Passover Food Quiz
Take the following quiz. Which of the following foods are you allowed to eat on Passover?
a. Corn b. Rice c. Beans d. Peanut butter e. None of the above f. All of the above
The answer: It depends! Did you ever wonder why matzah is made of wheat yet you are not suppose to eat wheat on Passover? The Mishnah tells us there are five species of grains that can leaven and therefore must not be eaten in its leavened form on Passover. These are: wheat, barley, spelt, oats, and rye. You are supposed to eat from one of the five grains that CAN leaven, but eat them before they leaven. Then you fulfill the mitzvah of not eating leavened food on Passover. Matzah is made in a way to bake the flour before it has a chance to leaven. Therefore foods that don’t leaven, such as those foods listed above, are not relevant. According to Sephardic Jewish tradition, kitniyot, which includes beans, legumes, rice, and corn, don’t leaven, and are allowed to be eaten on Passover.
So why do Ashkenazi Jews avoid eating kitniyot on Passover? “It appears that we should support the custom and prohibit all kitniyot on Passover, not as true hametz, for that is an error, but as a decree because kitniyot are cooked, as grain is cooked, in a porridge, and were we to permit kitniyot [people] might come to substitute and permit [grain-based] porridge...” (Rabbeinu Peretz (France 13th c.) In other words, people might feel free to make food out of the forbidden grains because they are similar to the kitniyot.
Other Ashkenazi rabbis disagreed. “If I had the strength I would abolish this terrible custom, a stringency... Matzot are expensive; not everyone can afford as much as they need... but kitniyot are available cheaply and easily and are permitted, so that they [the restrictive school] come to prevent the joy of the holiday through this

stricture that has no reason... Therefore I say: He who cancels this custom of avoiding eating kitniyot, I shall be with him.” (Commentary to the Tur)
In 2015 the Conservative Rabbinical Association declared: In order to bring down the cost of making Pesah and support the healthier diet that is now becoming more common, and given the inapplicability today of the primary concerns that seem to have led to the custom of prohibiting kitniyot, and further, given our inclination in our day to present an accessible Judaism unencumbered by unneeded prohibitions, more easily able to participate in the culture that surrounds us, we are prepared to rely on the fundamental observance recorded in the Talmud and codes and permit the eating of kitniyot on Pesah.
So you decide. If you were raised with the idea that corn, rice, and beans are prohibited on Passover, and you want to maintain family traditions you might choose to continue these restrictions. If you feel that they have made observing Passover a burden and less healthy, then according to this interpretation of Jewish law, you are free to add kitniyot to your Passover diet. I think the Rice Krispies are calling me!

PASSOVER - CUSTOMS & RITUALS
Along with Sukkot and Shavuout, Passover is one of the Shalosh Regalim, or Three Pilgrimage Festivals, during which people gathered in Jerusalem with their agricultural offerings in ancient times. There are several mitzvot (commandments) unique to Passover, which are evident in the customs and rituals of the holiday to this day: matzah (the eating of unleavened bread); maror (the eating of bitter herbs); chametz (abstention from eating leaven); b’iur chametz (removal of leaven from the home); and haggadah (participation in the seder meal and telling the story).
The seder is the centerpiece of any Passover experience. A seder is an elaborate festive meal that takes place on the first night(s) of the holiday of Passover. Family and friends join together to celebrate. The word seder literally means "order," and the Passover seder has 15 separate steps in its traditional order. These steps are laid out in the Haggaddah, the book used during the seder. Many congregations hold a community seder during at least one night of Passover.
Torah: Following an ancient practice of Babylonian Jews that is now observed throughout the world, the Five Books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) are divided into 54 sections called parashat hashevua, the weekly portion. A different section is read each Shabbat. Special sections of the Torah are designated to be read at each Jewish holiday. Often, these sections are thematically related to the holiday. The Torah reading for the first day of Passover is taken from Exodus 12:37-42 and 13:3-10, which describes the Exodus from Egypt, the basis for the Passover story. The Haftarah reading, an additional selection from the Prophetic books, is Isaiah 43:1-15.

Nancy Isseks and Carolyn Richman are making their plans to bring the Temple gardens back to life with colorful flowers and plantings. They will be replacing anything that has not made it through the winter as well as refresh, rejuvenate, and maintain the established gardens and plantings. Additional projects will depend on the availability of funds.

Murder for Two is a musical about murder. If resemblances to Sweeney Todd spring to mind you can quickly dismiss them. It’s more like The Mystery of Irma Vepp or Ionesco’s theater of the absurd. This is a comedy, as zany and manic as you can get, and probably the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
Murder for Two has been called “Ingenious!” by the New York Times. Critics around the country have hailed it as one of the best contemporary Off-Broadway musicals, calling it a “tour de force” and “vaudeville style romp”.
