(Dirty) Birds of a Feather For the second week in a row, Temple’s first year quarterbacks coachGlenn Thomas will face an old colleague. UCF safeties coach AndrewThacker served as a defensive assistant with the Falcons last seasonwhere Thomas was the quarterbacks coach.

PLAYING IN THE BIG HOUSESTemple is used to spending Saturdays at NFL stadiums; the team sharesLincoln Financial Field with the Eagles. However, the program isn’t usedto road games at those famous stadiums. The Owls hadn’t visited onesince facing Minnesota at the Metrodome in 2006. This season, Templehas two road dates at NFL stadiums, September 19th to take on UMass atGillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, and November 14that Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for USF.

Lucky 13The Owls are also one of four teams to have lead by 13 points or more ineach game. The other three schools are FSU, LSU, and Baylor. All theseteams are undefeated and are currently in the top 50 nationally in scoringoffense and top 51 in scoring defense. The Owls are looking to continuetheir stingy ways from last year, when they finished 2014 at fourth in scoringdefense at the FBS level.

It’s a Long DriveA tradition following a Temple victory is the football team, led by assistanthead coach Ed Foley, singing “High Hopes.” Philadelphians are familiarwith the song popularized by former Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalaswho made it his personal anthem. Stealing Kalas’ material has becomecommonplace. His signature home run call, “…it’s a long drive” has be-come a benchmark for the 2015 Owls. They have mounted a long drivein four of the first five contests that have changed the complexion of thegame.

Owls vs. O’LearyTemple has a fairly long history lining up against teams led by GeorgeO’Leary before joining a conference with UCF. In the 1980s, O’Learyserved as an assistant coach at Syracuse University. The two teamsplayed six times in the seven years O’Leary worked with the Orange, with each team winning three games. The Owls won three straight from1981-83, led by Coach Hardin and later Coach Arians. Temple quarter-back Tim Riordan had his first 200-yard game when he threw for 220and two scores in a 23-18 win at Syracuse on September 11th, 1982.That win was the Owls’ first at Syracuse since 1949.

well travelled owls2015 will be the first time under Coach Rhule that the Owls play two roadgames in the same state. Under his predecessor, Temple played visitortwice to Keystone state rivals Penn State and Pittsburgh in 2012. Theprevious year, they played three MAC conference games in Ohio. Thelast time the Owls played twice in another state was 1982, when theOwls won at Syracuse but lost at Colgate.

THE PHILADELPHIA SACK EXCHANGESeptember 5th was a banner day for the Owls pass rush, recording tensacks against the Nittany Lions. The effort set a new conference recordand eclipsed the record set in 2009. Here are the Owls’ top 5 sack per-formances since 1999.

PASSING THE BUCKJunior QB P.J. Walker usually is the one flinging the pigskin for the Owls.Against Penn State, he was on the receiving end of a John Christopherwide receiver throwback for 25 yards and delighted the home crowd.Surprisingly, this wasn’t the Manning Award nominee’s first career re-ception. Against Central Florida last year, Jalen Fitzpatrick completed apass to Walker for 14 yards.

Catamount ConnectionsSaturday night will be a renewal of acquaintances for former colleagues. At Western Carolina University in 2004, Owls head Matt Rhule was thelinebackers and special teams coach. During practice, his position groupwould line up against the tight ends and running backs, coached byBrent Key. Key now serves under George O’Leary as the Knights’ offen-sive coordinator. Owls cornerbacks coach Fran Brown was a defensiveback on that Catamount team. Temple’s offensive coordinator MarcusSatterfield was on the staff, as was UCF’s offensive line coach Allen Mo-gridge.

Sensational Scoring StreaksThe Owls have put up points in every quarter this season except for the1st quarter against Penn State. The Owls have played 20 quarters offootball and have allowed points in only nine of those. In every gamethere has been at least one quarter where Temple held their opponentscoreless, including three each against Penn State and Charlotte.

let’s talk about sacks“The Bash Brothers,” senior LB Tyler Matakevich and defensive end NateD. Smith have brought the bashing to opposing quarterbacks this season.Matakevich’s three sacks against Penn State surpassed his career total en-tering the game (2.5). The prolific performance fell one short of the Owls’single game record of four, reached by Decara Burgess against Pittsburghin 1997 and Dan Klecko at UConn in 2002. Smith currently is second theconference with a career-high 5.5 sacks and is eighth in FBS.

EYES ON THE POSTSEASON AWARDSSix Owls have made it to the preseason watch lists of 10 different awards.Senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich has five nominations, including the LottIMPACT Award tops among all American Athletic Conference defenders.Senior center Kyle Friend is one of two centers in the conference to earnwatch lists for the Rimington (top center) and the Rotary Lombardi Award(top lineman). Temple also has the only conference offensive backfield witha running back (Jahad Thomas; Doak Walker Award, Hornung Award) andquarterback (P.J. Walker; Manning Award) earning spots on preseasonwatch lists.

flying high in the classroomThe spring of 2015 saw the Owls improve their performance in their studieswhile preparing for spring football. The team achieved a new high in the teamGPA (2.91) for the semester. Senior center Kyle Friend earned the TempleOwl Club Academic Award for the highest GPA for the team during the 2014-15 academic year. Temple Football players have 38 different majors with 30student-athletes enrolled in the prestigious Fox Business School.

