Here I sit on February 13th during a snowstorm, trying to think about the Springholidays of Purim and Passover! It’s noteasy for sure but with so many great thingsin the works, I can’t wait till the storm isover, the snow melts and we celebrate somany wonderful holidays and fun activitiestogether this Spring.

I have been lucky enough to partici-pate in a program developed by the Jewish Outreach Institute.Having already taken two webinars with two more to go, I amexcited about bringing this information to our Temple community and then to the broader community in hopes toacquaint more potential members with what Temple Am Echadcan offer them. The premise of the program is simple. We goto public spaces where we know there are potential membersand through various free activities, they see what we’re aboutand hopefully will want to learn more. It’s hard to explain inwriting but think of it as “a free sample of Judaism throughtaste and touch.” The first program I would like to have us participate in is“Passover in the Matzoh Aisle.” We set up a table with perhapsdifferent types of charoses and let people taste them - itbecomes a talking point. Sounds so simple and yet we haven’tdone it. I have all the details we need to get this started butwhat I really need is some volunteers to work with me, bothwith the planning and execution. I need your help to make thisa success. At the same time, we will be able to let people knowabout our Community Seder and our Peter, Paul and MaryShabbat. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, to be able to let a wideraudience know what they have right in their neighborhood? Please email me at [email protected] or call meand let me know you are on board! I promise we’ll have fun aswe grow together!

President’s Message Temple FinanceEvery now and then it is important for

each of us to remember that being a Jew anda member of Am Echad is all about partici-pation. The bulletin is filled with programsand events that will educate, stimulate andprovide fun. It is our hope that you will par-ticipate. Join us at our second Annual IsraeliFilm series. Bring a friend or neighbor toour first Pride Shabbat. If you are looking

for a place to go on the second night of Passover, join yourfellow congregants at our Community Seder. If you arelooking for a fun night out, come to Monte Carlo Night. And if you have a special talent, be a part of our first “AmEchad Has Talent” night. There are many options whether you are young or old, single or a family. The calendar is full. If you are looking for a little more, there is no betterway to make your Am Echad membership special than volunteering to be on a committee or chair an event. Tohelp you, we will be starting a new column in the bulletinnext month that will list ways for you to get involved. Fornow, I’ll focus on a just few things. There is nothing that has been more rewarding to methan being a teacher in our religious school. We are alwayslooking for people who want to share their knowledge, who can teach a mini course or want to be a substitute. Weare also looking for a seventh grade teacher. If you areinterested, please reach out to Melanie Schoenberger atamechadschool@gmail. This year, we will be running an event to bring a tasteof Judaism to the community. It will involve sharing yourfavorite charoset recipes with neighbors at an area super-market and letting people know a little more about AmEchad. If you would like to help coordinate or be a greeter, please let Irene Drantch know. We have two exciting fundraisers planned for thespring. I already mentioned Monte Carlo Night. We willalso be holding our first Golf and Tennis Outing. Wealready have chairs for those and active committees butcan always use an extra set of hands. You can reach out toLisa Birch or call the office and we will connect you to theright people. The last thing I will highlight is our thinking for thesummer. Am Echad does not close just because schoolcloses. We are looking to have a service at the beach or ata park in addition to our traditional lay-led services. Otherideas include a Saturday kayak trip followed by Havdallah. If you have your own ideas or want to help to plan, pleaseget in touch with Donna Levy. Of course, you can always get in touch with me. Helpmake our congregation an even bigger part of your life.

It’s thrilling each and every year. No,I’m not talking about the Super Bowl(which was extremely disappointing thistime around), but Gospel Shabbat.

On January 24, we experienced againthe joy of hearing cutting edge gospelmusic sung by the wonderful “Voices ofVictory” from St. John’s University conducted by the dedicated and extraor-

dinary Nigel Gretton. Besides the rousing music, the spirit of the evening asembodied by the attitude of these young people was quitetouching. As I’ve said in the past, they are like a throwbackto the past in the most positive sense. These “kids,” all college students at St. John’s, believe in God and clearlyhave a deep attachment to the music and the values itespouses. They are some of the most courteous, friendlyand enthusiastic young people I have encountered in manyyears. To say that they are refreshing is to greatly under-state the case. The great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson sang afamous gospel tune entitled “I’m Gonna Live The Life ISing About In My Song.” The Voices of Victory and theirdirector Nigel Gretton seem to embody that song andimpress me anew (and I’m sure, all of you) each time weall worship together. And that’s exactly what we did on thatFriday evening in January. This was worship as it shouldbe, with choirs singing, the congregation joining in enthu-siastically, and reverence for God mixed in with remem-brance for Dr. Martin Luther King, reference to the Reformcommitment to social justice, and a bit of humor. Along with thanking Nigel Gretton and the Voices ofVictory, I must thank our own Volunteer Choir. As always, they did a great job. Thanks to Rabbi Glenn Jacob withwhom it is truly a pleasure to work. He seems to knowexactly what to do at these special services. Thanks, ofcourse, to Maestro David Close who is always excellentand ready to adapt. And thanks to the Temple administra-tion and to all of you for continuing to support and partic-ipate in our Music Shabbat services. I know that I look for-ward to each and every one, and I hope you do too. See youat Jazz Shabbat on March 14! With affection,

