ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS

CARDOZA’S LEADERSHIPIn her eighth season at the helm of Temple women’s basket-ball is Tonya Cardoza. In five seasons, she’s led the Owls tofive post-season berths, including three NCAA Tournamentappearances. The 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of theYear and three-time Big 5 Coach of the Year notched her 100thcareer win in 2013 at St. Bonaventure (1/13/13).

Prior to taking the reigns at TU from former college teammateDawn Staley, Cardoza spent 14 seasons as an assistant coachat Connecticut with Geno Auriemma. During her tenure, theHuskies captured five national championships.

SCOUTING TEMPLEComing off a 20-win season that saw Temple advance to theWNIT Final, the 2015-16 Owls return four players who aver-aged in double-figures in scoring last season, including re-turning All-Conference and All-Big 5 selections in senior EricaCovile and sophomore Alliya Butts. Covile led the Owls with8.3 rebounds per game last season, but was also a scoringthreat, averaging 11.4 points per outing, behind only Butts.Butts led the Owls in points per game (12.3) and steals (72)last year, collecting a number of individual accolades, includ-ing Big 5 Rookie of the Year.

Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald and sophomore Tanaya Atkinsonround out Temple's excellent squad of returning guards.Fitzgerald, who led the team in scoring as a rookie, averaged11.1 points per game, while Atkinson contributed 10.6 points and 6.8 boards per outing. They are joinedby talented newcomers in transfer Donnaizha Fountain and freshman Deja Reynolds, who will bothhelp fill the void of the graduated Tyonna Williams.

Temple, which played with the smallest roster in the conference last season, sees its number balloonwith four transfers and two freshmen eligible to suit up from the start of the season. The added num-bers, including some more size in the post, have given the Owls a more competitive practice environ-ment. At forward, Temple will feature three players who will see action for the first time, welcomingtransfers Monasia Bolduc and Ruth Sherrill, along with freshman Chyanna Canada.

At center, Temple returns a pair of 6-4 juniors in Safiya Martin and Taylor Robinson, an All-Freshmanselection in 2012-13. Graduate transfer Ugo Nwaigwe will also add depth in the paint.

In two games, Fitzgerald leads the Owls in scoring, accounting for 25.5 points per game, while Buttshas averaged 20.5 an outing. Atkinson (15.0 ppg) and Covile (10.5 ppg) have also averaged in double-figures in scoring, while Martin (8.0 rpg) and Fountain (7.0 rpg) are the top Owl rebounders. As a team,Temple is shooting just under 50% on the season, while averaging 87 points per contest.

LAST TIME OUT: TEMPLEA late fourth-quarter surge wasn't enough, as Temple dropped a low-scoring affair, 61-51, on the roadat Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald and sophomore Alliya Butts accounted forall but six of the Owls' points. Fitzgerald scored 27 points, adding nine rebounds, and dishing out threeassists, while Butts finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Senior Erica Covile and junior DonnaizhaFountain combined for 11 rebounds in the loss.

Temple shot a season-low by far, as Rutgers defense allowed the Owls just 25.4% from the field. TheScarlet Knights' lead ballooned to as many as 16 points, before Temple rallied to get to within four latein the fourth quarter. Rutgers came up with big shots when they needed, however, squashing Temple'scomeback attempt.

ACCURACY IS THE KEYLast season, Temple’s shooting accuracy was the key to victory. The Owls stood a perfect 15-0when out-shooting their opponents. Out-shooting teams was a tall order for last season’s Owls, who relied on a line-up featuring four guards. For the season, the 2014-15 squad shot 36.7% fromthe field and 33.0% from beyond-the-arc, while opponents shot 40.1% from the field and 33.1%from three.

NOVEMBER NOT SO NICELast year’s team struggled in November, recording its lowest month record of the season. The Owlswent 3-3 in November of 2014. Temple’s best month came when it mattered most, however, as theCherry and White were 5-1 in the month of March, which included four-straight wins in the WNIT.

APRIL SHOWERSThe Owls finished last season on April 1, 2015, the latest a Temple women’s basketball team hasever played. Though the April affair saw the Owls fall to West Virginia in the WNIT Semifinals, thegame marked the first ever post-season final four for a Temple women’s team.

WINS #17, 18, 19, and 20!With a record of just 16-15 at the end of the American Athletic Conference Tournament, a 20-winseason seemed unlikely for last year’s Temple team. However, a berth into the WNIT gave the Owlsnew life, where they rattled off four-straight victories. The post-season run gave the team a 20-win season, making it five out seven years in which Cardoza’s Owls reached the miletone. Overall,Temple’s program now has 14 20-win seasons.

VENEY PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACHAfter serving as an assistant women's basketball coach for seven seasons at Temple, Way Veneyhas been promoted to Associate Head Coach, announced by head coach Tonya Cardoza in August.