THE WISE OWLSTemple will have four student-athletes who have already completed their un-dergraduate degrees on the team this season. They are wide receiver JohnChristopher (kinesiology), defensive lineman Brandon Chudnoff (kinesiol-ogy), defensive back Will Hayes (criminal justice), and defensive linemanHershey Walton (advertising). Twenty-three other student-athletes expect tohave their degrees by December.

NIGHT OWLSFor a school founded on evening education and advancement, it seems ap-propriate that the Owls will play at least four games in primetime this season.Temple opened American play at Cincinnati with a win and defeated Char-lotte on a Friday night. It will face weeknight match-ups against East Carolinaand SMU. Times are up in the air for three more home games. Those high-profile games could add even more primetime exposure for Temple football.

CLASS aCTSThe Senior CLASS Award celebrates student-athletes who stay in school tocomplete their degrees and excel in the classroom and community. The Owlsnominated seven players for the 2015 award and two were among the 30candidates announced last week: Kyle Friend and Tyler Matakevich. The

two are the lone representatives of the American and the only teammatesto make the list.

the jahad squadOwls coach Matt Rhule vowed a return to Temple’s power running style ofprevious seasons. The junior running back from Elizabeth, NJ has answeredthe challenge. After setting a career high in rushes with 29 against PennState, Thomas carried 26 times for a career high 193 yards and a touchdownat Cincinnati. His 557 yards this season ranks third in the American AthleticConference and has already surpassed his 2014 output. He also leads theconference with over 182 all-purpose yards per game. He could join PaulPalmer as the only Owls to record 2,000 all-purpose yards in a season.

RHULER OF THE NESTTemple head coach Matt Rhule has been a tremendous factor in the recentsuccess of the Owls. While preseason polls projected the team to finish thirdin the American’s East Division, Rhule has his team atop the standings afteropening conference play with a 34-26 win at consensus favorite Cincinnati. This has earned Coach Rhule national media attention, as multiple organi-zations have lauded the job he’s done. After his first season at 2-10, he haswon 10 of the last 16 games. He also has a chance to win six in a row, notaccomplished since his former boss Al Golden ran off nine consecutive winsin 2009, the first bowl season for the Owls in 30 years.

FIGHTING THE POWERTemple won their second consecutive season opener against a Power Fivemember school. Here are the other Group of Five schools with wins in con-secutive seasons over Power Five schools:

A HISTORIC AFTERNOONSaturday, September 5th at Lincoln Financial Field saw Temple defeat theirinstate rival for the first time since 1941. It also saw the largest home crowdin Owls history. 69,176 journeyed to South Philadelphia for the Labor DayWeekend matchup, eclipsing the mark set by the Keystone State battle in2007. It was also the largest crowd of all 12 American home openers played.

MOVING ON UP TO THE EAST SIDETemple will start 2015 in the newly formed American Athletic ConferenceEast Division as the conference expands to 12 teams. Division rivals includeUCF, Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, and USF. Navy joins the Americanfor football and will contend in the West with Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tu-lane, and Tulsa. In the eight-game conference, each team will play threeteams out of division in a home-away series, allowing everyone to face offtwice every four years.

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!After splitting the conference title in the first two seasons, the American willcrown a winner December 5th at noon in the inaugural conference champi-onship game. #WETHET2015 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

TUDIAMONDS.COM OWLSPORTS.COM

QuarterbacksThis season Temple’s quarterbacks will be led by Glenn Thomas, the quar-terback coach who was hired after a seven year term with the Atlanta Fal-cons.

With 20 career starts entering the season, juniorP.J. Walker is the established starter for the Owls. Walkerearned the starting QB position midway through his freshmanseason and has not looked back. That season he threw for200+ yards and at least one touchdown in all seven starts andchallenged the all-time Temple passing marks with 2,084yards and 20 TDs. Walker brought the Owls to a 6-6 recordin 2014 but his personal stats suffered. He continues his as-sauklt on the Temple record books raning in the top three in every majorpassing category.

Following the loss of Connor Reilly to graduation, there werequestion marks on who would emerge as Walker’s backup. Frank Nutilewas part of the 2014 recruiting class and redshirted last seasonafter sufferinga torn ACL during the first week of camp. He earned the spot behind Walkerand was 3-3-40-1TD in his only extended action vs. Tulane.

Redshirt junior transfer John Loughery adds some collegiate ex-perience to the mix after playing for Elon College from 2013-14. The Wayne,Pa. native and William Penn Charter product played in 10 games and com-pleted 66 of 58 passes for 284 yards for the Phoenix. He is the cousin ofFalcons all-pro QB Matt Ryan who was tutored by Thomas in Atlanta.

Tim DiGiorgio was the only other quarterback with any game ex-perience fr teh Owls enteringb the season. The redshirt sophomore sawmop-up duty in two early 2014 wins at Vanderbilt and vs. Delaware State.

Logan Marchi was part of the 2015 recruiting class and enrolledat Temple this past January. He was able to participate in drills last summerand was impressive during that brief stint.

Wide ReceiversFrisman Jackson, a six-year NFL wide receiver and seven-year collegecoach, is currently his first season as Temple’s wide receivers coach.

Jackson inherited a talented groupthat is very raw. Gone is the leading receiverfrom a year ago. Jalen Fitzpatrick, who alsowas the team’s leading receiver in 2012,graduated.