Cantor’s CornerI have Passover on my mind. It’s a

big deal in our family, as I’m sure it isin yours. When I taught first grade inour religious school, on the first day Iwould always ask the kids, “What isyour first Jewish memory?” Mine isPassover.

As a child we had huge “familycircle” seders and rented out a ballroom

in a local hotel so we could all fit. Finding the afikomenwas like a contact sport. There was singing, dancing withtimbrels and children hopping around like frogs. Now our seders are a bit smaller, though not by much. All are welcome and we always have several non-Jewsthere. Everyone is required to participate in the seder bydoing a reading. Their part is on their plate when theycome in, like a place card. The past few years, on the second night of Passover,we have come to Temple Am Echad for the CommunitySeder. I have to admit, at first I wasn’t thrilled with the ideaof breaking with tradition and coming to Temple. I waswrong. What a wonderful experience! To sit in a room withover one hundred people sharing a Passover tradition is ajoy. Singing songs, dancing with timbrels and childrenhopping around like frogs. It reminds me of my childhood. This is how Passover should be. This year my family will again be attending TempleAm Echad’s Community Seder. I look forward to seeing allof you there, singing songs, dancing with timbrels andhopping around the ballroom like frogs.

I can’t believe that I am halfwaydone with my first term asONESY’s president. So far, theexperience has been incredible. Wewent from only 2 members to over15 in under a year and we’re stillgrowing. Some successful eventsthat we have had was Halloween

for the Hungry where we collected over 150 lbs. of foodfor the local food bank, and a Chanukah event for theSunday School. We have been eagerly planning for thesenext few months to be packed with more fun-filled eventslike these. Many ONESY members attended some NFTYregional events this year. I recently went to Winter Kallahand my experience was nothing short of awesome. WinterKallah has taught me some important lessons aboutworking to make ONESY a more inclusive community andabout my Jewish identity as a whole. April 4-6 is NFTYNAR’s Spring Kallah and I encourage all teens in 8th -12th

grade to attend. Not only will you be immersed in such anaccepting community but you will also have theopportunity to make friendships that can last a lifetime. Please, become involved! I truly would like to see ONESYexpand and see more people attend NFTY events. You canget involved by participating in some of our upcomingevents. The ONESY Board and I have been working hard toend this year on a high note with some great events.Starting this month, we are hosting our first “Penny Wars”to help fund youth activities and scholarships for Templeteens for trips such as the NFTY-NAR Spring Kallah.Penny Wars is a competition between grades in Sundayand Religious Schools. Points are scored by collectingcoins (pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters). Each coin’svalue counts as that many points for each grade. So apenny equals 1 point, a quarter equals 25. Here’s the catch! You can drop in bills to subtract points from an opposinggrade. $1 takes away 100 points, $5 500 points, and so on.Whichever grade has the most points at the end of PennyWars wins a special party! Please bring in your sparechange to help fund youth group activities. Another exciting event to look forward to is on March16 when ONESY is putting together Temple Am Echad’sannual Purim Carnival. We have many new and excitinggames planned for this special day. Remember to dress upin your favorite costume because there will be a costumecontest as well. Lastly, ONESY and JONESY will be

Ross Ian Gilman will be celebrat-ing becoming a Bar Mitzvah onSaturday, March 22. His parents, Noreen& Stuart Gilman, and his brother,Brendan, are just so proud of him. Ross is in the seventh grade atWoodmere Middle School and is a happy-go-lucky kidwho loves to laugh. He is an honor student and his favoritesubject is math. Caring CommunityHighlight on: Cooking And Baking

