A Collage of Customs! Part 2

So today we’re going to look at the Mitzvah of Kashrute, keeping kosher. (Joann and Chuck speak)Before we get into it let’s talk about how we should approach Jewish customs and Mitzvahs.

As Messianics we often follow Jewish customs that aren’t directly related to the Scriptures. Take the kippa for example.

We men wear the kippa to show solidarity with Israel and to identify with the Jewish people as well as to show respect by keeping our heads covered before a Holy G-d. Does a man HAVE to wear a kippa?

If they’re in leadership here, yes they do. But otherwise they don’t HAVE to. But here’s the problem with this kind of thinking of HAVE to.

Once it becomes a matter of HAVE to, then you’re already missing the point. There are blessings that come with many of these mitzvahs. G-d given blessings! for example..

As I wear the kippa, it opens many opportunities to where I can share with other people about my faith. It makes a statement in this valley that there are Jews here and that in itself causes people to think about faith.

Yeshua wore a head covering as well. All Jews did. So it’s obviously not wrong to do or Yeshua wouldn’t have done it. Do I HAVE to wear a kippa? I don’t think in those terms. I say I GET to wear a kippa. It is an honor, it is a privilege.

Let’s look at the Amidah now. It is a commandment from G-d for men to do the Amidah. It says this exactly… (slide) 9 You, therefore, pray like this: `Our Father in heaven….

It doesn’t say “if you want to pray like this, go ahead”. No! You pray like this. So the Amidah is hands down a commandment from Yeshua. What about the times? 9 and 3

for something as important as prayer, you can bet if the Jews weren’t doing it right, he’d have said so, He’d have corrected them! As I showed a couple weeks ago, the New Testament even gives us the times 9am and 3pm. It gives it to us on a platter.

Now, if you don’t want to do it, that’s your gig. I’m not the Amidah Authority or the Prayer Patrol.

I’m not going to regulate ANY mitzvahs (unless they can hurt others) in your life and you shouldn’t be trying to regulate anybody else's either except the members in your own immediate household.

Next week we’ll be talking about Christmas. I’m going to be telling you what’s wrong with it. If you still want to celebrate Christmas and as long as you’re not in leadership, that’s your gig

I’m not going to enforce that you can’t celebrate Christmas. But say you go ahead and you have a Christmas tree and you ask me for council about why your teen age son is out having premarital sex…

Guess what I’m going to say?I’m gonna tell you to get the giant decorated phallus out of your house. If you then try to tell me that Christmas trees are ok, I’m going to stand my ground.

Same goes for ALL the mitzvahs. If you don’t want to do them, that’s up to you.

But in my view and the view of Torah Light and ALL the Notzereem movement as well as ALL the Torah Observant Messianics out there, they stand in agreement on that.

Same goes for the Amidah. And allow me to let you in on something, if you got that many Born Again Jews agreeing on something. You better take a close look at it.

How many agree isn’t always the litmus test, but if they do all agree you better present a good detailed outline of why you think it’s wrong and if you start that outline with “well, I just believe…”

Then you’ve already lost the battle. You can’t base theology on “well I just believe”. Or “I feel in my heart”. Show me in Scripture and use good reason.

Because your heart may feel one way and the bother/sister next to you, their heart feels another way. Are you so proud that you think you’re heart is better then all your brothers here? The way we feel is NOT a litmus test!

So, like I said, the Amidah is a commandment for men. But it isn’t a commandment for women. I said long ago many of the positive commandments (thou shalt do) are not applicable to women.

Yeah they should do the Amidah if they can, they’ll get extra blessings and unless you can tell me that you’ve got more then enough blessings, then you should do the Amidah too.

It’s no different then lighting the Sabbath candles. Should you do it? Yeah. Is it directly related to the Scriptures? No. But tell me this…

By a show of hands first how many of you have been lighting the Sabbath candles on Shabbat. Of those very same people how many of you have experienced a blessing from it?

Same with the Amidah for women, you get a blessing for doing it. C’mon, can you really tell me just for the fact of focusing on G-d and talking to Him 2ce a day that it doesn’t give you some kind of fulfillment and draw you closer to HaShem?

Many of you from back when you were in the Church said prayers before you ate. If you’re like me and you eat 10 meals a day, that’s over ½ the Amidah right there. It’s a piece of cake.