However, the receiver corps got anadded jolt this summer when the Owls addedredshirt-senior Robby Anderson and soph-omore transfer Adonis Jennings. Anderson was Temple’s leading receiverin 2013 but was ineligible in 2014. After rejoining the team in September2013, Anderson eventually moved into the starting lineup and hauled in 34passes for 657 yards and 9 TDs in that season’s final five games. Jennings, who had 6 catches for 55 yards as a true freshman at Pitt last year, addsboth size and speed.

John Christopher returns as the experienced veteran of thegroup. The redshirt senior and three-time letterwinner entereed the seasonhaving played in 35 games as an Owl (tied for the most on the team). His20 starts entering the season were more than all the other wide receiverscombined.

Romond Deloatch, a redshirt junior, is a big receiver who hasthrived on the fade pattern in the end zone resulting in three touchdowns in2014.

After redshirting, Ventell Bryant was one of the most improvedplayers in the spring and earned a starting receiver role in the spring game.

Samuel Benjamin, a redshirt junior, has shuttled between re-ceiver and defensive back since injuring his shoulder making a catch in the2013 season opener. Last season he fought his way on to the field andblocked two punts that were both recovered for TDs.

Brandon Shippen started nine games a year ago after makingthe conversion from defensive back. He scored a 35-yard touchdown on hisfirst catch in the 2014 season opener.

Two players who saw increased action as the 2014 season pro-gressed were Keith Kirkwood and Brodrick Yancy. Kirkwood was a trans-fer from Hawaii who was granted a hardship waiver allowing him to play bythe fifth game of 2014. He suffered an injury early on and will most likelyredshirt this year. Yancy was part of the 2014 recruiting class. He made 6catches for 35 yards, all in the final four games of 2014.

Sophomores Tom Bradway and Marshall Ellick and redshirt

fresman Matt Eaton all add depth and contribute on special teams. One of the most gifted athletes on the team (fastest 40 time and

highest vertical jump), Derrek Thomas has been in and out of the lineup ashe develops as a receiver.

Redshirt junior Rob Heyen continues to develop. He saw his firstcollegiate action in a 59-0 victory over Delaware State.

The 2015 class brought Cortrelle Simpson (Lackey/Indian Head,Md.). Sophomore Willie Smith III (Eagles View Academy/Jacksonville, Fla.)transferred from Seton Hill. Corey Gaarn (Cloister, N.J./Bergen Catholic) isa freshman walk-on.

Tight Ends & FULLBACKSAssistant head coach Ed Foley will tutor the tight ends and fullbacks for thethird straight year. This season, he will also add special teamscoordinator to his duties.

For the first time, however, Foley will enter a sea-son returning some experience. In 2013, Foley was convert-ing former quarterback Chris Coyer into a tight end. After thesenior departed, Foley was left with few experienced players.

Colin Thompson, who transferred from Florida in2014 after two seasons sidelined with a foot injury, played innine games a year ago. He was slowly eased into the lineup after proper re-habilitation of his foot and learning the playbook. He has started every game.

Kip Patton was a 2014 recruit who spent the season redshirtingand working with the defensive line. This season he has been the unit’s mostpleasant surprise leading the group with 7 catches for 129 yards.

Redshirt senior Saledeem Major was used last season in multipletight end sets. Redshirt sophomore Cole Boozer saw limited action as hecontinues to develop and get stronger. Last season, quarterback ThomasRumer made the switch to tight end. He continues to develop. Walk onChris Myarick was impressive on the scout team and has earned playingtime on special teams.

The 2015 recruiting class introduces Patrick Anderson(Aliquippa/Aliquippa, Pa.), Roy Pugh (Shabazz/South Orange, N.J.) andJake Robinson (Haddonfield Memorial/Haddonfield, N.J.). Two newcomersare walkons Alex Carling (North Pocono High/Moscow, Pa.) and DomenicNigrelli (Valley Forge/Wayne, Pa).

Eric Neefe is the only returning fullback. He spent the past twoseasons on the scout team. He will be joined this year by senior MichaelFelton, redshirt-sophomore Nick Sharga, sophomore Rob Ritrovato andwalk-on freshman Daiqwon Buckley. Sharga is one of the toughest playerson the team and also plays defense. Felton is a three-year letterwinner whoplayed outside linebacker and has been a core special teams performer.Ritrovato was also a linebacker and played on special teams last season.Buckley (Dunmore, Pa. / Dunmore) is a bruising runner who enrolled at Tem-ple after spending last season at Salisbury.

Running BacksThis season the running backs will be guided by offensive coordinator Mar-cus Satterfield. Satterfield spent the past two seasons working with the quar-terbacks while coordinating the offense.

Gone from the stable of running backs is KennethHarper, the workhorse back over the past two seasons. Lastyear’s leading ground gainer, Jahad Thomas, however, re-turns. Thomas, who made the transition from defensive backto running back, was explosive averaging 7.9 yards per touchfrom scrimmage. He gained 384 yards on 80 carries andadded 364 yards on 14 receptions. This season he has been the Owls bestweapon leading the conference for most of the season after opening withback-to-back 100+-yard rushing days. He has scored at least one rushingTD in every game thus far.

