Special Guests for Shabbat Services
Friday, September 9, 2016 at 7:30 PM
Issac Assor was our cantorial soloist last year for High Holy Days. We are blessed that he and Nissa Kahle, the accompanist, will be returning again this year to enhance our High Holy Day experience. Isaac and Nissa will be coming to Monticello on Friday, September 9th to rehearse with Rabbi Medwin. They agreed to stay for Shabbat services that evening and will be singing some of the music for High Holy Days as a preview. Isaac sang some of the songs from High Holy Days for his recent Masters degree recital. Here is a link to that part of his recital.

From the Rabbi...Yizkor –
Personalizing Our Memories
Yizkor is the future tense of the Hebrew verb – to remember. During the High Holy Days, as we reflect on the past, the loss of our loved ones is particularly intense. We may remember Holy Days gone by in which they were with us. In this season of teshuvah and repentance, we might want to apologize posthumously for ways we may have wronged them. We might also find the spiritual strength to offer forgiveness for things they did that hurt us.
The Temple Sholom Ritual Committee has worked hard to come up with ways to enhance our Yizkor Service experience on Yom Kippur and make it more personal. Look for the following additions to our Yizkor Service this year:
• Memory Wall - If you come into the sanctuary you will notice a “Memory Wall” on the back far side of the room. You are invited to take a blank 3x5 white index card to memorialize a loved one. You may include his or her name, a special memory, something unique about that person, a favorite poem or reading, a picture, etc. This wall will be up from now until the end of High Holy Days.
• Time to Reflect – During the Yizkor service we will have quiet meditative music for several minutes for you to be able to reflect on memories of your loved ones.
• Kaddish – Before reading the Kaddish prayer, people will be asked to rise and individually offer names of their loved ones they are remembering out loud.
• Booklet of Yizkor Names – The list of Yizkor names in booklet form will be put on the Memory Wall as well as handed out to everyone in attendance.
We hope that these additions will help to enhance your Yizkor experience and add meaning to the mitzvah “to remember.”

18 Voices Sing Kol Nidre:The Secrets of a Sacred Chant
From Those Who Have Been Touched By It
!
How did the Kol Nidre become a Jewish anthem and an object of intense interest for non-Jews?
We find out when 18 voices sing Kol Nidre, when 18 storytellers share their tales, their anecdotes, about the prayer. Some are top experts on the chant, some are just those who have been changed by chanting it. Each tells his or her story with the help of unique visuals and a unique musical setting for the haunting melody.
The 18 voices—18 storytellers—include a Hassidic rabbi who tells the tale of a stable boy who is illiterate and can’t read the Kol Nidre prayer, an African-American author Julius Lester, a convert to Judaism as an adult, a legal scholar who goes back to the Middle Ages to paint the scene, a film critic who shows how the prayer burst onto the general pop scene with the first talking film, “The Jazz Singer” in 1927, and a composer who demonstrates how the chant has reached beyond Jewish circles.
In short, we learn the secrets of a sacred chant from those who have been touched by it.

HONORING OUR TEMPLE MEMBERS ON THE HIGH HOLY DAYS -‐5777
A synagogue is much more than the bricks and mortar used to construct the building. It is the people who are members of the synagogue who make the congregation what it is. Each year during High Holy Day services we like to take a moment to thank all of those members of the Temple who have been active in various ways to make Temple Sholom the special place it is. We will be calling the following groups of people up to the Bima for a special blessing during the following services:
Erev Rosh Hashanah – Mitzvah MembersRosh Hashanah Morning – VolunteersErev Yom Kippur – Service RegularsYom Kippur Morning – Adult Learners
We hope you will be present so we can offer you a special blessing for your involvement in the Temple.
At Temple Sholom we have a wonderful opportunity three times a year to send Holiday Greetings to our temple
friends and family through our newsletter, The Harbinger. Here is an opportunity to do this in advance
for all three holidays: High Holy Days, Chanukah, and Passover.
Complete this form and mail with a check to the Temple so your holiday wishes will be seen
by all your Temple family and friends.
Check one, two, or three holidays. Your listing will appear at the appropriate time.
The cost is $18 for each individual greeting or $50 for all three greetings.
I would like to send Greetings for:

The Blue Horizon Diner was buzzing with energy at the July 25 Temple Card Party. We had 124 people playing games, enjoying lunch and winning raffle prizes. Thanks to the support, participation and generosity of many people we raised almost $1,400 for our Temple in addition to having a fun afternoon. Our gratitude to Paula Schroeder who spearheaded the effort with the assistance of Sue Horowitz. We thank the diner for the wonderful lunch and service. We thank the community businesses who donated raffle items and we thank Bob Kassman, Ruth Turk and Rosemary Heins who solicited them. Individual donors of raffle items included Ida Drucker, Bonnie Kirsch, Sue Hochman, Ruth Spolansky, Mary Jane and David Harris, Sue Horowitz, Mindy Barcham, Sylvia Russo, and Barbara Wolensky. Thanks to our workers who helped make it all happen: Bonnie Kirsch, Lauren Miller, LinZ Redding, Mary Jane Harris, Sheila Epstein and Helene Marmer. And finally we thank Stephanie Millett in the temple office.