There were Churches I attended that had prayer meetings 3-4 times a week. That’s longer then the Amidah too.

So, what if someone here doesn’t do the Amidah? Do we criticize them for it? No! We’ve talked about this before.

That individual may not be doing the Amidah but he/she may be doing 20 other mitzvoth that you aren’t doing. You don’t know.

One individual may have a Christmas tree in their house this year because their family is new to Messianic Judaism.

That same individual may feel shame that this phallus is still in their home yet they’re trying to bring their family along as they can.

Are you going to add to their shame? What is this a Church? We’re going to shoot our own wounded? Become exactly what Yeshua warned us NOT to be.

That person might be dreading that Christmas is coming up and that person maybe worrying that someone from this congregation might come over and see their shame.

Don’t allow the Adversary to use you in such a manner. At the same time, if you do have a Christmas tree in your home this year, don’t go trying to tell your brothers and sisters here that it’s ok to have one.

I guarantee you, you will find resistance. The best thing you can say to the others here concerning any mitzvah is, “I’m working on it”.

Perhaps you’d have applied that particular mitzvah to your life faster then that person who’s still working on conquering that mitzvah but

there are other mitzvahs that they were able to do right off the bat and you’re still struggling with that one.

You may be in complete denial concerning some of your own lack of mitzvahs so beware of the log in your own eye.

That doesn’t mean you cant say that Christmas trees are wrong. You can speak the truth just don’t use Torah as a beating stick on your brothers and sisters because you may appear very hypocritical to them.

You may have rejected other mitzvahs that have been taught about here and that individual with the

Christmas tree is looking at you saying, look at all the mitzvahs he or she isn’t keeping. I’m only struggling with one and he’s lost focus on ten. Remember, you’re not the Christmas Concierge.

I’ll make it simple… we’re Jews! we don’t criticize our brothers and sisters for not keeping certain mitzvahs (provided they’re not mitzvahs that can hurt other people like theft, murder adultery etc)

And if you’re not keeping certain mitzvoth, there’s no sense in trying to defend your position. Because no one here is going to believe that not keeping Mitzvoth is the way to go. They know it provides a blessing.

That being said, let’s talk about some more mitzvoth!Kashrute.I’ve taught on bits and pieces concerning Kashrute, lets dig a little deeper now.

We all know the basics, no pork. It’s horribly bad or your health. Pork eaters are more susceptible to the bird flu! Pig health.com says, (slide) “Pigs are an important host in influenza ecology since they are susceptible to infection from both human and avian influenza (bird flu).”

It must be understood that the lungs of a pig is very similar to that of a human. Pig lung is a main ingredient in sausage and it’s been found…

that people who eat sausage are more susceptible to influenza then those who don’t.We know pork is bad.What other animals are not kosher?

Shellfish. That includes lobster, crab, crawfish, clams oysters, shrimp, prawns, sea urchin if you’re dining in Asia. Did you know that… Shellfish are among the most common food allergens.

Go figure. They’re disgusting creatures, they eat the doo doo from all the other fish. They are unclean. Not unclean like a woman during her cycle, that is kodesh (set apart) eating shellfish is unclean, it is filthy.

It kills me when I hear people say, oh, but they’re delicious. That’s what they think about cats and dogs in Vietnam. The delicious argument shouldn’t work for ya.

BTW dogs and cats are unkosher, that means you can’t eat them. For those of you watching this taped video in foreign countries, “step away from Fido, you shouldn’t be feeding them dog food to fatten them up”

Horses, camels and lamas are unkosher. Elephants.. Unkosher.What about a giraffe? It’s kosher. Cleft hoof and chews the cud.

Let’s look at the Biblical regulations… (slide) Deut. 14: "You may eat any animal that has a split hoof divided in two and that chews the cud.

(slide) However, of those that chew the cud or that have a split hoof completely divided you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the coney. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a split hoof;

(slide) they are ceremonially unclean for you. The pig is also unclean; although it has a split hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses."

“But I work in a restaurant and I have to touch pig for my job”. Just like with any mitzvah, it is a higher mitzvah to provide for your family. But if at all possible, find a way to not have to break His Commandments.