A strong 2015 Temple recruiting class was highlighted by threerunning backs. Four-star RB T.J. Simmons (Lakeland Christian/Lakeland,Fla.) turned down an offer to UCLA to come to North Broad Street. He wasranked by Rivals.com as the #17 running back in the nation. Jager Gardner(Owen/Black Mountain, N.C.) holds the Western North Carolina record with6,955 career rushing yards. Ryquell Armstead (Millville/Millville, N.J.) re-minds Temple coaches of former Owl Bernard Pierce. He rushed for 1,488yards and 18 TDs as a senior. From the first day of camp, Armstead im-pressed and has seen the bulk of the carries behind Thomas.

David Hood was 8-62 rushing in a lopsided win over DelawareState in his only action as a freshman. Zaire Williams provided veterandepth.

Offensive LineWith Chris Wiesehan beginning his second season as offensive line coach, the Owls will have consistency in the O-line for the first time since 2012.That’s good news for senior Kyle Friend who had three different positioncoaches in his first three seasons. Wiesehan’s methods paid dividends forFriend who earned all-conference honors a year ago. One of the strongest(benches 225-lbs. 46 times) and quickest (4.95 / 40) linemen in the NCAA,the center leads all current Owls in consecutive games played (40) and con-secutive starts (38).

Junior Dion Dawkins mans the left tackle position protecting theQB’s blindside. He suffered an ankle injury last season in game 5 leadingthe Owls to a 4-1 start. While he missed just one game, he played on the in-jured ankle for most of the season.

Four players have shared the other three starting spots.Shahbaz Ahmed (four starts at LG) switched from the defensive

line in the spring and after adding 30 pounds, he started eight games at leftguard. An ankle injury held him out of three games late in the season. Afterlimited action in his first three years, Eric Lofton (two starts at RT, one atRG, one at LG) started every game of 2014 at right tackle.

Last season as a redshirt freshman, Brian Carter (four starts atRG) bounced between defensive and offensive line. In fact, he started at de-fensive tackle at UCF and started at right guard two weeks later vs. EastCarolina. One of the strongest players on the team, he earned a start at rightguard against Penn State. He is joined on the right side by redshirt sopho-more Leon Johnson (three starts at RT), who stepped up during trainingcamp to earn the starting nod.

The Owls are hoping to have similar results with redshirt juniorJulio Derosier and junior Kiser Terry. After spending the 2014 season onthe defensive line, both were switched to offensive line this spring.

Brendan McGowan started the first eight games of 2014 at rightguard and moved to the left side after Ahmed was sidelined. He is the pri-mary backup at center.

Developing talent and depth on the offensive line has been a mis-sion of Matt Rhule’s since taking the head coaching position two years ago.His 2013 recruiting class which includes Semaj Reed and Adrian Sullivancontinue to develop and each saw spot action last year. The 2014 class ofJames McHale, Jaelin Robinson and Aaron Ruff all redshirted a year ago. Each has benefited from an additional year in the weight room and are readyto challenge for playing time. The 2015 class of Jovahn Fair and BensonIsrael have the talent to play right away but their work in summer camp willdictate how quickly they see game action.

The Philadelphia area produced two walk-ons in 2014 for Temple- Nick Apostolu (Springfield/Springfield, Pa.), and Gordon Thomas(Imhotep) - and both have continued to grow and develop. Joseph Woerner(Wycoff, N.J./Bergen Catholic) is a freshman walk-on.

Defensive LineElijah Robinson, one of the brightest young coaches in the country, returnsfor his second season to lead the Owls’ defensive line.

The unit is deep especially on theinside. Seniors Matt Ioannidis and HersheyWalton lead the way and are once againamong the best in the conference. Ioannidisled the team last season with 11.0 tackles forloss and had a career-high and D-line leading47 tackles. Walton has started 20 games inthe past three seasons and has never misseda game.

Averee Robinson was part of last year’s rotation and helped setthe tone for the season with two fumble recoveries in the season opener, in-cluding one he returned 55-yards for a touchdown. He has switched his num-ber to 43 this season to honor his deceased brother Adrian who was a starat Temple from 2009-11 and played in the NFL for three seasons.

Adding to the mix this season will be Freddie Booth-Lloyd andMichael Dogbe, who joined Temple in 2014 and redshirted.

Praise Martin-Oguike returned to the team after a two year ab-sence and became a dominant force. He accumulated all 7.5 of his sacks in

the final nine games and earned numerous player of the week honors aftera 1.5 sack, 3.5 TFL, 3 forced fumble performance when Temple knocked off#21/19 East Carolina.

Moving back to defensive end isredshirt-senior Nate D. Smith who hasmanned the middle for most of the past threeseasons. Smith has averaged over 70 tacklesbut has had a knack for the big play with sixforced fumbles, three recoveries, one inter-ceptions and 6.5 sacks. He has alreadynotched 5.5 sacks in the first five games of 2015.

Redshirt junior Haason Reddick siezed the moment while Mar-tin-Oguike was battled a preseason injury and has made the most earningthe start in the season’s first five games. A walkon defensive back in 2012,Reddick has added considerable weight to his frame without losing his quick-ness.

Another player making his share of big plays was Sharif Finch. In the season’s first three games, he had one sack, 3.5 TFLs, one forcedfumble that he recovered for a touchdown and an interception that he re-turned 65-yards for another score.

Brandon Chudnoff, Avery Ellis, and Jacob Martin all saw ac-tion throughout most of the season in the rotation at end.

Julian Taylor saw limited repetitions in 2014 and continues to de-velop.

Redshirt-sophomore Jordan Jones sat out last year after trans-ferring from East Stroudsberg. He was converted from offensive line to de-fensive line this spring.