"Way has earned this promotion and honestly, it's long overdue," noted Cardoza. "When I hiredher seven years ago to be my top assistant, I knew she would work diligently to help propel ourprogram. During her tenure she has served as the Recruiting Coordinator and is responsible forbringing talented players like Erica [Covile], Feyonda [Fitzgerald] and Alliya [Butts], to name a few.She works primarily with the guards and strives to make them the very best each year. Her passionfor our program is evident in everything she has done to help us be successful."

WILLIAMS JOINS STAFFTyonna Williams, who graduated from Temple in June, joined the Owls staff this semester as a grad-uate assistant. Williams will serve as a Graduate Manager.

A four-year player for Temple, last year Williams averaged 13.2 points and 4.2 assists per game, while connecting on 82% (22-26) of her free throw attempts. Williams finished her time at Templeas the program record holder for three pointers and free throw percentage, making 171 threes andconnecting on 81.6% (230-282) from the line. The free throw percentage record stood for 27 years, with Williams breaking the previous mark of 81.4% set by Addie Jackson '88. Williams also finished17th on Temple's career scoring list with 1,075 points, and fourth on the all-time assists list with397.

BUTTS EARNS U-19 NATIONAL TEAM TRY-OUTAfter a stellar freshman season, Alliya Butts accepted an invitation to join 34 of the nation's bestat the 2015 USA Basketball Women's U19 World Championship Team Trials. The try-out was heldMay 14-17 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The invita-tions were issued by the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee. Though Buttsdid not make the national squad, it was a valuable experience for the rising sophomore.

Tonya Cardoza is in her eighth season on North BroadStreet, continuing and building upon the success of Templewomen’s basketball.

The 2014-15 Owls showed that they are ready to makea return to the national stage. Cardoza's squad made thefirst post-season final four in program history, advancingto the WNIT semifinals before falling in overtime at WestVirginia. The Owls finished with a 20-win season, going 20-17 overall, including a 12-6 mark in the tough American Ath-letic Conference. The 2014-15 season saw the breakout offreshman Alliya Butts, who was named Big 5 Freshman ofthe Year, while also earning spots on the American All-Con-ference team, the American All-Rookie team, and the All-Big 5 team. Junior combo guard Erica Covile also receivedAll-Big 5 and All-American Athletic Conference honors, while senior Tyonna Williams earned the American Sports-manship Award, as well as one of six spots on the All-WNITteam.

2013-14 marked a new era of women’s basketball atTemple for Cardoza— competing in the inaugural season ofthe American Athletic Conference. Guided by true freshmanpoint guard Feyonda Fitzgerald, the Owls faced seven na-tionally ranked opponents— tying the school record for themost in season— including two games against defendingnational champion and No. 1 Connecticut and Final Fourparticipant Louisville. The young Owls finished fifth inAmerican play after predicted to finish ninth, showing theleague and the nation that they had fight.

Fitzgerald was a unanimous All-Freshman Team hon-oree from the conference as well as a second-team All-Con-ference selection. Junior Rateska Brown earned theAmerican’s inaugural Sixth Player of the Year Award. SeniorNatasha Thames was a second-team All-Conference hon-oree, and freshman Taylor Robinson was named to the All-Freshman team.

The 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Cardoza ledthe Owls to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appear-ances, advancing to the Second Round in both 2010 and2011. The Owls narrowly missed earning a berth in theNCAA Tournament in 2011-12, but took a top spot in theWomen’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and ad-vanced to the third round.

Along with earning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year hon-ors for the Owls' performance in 2010-11, Cardoza was hon-ored as the Big 5 Coach of the Year for a third time. Sheearned that honor in each of her first three seasons at Tem-ple, and the Owls earned their sixth straight Big 5 title inher first year with the program. Temple won the Big 5 againin 2011, and finished as runner-up in both 2010 and 2012.

Already 107-57 all-time in her head coaching career,Cardoza led Temple to at least 20 wins in her first four yearsat the helm. During her inaugural season in 2008-09, Car-doza guided TU to a 21-10 mark and an NCAA?Tournamentappearance. She was a finalist for the National RookieCoach of the Year award. The Owls reached 25 wins in2009-10 which tied for the second-most in the history ofthe program. In 2010-11, the Owls finished 24-9 which in-cluded a 15-game win streak and a 13-1 record in the At-lantic 10. The 2011-12 season saw Temple go 23-10 and win

14 in a row, once again with a 13-1 mark in the conference.During their final year of Atlantic 10 Conference play in2012-13, Cardoza guided the nation’s second-youngestteam (six freshmen).

After spending 14 years as assistant coach at the Uni-versity of Connecticut under Hall of Fame coach Geno Au-riemma, a tenure in which she helped the Huskies to fiveNational Championships, few doubted that Cardoza hadwhat it takes to build a successful program.

