I love it when the High Holydays fall in October! It means that Elul, the month of preparation leading up to Rosh Hashanah, falls in September. And that means that we have an opportunity to help you get ready for the Holydays.

I’ve said many times that it’s difficult to get much out of the prayers at Temple if you haven’t done any personal preparation. It’s like trying to

run a marathon without any training. You might make it, but it’s not going to be pleasant. Services should not feel like a misery to be endured. They should be meaningful, powerful, and sometimes even life-changing. It’s the Clergy’s job to run the services, and it’s your job to arrive ready to take advantage of what we’re offering.

To help you with that, we are holding three Elul experiences, each focusing on a different aspect of the Days of Awe.

Do it now! Don’t put it off! You owe it to yourself to make 5777 your best High Holyday experience yet. And for those who, like me, tend to procrastinate, here’s a story from our folklore:

One day Satan, known as an “accuser” in Jewish tradition, gathered his assistants together to talk about the most effective method of destroying the meaning of people’s lives. One minor accuser said, “Tell them there is no God.” Another suggested, “Tell them there is no judgment for sin and they need not worry.” A third proposed, “Tell them their sins are so great they will never be forgiven.” “No,” Satan replied, “none of these things will matter to them. I think we should simply tell them, ‘There is plenty of time.’”

There is plenty of time… Maybe yes, maybe no. But regardless of the unknown reality, the High Holydays call upon us to behave as though there is not plenty of time. I urge you to consider this full month of September before Rosh Hashanah a gift, an extra month in which to prepare. Notes from Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg

Shalom!#whatcantorsdo is a popular hashtag among my colleagues. As I think about what the year ahead will bring I wonder what

my #whatcantorsdo experiences might be. I look forward to all of the simchas and to being there to support those in sorrows, I look forward to teaching “children” of all ages, I look forward to being out in the community representing TBA, and I look forward to creating a cohesive music curriculum for TBA. As I said at the Congregational Meeting in June my goal for the year is to take a look at TBA’s musical curriculum and analyze what our musical history has been, what the music at TBA says about us today, and what our musical future might look like.

When cantors are not sure who composed a particular piece of music they attribute it to “trad”. “Trad” as you can imagine stands for traditional but what exactly does that mean? In my thoughts at the Congregational Meeting I shared that traditional is what someone grew up with, it’s the setting of a particular prayer that you are most familiar with. You probably have no idea who composed it but it is what makes the service familiar, meaningful, and prayerful for YOU. For some, “trad” means the one we always do and should never stop doing!

Another version of “trad” is “misinai”. “Misinai” is often explained as being so old, so engrained in our lexicon that it might as well have been handed down to us by God at Mount Sinai. For me this is nusach and trope. These are the melodies that sound Jewish, that I hear and instantly know that it’s Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, or Shabbat. These are the melodies that anchor me, the melodies that prepare me for what is about to happen. These are the melodies that help me feel connected to my community past and present, and to God.

TBA’s musical tradition is rich in both “trad” and “misinai”. It includes what we sing in both of our sanctuaries, our nursery school, and our religious school. TBA’s musical tradition includes the nusach of our Conservative services, the Classical Reform tradition of choral music and the congregation listening more than participating, American nusach which is a description of the folk tunes that came out of the Reform movement summer camps, and those that are being written every day. Join me on this journey to take a look at where we have come from musically and where we might be going. Share with me your “trad” setting of a particular part of our liturgy. Share with me what Jewish music is on your iPod. I really do want to hear what you have to say. Better yet I want to hear you sing!

On the 2nd Friday of the month prior to the beginning of services I will be singing in the Reform Sanctuary from 7:00-7:20pm (services will begin at 7:30pm). Some months it will be a new tune that I want to teach, some months it will be an introduction to the nusach of the holiday that is coming, and some months it will just be a chance to sing some oldies but goodies. Join me on September 9 as we begin this journey together.

L’shalom,

Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg

From the Director of Education 4Religious School News-Rabbi Allison Berlinger

Welcome Back!!!!! I hope everyone had a relaxing and restful summer. I am hoping that this year will be as exciting as ever in the Religious School. Each summer the Religious School staff, faculty, and Board of Education work on a variety of changes meant to enhance and improve our current program.