The 2015 recruiting class adds Josiah Bronson (Kentwood/Cov-ington, Wash.), DeAndre Kelly (DeMatha/Hyattsville, Md.), and DanaLevine (Hallandale/Hallandale, Fla.). Jeromy Reichner (West PhiladelphiaCatholic/Philadelphia, Pa) is a walk-on freshman.

LinebackersMike Siravo is now in his third straight year and his second term with Temple.Besides leading the linebackers, Siravo has been responsible for recruitingfor the past two seasons for which Temple has received high marks.

For the first time inrecent history, Temple entersthe season with a legitimateAll-America defensive candi-date. WLB Tyler Matakevichhas led the Owls in tackles ineach of his three seasons, eclipsing the 100-tackleplateau each year. As such, he joins Steve Conjar and Joe Klecko as theonly Temple players to reach that mark three times. In fact, Matakevich’s355 career tackles entering the season was the most of any current NCAAplayer and was the only one with more than 300 to his credit.

The linebacking corp returns three other players who have startedat some point in the last two seasons.

One of the leaders on the team is Avery Williams. After movingfrom running back to defensive back, he finally found a home at linebackerand emerged as the starting SLB last year.

The most versatile player in the group is Stephaun Marshall. After making the conversion from safety, Marshall became the primarybackup at all three linebacker positions and made five starts (3 at SLB and2 at WLB).

Jarred Alwan is a tough, intelligent player who has earned thechance to start at MLB in 2015.

Nick Sharga, a transfer from West Virginia-Wesleyan, redshirtedlast year and has seen action at linebacker and defensive line. Jared Folksand Zack Mesday both redshirted and will benefit from a year of develop-ment.

The 2015 recruiting class was strong on linebackers as the Owlsadded Chapelle Russell (Lakewood/Lakewood, N.J.), Daishaun Grimes(Harmony/St. Cloud, Fla.), and William Updegrove (Berwick Area/Berwick,Pa.)

Joining the squad as walkons in 2015 are: Mike DiFrancesco(Neumann-Goretti/Philadelphia, Pa), and Todd Jones (St. Joe’sPrep/Philadelphia). Jones has risen up the depth chart and has earned playon special teams.

centrates on the safeties and Brown on thecorners.

Three-year letterwinner TavonYoung is the most experienced and also hasproven to be the biggest playmaker. In thepast three seasons, he has accounted forseven of Temple’s 16 interceptions. In 2014,he had four picks, returned one for a 93-yard TD, and added a fumble returnfor a 63-yard score.

Sean Chandler made people take notice from the time he walkedon campus. As a true freshman, he earned the starting corner spot and wasvoted by his teammates to wear a single-digit jersey (give to the toughestmembers of the team). He didn’t allow a single touchdown until the 11thgame of the season and was a major reason why the team shaved 100-yards off its average of passing yards allowed per game from the previousyear.

Redshirt junior Nate Hairston, who has played at wide receiver, has made the switch to defensive back. Redshirt sophomores Artrel Fosterand Cequan Jefferson add depth.

Anthony Davis and Khiry Lucas had a chance to see action atcorner last season. Both suffered injuries and were limited in the spring. Join-ing them at cornerback is 2015 recruit Kareem Ali,a four-star selection outof Timber Creek High (Sicklerville, N.J.), andwalk-ons Jarrid Satterfield (Willingboro,N.J.) and Eriq Fadahundsi (Indian Head,Md./Lackey).

At safety two starters return, eachof whom started more than half the gameslast season. Alex Wells, a JUCO transfer,

started the season at free safety but missed three games due to injury. Hewas the team’s fourth leading tackler with 51 stops. Will Hayes (7 starts; 45tackles) was not opening day starter but played well at FS and SS whencalled upon.

Boye Aromire earned the opening day start at SS but an injuredback limited his repetitions throughout the season.

Those early injuries opened the door for Nate L. Smith whoshowed considerable improvement during camp. An ankle injury of his ownin the season opener limited his action.

Jyquis Thomas, a 2014 recruit, redshirted last season but earnedthe most improved defensive player award in the spring.

Added to the mix are 2015 recruit Jeremiah Atoki (VinelandSouth/Vineland, N.J.), 2014 recruit Delvon Randall (Gateway/Monroeville,Pa.) who spent last fall at East Coast Academy.

SpecialistsAfter a disastrous 2013 season, the kicking game madestrides in 2014 thanks in part to three true freshmen walk-ons. Austin Jones led the team with 69 points. He was per-fect on 30 PATs and was 13-22 on field goals. He has beennearly perfect this season. Alex Starzyk showcased a pow-erful punting leg with a 38.4-yard average. Although incon-sistent, his best game came in a victory over #21/19 EastCarolina when he nailed five of nine punts inside the 20 in arain-soaked field position battle. Both kickers benefited fromlong snapper Corey Lerch who won an open battle amongfive long snappers - Josh Lang will serve as the backup.

Jahad Thomas will handle kickoff returns backedby Ryquell Armstead and Robby Anderson. Anderson andSean Chandler are the leading punt returners.

#WETHET2015 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

TUDIAMONDS.COM OWLSPORTS.COM

On December 17, 2012, Matt Rhule (pronounced RULE)returned to North Broad Street to take the helm as head coachof the Temple Owls. Following six seasons as one of AlGolden’s top assistants, he joined the New York Giants as theassistant offensive line coach in 2012. He is now in his thirdyear as the 26th Owls head coach and 9th on the Temple cam-pus.

