Rabbi’s Message
Believe it or not, we stand on holy ground. However, in a
Cleveland winter, the holy ground is frozen. Fortunate then, that we
will find warmth as we begin the miraculous saga of our ancestors'
enslavement and exodus from Egypt. The protagonist, of course,
will be Moses. But the book of Exodus does not open with Moses'
commission by God at the burning bush. The Torah prepares us
gradually for this. We learn the names of the families which accom-
panied Jacob to Egypt, that Joseph and all his generation had died,
and that a new Pharaoh arose in Egypt who did not know Joseph.
The portion continues with the unusual circumstances surrounding Moses' birth,
being cast afloat in a basket by his sister Miriam, his upbringing, his gallant acts in
defense of justice, his action in solidarity with his oppressed brethren, and his flight to
the land Midian. In Midian he meets the daughters of Jethro, helps them water their
flocks, and marries Zipporah.
At long last, in chapter 3, Moses arrives at the burning bush. An angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a blazing fire out of the bush. He gazed, and there was a bush all
aflame, yet the bush was not consumed. God called to him out of the midst of the
burning bush. "Moses, Moses!" Moses replied, “Hineni!” “Here I am!” Then God
said, “Do not come closer. Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on
which you stand is holy ground.”
Why remove your sandals? Rabbi Gunther Plaut suggests that one must be as clean
as possible when in the presence of God, and since shoes accumulate dirt, they must be
removed. Another interpretation is that one should lower one's status in front of God
in a gesture of self-abnegation.
Yet another interpretation teaches that by removing the sandals which he wore eve-
ryday and standing in his bare feet, Moses symbolically abandoned his routine person-
ality and transcended to a higher level of awareness. This teaches, that Godliness is
not only in some far off place, but is in the here and now where each person stands. If
we attempt to turn our ordinary place into a meeting place with God, it too can become
holy ground, like the ground upon which Moses stood.
How do we turn our place on earth to a meeting place with God? As Jews we do
this through mitzvot, through commandments -- our day-to-day actions through which
we respond to day-to-day realities. By our actions holy ground is within our grasp, if
only we would recognize our capabilities and reach out.
Let me close with one of my favorite rabbinic student stories: At the Hebrew Un-
ion College, there was a fine prospective student. The student was well prepared to
answer the committee's questions concerning Judaica. The candidate's diligent studies
in Bible and Rabbinics had paid off. Then, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel z’l, one of
the members of the committee, softly asked the following question. “Suppose you
were to go for a week to a secluded desert island. What would you take along with
you?” The student looked piously at Heschel and answered: “A Bible.” After a
pause, Heschel continued: “And nothing else?” The candidate thought and said: “Oh
yes, and a tractate of Talmud!” But Heschel pressed on, “And nothing else?” The
candidate, lost in thought, then came up triumphantly with: “Yes, of course, I would
take a Siddur, prayer book, for my daily prayers.” At this point Heschel looked at the
candidate kindly and said: “All the things you mentioned, are of course necessary, but
above all, I think that you must not forget to take along a few sandwiches and a
sweater.”
While aspiring to rise to the heavens of piety and Godliness, we must not forget the
ground upon which we stand. It is ground, not heaven, and a few sandwiches and a
sweater are always needed. Through our actions we can make our ordinary ground
into "holy ground." Continued on page 3

Rabbi’s Message, from page 2
Allow me to express gratitude to all of those who labor to make the ground at Temple Israel Ner Tamid into “holy
ground.” Thank you to our officers, board members, religious school teachers, volunteers, congregants, temple administrator and
maintenance staff. The Annual Meeting is an excellent opportunity to hear the state of our congregation and to voice your support,
questions and/or concerns. Each member is cordially invited to attend on Sunday morning, January 24. We will begin after the
religious school students are dismissed to their classes: 9:15 a.m. Continental Breakfast; 9:30 a.m. Annual Meeting. The meeting
will conclude before 11:30 a.m.
Also, please read this TINT IsraeLight carefully, it is filled with announcements, ideas and requests for your active participation
at services, in tzedakah, adult education, socializing, fundraising and interfaith activities.
God, give us the courage to sanctify Your name through mitzvot. Then, we will be partners with You in the ongoing work of
creation -- the creation of “holy ground.”
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
In December, our congregation
was enriched by the addition of
the following new members:
Harvey & Judy Wiseberg,
Svetlana & Stas Tsiperson and

When 4 year old Sam opened the family bible, something fell out of it. He picked up the object and looked at it. It was old leaf that had been pressed between the pages. "Mummy, look what I found," he said. "What have you found, bubbeleh?" she asked. Sam whispered, "I think it's Adam's underwear."
Come buy a Raffle ticket and support our Temple. You have a chance to win a portable heating system for your home or office.