Each year Judaism invites each of us to examine our lives and improve our current selves. We all have something to work on. We all have something we can do better. We also all have things which we are really good at. We have our gifts and our blessings.

So like the Religious School which has its many gifts and blessings, our talented teachers, awesome madrichim (teen aides), super students, great parents, tremen-dous and giving volunteers also has its areas for improvements. Our major focus for improvement has been revamping and improving our Hebrew High program.

Our post B’nei Mitzvah students are extremely important to us. We believe that they deserve a program that is academically interesting, challenging, and social. We hope that our 8th-12th grade students will partner with us in this journey of innovation and help us as we embark on this exciting new adventure together.

Each month La Asociacion selects a family that is going through a particularly difficult time. Two TBA families volunteer to purchase a suggested list of supplies. The

supplies are delivered to Jennefer Schifman’s home which is near TBA. She delivers the supplies to the family in need.

Cost? The cost seems to average around $50.00 per family.

The Meaning of Yom Kippur

“Yom Kippur is linked with the practice of self-denial. By tradition, we fulfill this in part by fasting. When we consciously experience hunger through fasting, we are more likely to consider the millions who need no Yom Kippur in order to suffer hunger.” - Rabbi Chaim Stern

For the past 25 years, many Westchester congregations have deepened the significance of their Yom Kippur fast by donating to the Food Bank for Westchester. Last year’s Yom Kippur Appeal raised $28,000 and over 13,000 pounds of food to help feed the hungry of Westchester. Once again, the Westchester Jewish Council is collaborating with the Food Bank to raise awareness about hunger in Westchester County.

Hunger continues to be a serious issue in our community. According to the most recent study conducted by Feeding America, there is a gap of nearly 16 million meals for Westchester County. Even though the Food Bank distributed 6.3 million meals last year, it wasn’t enough. We need your help to fill the gap and provide food for hungry people in your community. The Food Bank is the backbone of supply and support for 300 frontline hunger-relief programs throughout Westchester – food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. Each $1 donated helps us acquire $4 worth of food.

Please use the donation envelope, or donate on our secure website at www.foodbankforwestchester.org/yom-kippur-2016 (be sure to enter your synagogue’s name where prompted when making your donation).

For information about how to organize a food drive, contact our Community Events Coordinator – [email protected]

Thank you so much for your generosity and support! The Food Bank for Westchester Board, Staff & Volunteers wish you and your family all

good things in the New Year 5777. Shanah Tovah!

Adult Learning at Temple Beth AbrahamAdult Education has always been a priority at Temple Beth Abraham. Over the years, we have designed classes and programs to expand our knowledge of Jewish culture, history, and religion, and to deepen our connections to each other through shared learning and discussion.

Our Temple has many thriving programs that will continue in the coming year. Every week, you can join us for Torah Study with the Rabbi on Wednesday morning or during Conservative Shabbat Services and Maj Jongg with Sheila Buitekant on Monday afternoon. One Friday a month, before Shabbat Services, Kimberly Marcus will be hosting a speaker and discussion at Women’s Circle, and on one Saturday night each month, Marla Peers and her Committee will be bringing us an Israeli or Jewish film in the Movie Mavens program. Interested in literature? One Friday morning every two months, Linda Gerstman leads us in a lively discussion at the Book Club.

This September, we are pleased to be working with the Ritual Committee to bring you a special Elul Program, taught by Rabbi David and Cantor Margot, in preparation for the High Holydays. And, we are delighted to announce that we are bringing back Sunday Brunch! We are teaming up with the Israel Committee for our first event, when George Keteku, Ph.D. explores with us the fascinating rela-tionship between Israel and Africa.

Looking forward, we will be working with the Rabbi to bring you a Scholar-in-Residence Program, which typically provides two weekends of activities each year. And, we are working with Hannah Gross at WCC to bring us a four-lecture program for people over 60 on Jewish Art and Architecture.

But, we need your help!

We have lots of ideas for lectures, programs, classes and events. But, in order for us to provide activities that are interesting and meaningful to you, we need to know what you think. So, with

the help of Sharon DeLevie, we have created a Short Survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZWXVKDS (Yes, I am glad to participate in the survey) or ask the office for a paper copy. The survey is completely anony-mous, so please take a few minutes to share your interests and to let us know if you, or someone you know has a great lecture or activity to offer.