Prior to the start of his first season in charge he offeredthat his squad would produce an exciting brand of football andthey would improve as the season progressed. Rhule deliveredon those promises as the 2013 Owls produced nearly 400yards per game of offense (the second best total in school his-tory). Despite an 0-6 start to the season, the troops never sur-rendered and the team never trailed at the start of the fourthquarter in the second half of the season. The mission in the2014 offseason was to learn how to finish out games.

They did just that, allowing only 23 fourth quarterpoints in all of 2014. That adjustment, and the overall im-proved play of the defense, helped the Owls to a 6-6 record.

On June 25, 2015, Rhule was rewarded with a four-yearcontract extension that will keep him on the Temple sidelinesthrough the 2021 season. Temple’s Director of Athletics Dr.Patrick Kraft announced, “Matt Rhule is one of the best youngcoaches in college football and we are excited that he will beat the helm of Temple Football through at least 2021. Matt hasthe program heading in the right direction, especially as weenter a very promising season on the gridiron, and we are con-fident that he is the right person to take the program to evengreater heights."

The State College, PA, native, a former player at PennState, has 17 years of collegiate coaching experience, includingeight seasons at Temple, and six bowl games -- two with theOwls -- on his resume.

Rhule joined the Giants in the spring of 2012. Heworked closely with Pat Flaherty, who has been the offensiveline coach since 2004. They finished the 2012 campaign at 9-7, second in the NFC East, and averaged 355 yards of offenseper game. Four New York players, including guard Chris Snee, were selected to the Pro Bowl.

During his previous tenure at Temple, Rhule’s rolechanged several times. In spring 2011, he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator after serving as the assistant offensivecoordinator and tight ends coach as well as the recruiting co-ordinator under Steve Addazio in 2011. Temple’s 2012 recruit-ing class was ranked #1 in the Mid-American Conference andhelped lay the foundation for the program's transition to theBig East Conference.

Under Al Golden, Rhule was promoted to offensive co-ordinator in the spring of 2008. He also coached the TU quar-terbacks. He coached the defensive line in 2006 and served asthe quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator during the2006 and 2007 seasons. For three consecutive years, Temple’srecruiting class was ranked #1 in the MAC [2006, 2007, 2008].

In 2011, the Owls went 9-4 and played in the fourthbowl game in school history, the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, where they crushed Wyoming, 37-15 – Temple’s first postsea-son victory since the 1979 Garden State Bowl. Rhule men-tored two-time first-team All-MAC selection TE EvanRodriguez. For the second time in Rhule’s tenure, the Owls setthe Temple single-season rushing yardage record and rushingtouchdowns records behind the explosive efforts of All-MACjunior running backs Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown.

In 2010, Rhule helped guide the team to an 8-4 regular-season record, and the Owls recorded back-to-back winningseasons for the first time since 1978-79, including their firstwin over a BCS team. The Owls recorded the largest margin ofvictory (42 points against Buffalo) in a MAC game. A schoolrecord six offensive players earned All-MAC honors, includingrepeat first-team honorees OL Colin Madison, OL Darius Mor-ris, and RB Bernard Pierce as well as first-time honoree TE EvanRodriguez.

In 2009, Rhule’s offense helped TU win a single-seasonrecord nine consecutive games en route to a 9-4 overall recordand first-place tie in the MAC East. Under Rhule’s guidance, the Owls set the Temple single-season rushing yardage record.A school record five offensive players were named All-MAC,

including three on the first team. All-American Bernard Piercerushed his way into the Temple record book, re-writing allrecords for a rookie en route to 2009 MAC Freshman of theYear honors.

In 2008, Rhule took the reins as offensive coordinator, helping the Owls to their most wins in nearly two decades. The Owls outscored their opponents for the season for thefirst time since 1990. Rhule coached All-MAC honorees C AlexDerenthal and school record holder WR Bruce Francis, whileQB Adam DiMichele set the school record for passing touch-downs with six in the 55-52 win over Eastern Michigan. Francisset the school records for career receiving TDs (23) and con-secutive games with a reception (38).

Rhule arrived in Owl Country after spending four sea-sons as an assistant coach at Western Carolina, including threeas assistant head coach.

From 2002 to 2005, Rhule was an assistant at WesternCarolina under head coach Kent Briggs, serving as assistanthead coach during his last three seasons. In 2005, he was of-fensive line coach and run game coordinator after directingthe linebackers his first three years. Rhule was special teamscoordinator during his tenure in Cullowhee (NC). In 2005, theCatamounts led Division I-AA in kickoff returns, averaging27.44 yards per return. Sophomore Mike Malone earned firstteam All-Southern Conference honors with a 31.29 yards perkickoff return average, ranking second nationally. Two offen-sive linemen and the team’s punter captured second team all-league accolades.

In 2004, WCU ranked 12th nationally in total defenseand 15th in pass defense, largely due to the production ofRhule’s linebacker corps. The team’s top five tacklers werelinebackers in its eight man front scheme. In 2003, the Cata-mounts led the SoCon in rush defense for the first time inschool history.

Rhule arrived at Western Carolina after serving as assis-tant defensive line coach at UCLA in 2001. He assisted incoaching five Bruins that earned All PAC-10 honors as the teamposted a 7-4 record under head coach Bob Toledo.

