz’s

teachings to consider your own relationship to God. To what degree do you feel that he is right - that perhaps we rely
too much on reason and logic which binds us to a connection with the divine? Or is simple, basic faith, “theological
matzah,” simply incompatible with our scientific and technologically advanced world?
These are great questions to discuss at your Seder, and speaking of Seder, please join us for our Congregational Seder
on April 22 at 6:00 pm; more information is on the cover. This is a fun and meaningful experience for all generations and
I do hope to see you there.
Wishing you a meaningful and healthy Pesach.

Rabbi Laurence W. Groffman
Presidents’ Message
This month we are pleased to share exciting news with the congregation: after months of hard work, the cantor
search committee has almost completed the interview and audition process. This search was an extensive and
challenging journey embarked on by the committee whose members more than rose to the occasion. Our committee
comprises a wide cross section of congregational members under the leadership of Larry Steinman and Roberta
Shields and has been fully engaged in the search. They hope the final selection for a new cantor will help us find an
individual with warmth, passion and dedication, a perfect addition to our congregation.
Ed and I would like to thank the committee for their diligent work marking this important milestone in Temple
Sholom’s history. We appreciate the dedication of committee members, who spent many hours reviewing resumes,
conducting interviews, verifying references and meeting with candidates.
The retirement of Cantor Epstein, a longtime member of our temple family, reminds us of how close we have
become. Cantor has been with us for many life cycle events, presiding at baby namings, weddings, funerals, and B’nai
Mitzvah. We are grateful for her intelligent and caring connection to us and our families and we look forward to
celebrating her commitment to the Temple on June 10.
This opportunity to welcome a new cantor into our lives is truly a wondrous event. We were inspired and excited by
all of the candidates, their remarkable voices, their reverence for learning and tradition, and their commitment to
Judaism. Their excellence, however, has made the final decision we must make in the next few weeks extremely
difficult.
Nevertheless, we are anticipating a selection will be made shortly, negotiations will be swift and we will be able to
announce the name of our new cantor in the very near future.
Your Co-Presidents,
Ed Gold and Richard Jarmel
Please join us at our Passover Festival Service with Yizkor: April 29 at 10:00 am.
At this service, Andie Schwartz will read Torah in commemoration of her Bat Mitzvah

Book discussion by Naomi Patz
Saturday, April 16, 2016
10:30 am
Naomi calls it a “great read”. . . “the most sensitive
portrayal of Jews by a non-Jew I have ever read”.
You will want to mark your calendars now for her
discussion of this classic mystery set in Glasgow’s Jewish
community in 1947. Expect suspense, black humor, and
“a bloody trail back to the concentration camps.”
We are ordering books.
They should be available to check out
by the time you get this Shofar
or order it on your reading device.

Breakfast with Ruth Ravina
A Holocaust Survivor
Come meet Ruth Ravina, a remarkable woman and
Holocaust survivor who will tell her story to the Eighth
grade and the TSWE community on Sunday, May 1st at
10:00 am. It is a fitting way to acknowledge Yom HaShoah,
Holocaust Remembrance Day that occurs on May 5th.
.
Her story will inspire you . She had enormous courage and
resilience and a will to live.
Born in Poland in a small market town that was turned
into a ghetto by the Nazis, Ruth lived with her grand-
parents until one night she was helped to escape by other
young girls. What happens after that is a remarkable saga.
Ruth currently lives in Montclair. She raised two sons there
and was married to a talented violinist, Oscar Ravina who
played with the New York Philharmonic under Leonard
Bernstein.
Please RSVP to Rachel Sesser at
Bagels and coffee will be served.

Contributions to the funds of the congregation are always
appropriate, welcome and provide important revenue.
Tzedakah is very much a part of Jewish tradition, especially
when it is given to mark celebrations, to offer best wishes for recovery from illness (refuah sheleimah), offer condolences, and
at yahrzeit time, to remember loved ones. These gifts are put to constructive use to enhance the programs of our
congregation.