I am very honored to be serving as your Adult Education chair for 2016-2017, and look forward to working with our Temple leaders to bring you an exciting and fulfilling year of learning, sharing, and community.

Book Club: Friday, September 23, at 10:00am The Best Place On Earth by Ayelet Tsabari. “Ayelet Tsabari’s first collection of short stories shows what it’s like to be both Jewish and Arab in Israel. Chances are you live in an iffy neighborhood and European Jews look down on you. Bombings, military service, and Scud missiles intrude. You’ll find family melodrama and a tangy whiff of chick lit mixed in with scenes that could come straight from “M”A”S”H”. Should I get it on with this cute paratrooper? How can my daughter refuse to circumcise my grandson? Why did my husband sleep with “some Rona from Haifa a couple of years ago?” If all this seems lacking in the gravitas implied by the heritage of its author, who was born in Israel to a family of Yemeni descent and served in the Israeli Army, just try picking up this book without having your preconceived notions prodded into a mess of noisy contradictions. And it’s all done so lightly. The Best Place On Earth wears its identity politics like a macrame ‘bikini.’” —The New York Times Book Review RSVP (914) 631-1770, [email protected]. $2.00 suggested donation per guest.

Watch for details on a new program this fall sponsored by the Westchester Community College Mainstream Program. Speaker Bruce J. Levy, AIA, Adjunct Professor WCC will present four lectures on “The Reflection of Jewish Culture in Art and Architecture.” Time and date to be announced.

The Holydays are Coming: Are You Prepared?

We’ve got several opportunities for you to get spiritually ready for the High Holydays.

Wednesday, September 14, 7:30-9:00pm: High Holydays Survival Guide - They’re long.

They can be boring. And the prayerbook doesn’t help. Rabbi Holtz will give you practical tips

to making services work for you, including some of the things you thought you weren’t supposed

to do during services! This is meant for everyone, including those (especially those!) who

struggle with the words of the prayerbook.

Tuesday, September 20, 7:30-9:00pm: Music of the Holydays – Join Cantor Goldberg for an

introduction to the music itself, and also how the music is meant to help us find meaning. High

Holyday CD included!

Tuesday, September 27, 7:30-9:00pm: Forgiveness-Why You Need It, How to Get It and

How to Give It – This is, of course, the main point of the Holydays. And it’s the one most of us

struggle with the most. We’re going to explore many ideas about forgiveness, and you’ll have a

chance to begin to create a personal plan of action for the Holydays.

And don’t forget Selichot Program and Service, Saturday, September 24.

Movie and discussion at 7:00pm “The Power of Forgiveness”

Refreshments at 9:00pm

Havdalah and selichot service, 9:30-10:15pm

Finally, keep your eyes open for our Selichot board in the Temple Lobby. It’s an opportunity to

anonymously ask forgiveness for our sins, while encouraging others to do so as well. Some of

them (anonymously!) will become part of the Yom Kippur service.

Chil d or Grandchil d in College ? Join our “A way@School” Program

The Away@School program is our way of reminding our students that though they are out of

sight, they are still in our thoughts and an important part of our congregational family. By

joining Away@School your student(s) will receive fun packages, cards for the Jewish holidays,

and messages during the year from Cantor Goldberg, Rabbi Holtz, Rabbi Allison, and the

Away@School Committee.

It is easy to enroll. Sign your student up for A@S on-line by visiting the TBA website at tba-ny.org.

Under “Connect”, click on the Away@School link and fill out the information. Or you may fill out

the form below and send it to the TBA office with your check for $36.00/per student, payable to

TBA with “Away@School” in the memo; to pay by credit card, call the TBA Office. Be sure to sign

up soon so your child receives the first package in celebration of Rosh Hashanah.

If you enrolled your child last year, this is a gentle reminder that you must enroll in the

Away@School program each new school year. So please re-enroll them now to continue to

receive fun packages from their TBA family!

For more information about the program or to volunteer on the committee, please contact the

A@S Committee ([email protected]).

The Away@School Committee is always in need of volunteers to assist with shopping, assembly

and the mailing of the packages. Please let us know which holiday(s) you are able to help out:

□ Rosh Hashanah □ Chanukah □ Purim □ Passover