From 1999 to 2000, Rhule served as an assistant coachat Mid-American Conference member Buffalo, directing theBulls defensive line in 2000 and working as assistant defensiveline coach in 1999. In 2000, the team’s sack total increasedfrom 12 to 27 utilizing a 3-4 alignment. Buffalo also earned itsfirst two Division I-A victories that season.

Rhule began his coaching career as a volunteer assistantat Penn State in the spring of 1998 before working at AlbrightCollege in Reading, PA for the 1998 season. At Albright, hecoached the linebackers in a 4-3 scheme and recruited west-ern and central Pennsylvania.

Rhule played four seasons at linebacker with the NittanyLions under Joe Paterno. A three-time Penn State Scholar-Ath-lete, he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 1997. He re-ceived his undergraduate degree in political science beforeearning his master’s degree in educational psychology fromBuffalo in 2003.

Temple 27, Penn State 10September 5, 2015

Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pa.1

PHILADELPHIA - JahadThomas rushed for 135yards and two touchdownsand P.J. Walker completed15-of-20 passes for 143yards and added a rushingtouchdown to lead Temple toa 27-10 win over visitingPenn State Saturday after-noon in front of a homerecord crowd of 69,176 atLincoln Financial Field.

The win was the first for theOwls (1-0) over the NittanyLions (0-1) since the 1941season.

After allowing 10 points onPenn State's first two pos-sessions, the Cherry andWhite defense took control, holding the Nittany Lionsscoreless the rest of the way.

Senior LB Tyler Matakevich, who entered the game witha nation's best 355 tackles, recorded a team-high seventackles, including a career-best three sacks. In all, theOwls defense sacked Penn State QB Christian Hacken-berg 10 times and limited the signal caller to 11-25 pass-ing for 103 yards. Junior DL Sharif Finch interceptedHackenberg to set up Temple's go-ahead third quartertouchdown.

After the game, Temple head coach Matt Rhule said,"The reason I believe we won is because we focused onourselves and the players bought into that and only wor-ried about the next play. After the game I said we won,it's not about Penn State it is about us. For our guys todo that and focus on themselves shows great maturity."

Penn State jumped out early, scoring on its first twodrives. The Nittany Lions got a 33-yard run from BrandonPolk on their first snap, but the Owls defense clampeddown in the red zone, forcing a 34-yard field goal fromJoey Julius. Following a second consecutive punt, PennState took the ball 75 yards in six plays, capped off by a42 yard touchdown run by Akeel Lynch to make the lead10-0.

The Owls defense then came to life, and kept the PSUoffense in check the remainder of the game. After the twoscoring drives, Temple forced four straight PSU three-and-outs as the defense began to dominate the line ofscrimmage.

Following a punt to the Temple seven, the Owls offensefound some rhythm. Walker and Thomas each took offfor first down runs. Walker then found redshirt freshmanWR Ventell Bryant for 25 yards on third down and 16.Thomas broke off runs of 12 and 31 yards to give theOwls first-and-goal at the Penn State 2.

Two runs into the line produced just one yard so headcoach Matt Rhule dialed up some trickery. With freshmanRB Ryquell Armstead in front of Thomas, Walker fakedthe belly run before tossing a wide pitch to Thomas, whorecorded his first rushing TD as an Owl. The 12-play, 93-yard drive was the longest scoring drive for the Owlssince the 99-yard march at Lincoln Financial Field lastseason in the 35-24 win over Tulsa on October 11.

The Owls tied the game ontheir second drive on thesecond half. Walker hit red-shirt freshman TE Kip Pattonfor a 20-yard catch and run, followed by a wide receiverthrowback from redshirt sen-ior WR John Christopher toWalker for 25 yards. Thedrive stalled out at the PSU23, but Austin Jones con-verted his first attempt of theyear from 40 yards out tomake it 10-10 with 6:23 re-maining in the third quarter.

Finch then intercepted Hack-enberg and galloped 26yards to the Penn State 2.Walker then ran it in fromone-yard out to give Templea 17-10 lead.

Following another Templedefensive stop capped by aNate D Smith sack to openthe fourth quarter, Walkerdrove the Owls 49 yards infive plays with Jahad

Thomas' 24-yard TD, a lane-changing scamper cappingthe drive. Following another defensive stand, Jonesadded a 30-yard insurance field goal to extend the leadto 27-10.

Walker was stellar behind center Kyle Friend, connectingwith eight different receivers on the day. Redshirt seniorWR Robby Anderson led the way with five catches whileBryant had two catches for a team-high 41 receivingyards.

It was a total team effort on defense. Besides Matake-vich, Tavon Young added six tackles while Nate D. Smithhad five tackles and two sacks. Five other Owls, JarredAlwan, Matt Ioannidis, Haason Reddick, Stephaun Mar-shall and Jacob Martin, all registered sacks in the con-test.

After the game, Thomas discussed the thrill of victory: "Itfelt great to see the excitement of the fans and players.Temple has been in a drought for the last few years andfor us to come out and do this for the fans and forPhiladelphia, it felt great."

Temple took the lead in thefirst quarter following aBearcat fumble that gave theOwls the ball on the Cincin-nati 45. Initially the Bearcatswere ruled to have recov-ered the ball, but Templehead coach Matt Rhule chal-lenged the call and it wasdetermined that senior safety Will Hayes had recovered. The Owls marched 23 yards in five plays with AustinJones opening scoring with a 40-yard field goal.