Same for Shabbat, if you have to work on Shabbat, you work but you try your best to find a way not to and G-d will help you with that and may even provide a miracle if you’re serious about obeying His Laws.

Sometimes it’s not possible and it may never be possible. Say you’re in the medical field or a policeman or fireman. That’s when G-d will give you grace.

He doesn’t grant us grace when we simply choose not to obey Him. That’s never sanctified.

Octopus, eel, not kosher.(slide) Lev 11:9 " 'Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales. 10 But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have.

(slide) fins and scales--whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water--you are to detest. 11 And since you are to detest them, you must not eat their meat and you must detest

(slide) their carcasses. 12 Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be detestable to you (not mmm, it’s delicious) The longer you keep kosher the more unkosher foods become detestable to you.

Pam, how long have you been keeping Kashrute? How would you like a pork sandwich right now? DETESTABLE. It’s important we find the mind of G-d on things.

(slide) 13 " 'These are the birds you are to detest and not eat because they are detestable:

(slide) the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, 14 the red kite (related to the eagle family), any kind of black kite, 15 any kind of raven, 16 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,

(slide) 17 the little owl, the cormorant (sea ravens), the great owl,

(slide) 18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey (type of hawk), 19 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.

(slide) 20 " 'All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. 21 There are, however, some winged creatures that

(slide) walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground.

(slide) 22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper.

(slide) 23 But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest.

So let’s see what else this includes… catfish, snails (escargot), porpoise, sturgeon are questionable. They have fins and scales, but they’re not typical scales.

The Ramban says it’s not kosher because the scales are embedded. He has a good argument about it.

I’m 50/50 on it and when we start writing down our own Halacha here we can make a determination of our own for this group. Everyone will have a voice, then we will take it to the Beit Din and vote on it.

dolphin, whale, scallops, frogs, snake, reptiles, (slide) Lev. 11:29 "'The following are unclean for you among the small creatures that swarm on the ground: the weasel, the mouse, the various kinds of lizards,

(slide) 30 the gecko, the crocodile, the skink, the sand-lizard and the chameleon.” pelicans, storks, swans all unkosher.Eggs from non-kosher birds and fish are also non-kosher.

Badgers, rodents are unkosher, no rhinoceros or hippo. No sea cucumbers, No jellyfish, swordfish or turtles or amphibians.

But are each one of these that I’ve listed actually mentioned in the Bible? No, that’s because the only ones that are mentioned that aren’t covered by description, live in Israel.

Alligators aren’t native to HaAretz, but alligators are crocodilian, so are caiman.

So this isn’t an exhaustive list of animals but it covers most of them.But let’s now look at the difference between Messianics and Rabbinical Jews concerning Kashrute.

we agree in the vast majority with Orthodox Judaism as to which animals are kosher and which ones aren’t. But then we begin to differ when it comes to shechitah

Shechitah, what’s that? It’s how the animal is supposed to be slaughtered.Now, it’s not so much a difference that we have between the orthodox and ourselves…

It’s more of a relaxation that Messianics including myself and Torah Light have at times been forced to adopt.for example, we don’t have a Shochet,

A Shochet is the person who does the slaughtering in the correct way as described in the Torah and the Talmud. we don’t have one. So, what can we do?

we do the best we can for now. In India I had more control over the chicken I ate. I knew the butcher and I was able to have translated to him what we wanted. Here in the US, I don’t know any local butchers.

So, like you, I go to the local grocery store and buy our meat there. for the most part, from what I understand, here in the US they do usually let the blood drain out of the animals.

I heard that isn’t so true about KfC so I stopped eating there altogether. I was told and I saw a YouTube video where they kill the chickens

by boiling them alive and even de-feather them while they’re still alive.

If this is true, that is strictly against Scripture. (slide) In Deut 12 we are told to let the blood run out of the animal 23 Just take care not to eat the blood, for the blood is the life, and you are not to eat the life with the meat.

(slide) 24 Don't eat it, but pour it out on the ground like water. 25 Do not eat it, so that things will go well with you and with your children after you, as you do what ADONAI sees as right.