For Our Congregants

Our volunteers that help us cook are a very diversegroup of congregants. Some know each other from Fridaynight services, some from other committees and some arejust involved with our cooking group. We are foreverthankful for their enthusiasum, time and love they all putinto cooking these meals for us. Our seventh graders bake the cookies that are deliv-ered with the food to our congregants. These students pre-pare the batter by following the recipes (using the mathskills learned at school), scoop the cookies onto largecookie sheets and then wash and clean up all the equipmentthey used while the cookies bake. It is impressive to seethem work together to make sure the cookies look goodand taste delicious for our congregants. For Purim, students are also making hamantaschenfor the Shalach Manot bags that are delivered by CaringCommunity volunteers to congregants who are over 90,homebound or ill. Some of the younger students will bemaking cards to add to the bags. Miriam Fine, a past recip-ient, stated, “Receiving a Purim basket was a wonderfulsurprise. This was the first one I ever received. I used tohelp put them together at the Temple. Being a recipientgave me a wonderful feeling.” Purim is a fun holiday in which we are commanded toeat, drink and be merry but it is also an occasion to givematanot l’evyonim (gifts for the poor). Families can cele-brate Purim by making sandwiches for the homeless, donating food or money to a food pantry or soup kitchen,or giving a gift basket of food to someone in need. We are always looking for new recipes to incorporateinto our menus. If you have an easy, delicious recipe thatfreezes well, please let us know.

For the past few months, we haveexperienced the true elements of win-ter with freezing temperatures andenough snow to last us a lifetime.Through this weather, it is importantto thank all of the parents of HebrewSchool and Religious School studentswho have trekked out in the frigid airto bring their children on Tuesdays

and Sundays to our school. We also have an incredible staffthat made sure to be present each session, no matter howdeep the snow! March will be a very busy month for the students inthe Hebrew and Religious School. Friday, March 7, is ourFamily Shabbat that will be led by students in gradesKindergarten, First, Second and Third. Be sure to join usfor a Shabbat Pot Luck dinner at 6:30 PM (meat) that willbe followed by services at 7:30 PM. Call the Temple Officeto RSVP or complete the form on page 8 of the bulletin. OnSunday, March 16, students will be participating in aPurim celebration. Leading up to this, many of our stu-dents will be helping to bake hamantaschen and will createShaloch Manot to send to those needing a touch of happi-ness. On March 30, students in grades K-7 will be partici-pating in a model Seder to prepare for Passover. By partic-ipating in a model seder each year, students are remindedof how to celebrate Passover in their own homes. In addition to these celebrations, we are looking forstudents to become Temple Am Echad Hebrew andReligious School reporters. Students can choose to writeabout a project they worked on in class or topics that werestudied in the classroom. We also encourage students towrite about a favorite Jewish food, family memory, or holiday celebration that they would like to share with the congregation. Students should submit this to [email protected]. You can document thisthrough text or photographs accompanied by captions. Allwriting will be submitted for online publication in theTemple Am Echad Blog. This is a very exciting opportunity for our students. Please be sure to participatein this new project! March is surely the time to celebrate the performingand visual arts with us! If you sing, dance, play an instru-ment or have an unusual talent, be sure not to miss this!Temple Am Echad will be holding auditions for Hebrewand Religious School Students of all ages to win a slot inthe talent show, Temple Am Echad’s Got Talent! Solo, duetand group acts are welcome. Auditions follow schoolclasses on March 9. Call the office or email [email protected] with any questions or toschedule your audition.

Please keep an eye open for our upcomingScholarship Art Competition. Students of all ages in theTemple Am Echad Hebrew and the Religious School willbe invited to enter this competition. Be sure to look formore details! A special thank you to all of our outstanding teen stu-dents acting as madrichim in our school. These studentshave been performing true mitzvot by helping the youngerchildren in our school each Sunday morning. The enthusi-asm, patience and time that these teens devote are trulyhelping to create a beautiful community in our school. Welook forward to having these students continue to be lead-ers and role models in the future.

Early Childhood Happenings On a very cold winter day in February, many ofour families participated in a Temple event known as“Shluffy Time.” Under the direction of Barbara Sternand her extraordinary volunteers, the children madepillows which they snuggled on while listening toRabbi Glenn tell a story. This was followed by a “bedtime” snack, which the children helped create. Surelya great time was had by all! As you may have noticed, weath-er wise, February this year was apretty rotten month. Snow, ice, lowtemperatures, then more snow, slushand ice. There were, however, twoevents at the Temple in February thatwere sparsely attended due to the coldand dangerous icy conditions that Iwould like to tell you about. The firstwas our monthly Men’s Club dinner