The Owls finished in the Top 3 in the Atlantic 10 forthree consecutive seasons. In Cardoza’s first season shecoached the squad to an upset over No. 13 Xavier, makingher the first coach in TU women’s basketball history toupset a ranked team during her rookie season.

Cardoza was instrumental in All-Conference selectionLaKeisha Eaddy’s transition to point guard in 2008-09,nearly helping the upperclassman set a new single seasonrecord for assists. Cardoza also retained then-freshman re-cruit Kristen McCarthy, who was named to the A-10 FirstTeam in 2010, as well as taking home the title of Big 5Player of the Year.

Cardoza's best recruit had to sit out a year after trans-ferring from Division I Wright State in 2009, but Shey Peddythen became one of the top players in the history of theprogram. Peddy took home both the Atlantic 10 Player ofthe Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2012,and was named the Big 5 Player of the Year for a secondstraight time. Peddy was a two-time Atlantic 10 First Teamselection and made her mark on the all-time career recordlists despite playing only two years with the Owls. Peddybecame Cardoza’s first WNBA draft pick (as a head coach)when she was taken 23rd overall in the 2012 WNBA Draftby the Chicago Sky.

Arriving at Connecticut at the start of the 1994-95season, Cardoza helped guide the Huskies to an unprece-dented 465-41 record, seven Final Four appearances andsix No. 1 National Rankings in the final Associated Presspoll. Cardoza was a part of four undefeated regular sea-sons, including two unbeaten national championshipteams in 1994-95 and 2001-02. The Huskies also won aNCAA record 70 consecutive games from 2001 to 2003. InBig East play, the team won 12 regular-season titles and 12conference tournament championships.

Cardoza worked primarily with the guards at UConn, producing numerous All-America and All-BIG EAST perform-ers, including WNBA stars Sue Bird, Renee Montgomery, and Diana Taurasi.

A 1991 University of Virginia graduate with a degreein anthropology, Cardoza starred for the Cavaliers, leadingthe team to four consecutive NCAA National Tournamentappearances. As a senior, she led Virginia in scoring (15.5ppg), and tied Dawn Staley for the rebounding lead (6.1rpg) while earning the following honors: Kodak HonorableMention All-America; Kodak First Team All-District III; FirstTeam All-Atlantic Coast Conference; NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team, and NCAA Regional All-TournamentTeam. She was also a First Team All-ACC pick in 1988-89.

school's career blocked shots list (110), eighth in points(1,622) and 10th in rebounds (667).

In 2002, Cardoza was named to the ACC 50th Anniver-sary Women’s Basketball Team along with seven other for-mer Cavaliers including Staley.

Returning just five players from the 2013-14 season and fac-ing their second year in the competitive American AthleticConference, no one could have predicted the Temple women'sbasketball team's success this season, except maybe theOwls' themselves. The 2014-15 team had just one senior on their short roster.Luckily, Tyonna Williams was that one senior. "She's someone that plays with so much passion, but sheis so supportive," said Head Coach Tonya Cardoza. "She's likea coach on the floor. She's someone that if I had to build aprogram, I would want to start with her because she exempli-fies what you want in a player, in a leader." Under Cardoza and Williams' leadership, Temple finishedthe 2014-15 season with a 20-17 record and a trip to the WNITSemifinals. The Owls hit the 20-win mark under Cardoza forthe first time since the 2012 season. The WNIT success alsomarked the first post-season final four in program history. 20 wins and a trip to a post-season final four… these mile-stones seemed unlikely at the start of the season. Temple car-ried a roster of just nine, which included six underclassmen.Even more unlikely for the Owls, the starting line-up for thebulk of the season featured a pair of freshmen. The emergence of rookie Alliya Butts followed the Owls'script of talented freshmen guards, as her breakout seasoncame a year after then rookie Feyonda Fitzgerald led Templein scoring. Butts was joined in the starting line-up by class-mate Tanaya Atkinson, who was a starter for all 37 games ofher rookie campaign. Butts jumped into her starting role at the onset of the con-ference season, ironically taking that job from Fitzgerald. Butboth flourished in their new roles, as Butts ended as theteam's top scorer, while Fitzgerald ranked third in scoring offthe bench, recording her second-straight season with a dou-ble-digit scoring average. Butts finished with 446 points during her rookie cam-paign, ranking her fourth all-time in freshman scoring forTemple. She also led the Owls in steals and ranked third inassists, en route to a number of individual accolades, includ-ing Big 5 Rookie of the Year, American Athletic Conference All-Conference and All-Freshman Honors, and All-Big 5 honors. Atkinson, meanwhile, was counted on to score and re-bound for Temple, recording six double-doubles on the sea-son. Her final numbers stood at 10.6 points and 6.8 reboundsper contest. "To get that sort of production from a pair of freshmen isgreat," noted Cardoza. "We needed both guys to step up forus, and they did that."Another rookie, Khadijah Berger, also came up big for theOwls, leading Temple in three-point shooting percentage. She racked up 30 makes from beyond the arc, connecting on36.6% of her attempts. However, even with the underclass production, Cardozasaid that without Williams, the Owls would have been a differ-ent team. "She had a bunch of young guys and she could have beenfrustrated, but that was never the case," Cardoza said. "Theyfollowed her lead." The 2014-15 season also saw the emergence of anotherstar for Temple -- junior Erica Covile. The combo guard had herbest season yet in cherry and white, ranking second in theconference in rebounding (8.3 rpg), while also averaging 11.4points per contest. Covile racked up a team-best nine double-doubles, lead-ing the Owls in scoring in 12 games. She had 21 contests indouble-figures in scoring, also pulling down double-digit re-bound totals in 14 games. Covile earned the program's firstever American Athletic Conference Player of the Week award, and closed the season with All-Conference and All-Big 5 hon-ors. With strong guard play from Fitzgerald, Covile, and thefreshman class of Atkinson, Berger, and Butts, the Owls alsohad some bright spots down low during the season. Sopho-more center Safiya Martin emerged as a top-rebounder andshot blocker, battling through a mid-season injury to finishwith 5.4 boards per game and a team-best 50 blocks. Forward