Christians United For Israel (CUFI)
Program to Honor Israel
Sunday, January 17, 2010 * 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Beachwood High School
As a rabbi, and a supporter of Israel, I plan to attend the CUFI program. It is free and open to people from all walks
of life. This is a first-time event in Cleveland, although many “nights to honor Israel” have been held throughout the
country over the past decade. Our congregant, Max Edelman will be one of the featured speakers. Max and I agree that,
as a practical consideration, it is good to seek out supporters of Israel.
CUFI has modeled itself after AIPAC -- America Israel Public Affairs Committee -- in its advocacy efforts on behalf
of Israel. It is an organization of religious Christians who want to show their support of Israel. It is not an attempt at
conversion. I have a close colleague in California who has participated in CUFI programs and has told me his
interactions have been positive ones.
Last year, a woman in Cleveland emailed me a link for CUFI. I watched it, was amazed and humored, and kept it in
the back of my mind. However, last summer, my thinking was significantly affected by the work of author, Zev
Chafets. He grew up a Jewish kid in Pontiac, Michigan, and moved to Israel in 1967. He has written a wide variety of
books and spends much of his time in New York City. When he researched his 2007 book, his Jewish friends in New
York thought he had lost his mind. And he realized that his Jewish friends had never met, nor had they ever broken
bread with, nor had a serious discussion with, the subjects of his research.
Chafets’ 2007 book is titled, A Match Made In Heaven: American Jews, Christian Zionists, and One Man’s
Exploration of the Weird and Wonderful Judeo-Evangelical Alliance. I highly recommend it to you.
Chafets points out, a large number of Jews brush-off Christian fundamentalist support because of profound
misunderstandings of fundamentalist Christianity.
(1) For those among us who say, “oh, they only love us to convert us, so it will bring about the second coming of
Jesus” Chafetz points out, Christianity teaches you cannot push the time of the second coming... it is God’s time, not
human time. There is nothing a person can do to push the time of Jesus’ return. They don’t only love us and want us to
move to Israel to hasten the second coming. They actually love us...the people of the book...God’s chosen people
(Exodus 19:6, also Genesis 12:3 ).
So, if they only love us until their awaited second coming... and it’s God’s time? It’s good enough for me. Why not
accept their love and support?
(2) There are Jews who say... okay, well I’m not quite sure why they love us, but I don’t trust them. Which, of
course, is a good, skeptical answer...as far as it goes. Here is some additional, good information. There are people in
the world, anti-Semites and others, who hate us, really hate us...are jealous of us...want us exterminated...and deep down
we’re not exactly sure why they hate us so much, but it is true... they hate us. We’d like them to like us, but they
don’t...no matter what we say and do...we try to help them, but they still hate us. So why not accept love from people
who profess to love us, even if we can’t entirely understand why they love us?
To make it personal, how many of you are married, or have children, or have parents, or have siblings, or have
relatives? Do you always understand why they love you? Or do you always understand why you love them? Even if
you don’t entirely understand, isn’t it smart to accept their love in as much as you can?
(3) Chafets’ third point says that if they love us only for God’s time, and even if we don’t exactly understand their
love, what does it say about us? Many of us don’t accept their support of Israel because we disagree with them on a
variety of social issues?

Christians United for Israel—Continued from page 5
However, in so many areas of life, we can agree to agree when and where we
can, and we can agree to disagree when and where we do. What does it say
about our ability to have relationships? Is there anyone with whom you agree
100% of the time? You probably don’t even agree with yourself 100% of time.
If you can have a relationship with someone with whom you agree sometimes
— and disagree sometimes — the same should be true of Jews, and we should
open ourselves to fundamentalist Christians’ support for Israel, even though
we will differ on a variety of social issues. But, we’re not talking about the
variety of social issues here. We’re talking about the actual life of the State of
Israel.
You know, President Ahmadenajahd of Iran said it again on Erev Rosh
Hashanah (9/18/09). He reiterated that Israel will not exist for much
longer. We need to take his words seriously. We Jews have learned, through
painful experience, that just because you think someone is a madman and his
ramblings seem crazy, it does not mean he isn’t serious. If he gets the chance,
if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, their leadership will try to destroy Israel and
us.
I hope you will join the Edelmans, Eisenbergs and others, as we gather to
support Israel with Christians who are like-minded.