meeting. It was not a flashy meeting. The speaker wasAndy Sparberg, one of our Men’s Club officers, and wehad the dinner at the Temple ballroom with the usual castof characters. It started on a shaky note. The four freshwine bottles were missing from the Men’s Club secretliquor closet! They were either stolen by the Temple winethief or we had used them for some earlier Temple affairand forgot. Not to worry. One of our members had broughta variety of boutique craft beers for the meet and greet, sono one missed the wine. Then the food was served. Weused a new caterer, Saucy Noodle Caterers (Peter Augello)and the food was quite good. Thanks to Perry Mallor whoarranged for it. Then Andy gave his talk and it was fasci-nating. Highway history may not sound exciting but withRobert Moses and other politicos involved, it gets dramat-ic. Plus many of us are old enough to remember when thestuff was built and the battles fought. Remember the WestSide Highway controversy? So we had good drink, goodfood and a great talk on a cold, nasty February evening. Then came the Friday night service on February 14.With the Rabbi and Cantor wandering the wilds ofMorocco, it was up to Temple members to take over. Itturned out to be a jewel of a service. Bruce Kerner was thereader and he kept the service going at a comfortable, relaxed pace. The Yuni family, David and his daughterJillian, played the cantorial soloist roles. Sometimes Jillianwas on her own, sometimes she and David did duets, andsometimes David took the lead. Jillian did great in her first“public” performance and David added some creativemusic when appropriate. The Kiddush was done expertlyby Perry Mallor and Joe Surace. Then Rita Kerner did theD’var Torah in a clear concise manner - she knew her stuff. All and all, it was just a wonderfully simple service. Justtwo run-of-the-mill events but for those of us there, theyturned out to be very special indeed. Such are the rewardsof Temple life for those who show up. Instead of our monthly dinner meeting, the Men’sClub is going to an Islanders Hockey Game on Tuesday,March 18. The Islanders are playing the Minnesota Wild. The game is at 7 PM and the tickets are $25 each. This isnot just a Men’s Club event, everyone is invited! It’s greatfor the whole family! We would especially like to have

10

Men’s Club Moments members of the Youth Group join us. So if you know any-one who likes hockey, bring them to the game! For ticketsor information, email Perry Mallor at [email protected] call him at 516-302-7907. Reservations for tickets areaccepted until March 10. Finally, remember we have bowling every month (onthe 8th this month). Contact Rob Himmelstein for informa-tion. Sisterhood Getaway ~ March 7-9, 2014

As I sit in my house being incred-ibly thankful for being there, I realizethat we all have something to begrateful for. As usual, Sisterhood iskeeping busy and focused on theupcoming events that will enable usto keep giving, helping and includ-ing! March 1st will be our first annualpot roast cook off. Make certain you

are there for the “crowning” of the title! This is a Getaway year and that is always an excitingevent. The combination of Jean Marion, Rachel Tiran andLaurie Lucks plus their hardworking committee means anexperience to remember. We will reconnect, relax, reflectand renew our commitment to Sisterhood and our personalgrowth. Join us the weekend of March 7th and treat your-self to an experience you will long remember. ContactRachel Tiran at 458-5006. The Women’s Seder has become such a unifyingevent for Jewish women in the area. Please let LaneyHonig (481-7150) know that you will attend and bring atable of friends! We are the strongest when we are togetherand thanks to Arliene Reich and Carolyn Stein and theircommittee representing many different factions of Jewishwomen, this seder on March 24 at Hewlett-East RockawayJewish Center will be one to remember. So make yourreservation now! How far can spring be when we are selling our Lord& Taylor shopping passes? Please see Shari Cooper to getyours. Remember, each $5 pass brings us closer to havingour best turnout and achieving a new goal. Each month I have highlighted women whose verypresence “defines” sisterhood. As I browse the names onthe board, it is never a problem to pick someone to talkabout. It is always a sense of pride to us that so many ofour past presidents not only stay involved but also continueto lead and set an example, and do it with style! The twopast presidents we are honoring this month are BarbaraStern and Pat Glass. Barbara Stern is an involved and dedicated Sisterhoodwoman. Her involvement in the district and national levelof WRJ is well known but she is OURS! She served as ourcentennial representative and, in that role, coordinated andplanned our special events. But it is at home that sheshines! She is visible, welcoming and always on the lookout for new women to help, involve and welcome. She isour goodwill ambassador! Pat Glass continues to amaze. Need something done?Ask Pat! Not only will it get done but done with class anda smile. She is a fixture at Trash to Treasures, always givesthe best advice and is fair and caring. Just what aSisterhood leader should be! She helps, bakes and serves

Purim The version of the story of this particular holiday,Purim, is a whole book of the Bible, Megillot Esther. Its unique distinction from all the other books of theBible is that God’s name does not appear in it evenonce. Jews see in this strange fact the deeper meaningof the entire story of attempted genocide by the villainHaman, advisor to King Ahasuerus. Even when God isnot openly revealed, he can stand behind the scenes andperform miracles under the guise of what we might callamazing coincidence.(The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Jewish History and Culture)

At Purim this year, please join us as we again askThe Fifth Question: Why on this night are millions ofpeople still going hungry? Incorporate The Fifth Question into yourPassover Seder: After the youngest person reads thefour questions from the Haggadah, ask The FifthQuestion and reflect as a group upon the crisis ofhunger, why it persists and what you individually andcollectively could do to end it.