The Bearcats put together two prolonged drives, but set-tled for two Andrew Gantz field goals to take a 6-3 leadin the second quarter. The Owls responded with a drivebefore the half. Thomas broke off consecutive runs of 12and 18 yards to get the ball into the red zone. After adelay of game penalty, junior quarterback P.J. Walker hitThomas, his high school teammate, for 22 yards downthe far sideline for a first-and-goal at the 2. After Thomasplunged for a yard, Walker looked right and hit senior full-back Michael Felton in the end zone for a one-yard strike, his first career catch, silencing the white-clad studentsection in the end zone.

Thomas was just getting started. He took the second-halfkickoff 100 yards to the house, tying a program record, and stretching the lead to 17-6 before fans could returnwith their halftime concessions. The Bearcats respondedwith an 88-yard bomb from Kiel to Mekale McKay to cutthe lead. Senior cornerback Tavon Young broke up thetwo-point conversion try to keep the edge at 17-12. The Owls turned that into Walker's secondTD throw as he found Robby Anderson in the back cor-ner of the end zone from 13 yards out to make it 31-12.An Alex Wells interception on the following Bearcat pos-session set up a nine-play, 25-yard drive that ate up 5:09and led to Jones' second field goal of the evening, as heconverted from 35 yards.

The Bearcats responded with a drive that ended with aTion Green direct snap from six-yards out to cut the leadto 31-19. Another late drive was thwarted by a secondWells interception and 57-yard return. Kiel led anothertouchdown drive with a two-yard pass to Shaq Washing-ton that made it 34-26. However, Matakevich recoveredthe onside kick attempt at the Bearcats' 45. The game

FOXBORO - Junior quarter-back P.J. Walker set a ca-reer-high with 391 yardspassing and led a last-minute drive that set upsophomore kicker AustinJones' 32-yard game-win-ning field goal to lift Templeto a 25-23 win over Massa-chusetts Saturday afternoonat Gillette Stadium. TheOwls move to 3-0 on theseason for the first timesince 2010.

On the finaldrive, he hit four key comple-tions, including a 12-yardpass to senior wide receiverJohn Christopher with 12seconds left at the UMass15 yard line to set up Jones'game-winning kick.

After the Minutemen took a 23-20 with 1:20 to go, red-shirt-junior Praise Martin-Oquike blocked the point-afterattempt and junior LB Stephau n Marshall recovered be-fore flipping to senior DB Will Hayes took the lateral andreturned the ball for a defensive PAT to close the gap to23-22.

The Owls defense, for the second week in a row, madea play when the team needed it. They created twoturnovers in the game, including a late interception byMarshall. The defense also held the Minutemen to 45yards rushing on the afternoon and kept pressure onsenior quarterback Blake Frohnapfel. Senior linebackerTyler Matakevich registered nine tackles to lead the waywhile Nate D Smith recorded an 11-yard sack to stifle aMinutemen drive in the second half. The team won thetime of possession battle in every quarter and finishedthe game with 35:09 of ball control.

the Minutemen the ball backvia a fumble just two playslater.

Frohnapfel then led his teamon an eight-play, 59 yarddrive, hitting Wilson on a 16-yard go-ahead touchdownwith 1:20 on the clock tomake it 23-20. Martin-Ogu-ike then made the play of theday, blocking the extra pointwith Marshall and Hayes tak-ing it all the way back for atwo-point play to make it 23-22.

Walker then led the Owls ona 10-play drive over the finalminute and change to set upJones' winning kick from theleft hash. The Temple QBcompleted six of nine passeson the winning drive withJones making his seventhfield goal on the season inseven attempts.

The defense was impressiveall night and held the hostsscoreless in the second half.Junior DL Sharif Finchblocked a punt and Nate L.Smith returned it 16 yardsfor a score.

The rain led to some sloppyconditions in the first half.Walker was plagued by re-ceiver drops, but passedAdam DiMichele for fourth place all-time in passing yardswith his first completion to Brodrick Yancy. Temple's firstlong drive led to a 36-yard field goal attempt by AustinJones. The Owls reliable kicker then missed his first at-tempt of the season. However, the Owls defense forceda long field goal by 49ers kicker Blake Brewer, but hemissed from 55. Temple took the ball and broke the stale-mate in the second quarter as Jones connected from 39yards away. Charlotte drove into the red zone butBrewer's 26-yard attempt missed.

After an exchange of punts, the Owls got down to busi-ness. The defense forced a secondthree-and-out and another short punt gave the Owlsgood field position. This time Walker moved the team 39yards and found Anderson from 11 yards out to make ita 24-3 lead. The defense stood tall again and Finch thenmade his huge play, blocking Arthur Hart's punt. Smithcorralled and ran it in for a touchdown, the first blockedpunt return to paydirt since Samuel Benjamin's at UCFlast season. However, Jones' extra point was blocked, marking the first miss of his career.

Coach Rhule was very pleased with the performance butwas more excited to get so many players into the game.""I'm very pleased to get a win at homecoming and im-prove to 5-0. I'm proud of our team and I though theyshowed resiliency and made plays when they had to inall three areas; offense, defense and special teams. Thatwas a great win for us in that every kid that could get intothe game that was not injured or redshirted.