Mama Traore, a junior transfer, saw action in all but one gamefor Temple, making seven starts, while sophomore center Tay-lor Robinson was also counted on during the season. As a team, the Owls started strong with a season-openingwin over Big 5-rival, La Salle. Fitzgerald showed no indicationof a sophomore slump, dropping a career-best 29 points. Thatseason opening luck ran out shortly, however, as Temple fellon the road in another Big 5 game, with Saint Joseph's top-ping the Owls, 78-74 in overtime. Temple then hit the road for the Hall of Fame Challenge, but three games in three days proved to be tough for theyoung Owls. A resounding win over Georgetown highlightedthe trip to Lawrenceville, Kan., but Temple fell to the hostschool, as well as Alabama, on the trip. The final game of the tournament was played at a familiarsite – Mohegan Sun Arena, the home of the American AthleticConference Championships. The Owls rebounded in that finaltournament game, topping Harvard, 81-69, with Atkinsonbeing named MVP. After five-straight road games, the Owls were sluggish intheir return to North Broad Street, dropping home games tonationally-ranked Florida State and Rutgers, as well asDelaware and Fordham. A win over Howard on the road gaveTemple new life, but back in Philadelphia, a furious comebackfell just short at Villanova, wrapping up the fall semester forthe team. When the Owls returned for winter break, so did their win-ning ways. Temple rattled off three-straight victories, toppingMemphis, Cincinnati, and SMU, to open conference play, 3-0. However, a 52-50 Big-5 setback at Penn followed, and Tem-ple then dropped a pair of contests to the top-two teams inthe American, UConn and USF. With their American Athletic Conference mark just above.500, the Owls picked up conference wins in four out of theirnext five games, moving to 7-3. A tough road trip then sawTemple fall at Tulane and Tulsa, setting their overall record to11-14 and their conference mark to 7-5. Needing to get back to .500 to qualify for a post-seasonbid, the Owls closed the regular season by winning five outof their final six games. The run was highlighted by a 79-69senior day victory over ECU at McGonigle Hall. Though the Owls fell to ECU in the quarterfinals of theAmerican Athletic Conference tournament, their final regular-season push ensured they had done enough to qualify for thepost-season. Receiving their first WNIT bid since the 2011-12 season, the Owls showed they are ready for the national stage. Theteam opened the tournament with a 67-54 win on the road atMarist, and then posted a 61-56 win at Penn in the secondround. Temple was then able to host a third-round game, welcom-ing NC State to McGonigle Hall. After falling behind at thehalf, the Owls tied it up at the end of regulation, beforeFitzgerald hit the game-winner with under a second remainingin overtime, sending the team into the quarterfinals. With a bid to the final four on the line, Temple defeated atough Middle Tennessee State team. The Owls used a strongfirst half and a solid finish to hold on for a 69-57 victory onthe road. Though the team's storybook season came to an end withan overtime loss at West Virginia in the semifinals, the Owlsshowed that their future is bright. Unlike this season, next year's Temple team will featureeight returners with solid experience, also adding transfersand new recruits. The Owls lose only Williams, an All-WNITselection, to graduation. Williams ended her career at Temple as the programrecord holder for three pointers and free throw percentage, making 171 threes and connecting on 81.6% (230-282) fromthe line. She also finished fourth all-time with 397 assists. Beyond the statistics, Williams left her Owls with a legacythat was more than just points and assists. Her leadershipwill live on, though, instilled in each of the eight returnersshe brought under her wing, leaving Cardoza's 2015-16 squadpoised for success.