I believe G-d’s word is true and If you know that the animals blood is in it and you eat it, things wont go as well with your family.There is even stronger verbiage used in LEV 7:26-27

(slide) Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings. Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

Also, an adjustment I recently made and I know many of you here have done so as well. Costco’s lamb is all Halal. That means that it’s been offered to the arch demon of Islam, Allah. In English you say “Allah”

You can verify that by looking at the stamp they have on their meat which says it’s halal.

Not all of it is stamped, but I’ve talked to some of the people in charge at Costco and they verified that all their lamb is indeed Halal.

(slide) This is again directly against Scripture. Acts 15 says in verse 19 wherefore I judge: not to trouble those who from the nations do turn back to God, 20 but to write to them to abstain from the pollutions of the idols,

(slide) and the whoredom, and the strangled thing; and the blood; (YLT)Pollutions of idols is another way of saying something that is offered to idols such as Halal.

This is an injunction to anyone who believes in Yeshua including G-d fearers.So all Christians should be following this Law. The Christians claim that all they have to do is keep Acts 15, this passage…

And yet, very, very few of them even do that. “well, who around here these days offers food to idols???”

The Thai restaurant right down the street does.when you walk in on the left hand side they have a pretty little shrine made up there with little bowls containing little bits of food from each batch of food they produce for that day!

It is food directly offered to idols.Now, we have to understand there is a difference between food directly offered to idols

and a restaurant where the people there are of a different religion.what If the cook is a Muslim? well, if he’s not formally offering that food to a demon, you can eat there.

what If the owner is a Buddhist? Again, If they are not formally offering the food to a demon, you can eat there.

“But I saw another restaurant in town and they had a Buddha in there”. It doesn’t count. I’ll tell you why…

If you were to go by that rule you would have to discount every restaurant unless every person there was Messianic.

Including most Christian ones. You don’t know where the Christian restaurants get their meat from. They don’t care If their lamb is halal, they’re covered by the blood of Jesus, they’re under grace.

And even in Christian owned restaurants, they’re not all Born Again. I worked in the restaurant business for years, any one of those waiters could be saying evil prayers over the food. we have no idea.

So the best way to go is If they are formally offering food to idols, such as Halal and restaurants that take bits of the food and sacrifice it on a shrine, then don’t eat there.

Eventually, we will have a full on Messianic community here.we’ll have a butcher, a baker and a candle stick maker.

Many of you are not ready for that though yet. we have Messianics right here who have businesses and many of you aren’t even using them when you could be using them.

“But I’ve been using my guy for years”. Or “I don’t like that product as much as the other one I use”. Or “It’s clear across town” etc, etc, etc.But how would this look practically?

Say we had an interior decorator and you say, ok, I’ll give him a shot. He draws up the plans for you and his idea is to make your house look like a UfO. well, I don’t want my house to look like a UfO

what do you do? You want to be faithful with what G-d has given you but there’s no way, he’s changing my house into a UfO. Of course you don’t go through with it, but you gave it a shot.

That’s all G-d is asking from us. That we give it an honest try.

Tell me I’m wrong about that? If we had a Shochet, a kosher butcher, would you give it an honest try? It would cost a little bit more, that’s true, so what would you do? would you use a Shochet?

But I can tell you this…If we’re not faithful in using the little business opportunities He’s provided for us in this group, He’s not going to give us more opportunities to squander.

So, we’re going to be opening the table out in the foyer for anyone here to put out their business cards or brochures and so forth.

If you have a business, put out your info today or bring it next week. People will see what you put out there every week as they pass by.

I know some of you are using each others services and I think that’s great. we talked about this subject a while back ago, but we went a little more in depth this time and tied in the Shochet and Kashrute.

(slide) Let’s summarize: 1. None of us are the Christmas Concierge. That doesn’t mean we don’t speak the truth but we also don’t beat it over the heads of our brothers and sisters. Others out there, tell them what you know.

(slide) 2. If you do celebrate Christmas this year, don't try to defend it in front of the brothers and sisters here, I know our people, they wont let you get away with it.3. Not keeping G-d's mitzvoth is your deal not mine.

(slide) 4. Gain the mind of G-d concerning unclean foods and step away from Fido5. Start paying attention to the foods you buy at the grocery store and which restaurants you choose, you may be breaking one of G-d's Holy Laws.6. And lastly… Are YOU ready for a Shochet?
