If you missed the Quilt Retreat at Daysprings you missed a great time. Thank you to Penny Black and her committee for a well-planned and fun time. We made some fun projects and enjoyed each other’s company while sewing away. I am happy to announce that next years retreat coordinators will be Cathy Starman and Lynda Weingart. The retreat is scheduled to be held March 30 to April 2, 2017. Stay tuned for further details. I so enjoyed Brenda Grampsass presentation at our April meeting about labels and providing the provenance of each of our quilts. It made me resolve to put a label on every quilt I make. Our May party is always a fun time. Cathy Starman and her committee have a fun time planned for you. Dont forget to bring a dish to share, your party blocks, and money to buy chances for the flower pot walk. I am sorry I m going to miss it, but Ill be on safari in South Africa looking for the Big Five and, oh yes, fabric! Thank you to Cheryl Martin for our April Special Project the cool Snap Bag. Looking forward to seeing what you come up. Remember, we meet in the WEST Activity Center. Happy Quilting until we see each other! Brenda Grampsas’s (AQS certified appraiser) lecture on the importance of labeling your quilts at the April meeting was great. She gave great suggests (and a handout “Quilt Label Tips”) on how to label your quilts. She brought a trunk show of her quilt collection to share, showing the different ways to label your quilts. You can visit her website @ www.thimbletales.com. Just remember at quilt isn’t complete until the label is added! Our program this month is the May party. Our party girls, led by Cathy Starman, have a great evening planned for us. The table decorations are adorable and you will love the party favors. Everyone that attends will bring one home. The party will start at 6:30 pm. Don't forget whatever you signed up to bring for dinner. Also bring your completed party blocks. We will be drawing winners for the table runner kits and you won't want to miss the opportunity to win a set. As our annual fundraiser, we will be having a Flower Pot stroll. Bring a flower pot decorated and filled with goodies to put in the stroll. Buy tickets to put in the container for each pot and hope your name is drawn. Raid your piggy bank or bring your Mad Money to buy your tickets.

Traveling this summer?

If you are traveling this summer Karen Barrie suggested you check out this website www.quiltinghub.com . She said you can even get a trip planner for your route with all the quilt shops along the way. Thanks, Karen!

PQ’s 2016 Brown Bag Challenge Make sure you bring your brown bag to the May meeting (5/19/16) with your total amount of 2 yards of fabric if you are participating in this year’s Brown Bag Challenge. If must be in an unmarked brown bag. This year we will be making charity table runners for Habitat for Humanity. Information below is what you need to put in your Brown Bag:

Yardage: 2 yards of fabric – may be a combination of 8 coordinating fat quarters, or quarter yards – any combination totaling 2 yards of coordinating fabric.

Your unmarked brown bag will be collected at the beginning of the party and once the BB committee has checked in each bag, they will be redistributing one to each who participated. Your task is to make 2 table runners with the bag of fabric you received from the committee. One will be donated to Habitat for Humanity and one to be exchanged back to the brown bag participants. You may add additional fabrics to your 2 yards to complete the table runners. Both table runners must be completed (pieced, appliqué, quilted and labeled with your first name and date). Ideas: Include Holidays, Patriotic, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Birthdays, Modern or Traditional. If you have questions please contact either Karen Barrie (727-289-6534) or Eleanor Javid (727-593-0478).

2017 Quilt show Boutique

How many items have each of you made for the 2017 Quilt Show Boutique? Do you have quilts that no longer talk to you that you might want to sell? Other ideas are table runners, holiday items, pillow cases, sewing cases, mug rugs, coasters, thread catchers, coin purses, purses, scarves, baby bibs, place mats, wall hangings, red work, or other hand crafted items. Books and magazines can also be sold in the boutique. However, sewing equipment (rulers, notions, patterns) or supplies (fabric, thread, etc.) cannot be sold in the boutique. Have you got ideas for items that members can make for the boutique – please share. Please continue to collect scraps of fabric 3 inches by 3 inches or larger for appliqué scrap bags that our guild will sell in the boutique. At the 2015 quilt show, over 80 of these fabric bags made by Largo Crackers were sold in a couple of hours. Each bag contains the same color of fabric (reds, greens, blues, purples, etc.) that are used for appliqué projects. As you save this fabric, please organize it by color, it will make it easier to sort into bags later. Judy Barlett, Cheryl Martin, Pat Jones, and Elaine Rice have already volunteered to help with boutique. Thank you! Of course we need more volunteers. Anyone else is welcome to help. If you have any questions, please ask any of us. Teri Roberts 727 481-7286 [email protected]

Here’s an idea for the boutique. Go to http://patternrevolution.com/blog/2015/1/15/sraps-scraps-everywhere-and-not-a-scrap-to-spare for the instructions.

Large Bag:

A few of you at the PQ Quilt Retreat asked what pattern I used to make large bag that I made to carry my large cutting matt, square rulers, and the large acrylic sewing table. The booklet that contains the pattern is “Sew on the Go, Carry Your Sewing Essentials in Style” by Cindy Taylor Oates. See the pictures of the booklet and the bag that I made. If someone would like to borrow the booklet, just let me know. Teri Roberts

Loaded "Nacho" Chicken Tostada 7 Smart Points 299 calories

Total Time: 15 minutes

These easy loaded chicken "nacho" tostadas – topped with cheese, tomatoes, guacamole, olives and jalapenos are a great way to take nachos and turn them into a main dish.

Ingredients:

4 tostada shells

1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

½ cup reduced fat shredded Mexican blend cheese (I used Sargento)

1/2 cup mashed avocado (about 1 small)

1 medium lime, halved

Kosher salt

1 cup chopped tomato

¼ cup chopped white onion

2 tablespoons chopped cilantro

Freshly ground black pepper

7 ounces cooked boneless, skinless chicken breast, cubed*

1/3 cup canned drained black beans, rinsed

1 jalapeño, sliced thin

2 tbsp sliced black olives

Directions:

1. In a small bowl, combine the cheeses. 2. In another small bowl, combine avocado, juice from half the lime, and a pinch of salt. 3. In one more bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, cilantro, juice from the other lime half, ¼ teaspoon salt and black pepper, to

taste. 4. To assemble: Layer each with 1/3 cup chicken, 1 tbsp black beans, and sprinkle with 2 1/2 tbsp cheese. Broil for 2-3 minutes

or until the cheese is melted. Top each with a dollop of avocado and a spoonful of the tomato salsa, jalapeno black olives. Top each with a small sprinkle of salt.

*I seasoned 1 8 oz breast with 1/8 teaspoon salt and pepper and threw it on the grill pan for 8 to 10 minutes on each side over medium heat.
